Search

Large language models (LLMs) can be used to analyze cyber threat intelligence (CTI) data from cybercrime forums, which contain extensive information and key discussions about emerging cyber threats. However, to date, the level of accuracy and efficiency of LLMs for such critical tasks has yet to be thoroughly evaluated. Hence, this study assesses the performance of an LLM system built on the OpenAI GPT-3.5-turbo model [8] to extract CTI information. To do so, a random sample of more than 700 daily conversations from three cybercrime forums - XSS, Exploit_in, and RAMP - was extracted, and the LLM system was instructed to summarize the conversations and predict 10 key CTI variables, such as whether a large organization and/or a critical infrastructure is being targeted, with only simple human-language instructions. Then, two coders reviewed each conversation and evaluated whether the information extracted by the LLM was accurate. The LLM system performed well, with an average accuracy score of 96.23%, an average precision of 90% and an average recall of 88.2%. Various ways to enhance the model were uncovered, such as the need to help the LLM distinguish between stories and past events, as well as being careful with verb tenses in prompts. Nevertheless, the results of this study highlight the relevance of using LLMs for cyber threat intelligence.

I study the two-dimensional defects of the $d$ dimensional critical $O(N)$ model and the defect RG flows between them. By combining the $\epsilon$-expansion around $d = 4$ and $d = 6$ as well as large $N$ techniques, I find new conformal defects and examine their behavior across dimensions and at various $N$. I discuss how some of these fixed points relate to the known ordinary, special and extraordinary transitions in the 3d theory, as well as examine the presence of new symmetry breaking fixed points preserving an $O(p) \times O(N-p)$ subgroup of $O(N)$ for $N \le N_c$ (with the estimate $N_c = 6$). I characterise these fixed points by obtaining their conformal anomaly coefficients, their 1-point functions and comment on the calculation of their string potential. In Weyl semimetals with broken inversion and time-reversal symmetries, the Maxwell equations are modified by the presence of the axion terms $\mathbf{b} $ and $b_{0}$ where, in the simplest case of a two-node Weyl semimetal, $% 2\hslash \mathbf{b}$ is the vector that connects two Weyl nodes in momentum space and $2\hslash b_{0}$ is the separation in energy of the two Dirac points of these nodes. These axion terms modify the behavior of electromagnetic waves inside a Weyl semimetal leading to a number of unique optical properties such as non-reciprocal propagation, circular and linear dichroism, birefringence and Faraday and Kerr rotations in the absence of a magnetic field. These effects can be used to design optical devices that act as broadband chiral filters, circular polarizers or tunable optical isolators. In this paper, we study in detail how the Faraday and Kerr rotations as well as the transmission and reflection of light incident on a slab of Weyl semimetal can be controlled by varying the different parameters characterizing the Weyl semimetal such as the axion terms, the Fermi level and Fermi velocity, the background dielectric constant, the scattering time for intraband scattering, the width of the semimetal and the dielectric constant of the dielectrics on each side of the semimetal slab. Deep learning-based multivariate and multistep-ahead traffic forecasting models are typically trained with the mean squared error (MSE) or mean absolute error (MAE) as the loss function in a sequence-to-sequence setting, simply assuming that the errors follow an independent and isotropic Gaussian or Laplacian distributions. However, such assumptions are often unrealistic for real-world traffic forecasting tasks, where the probabilistic distribution of spatiotemporal forecasting is very complex with strong concurrent correlations across both sensors and forecasting horizons in a time-varying manner. In this paper, we model the time-varying distribution for the matrix-variate error process as a dynamic mixture of zero-mean Gaussian distributions. To achieve efficiency, flexibility, and scalability, we parameterize each mixture component using a matrix normal distribution and allow the mixture weight to change and be predictable over time. The proposed method can be seamlessly integrated into existing deep-learning frameworks with only a few additional parameters to be learned. We evaluate the performance of the proposed method on a traffic speed forecasting task and find that our method not only improves model performance but also provides interpretable spatiotemporal correlation structures., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, 2 table

We present two complementary approaches to calculating the 2-point function of stress tensors in the presence of a 1/2 BPS surface defect of the 6d $\mathcal{N} = (2,0)$ theories. First, we use analytical bootstrap techniques at large $N$ to obtain the first nontrivial correction to this correlator, from which we extract the defect CFT (dCFT) data characterising the 2d dCFT of the 1/2 BPS plane. Along the way we derive a supersymmetric inversion formula, obtain the relevant superconformal blocks and check that crossing symmetry is satisfied. Notably our result features a holomorphic function whose appearance is related to the chiral algebra construction of Beem, Rastelli and van Rees. Second, we use that chiral algebra description to obtain exact results for the BPS sector of the dCFT, valid at any $N$ and for any choice of surface operator. We present here a careful study of the holographic duals of BPS surface operators in the 6d ${\cal N}=(2,0)$ theory. Several different classes of surface operators have been recently identified and each class has a specific calibration form - a 3-form in $AdS_7\times S^4$ whose pullback to the M2-brane world-volume is equal to the volume form. In all but one class, the appropriate forms are closed, so the action of the M2-brane is easily expressed in terms of boundary data, which is the geometry of the surface. Specifically, for surfaces of vanishing anomaly, it is proportional to the integral of the square of the extrinsic curvature. This can be extended to the case of surfaces with anomalies, by taking the ratio of two surfaces with the same anomaly. This gives a slew of new expectation values at large $N$ in this theory. For one specific class of surface operators, which are Lagrangian submanifolds of ${\mathbb R}^4\subset {\mathbb R}^6$, the structure is far richer and we find that the M2-branes are special Lagrangian submanifold of an appropriate six-dimensional almost Calabi-Yau submanifold of $AdS_7\times S^4$. The topological nature of the band structure of a Weyl semimetal leads to a number of unique transport and optical properties. For example, the description of the propagation of an electromagnetic wave in a Weyl semimetal with broken time-reversal and inversion symmetry, for example, requires a modification of the Maxwell equations by the axion field $\theta \left( \mathbf{r},t\right) =2\mathbf{b}\cdot \mathbf{r}-2b_{0}t,$ where $2% \mathbf{b}$ is the separation in wave vector space between two Weyl nodes of opposite chiralities and $2\hslash b_{0}$ is their separation in energy. In this paper, we study theoretically how the axion terms $b_{0}$ and $\bf{b}$ modify the frequency behavior of the Kerr rotation and ellipticity angles $\theta_{K}\left( \omega \right) $ and $\psi_{K}\left( \omega \right) $ in a Weyl semimetal. Both the Faraday and Voigt configurations are considered since they provide different information on the electronic transitions and plasmon excitation. We derive the Kerr angles firstly without an external magnetic field where the rotation of the polarization is only due to the axion terms and secondly in a strong magnetic field where these terms compete with the gyration effect of the magnetic field. In this latter case, we concentrate on the ultra-quantum limit where the Fermi level lies in the chiral Landau level and the Kerr and ellipticity angles have more complex frequency and magnetic field behaviors., Comment: 21 pages with 14 PDF figures

Modeling the relationship between vehicle speed and density on the road is a fundamental problem in traffic flow theory. Recent research found that using the least-squares (LS) method to calibrate single-regime speed-density models is biased because of the uneven distribution of samples. This paper explains the issue of the LS method from a statistical perspective: the biased calibration is caused by the correlations/dependencies in regression residuals. Based on this explanation, we propose a new calibration method for single-regime speed-density models by modeling the covariance of residuals via a zero-mean Gaussian Process (GP). Our approach can be viewed as a generalized least-squares (GLS) method with a specific covariance structure (i.e., kernel function) and is a generalization of the existing LS and the weighted least-squares (WLS) methods. Next, we use a sparse approximation to address the scalability issue of GPs and apply a Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) sampling scheme to obtain the posterior distributions of the parameters for speed-density models and the hyperparameters (i.e., length scale and variance) of the GP kernel. Finally, we calibrate six well-known single-regime speed-density models with the proposed method. Results show that the proposed GP-based methods (1) significantly reduce the biases in the LS calibration, (2) achieve a similar effect as the WLS method, (3) can be used as a non-parametric speed-density model, and (4) provide a Bayesian solution to estimate posterior distributions of parameters and speed-density functions.

Accurate forecasting of bus travel time and its uncertainty is critical to service quality and operation of transit systems; for example, it can help passengers make better decisions on departure time, route choice, and even transport mode choice and also support transit operators to make informed decisions on tasks such as crew/vehicle scheduling and timetabling. However, most existing approaches in bus travel time forecasting are based on deterministic models that provide only point estimation. To this end, we develop in this paper a Bayesian probabilistic forecasting model for bus travel time. To characterize the strong dependencies/interactions between consecutive buses, we concatenate the link travel time vectors and the headway vector from a pair of two adjacent buses as a new augmented variable and model it with a constrained Multivariate Gaussian mixture distributions. This approach can naturally capture the interactions between adjacent buses (e.g., correlated speed and smooth variation of headway), handle missing values in data, and depict the multimodality in bus travel time distributions. Next, we assume different periods in a day share the same set of Gaussian components but different mixing coefficients to characterize the systematic temporal variations in bus operation. For model inference, we develop an efficient Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) sampling algorithm to obtain the posterior distributions of model parameters and make probabilistic forecasting. We test the proposed model using the data from a twenty-link bus route in Guangzhou, China. Results show our approach significantly outperforms baseline models that overlook bus-to-bus interactions in terms of both predictive means and distributions. Besides forecasting, the parameters of the proposed model contain rich information for understanding/improving the bus service.

The crease is a surface operator folded by a finite angle along an infinite line. Several realisations of it in the 6d ${\mathcal N}=(2,0)$ theory are studied here. It plays a role similar to the generalised quark-antiquark potential, or the cusp anomalous dimension, in gauge theories. We identify a finite quantity that can be studied despite the conformal anomalies ubiquitous with surface operators and evaluate it in free field theory and in the holographic dual. We also find a subtle difference between the infinite crease and its conformal transform to a compact observable comprised of two glued hemispheres, reminiscent of the circular Wilson loop. We prove by a novel application of defect CFT techniques for the $SO(2,1)$ symmetry along the fold that the near-BPS behaviour of the crease is determined as the derivative of the compact observable with respect to its angle, as in the bremsstrahlung function. Strong nonlinearity of a self-resonant radio frequency superconducting quantum interference device (rf-SQUID) meta-atom is explored via intermodulation (IM) measurements. Previous work in zero dc magnetic flux showed a sharp onset of IM response as the frequency sweeps through the resonance. A second onset at higher frequency was also observed, creating a prominent gap in the IM response. By extending those measurements to nonzero dc flux, new dynamics are revealed, including: dc flux tunabililty of the aforementioned gaps, and enhanced IM response near geometric resonance of the rf-SQUID. These features observed experimentally are understood and analyzed theoretically through a combination of a steady state analytical modeling, and a full numerical treatment of the rf SQUID dynamics. The latter, in addition, predicts the presence of chaos in narrow parameter regimes. We present a family of new M2-brane solutions in $AdS_7\times S^4$ that calculate toroidal BPS surface operators in the $\mathcal{N}=(2,0)$ theory. These observables are conformally invariant and not subject to anomalies so we are able to evaluate their finite expectation values at leading order at large $N$. In the limit of a thin torus we find a cylinder, which is a natural surface generalization of both the circular and parallel lines Wilson loop. Forecasting the short-term ridership among origin-destination pairs (OD matrix) of a metro system is crucial in real-time metro operation. However, this problem is notoriously difficult due to the high-dimensional, sparse, noisy, and skewed nature of OD matrices. This paper proposes a High-order Weighted Dynamic Mode Decomposition (HW-DMD) model for short-term metro OD matrices forecasting. DMD uses Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) to extract low-rank approximation from OD data, and a low-rank high-order vector autoregression model is established for forecasting. To address a practical issue that metro OD matrices cannot be observed in real-time, we use the boarding demand to replace the unavailable OD matrices. Particularly, we consider the time-evolving feature of metro systems and improve the forecast by exponentially reducing the weights for old data. Moreover, we develop a tailored online update algorithm for HW-DMD to update the model coefficients daily without storing historical data or retraining. Experiments on data from a large-scale metro system show the proposed HW-DMD is robust to the noisy and sparse data and significantly outperforms baseline models in forecasting both OD matrices and boarding flow. We study possible geometries and R-symmetry breaking patterns that lead to globally BPS surface operators in the six dimensional $\mathcal{N}=(2,0)$ theory. We find four main classes of solutions in different subspaces of $\mathbb{R}^6$ and a multitude of subclasses and specific examples. We prove that these constructions lead to supersymmety preserving observables and count the number of preserved supercharges. We discuss the underlying geometry, calculate their anomalies and present analogous structures for the holographic dual M2-branes in $AdS_7\times S^4$. We also comment on the dimensional reduction of these observables to line and surface operators in 4d and 5d theories. Surface operators are among the most important observables of the 6d $\mathcal{N} = (2,0)$ theory. Here we apply the tools of defect CFT to study local operator insertions into the 1/2-BPS plane. We first relate the 2-point function of the displacement operator to the expectation value of the bulk stress tensor and translate this relation into a constraint on the anomaly coefficients associated with the defect. Secondly, we study the defect operator expansion of the stress tensor multiplet and identify several new operators of the defect CFT. One of the major goals of transport operators is to adapt the transport supply scheduling to the passenger demand for existing transport networks during each specific period. Another problem mentioned by operators is accurately estimating the demand for disposable ticket or pass to adapt ticket availability to passenger demand. In this context, we propose generic data shaping, allowing the use of well-known regression models (basic, statistical and machine learning models) for the long-term forecasting of passenger demand with fine-grained temporal resolution. Specifically, this paper investigates the forecasting until one year ahead of the number of passengers entering each station of a transport network with a quarter-hour aggregation by taking planned events into account (e.g., concerts, shows, and so forth). To compare the models and the quality of the prediction, we use a real smart card and event data set from the city of Montr\'eal, Canada, that span a three-year period with two years for training and one year for testing., Comment: 18 pages, 13 figures, 7 tables

Accurate forecasting of passenger flow (i.e., ridership) is critical to the operation of urban metro systems. Previous studies mainly model passenger flow as time series by aggregating individual trips and then perform forecasting based on the values in the past several steps. However, this approach essentially overlooks the fact that passenger flow consists of trips from each individual traveler. For example, a traveler's work trip in the morning can help predict his/her home trip in the evening, while this causal structure cannot be explicitly encoded in standard time series models. In this paper, we propose a new forecasting framework for boarding flow by incorporating the generative mechanism into standard time series models and leveraging the strong regularity rooted in travel behavior. In doing so, we introduce returning flow from previous alighting trips as a new covariate, which captures the causal structure and long-range dependencies in passenger flow data based on travel behavior. We develop the return probability parallelogram (RPP) to summarize the causal relationships and estimate the return flow. The proposed framework is evaluated using real-world passenger flow data, and the results confirm that the returning flow -- a single covariate -- can substantially and consistently improve various forecasting tasks, including one-step ahead forecasting, multi-step ahead forecasting, and forecasting under special events. And the proposed method is more effective for business-type stations with most passengers come and return within the same day. This study can be extended to other modes of transport, and it also sheds new light on general demand time series forecasting problems, in which causal structure and long-range dependencies are generated by the user behavior.

The 6d $\mathcal{N}=(2,0)$ theory has natural surface operator observables, which are akin in many ways to Wilson loops in gauge theories. We propose a definition of a "locally BPS" surface operator and study its conformal anomalies, the analog of the conformal dimension of local operators. We study the abelian theory and the holographic dual of the large $N$ theory refining previously used techniques. Introducing non-constant couplings to the scalar fields allows for an extra anomaly coefficient, which we find in both cases to be related to one of the geometrical anomaly coefficients, suggesting a general relation due to supersymmetry. In its first 2 years of operation, the ground-based Terrestrial gamma ray flash and Energetic Thunderstorm Rooftop Array(TETRA)-II array of gamma ray detectors has recorded 22 bursts of gamma rays of millisecond-scale duration associated with lightning. In this study, we present the TETRA-II observations detected at the three TETRA-II ground-level sites in Louisiana, Puerto Rico, and Panama together with the simultaneous radio frequency signals from the VAISALA Global Lightning Data set, VAISALA National Lightning Detection Network, Earth Networks Total Lightning Network, and World Wide Lightning Location Network. The relative timing between the gamma ray events and the lightning activity is a key parameter for understanding the production mechanism(s) of the bursts. The gamma ray time profiles and their correlation with radio sferics suggest that the gamma ray events are initiated by lightning leader activity and are produced near the last stage of lightning leader channel development prior to the lightning return stroke., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures

We demonstrate a low-dissipation dielectric metamaterial with tunable properties based on the Josephson effect. Superconducting wires loaded with regularly spaced Josephson junctions ($I_c \approx 0.25$ $\mu$A) spanning a K-band waveguide and aligned with the microwave electric fields create a superconducting dielectric metamaterial. Applied dc current tunes the cutoff frequency and effective permittivity of this unique electric metamaterial. Let $N_\lambda$ and $U$ be two independent random variables respectively distributed as a Poisson distribution with parameter $\lambda >0$ and a uniform distribution on $(0,1)$. This paper establishes that the median, say $M$, of $N_\lambda+U$ is close to $\lambda +1/3$ and more precisely that $M-\lambda-1/3=o(\lambda^{-1})$ as $\lambda\to \infty$. This result is used to construt a very simple robust estimator of $\lambda$ which is consistent and asymptotically normal. Compared to known robust estimates, this one can still be used with large datasets ($n\simeq 10^9$).

The Clustered Traveling Salesman Problem with a Prespecified Order on the Clusters, a variant of the well-known traveling salesman problem is studied in literature. In this problem, delivery locations are divided into clusters with different urgency levels and more urgent locations must be visited before less urgent ones. However, this could lead to an inefficient route in terms of traveling cost. This priority-oriented constraint can be relaxed by a rule called d-relaxed priority that provides a trade-off between transportation cost and emergency level. Our research proposes two approaches to solve the problem with d-relaxed priority rule. We improve the mathematical formulation proposed in the literature to construct an exact solution method. A meta-heuristic method based on the framework of Iterated Local Search with problem-tailored operators is also introduced to find approximate solutions. Experimental results show the effectiveness of our methods.

We present constraints on the annihilation cross section of WIMP dark matter based on the joint statistical analysis of four dwarf galaxies with VERITAS. These results are derived from an optimized photon weighting statistical technique that improves on standard imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescope (IACT) analyses by utilizing the spectral and spatial properties of individual photon events. We report on the results of $\sim$230 hours of observations of five dwarf galaxies and the joint statistical analysis of four of the dwarf galaxies. We find no evidence of gamma-ray emission from any individual dwarf nor in the joint analysis. The derived upper limit on the dark matter annihilation cross section from the joint analysis is $1.35\times 10^{-23} {\mathrm{ cm^3s^{-1}}}$ at 1 TeV for the bottom quark ($b\bar{b}$) final state, $2.85\times 10^{-24}{\mathrm{ cm^3s^{-1}}}$ at 1 TeV for the tau lepton ($\tau^{+}\tau^{-}$) final state and $1.32\times 10^{-25}{\mathrm{ cm^3s^{-1}}}$ at 1 TeV for the gauge boson ($\gamma\gamma$) final state., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures, published in PRD, Ascii tables containing annihilation cross sections limits are available for download as ancillary files with readme.txt file description of limits

Imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs) are equipped with sensitive photomultiplier tube (PMT) cameras. Exposure to high levels of background illumination degrades the efficiency of and potentially destroys these photo-detectors over time, so IACTs cannot be operated in the same configuration in the presence of bright moonlight as under dark skies. Since September 2012, observations have been carried out with the VERITAS IACTs under bright moonlight (defined as about three times the night-sky-background (NSB) of a dark extragalactic field, typically occurring when Moon illumination > 35%) in two observing modes, firstly by reducing the voltage applied to the PMTs and, secondly, with the addition of ultra-violet (UV) bandpass filters to the cameras. This has allowed observations at up to about 30 times previous NSB levels (around 80% Moon illumination), resulting in 30% more observing time between the two modes over the course of a year. These additional observations have already allowed for the detection of a flare from the 1ES 1727+502 and for an observing program targeting a measurement of the cosmic-ray positron fraction. We provide details of these new observing modes and their performance relative to the standard VERITAS observations.

Through experiments and numerical simulations we explore the behavior of rf SQUID (radio frequency superconducting quantum interference device) metamaterials, which show extreme tunability and nonlinearity. The emergent electromagnetic properties of this metamaterial are sensitive to the degree of coherent response of the driven interacting SQUIDs. Coherence suffers in the presence of disorder, which is experimentally found to be mainly due to a dc flux gradient. We demonstrate methods to recover the coherence, specifically by varying the coupling between the SQUID meta-atoms and increasing the temperature or the amplitude of the applied rf flux., Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures

On February 17 2016, the IceCube real-time neutrino search identified, for the first time, three muon neutrino candidates arriving within 100 s of one another, consistent with coming from the same point in the sky. Such a triplet is expected once every 13.7 years as a random coincidence of background events. However, considering the lifetime of the follow-up program the probability of detecting at least one triplet from atmospheric background is 32%. Follow-up observatories were notified in order to search for an electromagnetic counterpart. Observations were obtained by Swift's X-ray telescope, by ASAS-SN, LCO and MASTER at optical wavelengths, and by VERITAS in the very-high-energy gamma-ray regime. Moreover, the Swift BAT serendipitously observed the location 100 s after the first neutrino was detected, and data from the Fermi LAT and HAWC observatory were analyzed. We present details of the neutrino triplet and the follow-up observations. No likely electromagnetic counterpart was detected, and we discuss the implications of these constraints on candidate neutrino sources such as gamma-ray bursts, core-collapse supernovae and active galactic nucleus flares. High-energy gamma-ray emission from supernova remnants (SNRs) has provided a unique perspective for studies of Galactic cosmic-ray acceleration. Tycho's SNR is a particularly good target because it is a young, type Ia SNR that is well-studied over a wide range of energies and located in a relatively clean environment. Since the detection of gamma-ray emission from Tycho's SNR by VERITAS and Fermi-LAT, there have been several theoretical models proposed to explain its broadband emission and high-energy morphology. We report on an update to the gamma-ray measurements of Tycho's SNR with 147 hours of VERITAS and 84 months of Fermi-LAT observations, which represents about a factor of two increase in exposure over previously published data. About half of the VERITAS data benefited from a camera upgrade, which has made it possible to extend the TeV measurements toward lower energies. The TeV spectral index measured by VERITAS is consistent with previous results, but the expanded energy range softens a straight power-law fit. At energies higher than 400 GeV, the power-law index is $2.92 \pm 0.42_{\mathrm{stat}} \pm 0.20_{\mathrm{sys}}$. It is also softer than the spectral index in the GeV energy range, $2.14 \pm 0.09_{\mathrm{stat}} \pm 0.02_{\mathrm{sys}}$, measured by this study using Fermi--LAT data. The centroid position of the gamma-ray emission is coincident with the center of the remnant, as well as with the centroid measurement of Fermi--LAT above 1 GeV. The results are consistent with an SNR shell origin of the emission, as many models assume. The response of nonlinear metamaterials and superconducting electronics to two-tone excitation is critical for understanding their use as low-noise amplifiers and tunable filters. A new setting for such studies is that of metamaterials made of radio frequency superconducting quantum interference devices (rf-SQUIDs). The two-tone response of self-resonant rf-SQUID meta-atoms and metamaterials is studied here via intermodulation (IM) measurement over a broad range of tone frequencies and tone powers. A sharp onset followed by a surprising strongly suppressed IM region near the resonance is observed. Using a two time scale analysis technique, we present an analytical theory that successfully explains our experimental observations. The theory predicts that the IM can be manipulated with tone power, center frequency, frequency difference between the two tones, and temperature. This quantitative understanding potentially allows for the design of rf-SQUID metamaterials with either very low or very high IM response., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures

Consistency of the unconventional view of de Sitter space as a quantum theory of gravity with a finite number of degrees of freedom requires that Coleman-De Luccia tunneling rates to vacua with negative cosmological constant should be interpreted as recurrences to low-entropy states. This demand translates into two constraints, or consistency conditions, on the scalar potential which are generically: 1) the distance in field space between the de Sitter vacuum and any other vacuum with negative cosmological constant must be of the order of the reduced Planck mass or larger and 2) the fourth root of the vacuum energy density of the de Sitter vacuum must be smaller than the fourth root of the typical scale of the scalar potential. These consistency conditions shed a different light on both outstanding hierarchy problems of the Standard Model of particle physics: the scale of electroweak symmetry breaking and the scale of the cosmological constant. Narrow-band invisibility in an otherwise opaque medium has been achieved by electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in atomic systems. The quantum EIT behaviour can be classically mimicked by specially engineered metamaterials via carefully controlled interference with a "dark mode". However, the narrow transparency window limits the potential applications that require a tunable wide-band transparent performance. Here, we present a macroscopic quantum superconducting metamaterial with manipulative self-induced broadband transparency due to a qualitatively novel nonlinear mechanism that is different from conventional EIT or its classical analogs. A near complete disappearance of resonant absorption under a range of applied rf flux is observed experimentally and explained theoretically. The transparency comes from the intrinsic bi-stability and can be tuned on/ off easily by altering rf and dc magnetic fields, temperature and history. Hysteretic in situ 100% tunability of transparency paves the way for auto-cloaking metamaterials, intensity dependent filters, and fast-tunable power limiters.

We have prepared meta-atoms based on radio frequency superconducting quantum interference devices (RF SQUIDs) and examined their tunability with dc magnetic field, rf current, and temperature. RF SQUIDs are superconducting split ring resonators in which the usual capacitance is supplemented with a Josephson junction, which introduces strong nonlinearity in the rf properties. We find excellent agreement between the data and a model which regards the Josephson junction as the resistively and capacitively-shunted junction. A magnetic field tunability of 80 THz/Gauss at 12 GHz is observed, a total tunability of 56$%$ is achieved, and a unique electromagnetically-induced transparency feature at intermediate excitation powers is demonstrated for the first time. An RF SQUID metamaterial is shown to have qualitatively the same behavior as a single RF SQUID with regards to DC flux and temperature tuning., Comment: submitted to Phys. Rev.
