Abstract

To improve the understanding of human gait and to facilitate novel developments in gait rehabilitation, the neural correlates of human gait as measured by means of non-invasive electroencephalography (EEG) have been investigated recently. Particularly, gait-related event-related brain potentials (gERPs) may provide information about the functional role of cortical brain regions in human gait control. The purpose of this paper is to explore possible experimental and technical solutions for time-sensitive analysis of human gait-related ERPs during spontaneous and instructed treadmill walking. A solution (HW/SW) for synchronous recording of gait- and EEG data was developed, tested and piloted. The solution consists of a custom-made USB synchronization interface, a time-synchronization module and a data merging module, allowing temporal synchronization of recording devices for time-sensitive extraction of gait markers for analysis of gait-related ERPs and for the training of artificial neural networks. In the present manuscript, the hardware and software components were tested with the following devices: A treadmill with an integrated pressure plate for gait analysis (zebris FDM-T) and an Acticap non-wireless 32-channel EEG-system (Brain Products GmbH). The usability and validity of the developed solution was tested in a pilot study (n = 3 healthy participants, n=3 females, mean age = 22.75 years). Recorded EEG data was segmented and analyzed according to the detected gait markers for the analysis of gait-related ERPs. Finally, EEG periods were used to train a deep learning artificial neural network as classifier of gait phases. The results obtained in this pilot study, although preliminary, support the feasibility of the solution for the application of gait-related EEG analysis..

Abstract

Southern Ocean ecosystems are under pressure from resource exploitation and climate change1,2. Mitigation requires the identification and protection of Areas of Ecological Significance (AESs), which have so far not been determined at the ocean-basin scale. Here, using assemblage-level tracking of marine predators, we identify AESs for this globally important region and assess current threats and protection levels. Integration of more than 4,000 tracks from 17 bird and mammal species reveals AESs around sub-Antarctic islands in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans and over the Antarctic continental shelf. Fishing pressure is disproportionately concentrated inside AESs, and climate change over the next century is predicted to impose pressure on these areas, particularly around the Antarctic continent. At present, 7.1% of the ocean south of 40°S is under formal protection, including 29% of the total AESs. The establishment and regular revision of networks of protection that encompass AESs are needed to provide long-term mitigation of growing pressures on Southern Ocean ecosystems.

Abstract

The Retrospective Analysis of Antarctic Tracking Data (RAATD) is a Scientific Committee for Antarctic Research project led jointly by the Expert Groups on Birds and Marine Mammals and Antarctic Biodiversity Informatics, and endorsed by the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources. RAATD consolidated tracking data for multiple species of Antarctic meso- and top-predators to identify Areas of Ecological Significance. These datasets and accompanying syntheses provide a greater understanding of fundamental ecosystem processes in the Southern Ocean, support modelling of predator distributions under future climate scenarios and create inputs that can be incorporated into decision making processes by management authorities. In this data paper, we present the compiled tracking data from research groups that have worked in the Antarctic since the 1990s. The data are publicly available through biodiversity.aq and the Ocean Biogeographic Information System. The archive includes tracking data from over 70 contributors across 12 national Antarctic programs, and includes data from 17 predator species, 4060 individual animals, and over 2.9 million observed locations.

Abstract

We consider the design of dimensional analysis experiments when there is more than a single response. We first give a brief overview of dimensional analysis experiments and the dimensional analysis (DA) procedure. The validity of the DA method for univariate responses was established by the Buckingham $\Pi$-Theorem in the early 20th century. We extend the theorem to the multivariate case, develop basic criteria for multivariate design of DA and give guidelines for design construction. Finally, we illustrate the construction of designs for DA experiments for an example involving the design of a heat exchanger.

27. A family of orthogonal main effects screening designs for mixed-level factors

Abstract

AbstractThere is limited literature on screening when some factors are at three levels and others are at two levels. This topic has seen renewed interest of late following the introduction of the definitive screening design structure by Jones and Nachtsheim 2011and Xiao et al. 2012. Two well-known examples are Taguchi’s L18and L36designs. However, these designs are limited in two ways. First, they only allow for either 18 or 36 runs, which is restrictive. Second, they provide no protection against bias of the main effects due to active two-factor interactions. In this article, we introduce a family of orthogonal, mixed-level screening designs in multiples of eight runs. Our 16-run design can accommodate up to four continuous three-level factors and up to eight two-level factors. The three-level factors must be continuous, whereas the two-level factors can be either continuous or categorical. All of our designs supply substantial bias protection of the main effects estimates due to active two-factor interactions.

Abstract

The North Sea is one of the most industrialised marine regions globally. We integrated cetacean-dedicated aerial surveys (2015–2022) with environmental covariates and ship positions from the Automatic Identification System (AIS) to investigate the disturbance radius and duration on harbour porpoise distribution. This study is based on 81,511 km of line-transect survey effort, during which 6511 harbour porpoise groups (8597 individuals) were sighted. Several proxies for ship disturbance were compared, identifying those best explaining the observed distribution. Better model performance was achieved by integrating maritime traffic, with frequent traffic representing the most significant disturbance to harbour porpoise distribution. Porpoises avoided areas frequented by numerous vessels up to distances of 9 km. The number of ships and average approach distance over time improved model performance, while reasons for the lower performance of predicted ship sound levels remain unclear. This study demonstrates the short-term effects of maritime traffic on harbour porpoise distribution. Abstract

There is no clear recommendation for wound closure material in foot and ankle surgery. Thus, we hypothesized that there was no difference in clinical outcomes among 3 suture materials, namely, absorbable sutures, nonabsorbable sutures, and metallic staples. This study compared the 3 materials for wound closure in foot and ankle surgery. In this prospective randomized study, 124 patients were randomly divided into the nonabsorbable suture group, absorbable suture group, and staple group. ASEPSIS score, Hollander Wound Evaluation Scale, and numerical rating scale (regarding pain and satisfaction) were collected at first dressing changes, suture removal, and 6 weeks after surgery. Suture time and incision length were recorded. No significant differences were detected for the ASEPSIS and Hollander Wound Evaluation Scale scores. There was significantly more pain after 6 weeks in the nonabsorbable suture group. The closure time (13 s/cm) with staples was significantly lower in the nonabsorbable suture group than in the other groups. Regardless of wound closure material, male sex and obesity appeared to be associated with a higher risk for the occurrence of wound complications. The 3 suture materials showed no significant differences regarding the frequency of wound complications. Staples and absorbable sutures should therefore be considered in the repertoire of suture materials used in foot and ankle surgery. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

39. Misleading Morphologic and Phenotypic Features (Transdifferentiation) in Solitary Fibrous Tumor of the Head and Neck

Abstract

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a rare fibroblastic neoplasm with potentially malignant behavior that may develop in any anatomic site and may involve the head and neck (H&N) region as well. Although typical SFT has a relatively characteristic morphology, its morphologic spectrum is extraordinarily broad and also includes rare cases with dedifferentiation or transdifferentiation which result in aberrant morphologic and/or immunohistochemical features. However, since virtually all cases are molecularly characterized by NAB2::STAT6gene fusions, molecular genetic methods or STAT6 immunohistochemistry can be effectively used in confirming the diagnosis. Herein, we report 3 diagnostically challenging H&N SFT cases with an unusual morphology and/or phenotypes closely mimicking other well-known H&N entities. The tumors originated in the oral minor salivary glands, the base of the tongue, and sinonasal tract and closely resembled hyalinizing clear cell carcinoma of the salivary gland, adenocarcinoma not otherwise specified and biphenotypic sinonasal sarcoma, respectively. All cases were positive for cytokeratins, variably expressed S100 protein, showed diffuse nuclear STAT6 positivity, and harbored NAB2::STAT6gene fusions.

44. Stereoselective Oxidative Cyclization of N-Allyl Benzamides to Oxaz(ol)ines

Abstract

This study presents an enantioselective oxidative cyclization of N-allyl carboxamides via a chiral triazole-substituted iodoarene catalyst. The method allows the synthesis of highly enantioenriched oxazolines and oxazines, with yields of up to 94% and enantioselectivities of up to 98% ee. Quaternary stereocenters can be constructed and, besides N-allyl amides, the corresponding thioamides and imideamides are well tolerated as substrates, giving rise to a plethora of chiral 5-membered N-heterocycles. By applying a multitude of further functionalizations, we finally demonstrate the high value of the observed chiral heterocycles as strategic intermediates for the synthesis of other enantioenriched target structures.

Abstract

The direct hydroxylation of 2-aryloxazolines via a deprotonative magnesiation using TMPMgCl·LiCl and subsequent oxidation with molecular oxygen or air as a green oxidant is reported. This method proceeds under mild conditions at room temperature with high regioselectivity and chemoselectivity. The obtained phenols exhibit tunable luminescence properties, induced by excited-state intramolecular proton transfer. This method opens a new opportunity for the sustainable synthesis of luminescent organic molecules.
