Abstract

The exponential increase of availability of digital data and the necessity to process it in business and scientific fields has literally forced upon us the need to analyze and mine useful knowledge from it. Traditionally data mining has used a data warehousing model of gathering all data into a central site, and then running an algorithm upon that data. Such a centralized approach is fundamentally inappropriate due to many reasons like huge amount of data, infeasibility to centralize data stored at multiple sites, bandwidth limitation and privacy concerns. To solve these problems, Distributed Data Mining (DDM) has emerged as a hot research area. Careful attention in the usage of distributed resources of data, computing, communication, and human factors in a near optimal fashion are paid by distributed data mining. DDM is gaining attention in peer-to-peer (P2P) systems which are emerging as a choice of solution for applications such as file sharing, collaborative movie and song scoring, electronic commerce, and surveillance using sensor networks. The main intension of this draft paper is to provide an overview of DDM and P2P Data Mining. 2. Culture-Independent Raman Spectroscopic Identification of Bacterial Pathogens from Clinical Samples Using Deep Transfer Learning

Abstract

The rapid identification of bacterial pathogens in clinical samples like blood, urine, pus, and sputum is the need of the hour. Conventional bacterial identification methods like culturing and nucleic acid-based amplification have limitations like poor sensitivity, high cost, slow turnaround time, etc. Raman spectroscopy, a label-free and noninvasive technique, has overcome these drawbacks by providing rapid biochemical signatures from a single bacterium. Raman spectroscopy combined with chemometric methods has been used effectively to identify pathogens. However, a robust approach is needed to utilize Raman features for accurate classification while dealing with complex data sets such as spectra obtained from clinical isolates, showing high sample-to-sample heterogeneity. In this study, we have used Raman spectroscopy-based identification of pathogens from clinical isolates using a deep transfer learning approach at the single-cell level resolution. We have used the data-augmentation method to increase the volume of spectra needed for deep-learning analysis. Our ResNet model could specifically extract the spectral features of eight different pathogenic bacterial species with a 99.99% classification accuracy. The robustness of our model was validated on a set of blinded data sets, a mix of cultured and noncultured bacterial isolates of various origins and types. Our proposed ResNet model efficiently identified the pathogens from the blinded data set with high accuracy, providing a robust and rapid bacterial identification platform for clinical microbiology.

Abstract

A major effort on the part of Real estate firms is to increase and retain their customers and it is very essential that to know the factors influencing customers’ satisfaction and retention. This study is done with the purposes of identifying the extrinsic factors that affect the purchasing decision of the real estate customers of villas and apartments. This study uses survey questionnaires to obtain information from real estate consumers. The study was conducted in Thrissur district. The study found that the most influencing one in extrinsic factors which affect the purchase decision of real estate consumers is the availability of the facility of waste disposal. The study also discuss the opinion of real estate consumers about the changes needed in the structure of flats and villas in the light of natural calamities occurred in Kerala.

6. Immunization Practices of Pediatricians for Children Younger Than Five Years in Coastal South India

Abstract

Context: Immunization helps in controlling infectious diseases. Child immunization is an important component of child survival programs in India, which mainly follows the National Immunization Schedule. Also, many of the injection practices followed are not safe. Aims: To study the practices of pediatricians toward the immunization of children younger than 5 years and injection-related waste management. Settings and Design: Cross-sectional study carried out in the city of Mangalore, a rapidly developing city in southern India. Methods and Material: All the practicing pediatricians were included in the study and an interview was done on prior appointment using pretested interview schedule in March 2012, after obtaining clearance from the institutional ethics committee. Data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 11.5. Results: Among the 54 practicing pediatricians in Mangalore, 42 were included in this study after exclusion criteria were applied. Among them, 71.4% were following the National Immunization Schedule, 5% did not prefer to give combination vaccines, 17% reported vaccine failure at least once in their practice, and 85.7% motivated the parents for future doses. Distance to the clinic and affordability were the major reasons for loss of follow-up. Only 38.1% used auto-disabled syringes, 11.9% did not observe the children following the immunization, and 45.2% did not use color coding for disposal of injection-related wastes. Mechanical hub cutters were preferred by 41% of the respondents. Conclusion: The study showed the diversity in immunization practices. The National Immunization Schedule is the most commonly followed schedule. However, the safety of the injection practices was limited.
