1. Mirror nucleon-transfer reactions from $^{18}$Ne and $^{18}$O

Abstract

The $^{18}$Ne(d,t)$^{17}$Ne and $^{18}$Ne(d,$^3$He)$^{17}$F single-nucleon pickup reactions were measured at 16.5 MeV/nucleon in inverse kinematics together with elastic and inelastic scattering channels. The full set of measured exclusive differential cross sections was compared with the mirror reaction channels on stable $^{18}$O after consistent reanalysis using coupled reaction channels calculations. Within this interpretation scheme, most of the spectroscopic factors extracted for the population of unbound states in $^{17}$F match within uncertainties with their mirror partners in $^{17}$O. However, for the deeply-bound neutron removal channel to $^{17}$Ne, a significant symmetry breaking with the mirror proton-removal channel leading to $^{17}$N is evidenced by an overall single-particle strength reduction.

Abstract

In this paper we present the first high-resolution laser spectroscopy results obtained at the GISELE laser laboratory of the GANIL-SPIRAL2 facility, in preparation for the first experiments with the S$^3$-Low Energy Branch. Studies of neutron-deficient radioactive isotopes of erbium and tin represent the first physics cases to be studied at S$^3$. The measured isotope-shift and hyperfine structure data are presented for stable isotopes of these elements. The erbium isotopes were studied using the $4f^{12}6s^2$ $^3H_6 \rightarrow 4f^{12}(^3 H)6s6p$ $J = 5$ atomic transition (415 nm) and the tin isotopes were studied by the $5s^25p^2 (^3P_0) \rightarrow 5s^25p6s (^3P_1)$ atomic transition (286.4 nm), and are used as a benchmark of the laser setup. Additionally, the tin isotopes were studied by the $5s^25p6s (^3P_1) \rightarrow 5s^25p6p (^3P_2)$ atomic transition (811.6 nm), for which new isotope-shift data was obtained and the corresponding field-shift $F_{812}$ and mass-shift $M_{812}$ factors are presented.

Abstract

We report on direct time-of-flight based mass measurements of 16 light neutron-rich nuclei. These include the first determination of the masses of the Borromean drip-line nuclei $^{19}$B, $^{22}$C and $^{29}$F as well as that of $^{34}$Na. In addition, the most precise determinations to date for $^{23}$N and $^{31}$Ne are reported. Coupled with recent interaction cross-section measurements, the present results support the occurrence of a two-neutron halo in $^{22}$C, with a dominant $\nu2s_{1/2}^2$ configuration, and a single-neutron halo in $^{31}$Ne with the valence neutron occupying predominantly the 2$p_{3/2}$ orbital. Despite a very low two-neutron separation energy the development of a halo in $^{19}$B is hindered by the 1$d_{5/2}^2$ character of the valence neutrons., Comment: 5 pages

Abstract

The ACtive TARget and Time Projection Chamber (ACTAR TPC) is a novel gas-filled detector that has recently been constructed at GANIL. This versatile detector is a gaseous thick target that allows the tracking of charged particles in three dimensions and provides a precise reaction energy reconstruction from the vertex position. A commissioning experiment using resonant scattering of a 3.2MeV/nucleon 18O beam on an isobutane gas (proton) target was performed. The beam and the heavy scattered ions were stopped in the gas volume, while the light recoil left the active volume and were stopped in auxiliary silicon detectors. A dedicated tracking algorithm was applied to determine the angle of emission and the length of the trajectory of the ions, to reconstruct the reaction kinematics used to built the excitation functions of the 1H(18O, 18O)1H and 1H(18O, 15N)4He reactions. In this article, we describe the design of the detector and the data analysis, that resulted in center of mass reaction energy resolutions of 38(4)keV FWHM and 54(9)keV FWHM for the proton and alpha channels, respectively. Abstract

The Advanced GAmma Tracking Array (AGATA) has been installed at the GANIL facility, Caen-France. This setup exploits the stable and radioactive heavy-ions beams delivered by the cyclotron accelerator complex of GANIL. Additionally, it benefits from a large palette of ancillary detectors and spectrometers to address in-beam γ-ray spectroscopy of exotic nuclei. The set-up has been designed to couple AGATA with a magnetic spectrometer, charged-particle and neutron detectors, scintillators for the detection of high-energy γ rays and other devices such as a plunger to measure nuclear lifetimes. In this paper, the design and the mechanical characteristics of the set-up are described. Based on simulations, expected performances of the AGATA l π array are presented. Abstract

International audience; Measurements and ion optic calculations showed that the large momentum acceptance of the VAMOS spectrometer at GANIL could be further increased from $\sim$ 11% to $\sim$ 30% by suitably enlarging the dimensions of the detectors used at the focal plane. Such a new detection system built for the focal plane of VAMOS is described. It consists of larger area detectors (1000 mm × 150 mm) namely, a Multi-Wire Parallel Plate Avalanche Counter (MWPPAC), two drift chambers, a segmented ionization chamber and an array of Si detectors. Compared to the earlier existing system (VAMOS), we show that the new system (VAMOS++) has a dispersion-independent momentum acceptance . Additionally a start detector (MWPPAC) has been introduced near the target to further improve the mass resolution to $\sim$ 1/220. The performance of the VAMOS++ spectrometer is demonstrated using measurements of residues formed in the collisions of 129Xe at 967 MeV on 197Au.

Abstract

We present the first missing mass spectrum of the unbound nucleus He10, measured at RIKEN using the Li11(d,He3) reaction at 50A MeV. He10 is believed to be a three-body He8+n+n resonance beyond the limit of nuclear binding. Our observation of a new decay branch, 6He+4n, and of a puzzling reduction of the Li11(d,He3)He10 cross section challenges this view. Moreover, our experiment shows a new trend in the evolution of the proton spectroscopic strength in Li isotopes deduced from the comparison of the (d,He3) cross sections on Li7,8,9,11 with theoretical predictions. We discuss new questions about physics beyond the limits of nuclear existence raised by these findings.

International audience; In the framework of the SPIRAL2 project atGANIL, the Super-Separator-Spectrometer (S3) is dedicatedto experiments using the very high intensity stablebeams ([10 plA) delivered by the superconducting linearaccelerator up to 14.5 A.MeV. Specific target stations arerequired to sustain these unprecedented beam intensities. Aprototype target station for actinides was designed andmanufactured, which main characteristics are described inthis paper. In order to commission this system and checkthe behavior of target materials, preliminary tests with 7.7A.MeV 129Xe beams were performed at 100 pnA. Theresults of these tests are presented here.

We found rather large yields for the $^{6}$He + 4n decay channel especially for higher excitation energy, which suggest the importance of the $^{6}$He + 4n structure in $^{10}$He.

Abstract

WEPF14; International audience; In the framework of SPIRAL 2 ion beams, several beam profile monitors are presently being developed at GANIL. One of them is a low-intensity beam-profile monitor that works as a secondary electron detector. This Emission-Foil Monitor (EFM) will be used in the radioactive beam lines of SPIRAL2 and in the experimental rooms of this new facility. The ions produce secondary electrons when they are stopped in an aluminium emissive foil. The electrons are then accelerated using an electric field and guided using a magnetic field to a double-stage microchannel plate (MCP). A 2D pixellated pad plane placed below the MCP is used to collect the signals. The magnetic field created by permanent magnets in a closed magnetic circuit configuration permits the beam-profile reconstruction to be achieved with a good resolution. The EFM can visualize beam-profile intensities between only a few pps to as much as 109 pps and with energies as low as several keV. This profiler has been under development since 2009 and is currently manufactured. Recent results of this monitor are presented in this article.

We report on direct time-of-flight based mass measurements of 16 light neutron-rich nuclei. These include the first determination of the masses of the Borromean drip-line nuclei (19)B, (22)C, and (29)F as well as that of (34)Na. In addition, the most precise determinations to date for (23)N and (31)Ne are reported. Coupled with recent interaction cross-section measurements, the present results support the occurrence of a two-neutron halo in (22)C, with a dominant ν2s(1/2)(2) configuration, and a single-neutron halo in (31)Ne with the valence neutron occupying predominantly the 2p(3/2) orbital. Despite a very low two-neutron separation energy the development of a halo in (19)B is hindered by the 1d(5/2)(2) character of the valence neutrons.

Abstract

International audience; Proton elastic scatterings of neutron-rich nuclei 23F and 25F have been measured for the first time at 289 and 298 MeV/nucleon, respectively, using the MUST2 silicon strip detector array and RIBF facility at RIKEN. The differential cross section of 25F was found to be smaller than the calculation with the global potential by Koning and Deraloche. The small cross section of 25F can be well reproduced by an optical model calculation with a shallow and long-tail potential.

Abstract

RIBF57 Collaboration; International audience; The drip-line 24O nucleus combines several properties which are challenging our understanding of the nuclear structure: it has no bound excited state, and is expected as a neutron-skin nucleus with low-lying resonances. It presents a new shell gap effect at N = 16. To investigate the neutron excitations and the characteristics of this gap, the proton elastic and inelastic scattering by 24O were measured, using the light charged particle spectroscopy technique; the excitation energies of the unbound states were deduced via missing mass method. The experiment was carried out at the RIBF facility in the BigRIPS line, combining the unique intensities of the 24O beam with the state-of-the-art Si-telescope array MUST2. The analysis and the preliminary results are discussed.

Abstract

A low-pressure gas tracker for heavy ions is described. It is based on a drift chamber with four series of multiplying wires for energy loss measurement and underlying strips for position and angle determination. Results of tests with an α-source and with low-energy heavy-ion beams are presented. They indicate the suitability of such a detector in a wide range of experiments with heavy ions where a low energy threshold, a large solid angle, together with a precise measurement of ion trajectories and identification is needed. In particular, the application as a prototype of the focal plane detector for the large-acceptance spectrometer MAGNEX is discussed.

Abstract

We tested new position sensitive detectors for the focal plane of the magnetic spectrograph SPEG. The position resolution was improved to 0.4 instead of 0.8 mm. The differential nonlinearity was reduced by one order of magnitude to a level of less than 1%.

Abstract

The drip-line 24O nucleus combines several properties which are challenging our understanding of the nuclear structure: it has no bound excited state, and is expected as a neutron-skin nucleus with low-lying resonances. It presents a new shell gap effect at N = 16. To investigate the neutron excitations and the characteristics of this gap, the proton elastic and inelastic scattering by 24O were measured, using the light charged particle spectroscopy technique; the excitation energies of the unbound states were deduced via missing mass method. The experiment was carried out at the RIBF facility in the BigRIPS line, combining the unique intensities of the 24O beam with the state-of-the-art Si-telescope array MUST2. The analysis and the preliminary results are discussed.
