Abstract

Silicon Drift Detectors, widely employed in high-resolution and high-rate X-ray applications, are considered here with interest also for electron detection. The accurate measurement of the tritium beta decay is the core of the TRISTAN (TRitium Investigation on STerile to Active Neutrino mixing) project. This work presents the characterization of a single-pixel SDD detector with a mono-energetic electron beam obtained from a Scanning Electron Microscope. The suitability of the SDD to detect electrons, in the energy range spanning from few keV to tens of keV, is demonstrated. Experimental measurements reveal a strong effect of the detector's entrance window structure on the observed energy response. A detailed detector model is therefore necessary to reconstruct the spectrum of an unknown beta-decay source.

Abstract

The KATRIN (Karlsruhe Tritium Neutrino) experiment investigates the energetic endpoint of the tritium beta-decay spectrum to determine the effective mass of the electron anti-neutrino. The collaboration has reported a first mass measurement result at this TAUP-2019 conference. The TRISTAN project aims at detecting a keV-sterile neutrino signature by measuring the entire tritium beta-decay spectrum with an upgraded KATRIN system. One of the greatest challenges is to handle the high signal rates generated by the strong activity of the KATRIN tritium source while maintaining a good energy resolution. Therefore, a novel multi-pixel silicon drift detector and read-out system are being designed to handle rates of about 100 Mcps with an energy resolution better than 300 eV (FWHM). This report presents succinctly the KATRIN experiment, the TRISTAN project, then the results of the first 7-pixels prototype measurement campaign and finally describes the construction of the first TRISTAN module composed of 166 SDD-pixels as well as its implementation in KATRIN experiment.

Abstract

Electron spectrometry is traditionally challenging due to the difficulty of correctly reconstructing the original energy of the detected electrons. Silicon Drift Detectors, extensively used for X-ray spectrometry, are a promising technology for the precise measurement of electrons energy. The ability to correctly model the detector entrance window response to the energy deposited by electrons is a critical aspect of this application. Abstract

This project is focused on the development of a novel strategy for the precise measurement of beta decay energy spectra. The exact determination of beta spectra has wide implications in the particle and nuclear physics fields: from sterile neutrino searches \cite{Adhikari 2016} to validation of nuclear models of interest for double beta decay searches \cite{Suhonen 2017}, to reactor neutrino experiments. The experimental strategy is focused on the mitigation of the systematic uncertainty in the determination of the spectral shape related to the energy response of the detector. The plan is to use Silicon Drift Detectors (SDDs), exploiting their excellent energy resolution and response uniformity, the thin dead layer and the fast signal that allows high rate operations. A complete modeling of SDDs response to the interaction of beta particles via numerical simulations, validated with dedicated measurements, aims at identifying and canceling the detector-related systematics. Similar attention will be devoted to the integration of beta radioactive sources that preserve the energy information carried by the emitted electrons, and to a veto system with a full solid angle coverage to intercept any escaping particle potentially carrying a fraction of the original electron energy.

Abstract

This document summarizes the conclusions of the Neutrino Town Meeting held at CERN in October 2018 to review the neutrino field at large with the aim of defining a strategy for accelerator-based neutrino physics in Europe. The importance of the field across its many complementary components is stressed. Recommendations are presented regarding the accelerator based neutrino physics, pertinent to the European Strategy for Particle Physics. Abstract

The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is the first bolometric experiment searching for neutrinoless double beta decay that has been able to reach the 1-ton scale. The detector consists of an array of 988 TeO 2 crystals arranged in a cylindrical compact structure of 19 towers, each of them made of 52 crystals. The construction of the experiment was completed in August 2016 and the data taking started in spring 2017 after a period of commissioning and tests. In this work we present the neutrinoless double beta decay results of CUORE from examining a total TeO 2 exposure of 86.3 kg yr, characterized by an effective energy resolution of 7.7 keV FWHM and a background in the region of interest of 0.014 counts/(keV kg yr). In this physics run, CUORE placed a lower limit on the decay half-life of neutrinoless double beta decay of 130 Te ≤ 1.3 · 10 25 yr (90% C.L.). Moreover, an analysis of the background of the experiment is presented as well as the measurement of the 130 Te 2vββ decay with a resulting half-life of T 2v1/2 = [7.9 ± 0.1 (stat.) ± 0.2 (syst.)] x 10 20 yr which is the most precise measurement of the half-life and compatible with previous results.

Abstract

Compelling experimental evidences of neutrino oscillations and their implication that neutrinos are massive particles have given neutrinoless double beta decay a central role in astroparticle physics. In fact, the discovery of this elusive decay would be a major breakthrough, unveiling that neutrino and antineutrino are the same particle and that the lepton number is not conserved. It would also impact our efforts to establish the absolute neutrino mass scale and, ultimately, understand elementary particle interaction unification. All current experimental programs to search for neutrinoless double beta decay are facing with the technical and financial challenge of increasing the experimental mass while maintaining incredibly low levels of spurious background. The new concept described in this paper could be the answer which combines all the features of an ideal experiment: energy resolution, low cost mass scalability, isotope choice flexibility and many powerful handles to make the background negligible. The proposed technology is based on the use of arrays of silicon detectors cooled to 120 K to optimize the collection of the scintillation light emitted by ultra-pure crystals. It is shown that with a 54 kg array of natural CaMoO4 scintillation detectors of this type it is possible to yield a competitive sensitivity on the half-life of the neutrinoless double beta decay of 100Mo as high as ~10E24 years in only one year of data taking. The same array made of 40CaMoO4 scintillation detectors (to get rid of the continuous background coming from the two neutrino double beta decay of 48Ca) will instead be capable of achieving the remarkable sensitivity of ~10E25 years on the half-life of 100Mo neutrinoless double beta decay in only one year of measurement., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures. Abstract

Precision electron spectrometry in the keV range has always been considered a challenging task. The reconstruction of the original electron energy from the detected signal is not trivial because multiple effects modify the kinetic energy of the electron along its path. If not correctly accounted for, these effects can spoil and bias the reconstructed energy with a dramatic reduction of accuracy and precision. In this paper we address one of the most critical aspects of electron spectrometry: the generally unknown effect of the detector entrance window. We show that, with a MonteCarlo-based approach, we are able to build a model of the entrance window accurate enough to reduce the negative effects due to its existence. We adopt for this purpose Silicon Drift Detectors that, thought primarily used for X-ray spectrometry, appear a promising device for electron spectrometry. The technique we discuss exploits characterization and validation measurements performed with electron beams from a Scanning Electron Microscope, later reconstructed with a GEANT4 MonteCarlo simulation.

© Copyright owned by the author(s). CUORE is a ton-scale experiment approaching the data taking phase in Gran Sasso National Laboratory. Its primary goal is to search for the neutrinoless double-beta decay in 130 Te using 988 crystals of tellurim dioxide. The crystals are operated as bolometers at about 10 mK taking advantage of one of the largest dilution cryostat ever built. Concluded in March 2016, the cryostat commissioning consisted in a sequence of cool down runs each one integrating new parts of the apparatus. The last run was performed with the fully configured cryostat and the thermal load at 4 K reached the impressive mass of about 14 tons. During that run the base temperature of 6.3 mK was reached and maintained for more than 70 days. An array of 8 crystals, called mini-tower, was used to check bolometers operation, readout electronics and DAQ. Results will be presented in terms of cooling power, electronic noise, energy resolution and preliminary background measurements.

Abstract

The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is the first bolometric experiment searching for neutrinoless double beta decay that has been able to reach the 1-ton scale. The detector consists of an array of 988 TeO[subscript 2] crystals arranged in a cylindrical compact structure of 19 towers, each of them made of 52 crystals. The construction of the experiment was completed in August 2016 and the data taking started in spring 2017 after a period of commissioning and tests. In this work we present the neutrinoless double beta decay results of CUORE from examining a total TeO[subscript 2] exposure of 86.3kgyr , characterized by an effective energy resolution of 7.7 keV FWHM and a background in the region of interest of 0.014 counts/(keVkgyr) . In this physics run, CUORE placed a lower limit on the decay half-life of neutrinoless double beta decay of 130Te>1.3⋅1025 yr (90% C.L.). Moreover, an analysis of the background of the experiment is presented as well as the measurement of the 130 Te 2 νββ decay with a resulting half-life of T2ν1/2=[7.9±0.1(stat.)±0.2(syst.)]×1020 yr which is the most precise measurement of the half-life and compatible with previous results. ©2019 Keywords: neutrinoless double beta decay; CUORE; Majorana Neutrino, National Science Foundation (grant nos. Abstract

The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is the first bolometric experiment searching for neutrinoless double beta decay that has been able to reach the 1-ton scale. The detector consists of an array of 988 TeO2 crystals arranged in a cylindrical compact structure of 19 towers, each of them made of 52 crystals. The construction of the experiment was completed in August 2016 and the data taking started in spring 2017 after a period of commissioning and tests. In this work we present the neutrinoless double beta decay results of CUORE from examining a total TeO2 exposure of 86.3kg yr, characterized by an effective energy resolution of 7.7 keV FWHM and a background in the region of interest of 0.014 counts/ (keV kg yr). In this physics run, CUORE placed a lower limit on the decay half- life of neutrinoless double beta decay of 130Te > 1.3.1025 yr (90% C. L.). Moreover, an analysis of the background of the experiment is presented as well as the measurement of the 130Te 2vo3p decay with a resulting half- life of T2 2. [7.9 :- 0.1 (stat.) :- 0.2 (syst.)] x 10(20) yr which is the most precise measurement of the half- life and compatible with previous results

Abstract

CUPID-0 is the first large array of scintillating Zn82Se cryogenic calorimeters (bolometers) implementing particle identification for the search of the neutrinoless double beta decay (0). The detector consists of 24 enriched Zn82Se bolometers for a total 82Se mass of 5.28 kg and it has been taking data in the underground LNGS (Italy) since March 2017. In this article we show how the dual read-out provides a powerful tool for the particles rejection. The simultaneous use of the heat and light information allows us to reduce the background down to (3.2-1.1+1.3)x10-3counts/(keV kg year), an unprecedented level for cryogenic calorimeters. In a total exposure of 5.46 kg year Zn82Se we set the most stringent limit on the 0 decay 82Se half-life T1/20>4.0x1024 year at 90% C.I

Abstract

CUPID-0 is the first large mass experiment based on cryogenic calorimeters (bolometers) that implements the dual read-out of light and heat for background rejection. The detector, consisting of 24 enriched Zn82Se crystals (5.28 kg of 82Se), is taking data in the underground LNGS (Italy) from March 2017. In this contribution we present the analysis that allowed to set the most stringent limit on the half-life of neutrino-less double beta decay of 82Se. We prove that the particle identification, enabled by the simultaneous read-out of heat and light, provides an unprecedented background level for cryogenic calorimeters of few 103 counts/keV/kg/y. Finally, we discuss the impact of these results on next generation projects.

Abstract

The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is the first bolometric experiment searching for neutrinoless double beta decay that has been able to reach the 1-ton scale. The detector consists of an array of 988 TeO 2 emantics> crystals arranged in a cylindrical compact structure of 19 towers, each of them made of 52 crystals. The construction of the experiment was completed in August 2016 and the data taking started in spring 2017 after a period of commissioning and tests. In this work we present the neutrinoless double beta decay results of CUORE from examining a total TeO 2 emantics> exposure of 86.3 kg yr emantics> , characterized by an effective energy resolution of 7.7 keV FWHM and a background in the region of interest of 0.014 emantics> counts / ( keV kg yr ) emantics> . In this physics run, CUORE placed a lower limit on the decay half-life of neutrinoless double beta decay of 130 Te > 1.3 · 10 25 emantics> yr (90% C.L.). The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is designed to search for neutrinoless double beta decay of 130Te with an array of 988 TeO2 bolometers operating at temperatures around 10 mK. The experiment is currently being commissioned in Hall A of Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso, Italy. The goal of CUORE is to reach a 90% C.L. exclusion sensitivity on the 130Te decay half-life of 9 × 1025 years after 5 years of data taking. The main issue to be addressed to accomplish this aim is the rate of background events in the region of interest, which must not be higher than 10- 2 counts/keV/kg/year. We developed a detailed Monte Carlo simulation, based on results from a campaign of material screening, radioassays, and bolometric measurements, to evaluate the expected background. This was used over the years to guide the construction strategies of the experiment and we use it here to project a background model for CUORE. In this paper we report the results of our study and our expectations for the background rate in the energy region where the peak signature of neutrinoless double beta decay of 130Te is expected.

30. Search for double-beta decay of 130Te to the excited states of 130Xe in CUORE-0

Abstract

CUORE-0 è stato un esperimento bolometrico, mantenuto in funzione dal 2013 al 2015, il cui scopo scientifico principale è stata la ricerca del decadimento doppio beta senza emissione di neutrini (0vbb) nel 130Te. Il rivelatore era costituito da 52 cristalli di TeO2, usati sia come rivelatore che come sorgente dell'isotopo di interesse. I cristalli erano organizzati in una singola torre e contenuti in un criostato capace di raggiungere la temperatura di 10 mK. Grazie al basso fondo radioattivo raggiunto dall'esperimento, la ricerca di altri processi rari, oltre al decadimento doppio beta senza emissione di neutrini, è stata possibile. In questa tesi descrivo i metodi che ho usato per la ricerca del decadimento doppio beta del 130Te sugli stati eccitati del 130Xe. Questo decadimento è caratterizzato dall'emissione di due elettroni, seguiti da una cascata di fotoni, dandogli una segnatura chiaramente identificabile. Ho studiato due processi distinti, il decadimento con l'emissione di due neutrino, permesso dal Modello Standard, e il decadimento senza emissione di neutrini. Per poter identificare chiaramente la segnatura di questi decadimenti è stato necessario ottimizzare una procedura di analisi dedicata, che ha richiesto l'uso sia di dati reali che simulati. I due decadimenti non sono stati osservati in CUORE-0, ma è stato possibile dare un limite inferiore al relativo tempo di dimezzamento: per il decadimento senza emissione di neutrini T1/2 > 5.44x10^23 anni, mentre per il decadimento con l'emissione di due neutrini T1/2 > 1.85x10^23 anni. In particolare, il risultato per il canale con l'emissione di due neutrini rappresenta un netto miglioramento rispetto al limite preesistente, determinato dall'esperimento Cuoricino e pari a 1.30x10^23 anni. La combinazione dei risultati di CUORE-0 e Cuoricino permette di raggiungere limiti ancora migliori: T1/2 > 1.48x10^24 anni per il decadimento senza neutrini e T1/2 > 2.19x10^23 anni per il decadimento con due neutrini., CUORE-0 was a bolometric experiment, operated between 2013 and 2015, whose main scientific goal was the search for neutrinoless double-beta decay (0vbb) in 130Te. The detector consisted of 52 TeO2 crystals, used both as a detector and a source for the isotope under investigation. The crystals were arranged in a single tower and contained in a cryostat capable of reaching the temperature of 10 mK. Thanks to the low background of the experiment, searches for rare events other than 0vbb are possible. In this thesis I describe the methods used to search for double-beta decay of 130Te on the excited states of 130Xe. This decay is characterized by the emission of two electrons followed by a photon cascade, giving it a very characteristic signature. I studied two distinct processes, the SM-allowed two neutrino double-beta decay and neutrinoless double-beta decay on the excited states. In order to properly detect the signatures of these decays a dedicated optimization of the analysis procedure, involving both real and simulated data, was required. The two decays are not observed in CUORE-0, but a lower limit on the half-life of both processes can be set: for the neutrinoless decay, T1/2 > 5.44x10^23 yr, and for the two neutrino decay T1/2 > 1.85x10^23. The result from the two neutrino channel from CUORE-0 was a clear improvement over the previously existing half-life limit, set by the Cuoricino experiment at 1.30x#10^23 years. The combination of the results from CUORE-0 and Cuoricino yields even better limits: T1/2 > 1.48x10^24 years for the neutrinoless channel and T1/2 > 2.19x10^23 for the two neutrino channel. These results represent the most stringent limits currently available for both processes.

Abstract

We describe in detail the methods used to obtain the lower bound on the lifetime of neutrinoless double-beta (0νββ) decay in Te130 and the associated limit on the effective Majorana mass of the neutrino using the CUORE-0 detector. CUORE-0 is a bolometric detector array located at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso that was designed to validate the background reduction techniques developed for CUORE, a next-generation experiment scheduled to come online in 2016. CUORE-0 is also a competitive 0νββ decay search in its own right and functions as a platform to further develop the analysis tools and procedures to be used in CUORE. These include data collection, event selection and processing, as well as an evaluation of signal efficiency. In particular, we describe the amplitude evaluation, thermal gain stabilization, energy calibration methods, and the analysis event selection used to create our final 0νββ search spectrum. We define our high level analysis procedures, with emphasis on the new insights gained and challenges encountered. We outline in detail our fitting methods near the hypothesized 0νββ decay peak and catalog the main sources of systematic uncertainty. Finally, we derive the 0νββ decay half-life limits previously reported for CUORE-0, T1/20ν>2.7×1024yr, and in combination with the Cuoricino limit, T1/20ν>4.0×1024yr.

Abstract

Physicists have searched for Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay (0vββ) for about a half a century. Developed over the latest 20 years, the bolometric technique is today used by one of the most competitive experimentsin the field: CUORE, a ton-size detector aiming for a sensitivity of ∼1026yr on130Te 0vββ decay half-life. With the final step of its construction nearly completed, CUORE will start its operation by the end of the current year. Meanwhile, the first CUORE-like tower is operated at Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso as an independent 0vββ experiment. Named CUORE-0, it represents the state of the art for large-mass, low-background, ultra-lowtemperature bolometer arrays. Besides being a competitive 0vββ decay search, it has validated the ultraclean assembly techniques and radiopurity of materials for the upcoming CUORE experiment. Abstract

The R&D activity performed during the last years proved the potential of ZnSe scintillating bolometers to the search for neutrino-less double beta decay, motivating the realization of the first large-mass experiment based on this technology: CUPID-0. The isotopic enrichment in82Se, the Zn82Se crystals growth, as well as the light detectors production have been accomplished, and the experiment is now in construction at Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (Italy). In this paper we present the results obtained testing the first three Zn82Se crystals operated as scintillating bolometers, and we prove that their performance in terms of energy resolution, background rejection capability and intrinsic radio-purity complies with the requirements of CUPID-0.

Abstract

Due to their excellent energy resolution values and the vast choice of possible materials, bolometric detectors are currently widely used in the physics of rare events. A limiting aspect for bolometers rises from their inability to discriminate among radiation types or surface from bulk events. It has been demonstrated that the main limitation to sensitivity for purely bolometric detectors is represented by surface alpha contaminations, causing a continuous background that cannot be discriminated. A new scintillation-based technique for the rejection of surface alpha background in non-scintillating bolometric experiments is proposed in this work. The idea is to combine a scintillating and a high sensitivity photon detector with a non-scintillating absorber. We present results showing the possibility to reject events due to alpha decay at or nearby the surface of the crystal.

Abstract

The CUORE-0 experiment searched for neutrinoless double beta decay in130Te using an array of 52 tellurium dioxide crystals, operated as bolometers at a temperature of 10 mK. It took data in the Gran Sasso National Laboratory (Italy) since March 2013 to March 2015. We present the results of a search for neutrinoless double beta decay in 9.8 kg-years130Te exposure that allowed us to set the most stringent limit to date on this half-life. The performance of the detector in terms of background and energy resolution is also reported.

Abstract

Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay (0 nu beta beta) is a rare nuclear transition that if it occurs at all it will be very important for the exploration of the inverted hierarchy region of the neutrino mass pattern. The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is an experiment that aims to search for such a transition in 130 Te together with other rare processes. In the present paper we will describe the basic features of CUORE Experiment, the status of the experiment as well as the latest results obtained from CUORE-0 detector, a smaller scale experiment constructed to test and demonstrate the expected performances of CUORE.

Abstract

The CUORE experiment will search for neutrinoless double-beta decay of 130Te with an array of 988 TeO2 bolometers arranged in 19 towers. CUORE-0, the first tower assembled according to the CUORE procedures, was built and commissioned at Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso, and took data from March 2013 to March 2015. In this paper we describe the design, construction and operation of the CUORE-0 experiment, with an emphasis on the improvements made over a predecessor experiment, Cuoricino. In particular, we demonstrate with CUORE-0 data that the design goals of CUORE are within reach.

Abstract

In the past ten years, neutrino oscillation experiments have provided the incontrovertible evidence that neutrinos mix and have finite masses. These results represent the strongest demonstration that the electroweak Standard Model is incomplete and that new Physics beyond it must exist. In this scenario, a unique role is played by the Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay searches which can probe lepton number conservation and investigate the Dirac/Majorana nature of the neutrinos and their absolute mass scale (hierarchy problem) with unprecedented sensitivity. Today Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay faces a new era where large-scale experiments with a sensitivity approaching the so-called degenerate-hierarchy region are nearly ready to start and where the challenge for the next future is the construction of detectors characterized by a tonne-scale size and an incredibly low background. A number of new proposed projects took up this challenge. These are based either on large expansions of the present experiments or on new ideas to improve the technical performance and/or reduce the background contributions. In this paper, a review of the most relevant ongoing experiments is given. The most relevant parameters contributing to the experimental sensitivity are discussed and a critical comparison of the future projects is proposed.

Abstract

Next generation calorimetric experiments for the search of rare events rely on the detection of tiny amounts of light (of the order of 20 optical photons) to discriminate and reduce background sources and improve sensitivity. Calorimetric detectors are the simplest solution for photon detection at cryogenic (mK) temperatures. The development of silicon based light detectors with enhanced performance thanks to the use of the Neganov–Luke effect is described. The aim of this research line is the production of high performance detectors with industrial-grade reproducibility and reliability.

Abstract

The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is an upcoming experiment designed to search for the neutrinoless double-beta decays. Observation of the process would unambiguously establish that neutrinos are Majorana particles and provide information on their absolute mass scale hierarchy. CUORE is now under construction and will consist of an array of 988 TeO2crystal bolometers operated at 10 mK, but the first tower (CUORE-0) is already taking data. The experimental techniques used will be presented as well as the preliminary CUORE-0 results. The current status of the full-mass experiment and its expected sensitivity will then be discussed.

Abstract

The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is a ton-scale neutrinoless double beta decay experiment based on cryogenic bolometers that is in the final stage of construction at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory (LNGS). CUORE is aimed at observing the neutrinoless double beta decay of 130Te and measuring the corresponding Majorana neutrino mass with a sensitivity close to the so-called inverted mass hierarchy region. CUORE-0 is the demonstrator of CUORE: a single CUORE-like tower, made of 52 TeO2 bolometers for a total mass of 39 kg. CUORE-0 started taking data in spring 2013 at LNGS and reached a total exposure of 9.8 kg y of 130Te. CUORE-0 significantly reduces the background and energy resolution of the previous experiment CUORICINO and sets the most stringent limit to date on neutrinoless double beta decay in 130Te. We will discuss in the following the physics results from CUORE-0 data and the status of the construction of CUORE.

Abstract

The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is a ton-scale experiment made of TeO2 bolometers that will probe the neutrinoless double beta decay of 130Te. Excellent energy resolution, low threshold and low background make CUORE sensitive to nuclear recoils, allowing a search for dark matter interactions. With a total mass of 741 kg of TeO2, CUORE can search for an annual modulation of the counting rate at low energies. We present data obtained with CUORE-like detectors and the prospects for a dark matter search in CUORE-0, a 40-kg prototype, and CUORE.

Abstract

The CUORE-0 experiment, a 52 bolometer array searching for neutrinoless double beta decay from 130Te, has started taking data in spring 2013 underground at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS). The excellent results obtained in terms of energy resolution and background level allowed this experiment to reach the sensitivity of Cuoricino in approximately half the runtime. Combining CUORE-0 data (9.8 kg·yr exposure of 130Te) with the 19.75 kg·yr exposure of the Cuoricino experiment, we obtain the most stringent limit to date on the half-life of this isotope (T1/2 > 4.0 × 1024 yr). In this article, we review the results from CUORE-0 and discuss the status and the physics potential of CUORE, a 19 times larger bolometer array that plans to begin operations by end of this year.

Abstract

We report the results of a search for axions from the 14.4 keV M1 transition from Fe-57 in the core of the sun using the axio-electric effect in TeO2 bolometers. The detectors are 5x5x5 cm3 crystals operated at about 10 mK in a facility used to test bolometers for the CUORE experiment at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy. An analysis of 43.65 kg d of data was made using a newly developed low energy trigger which was optimized to reduce the detectors energy threshold. An upper limit of 0.63 c kg-1 d-1 was established at 95% C.L.. From this value, a lower bound at 95% C.L. was placed on the Peccei-Quinn energy scale of fa >= 0.76 10**6 GeV for a value of S=0.55 for the flavor-singlet axial vector matrix element. Abstract

Neutrinoless double beta decay (Formula presented.) is one of the most sensitive probes for physics beyond the Standard Model, providing unique information on the nature of neutrinos. In this paper we review the status and outlook for bolometric (Formula presented.) decay searches. We summarize recent advances in background suppression demonstrated using bolometers with simultaneous readout of heat and light signals. We simulate several configurations of a future CUORE-like bolometer array which would utilize these improvements and present the sensitivity reach of a hypothetical next-generation bolometric (Formula presented.) experiment. We demonstrate that a bolometric experiment with the isotope mass of about 1 ton is capable of reaching the sensitivity to the effective Majorana neutrino mass (Formula presented.) of order 10–20 meV, thus completely exploring the so-called inverted neutrino mass hierarchy region. We highlight the main challenges and identify priorities for an R&D program addressing them.

Abstract

Compelling experimental evidences of neutrino oscillations and their implication that neutrinos are massive particles have given neutrinoless double beta decay (Formula presented.) a central role in astroparticle physics. In fact, the discovery of this elusive decay would be a major breakthrough, unveiling that neutrino and antineutrino are the same particle and that the lepton number is not conserved. It would also impact our efforts to establish the absolute neutrino mass scale and, ultimately, understand elementary particle interaction unification. All current experimental programs to search for (Formula presented.) are facing with the technical and financial challenge of increasing the experimental mass while maintaining incredibly low levels of spurious background. The new concept described in this paper could be the answer which combines all the features of an ideal experiment: energy resolution, low cost mass scalability, isotope choice flexibility and many powerful handles to make the background negligible. The proposed technology is based on the use of arrays of silicon detectors cooled to 120 K to optimize the collection of the scintillation light emitted by ultra-pure crystals. It is shown that with a 54 kg array of natural CaMoO4 scintillation detectors of this type it is possible to yield a competitive sensitivity on the half-life of the (Formula presented.)Mo as high as (Formula presented.) years in only 1 year of data taking. The same array made of 40CanatMoO4 scintillation detectors (to get rid of the continuous background coming from the two neutrino double beta decay of 48Ca) will instead be capable of achieving the remarkable sensitivity of (Formula presented.) years on the half-life of (Formula presented.) in only 1 year of measurement.

Abstract

A challenging aspect of the next generation detector for rare events searches (i.e. neutrinoless double beta decay and dark matter searches) is the reduction of the background in the region of interest that can mimic the expected signals. In the field of thermal detectors, which have a leading role in rare events searches thanks to their excellent energy resolution and to the wide choice of absorber materials, the background coming from surface contaminations is frequently dominant. A background surface rejection detector is a scintillation-based approach for tagging this type of background. We discuss the innovative application of this technique in non-scintillating thermal detectors. We will report on the performances of the prototype bolometric detector, realized to prove the feasibility of this new technique. © 2014 Springer Science+Business Media New York.

50. Challenges in double beta decay

Abstract

In the past ten years, neutrino oscillation experiments have provided the incontrovertible evidence that neutrinos mix and have finite masses. These results represent the strongest demonstration that the electroweak Standard Model is incomplete and that new Physics beyond it must exist. In this scenario, a unique role is played by the Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay searches which can probe lepton number conservation and investigate the Dirac/Majorana nature of the neutrinos and their absolute mass scale (hierarchy problem) with unprecedented sensitivity. Today Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay faces a new era where large-scale experiments with a sensitivity approaching the so-called degenerate-hierarchy region are nearly ready to start and where the challenge for the next future is the construction of detectors characterized by a tonne-scale size and an incredibly low background. A number of new proposed projects took up this challenge. These are based either on large expansions of the present experiments or on new ideas to improve the technical performance and/or reduce the background contributions. In this paper, a review of the most relevant ongoing experiments is given. The most relevant parameters contributing to the experimental sensitivity are discussed and a critical comparison of the future projects is proposed. © 2014 Oliviero Cremonesi and Maura Pavan.
