Abstract

Nowadays, the success of spinal cord stimulation (SCS) is evaluated separately in patients who have previous experiences with standard SCS and in SCS-naïve patients. Nevertheless, it is yet to be evaluated whether both patient groups are effectively distinct patient groups. Therefore, the aims of this study are twofold: 1) Are there clusters in the data to distinguish between both patient groups? 2) Can we discriminate both patient groups based on routinely collected clinical parameters?

Abstract

In the last decade, the risk benefits ratio of MHT has been evaluated mainly in terms of cardiovascular risk. Present Consensus Statement is largely inspired by the Global Consensus on Menopausal Hormone Therapy in 2013 and 2016 by leading global menopause societies (The American Society for Reproductive Medicine, The Asia Pacific Menopause Federation, The Endocrine Society, The European Menopause and Andropause Society, The International Menopause Society, The International Osteoporosis Foundation and The North American Menopause Society). The aim of these Recommendations is to provide a simple and updated reference on postmenopausal MHT. The term MHT typically includes estrogen replacement therapy (ERT) and estrogen-progestogen therapy (EPT). EPT can be sequential (Seq) when progestogen is added to ERT for 10-14 days a month, or continuous combined (CC) when progestogen is administered continuously every day along with a fixed amount of estrogen. MHT also includes Tibolone and the Tissue Selective Estrogen Complex (TSEC).

Abstract

International audience; For monolithic heterogeneous integration, fast yet low-power processing and storage, and high integration density, the objective of the EU GREAT project is to co-integrate multiple digital and analog functions together within CMOS by adapting the Magnetic Tunneling Junctions (MTJs) into a single baseline technology enabling logic, memory, and analog functions, particularly for Internet of Things (IoT) platforms. This will lead to a unique STT-MTJ cell technology called Multifunctional Standardized Stack (MSS). This paper presents the progress in the project from the technology, compact modeling, process design kit, standard cells, as well as memory and system level design evaluation and exploration. The proposed technology and toolsets are giant leaps towards heterogeneous integrated technology and architectures for IoT.

Abstract

International audience; This paper deals with a new MRAM technology whose writing scheme relies on the Spin Orbit Torque (SOT). Compared to Spin Transfer Torque (STT) MRAM, it offers a very fast switching, a quasi-infinite endurance and improves the reliability by solving the issue of “read disturb”, thanks to separate reading and writing paths. These properties allow introducing SOT at all-levels of the memory hierarchy of systems and adressing applications which could not be easily implemented by STT-MRAM. We present this emerging technology and a full design framework, allowing to design and simulate hybrid CMOS/SOT complex circuits at any level of abstraction, from device to system. The results obtained are very promising and show that this technology leads to a reduced power consumption of circuits without notable penalty in terms of performance.

33. Conscious Sedation Using Dexmedetomidine During Surgical Paddle Lead Placement Improves Outcome in Spinal Cord Stimulation: A Case Series of 25 Consecutive Patients

Abstract

Different anesthesia techniques are used for surgical implantation of paddle lead electrodes for neurostimulation through a laminectomy. We wanted to evaluate the use of dexmedetomidine as sedative for this procedure in a series of patients. Second, we wanted to verify whether the stimulation pattern and position of the electrode had to be changed during the procedure guided by the patient's feedback. Twenty‐five consecutive patients received surgical implantation of a spinal cord stimulation electrode under conscious sedation using dexmedetomidine and local anesthesia. We evaluated the effects of the administered drug, the patient comfort, and the adequacy of the stimulation pattern. Twenty‐four patients completed the procedure with only dexmedetomidine and local anesthetic. Infusion was started on average 55 minutes (sd 29) prior to incision. The mean dose of lidocaine was 430 mg (sd 95). There were no significant hemodynamic changes. Median time to reach Modified Aldrete's score postoperative was 67 minutes (sd 38). In 46% of the patients, the position of the electrode was changed guided by the feedback of the patient. More than half of the patients remember most details of the procedure. Only four patients mentioned substantial discomfort and only three would definitely not want to undergo this procedure again. Implantation of spinal cord stimulation electrodes through a surgical laminectomy using dexmedetomidine is a safe and feasible procedure with adequate comfort for patient and surgeon. This way of working increases the optimal position of the electrode resulting in the most convenient stimulation pattern and avoiding revisions.

International audience; To tackle the key issues of monolithic heterogeneous integration, fast yet low power processing, high integration density, fast yet low power storage, the goal of the GREAT project is to co-integrate multiple functions like sensors (“Sensing”), RF receivers (“Communicating”) and logic/memory (“Processing/Storing”) together within CMOS by adapting the STT-MTJs (Magnetic devices) to a single baseline technology enabling logic, memory, and analog functions in the same System-on-Chip (SoC) as the enabling technology platform for Internet of Things (IoT). This will lead to a unique STT-MTJ cell technology called Multifunctional Standardized Stack (MSS). The major outputs of GREAT are the technology and the architecture platform for IoT SoCs providing better integration of embedded & mobile communication systems and a significant decrease of their power consumption. Abstract

Hippocampal sclerosis (HS) is a common neuropathological finding and has been associated with advanced age, TDP-43 proteinopathy, and cerebrovascular pathology. We analyzed neuropathological data of an autopsy cohort of early-onset frontotemporal dementia patients. The study aimed to determine whether in this cohort HS was related to TDP-43 proteinopathy and whether additional factors could be identified. We examined the relationship between HS, proteinopathies in frontotemporal cortices and hippocampus, Alzheimer disease, cerebrovascular changes, and age. We confirmed a strong association between HS and hippocampal TDP-43, whereas there was a weaker association between HS and frontotemporal lobar degeneration with TDP-43 pathology (FTLD-TDP). Nearly all of the FTLD-TDP cases had TDP-43 pathology in the hippocampus. HS was present in all FTLD-TDP type D cases, in 50% of the FTLD-TDP A cohort and in 6% of the FTLD-TDP B cohort. Our data also showed a significant association between HS and vascular changes. We reviewed the literature on HS and discuss possible pathophysiological mechanisms between TDP-43 pathology, cerebrovascular disease, and HS. Additionally, we introduced a quantitative neuronal cell count in CA1 to objectify the semiquantitative visual appreciation of HS.

Las alteraciones del SOP en su mayoría son tratables y el diagnóstico temprano de las pacientes mejora su pronóstico reproductivo. Pese a su alta incidencia e importancia, los mecanismos fisiopatológicos del SOP aún son relativamente desconocidos. Recientemente se han publicado recomendaciones internacionales basadas en evidencia para su tratamiento.

Abstract

International audience; Lasers have become one of the most efficient means to attack secure integrated systems. Actual faults or errors induced in the system depend on many parameters, including the circuit technology and the laser characteristics. Understanding the physical effects is mandatory to correctly evaluate during the design flow the potential consequences of a laser-based attack and implement efficient counter-measures. This paper presents results obtained within the LIESSE project, aiming at defining a comprehensive approach for designers. Outcomes include the definition of fault/error models at several levels of abstraction, specific CAD tools using these models and new counter-measures well-suited to thwart laser-based attacks. Actual measures on components manufactured in the new 28 nm FDSOI technology are also presented.

International audience; Evaluating early at design time the level of security achieved with respect to fault-based hardware attacks requires understanding and accurately modeling the faults that can actually occur in a circuit under attack. Attacks with lasers can produce single or multiple-bit errors, while having a local impact in the circuit. This paper discusses several fault or error models that can be considered at design time and summarizes experimental results providing some insights into the consequences of the model chosen for evaluation.

Abstract

International audience; Soft errors with multiple erroneous bits have become a significant threat in embedded systems. New approaches must therefore be proposed to detect errors in a system without assumptions on the error multiplicity. Behavioral checking is in that case appealing. This paper presents a new extended and flexible control flow error detection approach, able to also cover errors in the critical variables of processor-based systems. The approach does not modify the initial system and is compatible with standards such as IEC 61508. Results on a Leon3-based system are presented.

Abstract

Dysregulated iron or Ca2+homeostasis has been reported in Parkinson’s disease (PD) models. Here, we discover a connection between these two metals at the mitochondria. Elevation of iron levels causes inward mitochondrial Ca2+overflow, through an interaction of Fe2+with mitochondrial calcium uniporter (MCU). In PD neurons, iron accumulation-triggered Ca2+influx across the mitochondrial surface leads to spatially confined Ca2+elevation at the outer mitochondrial membrane, which is subsequently sensed by Miro1, a Ca2+-binding protein. A Miro1 blood test distinguishes PD patients from controls and responds to drug treatment. Miro1-based drug screens in PD cells discover Food and Drug Administration-approved T-type Ca2+-channel blockers. Human genetic analysis reveals enrichment of rare variants in T-type Ca2+-channel subtypes associated with PD status. Our results identify a molecular mechanism in PD pathophysiology and drug targets and candidates coupled with a convenient stratification method.

Abstract

International audience; Determining the dependability of integrated systems with respect to soft errors is necessary for a growing number of applications. The most critical information must be identified to achieve good efficiency/cost trade-offs when selective hardening is necessary. In processor-based systems, the most critical variables and registers must thus be identified for the target application program. An improved algorithm for critical register identification is described and compared to previous work. Fault injection results in a system based on Leon2 are also reported. They demonstrate the impact of micro-architectural characteristics on evaluating the real criticality of the register file. New refinements are suggested for further work based on data dependency analysis.

It can be applied early during the design process and refined along all design steps. However, the main limitation is the huge number of faults that should be injected when large circuits and/or complex workloads and complex error models are considered. This usually leads to practical campaigns based on a randomly selected subset of all potential faults. However, results obtained in these conditions are only estimations and the error on the estimation is never quantified in the literature. This paper presents an approach to quantify both the error on the presented results and the confidence on the computed error interval. Conversely, the computation of the required number of faults to inject in order to achieve a given confidence and error interval is also discussed. Experimental results are shown, fully supporting the presented approach.

Abstract

Several techniques have been proposed for encryption blocks in order to provide protection against faults. These techniques usually exploit some form of redundancy, e.g. by means of error detection codes. However, protection schemes that offer an acceptable error detection rate are in general expensive, while temporal redundancy heavily affects the throughput. In this paper, we propose a new design solution that exploits temporal redundancy by DDR techniques without affecting adversely the throughput at lower clock frequencies. We will also show that the overall costs can be comparable to other solutions recently proposed.

RT-Level fault injections have been performed recently on a few AES IPs and this paper summarizes the main results obtained, highlighting the new results and comparing the outcomes of the two fault injection levels.
