The Bourne-Again Shell (Bash) command-line interface for Linux systems has complex syntax and requires extensive specialized knowledge. Using the natural language to Bash command (NL2SH) translation capabilities of large language models (LLMs) for command composition circumvents these issues. However, the NL2SH performance of LLMs is difficult to assess due to inaccurate test data and unreliable heuristics for determining the functional equivalence of Bash commands. We present a manually verified test dataset of 600 instruction-command pairs and a training dataset of 40,939 pairs, increasing the size of previous datasets by 441% and 135%, respectively. Further, we present a novel functional equivalence heuristic that combines command execution with LLM evaluation of command outputs. Our heuristic can determine the functional equivalence of two Bash commands with 95% confidence, a 16% increase over previous heuristics. Evaluation of popular LLMs using our test dataset and heuristic demonstrates that parsing, in-context learning, in-weight learning, and constrained decoding can improve NL2SH accuracy by up to 32%. Reliably generating structured outputs has become a critical capability for modern language model (LM) applications. Constrained decoding has emerged as the dominant technology across sectors for enforcing structured outputs during generation. Despite its growing adoption, little has been done with the systematic evaluation of the behaviors and performance of constrained decoding. Constrained decoding frameworks have standardized around JSON Schema as a structured data format, with most uses guaranteeing constraint compliance given a schema. However, there is poor understanding of the effectiveness of the methods in practice. We present an evaluation framework to assess constrained decoding approaches across three critical dimensions: efficiency in generating constraint-compliant outputs, coverage of diverse constraint types, and quality of the generated outputs. To facilitate this evaluation, we introduce JSONSchemaBench, a benchmark for constrained decoding comprising 10K real-world JSON schemas that encompass a wide range of constraints with varying complexity. We pair the benchmark with the existing official JSON Schema Test Suite and evaluate six state-of-the-art constrained decoding frameworks, including Guidance, Outlines, Llamacpp, XGrammar, OpenAI, and Gemini. Through extensive experiments, we gain insights into the capabilities and limitations of constrained decoding on structured generation with real-world JSON schemas. Our work provides actionable insights for improving constrained decoding frameworks and structured generation tasks, setting a new standard for evaluating constrained decoding and structured generation. Purpose: Measuring the ortho-positronium (oPs) lifetime in human tissue bears the potential of adding clinically relevant information about the tissue microenvironment to conventional positron emission tomography (PET). Through phantom measurements, we investigate the voxel-wise measurement of oPs lifetime using a commercial long-axial field-of-view (LAFOV) PET scanner. Methods: We prepared four samples with mixtures of Amberlite XAD4, a porous polymeric adsorbent, and water and added between 1.12 MBq and 1.44 MBq of $^{124}$I. The samples were scanned in two different setups: once with a couple of centimeters between each sample (15 minutes scan time) and once with all samples taped together (40 minutes scan time). For each scan, we determine the oPs lifetime for the full samples and at the voxel level. The voxel sizes under consideration are $10.0^3$ mm$^3$, $7.1^3$ mm$^3$ and $4.0^3$ mm$^3$. Results: Amberlite XAD4 allows the preparation of samples with distinct oPs lifetime. Using a Bayesian fitting procedure, the oPs lifetimes in the whole samples are $2.52 \pm 0.03$ ns, $2.37\pm 0.03$ ns, $2.27\pm0.04$ ns and $1.82\pm 0.02$ ns, respectively. The voxel-wise oPs lifetime fits showed that even with $4.0^3$ mm$^3$ voxels the samples are clearly distinguishable and a central voxels have good count statistics. However, the situation with the samples close together remains challenging with respect to the spatial distinction of regions with different oPs lifetimes. Conclusion: Our study shows that positronium lifetime imaging on a commercial LAFOV PET/CT should be feasible under clinical conditions using $^{124}$I.

The high-precision kaonic neon X-ray transitions measurement performed by the SIDDHARTA-2 collaboration at the DA$\Phi$NE collider is reported. Both the X-ray energies and yields for high-n transitions were measured, demonstrating the feasibility of sub-eV Xray spectroscopy for kaonic atoms using low-Z gaseous targets. The measurement provides valuable insights into the de-excitation processes in kaonic atoms, providing new input data for the refinement of the corresponding theoretical models, and a framework for testing Quantum Electrodynamics in strange exotic atoms., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, 1 table

The SIDDHARTA-2 collaboration aims to measure for the first time the shift and width induced on the $1s$ level of kaonic deuterium by the strong interaction. In the preliminary phase to the experiment, a test run using a Helium-4 target was performed to optimize the performance of the full experimental apparatus. This preliminary study highlighted the possibility to measure transition lines coming from intermediate mass kaonic atoms, such as kaonic carbon and kaonic aluminum. In order to measure transitions where strong interaction is manifesting at higher energies, out of the energy range of the SIDDHARTA-2 apparatus, the collaboration is testing a new detector system which exploits a novel compound semiconductor, the Cadmium Zinc Telluride. The SIDDHARTA-2 collaboration built a new cadmium-zinc-telluride (CZT, CdZnTe)-based X-ray detection system, used for the first time in the DA$\Phi$NE electron-positron collider at INFN-LNF. The aim of this work is to show that these detectors present optimal long- and short-term linearity and stability to perform precise spectroscopic measurements in a collider environment. The spectra used as references for calibration are reported, and the results about the linearity and stability studies are presented. It is also discussed and showed what is the proper function to describe all the effects that alter the Gaussian shape in semiconductors, particularly evident in the CZT case. Good residuals and resolutions were obtained for all the calibrations. In a test run with the source and the collider beam on, it was demonstrated that the calibrations made with beam off are optimal also when the beam is on, and the actual systematics in a physics run were estimated. These promising results show the potentialities of this detector in the high rate environment of a particle collider, and pave the way for the use of CZT detectors in kaonic atoms researches and in accelerators, with applications for particle and nuclear physics., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables

In positron emission tomography acquisition (PET), sensitivity along a line of response can vary due to crystal geometrical arrangements in the scanner and/or detector inefficiencies, leading to severe artefacts in the reconstructed image. To mitigate these effects, data must be corrected by a set of normalization coefficients applied to each line of response. The J-PET Modular scanner is a PET device made of 50 cm long plastic strips arranged axially, currently in operation at the Jagiellonian University in Krak\'ow (Poland). We have implemented a normalization method for the large field-of-view plastic-based J-PET Modular scanner using the component-based approach. We estimated the geometric normalization factors for the J-PET Modular scanner using Monte Carlo simulations. We also analysed the effects of variations in detection efficiency. A dedicated cylindrical phantom was simulated to investigate the impact of various factors on image quality. The image quality was quantified in terms of radial and axial uniformity metrics, and the standard deviation to mean intensity ratio, determined for a set of image slices. Without normalization, reconstructions of a uniform cylinder exhibit artefacts. These artefacts were satisfactorily compensated using the normalization factors. Applying geometrical corrections lowers the non-uniformity of the image expressed as a standard deviation-to-mean ratio to a range between 5.5 % to 8.5 %. Computationally, the technique is straightforward to parallelize, making it time-efficient. Positron Annihilation Lifetime Spectroscopy (PALS) is a well-established non-destructive technique used for nanostructural characterization of porous materials. It is based on the annihilation of a positron and an electron. Mean positron lifetime in the material depends on the free voids size and molecular environment, allowing the study of porosity and structural transitions in the nanometer scale. We have developed a novel method enabling spatially resolved PALS, thus providing tomography of nanostructural characterization of an extended object. Correlating space (position) and structural (lifetime) information brings new insight in materials studies, especially in the characterization of the purity and pore distribution. For the first time, a porosity image using stationary positron sources for the simultaneous measurement of the porous polymers XAD4, silica aerogel powder IC3100, and polyvinyl toluene scintillator PVT by the J-PET tomograph is demonstrated

Laser-induced water ablation triggers various physical effects, including atom ionization, optical breakdown of the liquid, phase explosion, cavitation, and shockwave propagation. These effects can be further amplified in heavy water by deuterium-deuterium fusion reactions, which require extremely high energy levels. Laser pulses can be grouped in bursts to achieve the necessary energy within the ablation plasma plume. This study aims to compare the ablation plasma glow and thermal effects in light and heavy water under both single-pulse and burst-mode ultrashort laser irradiation. Notably, this research introduces the novel application of burst laser ablation in heavy water for the first time. The ablation was conducted beneath the water surface along a circular, laser-scanned trajectory, with two distinct ablation regimes: burst mode and single-pulse mode, utilizing lenses with varying focal lengths and different pulse durations. Absorption processes and plasma glow were monitored using visible and infrared detectors, a fast silicon detector, and a thermocouple. The study revealed that the burst regime in heavy water produced the most intense plasma glow when 1 ps laser pulses were used, with shorter pulses yielding less intense glow and the longest pulses yielding the least. Surprisingly, plasma glow at a lower initial power density of 2.6e13 W/cm2 was four times higher than at a higher power density of 8e13 W/cm2. These findings were compared with existing theories on plasma formation in water by ultrashort laser pulses. The observed increase in pulse-to-pulse plasma glow in burst mode was attributed to thermo-electron accumulation effects. The density of excited and hydrated electrons was calculated using both strong-field ionization and avalanche ionization models. Plastic scintillator strips are considered as one of the promising solutions for the cost-effective construction of total-body positron emission tomography, (PET) system. The purpose of the performed measurements is to compare the transparency of long plastic scintillators with dimensions 6 mm x 24 mm x 1000 mm and with all surfaces polished. Six different types of commercial, general purpose, blue-emitting plastic scintillators with low attenuation of visible light were tested, namely: polyvinyl toluene-based BC-408, EJ-200, RP-408, and polystyrene-based Epic, SP32 and UPS-923A. For determination of the best type of plastic scintillator for totalbody Jagiellonian positron emission tomograph (TB-J-PET) construction, emission and transmission spectra, and technical attenuation length (TAL) of blue light-emitting by the scintillators were measured and compared. The TAL values were determined with the use of UV lamp as excitation source, and photodiode as light detector. Emission spectra of investigated scintillators have maxima in the range from 420 nm to 429 nm. The BC-408 and EJ-200 have the highest transmittance values of about 90% at the maximum emission wavelength measured through a 6 mm thick scintillator strip and the highest technical attenuation length reaching about 2000 mm, allowing assembly of long detection modules for time-of-flight (TOF) J-PET scanners. Influence of the 6 mm x 6 mm, 12 mm x 6 mm, 24 mm x 6 mm cross-sections of the 1000 mm long EJ-200 plastic scintillator on the TAL and signal intensity was measured. The growing interest in human-grade total body positron emission tomography (PET) systems has also application in small animal research. Due to the existing limitations in human-based studies involving drug development and novel treatment monitoring, animal-based research became a necessary step for testing and protocol preparation. In this simulation-based study two unconventional, cost-effective small animal total body PET scanners (for mouse and rat studies) have been investigated in order to inspect their feasibility for preclinical research. They were designed with the novel technology explored by the Jagiellonian-PET (J-PET) Collaboration. Two main PET characteristics: sensitivity and spatial resolution were mainly inspected to evaluate their performance. Moreover, the impact of the scintillator dimension and time-of-flight on the latter parameter was examined in order to design the most efficient tomographs. The presented results show that for mouse TB J-PET the achievable system sensitivity is equal to 2.35% and volumetric spatial resolution to 9.46 +- 0.54 mm3, while for rat TB J-PET they are equal to 2.6% and 14.11 +- 0.80 mm3, respectively. Furthermore, it was shown that the designed tomographs are almost parallax-free systems, hence, they resolve the problem of the acceptance criterion tradeoff between enhancing spatial resolution and reducing sensitivity.

In the state-of-the-art Positron Emission Tomography (PET), information about the polarization of annihilation photons is not available. Current PET systems track molecules labeled with positron-emitting radioisotopes by detecting the propagation direction of two photons from positron-electron annihilation. However, annihilation photons carry more information than just the site where they originated. Here we present a novel J-PET scanner built from plastic scintillators, in which annihilation photons interact predominantly via the Compton effect, providing information about photon polarization in addition to information on photon direction of propagation. Theoretically, photons from the decay of positronium in a vacuum are maximally entangled in polarization. However, in matter, when the positron from positronium annihilates with the electron bound to the atom, the question arises whether the photons from such annihilation are maximally entangled. In this work, we determine the distribution of the relative angle between polarization orientations of two photons from positron-electron annihilation in a porous polymer. Contrary to prior results for positron annihilation in aluminum and copper, where the strength of observed correlations is as expected for maximally entangled photons, our results show a significant deviation. We demonstrate that in porous polymer, photon polarization correlation is weaker than for maximally entangled photons but stronger than for separable photons. The data indicate that more than 40% of annihilations in Amberlite resin lead to a non-maximally entangled state. Our result indicates the degree of correlation depends on the annihilation mechanism and the molecular arrangement. We anticipate that the introduced Compton interaction-based PET system opens a promising perspective for exploring polarization correlations in PET as a novel diagnostic indicator.

The primary goal of the AEgIS experiment is to precisely measure the free fall of antihydrogen within Earth's gravitational field. To this end, a cold ~50K antihydrogen beam has to pass through two grids forming a moir\'e deflectometer before annihilating onto a position-sensitive detector, which shall determine the vertical position of the annihilation vertex relative to the grids with micrometric accuracy. Here we introduce a vertexing detector based on a modified mobile camera sensor and experimentally demonstrate that it can measure the position of antiproton annihilations with an accuracy of $0.62^{+0.40}_{-0.22}\mu m$, which represents a 35-fold improvement over the previous state-of-the-art for real-time antiproton vertexing. Importantly, these antiproton detection methods are directly applicable to antihydrogen. Moreover, the sensitivity to light of the sensor enables the in-situ calibration of the moir\'e deflectometer, significantly reducing systematic errors. This sensor emerges as a breakthrough technology for achieving the \aegis scientific goals and has been selected as the basis for the development of a large-area detector for conducting antihydrogen gravity measurements., Comment: 21 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables

An HPGe detector equipped with a transistor reset preamplifier and readout with a CAEN DT5781 fast pulse digitizer was employed in the measurement of X-rays from kaonic lead at the DA$\Phi$NE $e^+e^-$ collider at the Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati of INFN. A thin scintillator in front of a lead target was used to select kaons impinging on it and to form the trigger for the HPGe detector. We present the results of the kaonic lead feasibility measurement, where we show that the resolution of the HPGe detector in regular beam conditions remains the same as that without the beam and that a satisfactory background reduction can be achieved. This measurement serves as a test bed for future dedicated kaonic X-rays measurements for the more precise determination of the charged kaon mass., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures

Discrete symmetries play an important role in particle physics with violation of CP connected to the matter-antimatter imbalance in the Universe. We report the most precise test of P, T and CP invariance in decays of ortho-positronium, performed with methodology involving polarization of photons from these decays. Positronium, the simplest bound state of an electron and positron, is of recent interest with discrepancies reported between measured hyperfine energy structure and theory at the level of $10^{-4}$ signaling a need for better understanding of the positronium system at this level. We test discrete symmetries using photon polarizations determined via Compton scattering in the dedicated J-PET tomograph on an event-by-event basis and without the need to control the spin of the positronium with an external magnetic field, in contrast to previous experiments. In this paper we present the results of a new kaonic helium-4 measurement with a 1.37 g/l gaseous target by the SIDDHARTA-2 experiment at the DA{\Phi}NE collider. We measured, for the first time, the energies and yields of three transitions belonging to the Mseries. Moreover, we improved by a factor about three, the statistical precision of the 2p level energy shift and width induced by the strong interaction, obtaining the most precise measurement for gaseous kaonic helium, and measured the yield of the L{\alpha} transition at the employed density, providing a new experimental input to investigate the density dependence of kaonic atoms transitions yield., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, 3 tables

Recently, canted antiferromagnets offer great potential for fundamental research and applications due to their unique properties. The presence of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction leads to the existence of a weak ferromagnetic moment at room temperature. We study both theoretically and experimentally microwave spin pumping by the quasi-ferromagnetic mode from a canted easy plane antiferromagnet with weak ferromagnetism FeBO3. The conversion of a microwave signal into the constant voltage is realized using the inverse spin Hall effect in an iron borate/heavy metal heterostructure. We use an additional bias magnetic field to selectively tune the resonance frequency of such a microwave detector over a wide range up to 43.5 GHz with potential sensitivity near 2.5 microV/W. We confirm the pure spin current nature by changing polarity of the detected via inverse spin Hall effect voltage by switching the direction of the bias magnetic field. The SIDDHARTA-2 collaboration at the INFN Laboratories of Frascati (LNF) aims to perform groundbreaking measurements on kaonic atoms. In parallel and beyond the ongoing kaonic deuterium, presently running on the DA$\Phi$NE collider at LNF, we plan to install additional detectors to perform further kaonic atoms' studies, taking advantage of the unique low energy and low momentum spread $K^-$ beam delivered by the at-rest decay of the $\phi$ meson. CdZnTe devices are ideal for detecting transitions toward both the upper and lower levels of intermediate-mass kaonic atoms, like kaonic carbon and aluminium, which have an important impact on the strangeness sector of nuclear physics. We present the results obtained in a set of preliminary tests conducted on DA$\Phi$NE, in view of measurements foreseen in 2024, with the twofold aim to tune the timing window required to reject the extremely high electromagnetic background, and to quantify the readout electronics saturation effect due to the high rate, when placed close to the Interaction Region (IR). In the first test we used commercial devices and electronics, while for the second one both were customized at the IMEM-CNR of Parma and the University of Palermo. The results confirmed the possibility of finding and matching a proper timing window where to identify the signal events and proved better performances, in terms of energy resolution, of the custom system. In both cases, strong saturation effects were confirmed, accounting for a loss of almost 90\% of the events, which will be overcome by a dedicated shielding structure foreseen for the final experimental setup.

Characterizing urban environments with broad coverages and high precision is more important than ever for achieving the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as half of the world's populations are living in cities. Urban building height as a fundamental 3D urban structural feature has far-reaching applications. However, so far, producing readily available datasets of recent urban building heights with fine spatial resolutions and global coverages remains a challenging task. Here, we provide an up-to-date global product of urban building heights based on a fine grid size of 150 m around 2020 by combining the spaceborne lidar instrument of GEDI and multi-sourced data including remotely sensed images (i.e., Landsat-8, Sentinel-2, and Sentinel-1) and topographic data. Our results revealed that the estimated method of building height samples based on the GEDI data was effective with 0.78 of Pearson's r and 3.67 m of RMSE in comparison to the reference data. The mapping product also demonstrated good performance as indicated by its strong correlation with the reference data (i.e., Pearson's r = 0.71, RMSE = 4.60 m). Compared with the currently existing products, our global urban building height map holds the ability to provide a higher spatial resolution (i.e., 150 m) with a great level of inherent details about the spatial heterogeneity and flexibility of updating using the GEDI samples as inputs. This work will boost future urban studies across many fields including climate, environmental, ecological, and social sciences.

The present study focuses on experimental investigations of spin current across the interface of an iridate/manganite heterostructure (SrIrO3/La0.7Sr0.3MnO3) consisting of oxide epitaxial films with nanometer thickness. Pure spin current is induced by microwave irradiation in the GHz frequency band, specifically under conditions of ferromagnetic resonance. The detection of spin current is achieved through the inverse spin-Hall effect, which measures the charge current arising on the electrically conductive SrIrO3 film with strong spin-orbit interaction. To quantify the efficiency of spin current conversion to charge current, the angular dependences of spin magnetoresistance of the iridate/manganite interface are measured, thereby determining the spin- Hall angle., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures

In this paper, we explore the potential of Large Language Models (LLMs) to reason about threats, generate information about tools, and automate cyber campaigns. We begin with a manual exploration of LLMs in supporting specific threat-related actions and decisions. We proceed by automating the decision process in a cyber campaign. We present prompt engineering approaches for a plan-act-report loop for one action of a threat campaign and and a prompt chaining design that directs the sequential decision process of a multi-action campaign. We assess the extent of LLM's cyber-specific knowledge w.r.t the short campaign we demonstrate and provide insights into prompt design for eliciting actionable responses. We discuss the potential impact of LLMs on the threat landscape and the ethical considerations of using LLMs for accelerating threat actor capabilities. We report a promising, yet concerning, application of generative AI to cyber threats. However, the LLM's capabilities to deal with more complex networks, sophisticated vulnerabilities, and the sensitivity of prompts are open questions. This research should spur deliberations over the inevitable advancements in LLM-supported cyber adversarial landscape.

Determining the oxidation states of metals assumes great importance in various applications because a variation in the oxidation number can drastically influence the material properties. As an example, this becomes evident in edible liquids like wine and oil, where a change in the oxidation states of the contained metals can significantly modify both the overall quality and taste. To this end, here we present the MITIQO project, which aims to identify oxidation states of metals in edible liquids utilizing X-ray emission with Bragg spectroscopy. This is achieved using the VOXES crystal spectrometer, developed at INFN National Laboratories of Frascati (LNF), employing mosaic crystal (HAPG) in the Von Hamos configuration. This combination allow us to work with effective source sizes of up to a few millimeters and improves the typical low efficiency of Bragg spectroscopy, a crucial aspect when studying liquids with low metal concentration. Here we showcase the concept behind MITIQO, for a liquid solution containing oxidized iron. We performed several high-resolution emission spectra measurements, for the liquid and for different powdered samples containing oxidized and pure iron. By looking at the spectral features of the iron's K$\beta$ emission lineshape, we were able to obtain, for a liquid, a result consistent with the oxidized iron powders and successfully quantifying the effect of oxidation.

Studies based on imaging the annihilation of the electron (e$^{-}$) and its antiparticle positron (e$^{+}$) open up several interesting applications in nuclear medicine and fundamental research. The annihilation process involves both the direct conversion of e$^{+}$e$^{-}$ into photons and the formation of their atomically bound state, the positronium atom (Ps), which can be used as a probe for fundamental studies. With the ability to produce large quantities of Ps, manipulate them in long-lived Ps states, and image their annihilations after a free fall or after passing through atomic interferometers, this purely leptonic antimatter system can be used to perform inertial sensing studies in view of a direct test of Einstein equivalence principle. It is envisioned that modular multistrip detectors can be exploited as potential detection units for this kind of studies. In this work, we report the results of the first feasibility study performed on a e$^{+}$ beamline using two detection modules to evaluate their reconstruction performance and spatial resolution for imaging e$^{+}$e$^{-}$ annihilations and thus their applicability for gravitational studies of Ps.

We report a study of the original image reconstruction algorithm based on the time-of-flight maximum likelihood expectation maximisation (TOF MLEM), developed for the total-body (TB) Jagiellonian PET (J-PET) scanners. The method is applicable to generic cylindrical or modular multi-layer layouts and is extendable to multi-photon imaging. The system response matrix (SRM) is represented as a set of analytical functions, uniquely defined for each pair of plastic scintillator strips used for the detection. A realistic resolution model (RM) in detector space is derived from fitting the Monte Carlo simulated emissions and detections of annihilation photons on oblique transverse planes. Additional kernels embedded in SRM account for TOF, parallax effect and axial smearing. The algorithm was tested on datasets, simulated in GATE for the NEMA IEC and static XCAT phantoms inside a 24-module 2-layer TB J-PET. Compared to the reference TOF MLEM with none or a shift-invariant RM, an improvement was observed, as evaluated by the analysis of image quality, difference images and ground truth metrics. We also reconstructed the data with additive contributions, pre-filtered geometrically and with non-TOF scatter correction applied. Despite some deterioration, the obtained results still capitalise on the realistic RM with better edge preservation and superior ground truth metrics. The envisioned prospects of the TOF MLEM with analytical SRM include its application in multi-photon imaging and further upgrade to account for the non-collinearity, positron range and other factors.

The SIDDHARTA-2 experiment installed at the DA$\mathrm{\Phi}$NE collider of INFN-LNF performed, for the first time, measurements of high-n transitions in intermediate mass kaonic atoms during the data taking campaigns of 2021 and 2022. Kaonic carbon, oxygen, nitrogen and aluminium transitions, which occur in the setup materials, were measured by using the kaons stopped in the gaseous helium target cell with aluminium frames and Kapton walls, and are reported in this paper. These new kaonic atoms measurements add valuable input to the kaonic atoms transitions data base, which is used as a reference for theories and models of the low-energy strong interaction between antikaon and nuclei. Moreover, these results pave the way for future dedicated kaonic atoms measurements through the whole periodic table and to a new era for the antikaon-nuclei studies at low energy., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures

Background: Total-Body imaging offers high sensitivity, single-bed position, and low dose, but high construction costs limit worldwide utilization. This study compares existing and developing tomographs using plastic scintillators via simulations to propose a cost-efficient Total-Body PET scanner. Methods: Simulations of eight uEXPLORER tomographs with different scintillator materials, axial field-of-view, and detector configuration, and eight J-PET scanners with various field-of-view, plastic scintillator cross-sections, and layers were performed. Biograph Vision was also simulated. Two types of simulations were conducted with a central source and a water-filled phantom. Results: BGO crystal-based scanners showed the best sensitivity (350 cps/kBq at the center). Sparse geometry or LYSO crystals reduced sensitivity. J-PET design showed similar sensitivity to sparse LYSO detectors, with full body coverage and additional gain for brain imaging. Conclusion: The J-PET tomography system using plastic scintillators could be a cost-efficient alternative for Total-Body PET scanners, overcoming high construction costs while maintaining sensitivity

Objective: The aim of this work is to investigate the feasibility of the Jagiellonian Positron Emission Tomography (J-PET) scanner for intra-treatment proton beam range monitoring. Approach: The Monte Carlo simulation studies with GATE and PET image reconstruction with CASToR were performed in order to compare six J-PET scanner geometries (three dual-heads and three cylindrical). We simulated proton irradiation of a PMMA phantom with a Single Pencil Beam (SPB) and Spread-Out Bragg Peak (SOBP) of various ranges. The sensitivity and precision of each scanner were calculated, and considering the setup's cost-effectiveness, we indicated potentially optimal geometries for the J-PET scanner prototype dedicated to the proton beam range assessment. Main results: The investigations indicate that the double-layer cylindrical and triple-layer double-head configurations are the most promising for clinical application. We found that the scanner sensitivity is of the order of 10$^{-5}$ coincidences per primary proton, while the precision of the range assessment for both SPB and SOBP irradiation plans was found below 1 mm. Among the scanners with the same number of detector modules, the best results are found for the triple-layer dual-head geometry. Significance: We performed simulation studies demonstrating that the feasibility of the J-PET detector for PET-based proton beam therapy range monitoring is possible with reasonable sensitivity and precision enabling its pre-clinical tests in the clinical proton therapy environment. Considering the sensitivity, precision and cost-effectiveness, the double-layer cylindrical and triple-layer dual-head J-PET geometry configurations seem promising for the future clinical application. Positronium is the simplest bound state, built of an electron and a positron. Studies of positronium in vacuum and its decays in medium tell us about Quantum Electrodynamics, QED, and about the structure of matter and biological processes of living organisms at the nanoscale, respectively. Spectroscopic measurements constrain our understanding of QED bound state theory. Searches for rare decays and measurements of the effect of gravitation on positronium are used to look for new physics phenomena. In biological materials positronium decays are sensitive to the inter- and intra-molecular structure and to the metabolism of living organisms ranging from single cells to human beings. This leads to new ideas of positronium imaging in medicine using the fact that during positron emission tomography (PET) as much as 40% of positron annihilation occurs through the production of positronium atoms inside the patient's body. A new generation of the high sensitivity and multi-photon total-body PET systems opens perspectives for clinical applications of positronium as a biomarker of tissue pathology and the degree of tissue oxidation., Comment: Colloquium, 23 pages, preprint of article in Reviews of Modern Physics
