In this article, we analyze headscarf debates that unfolded in the first decade of the twenty-first century in France, the Netherlands, and Germany. Through a socio-historical overview looking at newspaper articles and policy and legal documents, we show how the headscarf has become a site for negotiating immigrant-related, postcolonial difference. We argue that certain feminist understanding of gender liberation and postcolonial difference in the headscarf debates reveal the continuity of control mechanisms from the colonial to the postcolonial era. We highlight the possibilities for decolonial thought and practice by centering the situatedness of headscarf. This allows us to show how Muslim citizens are active participants in producing contemporary Western European histories even as some of their practices face overt rejection. This article focuses on the maritime cultural landscape of the former Zuiderzee (ad1170–1932) in the central part of the Netherlands. Since the large-scale reclamations from the sea (1932–1968), many remains have been discovered, revealing a submerged and eroded late medieval maritime culture, represented by lost islands, drowned settlements, cultivated lands, shipwrecks, and consequently socio-economic networks. Especially the north-eastern part of the region, known today as the Noordoostpolder, is testimony to the dynamic battles of the Dutch against the water. By examining physical and immaterial datasets from the region, it is possible to give a modern-day idea of this late medieval maritime cultural landscape. Spatial distribution and densities of late medieval archaeological remains are analysed and compared to historical data and remote sensing results. This interdisciplinary approach has led to the discovery of the remains of the drowned settlement of Fenehuysen.

The Dutch author and illustrator Ted van Lieshout is famous and perhaps even infamous for his taboo-breaking children’s books. Van Lieshout has also found an original angle for fairy-tale illustrations, which he develops in particular in his short-story collections Driedelig paard (Tripartite Horse) from 2011 and Onder mijn matras de erwt (Under my mattress the pea) from 2017. While in the former, he illustrates the stories with sonnets compiled of images (“beeldsonnetten”), in the latter he uses dressed up wooden puppets to give new meaning to the texts. Both intriguing and mundane, uncanny and humorous, these images lend themselves to various interpretations. Moreover, Van Lieshout re-frames the fairy tales by placing them in a broader context: the short stories in Driedelig paard explore the tension between realism and fantasy, while in Onder mijn matras de erwt, Van Lieshout uses the tales for an exploration of divorce, loneliness and death. All these efforts combined give Grimm’s fairy tales new meaning and relevance for a contemporary, double-addressed audience.

Aquest article descriu les principals etapes que històricament ha viscut la societat neerlandesa en la seva lluita contra les inundacions fluvials i els temporals de mar. La vulnerabilitat a les inundacions és causada per la intervenció humana en els cicles de la natura, així com pel canvi climàtic i l'augment del nivell del mar. Històricament i després de cada calamitat, han sorgit nous projectes i s'han portat a terme mesures per reduir l'impacte de futures inundacions. Això inclou una forta voluntat de participació social en la gestió de l'aigua, exemplificada per la creació de les juntes d'aigües, ja a l'edat mitjana. Més recentment s'ha atorgat una prioritat al control dels temporals de mar a causa del seu potencial més elevat per causar danys. No obstant això, les inundacions fluvials del 1993 i el 1995 motivaren una acció més decidida sobre els dics fluvials. S'han aconseguit marges de seguretat relativament amplis, però la lluita ha de continuar a fi de poder-se adaptar a augments futurs del nivell del mar. Historiquement et après chaque calamité, ont surgi des nouveaux projets et ont été mise en place des mesures pour réduire l'impacte de futures crues et inondations. Ces mesures comprennent une forte volonté de participation social dans la gestion de l'eau, démontrée par la création, déjà dans le Moyen Âge, des «Conseils des Eaux». Récemment, il a été attribué le caracter de prioritaire au control des tempêtes de la mer dû à son potentiel pour provoquer des dégats. This article describes the main steps undertaken by Dutch society in order to fight against river floods and storm surges. Vulnerability to flooding is caused by human interventions in natural cycles as well as by climatic change and sea level rise. Historically, after each disaster, new projects have arisen and steps have been taken to reduce the impact of future floods. Priority has been given to the control of storm surges due to their greater potential for disaster. The riverine floods of 1993 and 1995, however, prompted the revision of river dykes, and their strengthening. Relatively wide security margins have been achieved against both river floods and storm surges. However, the struggle must continue to provide for future climatic change and sea level rise.

ENGLISH BELOW:De 1965 à 1975, des travailleurs immigrés venus seuls – la plupart originaires de Turquie, du Maroc et de l’Europe du Sud – ont participé aux transformations des cultures sexuelles et de genre de l’Europe du Nord. Cependant, à partir du milieu des années 1970, l’arrivée des épouses et enfants venus de leur pays d’origine conduit à un changement d’attitude à l’égard de la liberté sexuelle. Cet article explore, dans le cas des Pays-Bas, ce tournant conservateur chez les travailleurs immigrés lié au regroupement familial. Il propose l’utilisation du fonds de collections photographiques déposées par des immigrant.es à l’Institut d’histoire sociale d’Amsterdam et montre l’intérêt de ces archives personnelles pour écrire une histoire de la sexualité et de l’immigration.From the mid-1960s through the mid-1970s, solo male guest-workers – often from Turkey, Morocco, and southern Europe – participated in the radicalizing gender and sexual cultures of northwest Europe. From the mid-1970s onward, however, with the arrival of wives and children from their countries of origin, these men’s attitudes toward sexual liberty changed. This article explores this conservative turn during the guest-worker family reunification years in the Netherlands, using photographs from the Historical Image Archive of Migrants (International Institute of Social History, the Netherlands) to show how personal photo collections can contribute to histories of sexuality and immigration.

The principal argument of the article is that the architecture of the palaces of James V is more eclectic than previously assumed. The advanced French Renaissance character of parts of the Falkland Palace, dating from about 1537-41, is complemented by medieval elements in Falkland, Linlithgow and Stirling, and that this last also has stronger affinities with the buildings of the Habsburg dominions or Portugal than France. It also argues that the Linlithgow plan had a strong influence on the castle of Écouen and on Serlio's Ancy-le-Franc. Le principal argument défendu par cet article est que l'architecture des palais de Jacques V d’Écosse est plus éclectique qu'on ne le supposait jusqu'à présent. Au style français renaissant très marqué de certaines parties du palais des Falkland, datant de la période 1537-1541, s’ajoutent des éléments médiévaux dans les palais de Falkland, Linlithgow et Stirling. Ce dernier a également de plus fortes affinités avec les bâtiments des territoires des Habsbourg ou du Portugal qu’avec des constructions qui le précédèrent en France. Enfin, cet article soutient parallèlement que le plan du château de Linlithgow a influencé l’architecture des châteaux d'Écouen et d’Ancy-le-Franc, le chef d’œuvre de Sebastiano Serlio.

The past decades have seen an intensification of debate around migrants, gender and sexuality. For the Netherlands, several authors have pointed out how this has given rise to a form of sexual nationalism whereby the idea of being a modern, progressive country is strongly linked to a program of liberal sexual values and offset against a presumably ‘backward’ migrant who is ‘still’ religious and traditional. In this article, the author analyses how these dynamics played out in the controversy around HIV-healings or homo healings supposedly taking place in Pentecostal churches in Amsterdam. Media attention highlighted the theme of homosexuality while forgetting the interests of women. This article shows that the sexual nationalism scheme was also operative here, and proposes further developing existing approaches as intersectional ‘post-secularist’ sociological perspectives aimed at unearthing the ways narratives of modernity, secularization and sexual nationalism structure attitudes towards migrant and religious actors both in social scientific research agendas and among societal actors.

International audience; The term bioeconomy has been generated as a new discourse in the environmental policy arena. This paper raises three questions: (i) are environmentalconcerns integrated in the political discourses of bioeconomy and, if so, to what extent?, (ii) in which way is the environment framedin the political discourses of bioeconomy?, and (iii) are environmental concerns considered in the political discourses on forest-basedbioeconomy? The theoretical framework of this paper builds on the cognitive approach of policy integration and on frame analysis. Theempirical research design is a comparative qualitative analysis of five different political bioeconomy discourses in the EU and four different EUmember states – Germany, Finland, France and the Netherlands – in general and in the forestry sector specifically. Results show a weak andmainly rhetorical integration of environmental concerns in political bioeconomy discourses. Three major environmental frames are identified:(i) The dominant frame of ‘Environment benefitting from economic growth’, (ii) the ‘Environment as a challenge’ and (iii) the less visible‘Environment as a standard’ frame. In general, these frames address the environment mainly as a challenge or something that needs to be safeguardedwith the help of the bioeconomy. With the exception of Finland, amongst the countries studied, forests plays only a minor role inbioeconomy discourses while environmental concerns in this strand of discussion are mainly focused on sustainability arguments in general.

This paper presents an analytical framework to identify and understand grassroots water governance practices, which we call ‘rooted water collectives’ (RWC). RWCs can be multi-scalar organizations that engage in common property resources management or multi-scalar social movements that advocate for common property resources governance. The framework, which we open for discussion, scrutinizes (1) the extent to which ‘rooted water collectives’ are ‘grounded’ in the sense they address locally perceived water control problems and resort to water-context embedded meaning, values, identities, belonging and vernacular knowledge; (2) their internal decision-making dynamics; and (3) their effectiveness in achieving impact at multiple scales. It also considers five contextual factors that enable and constrain RWC development. RWC can be deployed as a conceptual lens, but also as an empirical manifestation constituting the object and subject of research. It differs from wide-spread top-down-implemented participatory water management approaches and common property resources management research, in the importance it gives to politics, advocacy and multi-scale social movements. The framework is illustrated with a cursory analysis of four cases: irrigators' federations in Peru; the ‘new water culture’ movement in Spain; collective irrigation in oases in North Africa; and loosely structured networks of irrigation water users in Cambodia.

Cet article est une première tentative de synthèse des données relatives aux prelectiones humanistes pour des cours de littérature grecque. D’un côté, il résume quelques traits communs en ce qui concerne la structure, les motifs et les thèmes les plus fréquents. De l’autre, il analyse quelques exemples tirés des prelectiones de deux savants bien connus, représentatifs de deux moments différents dans l’histoire de l’apprentissage du grec en Europe : Angelo Poliziano et Bonaventura Vulcanius.

This article offers a comparative study of everyday sexual ethics among Dutch Sunni Muslim and evangelical Christian young adults, both those born into religious families and those converted later in life. In European public debates, the sexual values of observant Christians and – especially – observant Muslims, are commonly understood to deviate from progressive norms. Particularly for Muslims, this has become a ground for questioning their belonging to the moral nation. Our ethnographic analysis complicates these conventional representations, which are partly reflected in quantitative survey research. We argue that the sexual ethics of the young Muslims and Christians we studied are multi-layered, situational, and dialogical. Discussing the convergences and divergences between these groups, we point to a paradox: while Muslims tend to be set apart as sexually ‘other’, the young Christians we worked with – and to a lesser extent the converted Muslims – put strikingly more effort into distinguishing themselves from, and criticising, dominant sexual norms.

The European Pregnancy and Paediatric HIV Cohort Collaboration (EPPICC) study group., [Objective]: The aim of this study was to describe growth during puberty in young people with vertically acquired HIV. [Design]: Pooled data from 12 paediatric HIV cohorts in Europe and Thailand. [Methods]: One thousand and ninety-four children initiating a nonnucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor or boosted protease inhibitor based regimen aged 1–10 years were included. Super Imposition by Translation And Rotation (SITAR) models described growth from age 8 years using three parameters (average height, timing and shape of the growth spurt), dependent on age and height-for-age z-score (HAZ) (WHO references) at antiretroviral therapy (ART) initiation. Multivariate regression explored characteristics associated with these three parameters. [Results]: At ART initiation, median age and HAZ was 6.4 [interquartile range (IQR): 2.8, 9.0] years and −1.2 (IQR: −2.3 to −0.2), respectively. Median follow-up was 9.1 (IQR: 6.9, 11.4) years. In girls, older age and lower HAZ at ART initiation were independently associated with a growth spurt which occurred 0.41 (95% confidence interval 0.20–0.62) years later in children starting ART age 6 to 10 years compared with 1 to 2 years and 1.50 (1.21–1.78) years later in those starting with HAZ less than −3 compared with HAZ at least −1. Later growth spurts in girls resulted in continued height growth into later adolescence. In boys starting ART with HAZ less than −1, growth spurts were later in children starting ART in the oldest age group, but for HAZ at least −1, there was no association with age. Girls and boys who initiated ART with HAZ at least −1 maintained a similar height to the WHO reference mean. [Conclusion]: Stunting at ART initiation was associated with later growth spurts in girls. Potato black dot, caused by Colletotrichum coccodes, damages tuber quality and may reduce yield. In previous work, four multimember vegetative compatibility groups (VCGs) have been reported. The objectives of the current study were to characterize a population of C. coccodes comprised of isolates from Israel and Northern Europe (EU/I) using VCG, and to assess the correlation between VCGs and aggressiveness of isolates on potato. A composite of 176 isolates was collected from symptomatic tissues of potato tubers or stems. A total of 6 (3.4%) isolates were characterized in VCG1; 29 (16.5%), 32 (18.2%), and 7 (4.0%) in VCG 2, 3, and 4, respectively; and 7 (4.0%), 9 (5.1%), 48 (27.3%), and 15 (8.5%) in the newly defined VCG 5, 6, 7, and 8, respectively. Twenty-three isolates (13%) were not assigned to any of the VCGs. Two of the VCGs had a specific geographical distribution: the 9 isolates assigned to VCG6 originated from The Netherlands, and 34 of 38 isolates assigned to VCG7 were from Scotland. Aggressiveness of isolates of a given VCG was examined on potato. VCGs 5 and 6 were comprised of the most aggressive isolates, and VCG1 of the least aggressive. These results could facilitate a more accurate evaluation of damage potential that may be caused by this pathogen.

Glaude Luython (1510-1568) et Nathanel Duez (1609-1660) sont deux maîtres de langues français qui exercèrent leur profession aux Pays Bas. L’objectif de cette étude est d’analyser leur production pédagogique pour observer comment les orientations qui sous-tendent l’enseignement du français ont pu varier dans l’espace d’un siècle. Luython vise à l’éducation et à la formation morale des jeunes ‘hollandais’ : la langue française est le moyen d’accéder aux valeurs et aux savoirs du monde classique. Duez, au contraire, affiche des objectifs plus franchement pragmatiques et utilitaires. Il offre aux étudiants des matériaux pédagogiques utiles pour affronter des situations de communication quotidienne et il propose un apprentissage plus autonome.

La grande variété des institutions catholiques d’avant la Réforme (monastères et couvents, chapitres et paroisses, églises et chapelles, vicairies et autres fondations pieuses) avait témoigné d’une vie religieuse riche et vibrante, exprimée avec succès dans la « Dévotion moderne » née dans ces pays, mais elle ne facilitait guère une politique religieuse cohérente, comme l’a montré à profusion l’opposition parfois violente au réaménagement des institutions ecclésiastiques à la suite du redécoupage plus rationnel des diocèses en 1559. Dès l’introduction de la Réforme au cours de la seconde moitié du XVIe siècle, et bien avant son acceptation par la masse des habitants, les autorités civiles et religieuses du régime protestant ont radicalement réformé et réorganisé le système des institutions religieuses, tout en établissant une distinction claire entre son fonctionnement, au sein de l’Église, et son financement, aux mains des autorités civiles. This article shows how one can read political history from evidence on corporate corruption. The study exploits newly discovered archival material from Banque de Paris et des Pays-Bas, a politically connected investment bank. We contribute to current research by replacing existing conjectures with precise qualitative and quantitative evidence. After reviewing previous works and providing a sketch of information repression and media control in France during the interwar period, we argue that the study of patterns of ‘informational criminality’ provides an original entry to the writing of political history and the history of information.

While Canada has experienced a long and successful history of encouraging social participation and community activity through its grantmaking foundation sector, this article argues that Canada’s historic and present-day regulatory restrictions have limited the extent to which its foundation sector has been allowed to innovate and flourish. To exemplify the types of tractable regulatory schemes that have allowed grantmaking foundation sectors in comparative contexts to prosper, the evolution of the grantmaking foundation sectors in Sweden, Germany, and the Netherlands is examined within the context of social origins theory. One important contribution of this article is to compare their regulatory frameworks to the Canadian context. It concludes with lessons learned for the Canadian grantmaking foundation sector and for public officials to consider.Bien que le secteur des fondations subventionnaires au Canada ait connu une longue histoire de réussites dans l’encouragement de la participation sociale et de l’activité communautaire, cet article soutient qu’une réglementation restrictive autant dans le passé qu’au présent a limité l’innovation et l’épanouissement dans le secteur. Afin de montrer comment une réglementation plus souple pourrait permettre aux fondations canadiennes de prospérer davantage, cet article recourt à la théorie des origines sociales pour examiner le secteur en Suède, en Allemagne et aux Pays-Bas. Une contribution importante de cet article consiste ainsi à comparer les contextes réglementaires dans ces pays à celui du Canada. En conclusion, il fait des recommandations pour les fondations subventionnaires et le secteur public canadiens.

Les mulieres religiosae des Pays Bas meridionaux du xiiie siecle ont ete le centre de reseaux sociaux animes par un sentiment d’amitie spirituelle. De nombreuses vitae en temoignent, particulierement celles de Thomas de Cantimpre. Pour comprendre l’importance de l’amitie spirituelle, celles-ci offrent un champ d’etudes exceptionnel et permettent de saisir, a travers l’ecriture de ce sentiment, la nature de celui-ci et son role dans le milieu devot. L’analyse du vocabulaire mis en œuvre, ainsi que la comparaison de deux manuscrits de la Vie de Lutgarde d’Aywieres permettent de repondre en partie a ces questions. Enfin, l’examen des beneficiaires de cette mise en scene litteraire de l’amitie spirituelle rend plus clair le role de la vita en tant que texte et en tant qu’objet, dans les reseaux de relations et notamment dans les liens d’amitie.

Burger M. J., Meijers E. J. and van Oort F. G. Regional spatial structure and retail amenities in the Netherlands, Regional Studies. This paper examines how the presence of retail amenities in Dutch regions is dependent on their spatial structure. Retail amenities, in particular those specialized retail functions that require a large urban support base, are less found in more polycentric and more dispersed regions. This can be explained by the observation that in polycentric and dispersed regions the degree of market fragmentation is higher as a result of more intense regional competition and spacing between retail centres. Evidence is found for ways to overcome the lack of agglomeration benefits in more polycentric and more dispersed regions. Both concentration of retail and more complementarities between cities' retail amenities may make up for the disadvantages of regions being polycentric or dispersed. Resume L’etude presentee dans le cadre de cet article constitue la synthese d’analyses traceologiques realisees sur plus de 900 artefacts en silex provenant de cinq sites dates du Mesolithique ancien (Ede, Evergem, Doel et Verrebroek) et recent (Hempens), situes dans la region des sols sablonneux du nord de la Belgique et des Pays-Bas. Les resultats fonctionnels obtenus, integres dans un contexte archeologique, paleo-environnemental et chronologique bien defini, portent un nouvel eclairage sur la fonction des industries mesolithiques et au-dela sur le fonctionnement des campements et des modalites d’occupation et d’exploitation de ces territoires. Il apparait notamment que dans cette region, tous les gisements sont des sites residentiels saisonniers de duree d’occupation breve, s’inserant dans un cycle de deplacements planifie. L’etude a egalement permis de mettre en evidence, l’emergence dans la region des sols sableux d’un nouvel artisanat lie au travail des plantes.

Background: Cosmetic products contribute considerably to the incidence of contact dermatitis. In response to a resolution of the Council of Europe, the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) in The Netherlands set up a pilot project to report undesirable effects attributed to cosmetic products. Objectives: To provide an overview of undesirable effects attributed to cosmetic products and to identify the ingredients involved. The information could contribute to the assessment of whether current EU legislation on cosmetics provides adequate protection. Patients/methods: General practitioners, dermatologists and consumers in The Netherlands completed questionnaires on reported undesirable effects of cosmetics. Dermatologists also carried out patch tests and, where necessary, tests with specific batch ingredients of the associated cosmetic product. A website and a public awareness campaign were launched to encourage consumers to report undesirable effects. Results: Between July 2009 and May 2011, the RIVM received more than 1600 reports. Severe undesirable effects were claimed in 1–4% of the cases. The most frequently reported cosmetic products were make-up and moisturisers, and the most frequently identified allergens were isothiazolinones and fragrance ingredients. Three patients tested positive for co-polymers/cross-polymers. Conclusions: Further investigations are recommended on the prevalence of isothiazolinone-induced allergic contact dermatitis and the allergenic potential of co-polymers/cross-polymers. (aut. ref.)

National audience; Assiste-t-on à une professionnalisation du métier d’enseignant ? L’Angleterre, les Pays-Bas et la Suède illustrent la dynamique dans laquelle semblent s’être engagés depuis quelques décennies bon nombre de systèmes éducatifs en Europe. On constate notamment une responsabilisation accrue des établissements scolaires, entraînés dans une démarche de véritable management des ressources contribuant de surcroît à estomper les frontières entre les secteurs public et privé. Plus récemment, le constat d’une pénurie d’enseignants qualifiés et d’une faible attractivité du métier d’enseignant, voire, dans le cas de la Suède, d’une baisse des acquis des élèves, attise les débats sur la qualité de l’éducation. À ce contexte particulier, les pouvoirs publics répondent par des réformes de la formation et de l’accès au métier. Pour autant ces dernières relèvent de logiques différentes : exigences de qualité renforcées en Suède et aux Pays-Bas, élargissement des viviers de recrutement dans le cas de l’Angleterre. La question de l’attractivité renvoie également au statut même des enseignants que ces derniers ressentent comme dévalorisé. De ce point de vue, les réformes engagées afin de rendre les enseignants de plus en plus comptables de la réussite éducative confèrent un rôle stratégique de gestionnaire aux administrations locales. Celles-ci ne semblent toutefois pas exercer d’effets sensibles sur la revalorisation collective du statut d’enseignant et se heurtent à des enjeux de légitimation.

Malaca, uma das mais valiosas possessões orientais da Coroa portuguesa, ocupava uma posição singular na costa ocidental da Península Malaia, num ponto de cruzamento de rotas, culturas, interesses e esferas de influência. Peça essencial na orgânica do Estado da Índia, Malaca, por razões geográficas, ecológicas e estratégicas viveu quase sempre num ambiente de cerco, rodeada por potentados asiáticos hostis, que periodicamente tentavam desalojar os portugueses. A União Ibérica, se num primeiro momento veio contribuir para o crescimento e a prosperidade desta cidade portuária, teve a prazo consequências desastrosas, por força da chegada ao mundo oriental de outras potências europeias, e nomeadamente dos holandeses. Estabelecidos na vizinha ilha de Java, os holandeses fizeram de Malaca um alvo prioritário dos seus ataques, ao mesmo tempo que assediavam a navegação lusitana que cruzava os Estreitos de Malaca e de Singapura. As relações entre Malaca e Manila, mesmo durante a União Ibérica, nunca permitiram a organização de uma frente comum contra os holandeses, que acabariam por conquistar a praça luso-malaia em 1641. Malacca, l’une des possessions orientales les plus précieuses de la couronne portugaise, occupait une position unique sur la côte ouest de la péninsule malaise, au carrefour de routes, de cultures, d’intérêts et de sphères d'influence. Élément clé de l’organisation de l’Estado da Índia, Malacca, pour des raisons géographiques, écologiques et stratégiques vivait presque toujours en état de siège, entourée par des potentats asiatiques hostiles qui essayaient périodiquement d’en déloger les Portugais. Si l’Union ibérique a contribué au début à la croissance et à la prospérité de cette ville portuaire, elle a eu des conséquences désastreuses à long terme, en vertu de l’arrivée dans le monde oriental d’autres puissances européennes, notamment les Néerlandais. Implantés sur l’île voisine de Java, les Hollandais ont fait de Malacca une cible prioritaire de leurs attaques, tout en assiégeant la navigation lusitanienne qui traversait les détroits de Malacca et de Singapour. Les relations entre Malacca et Manille, même pendant l’Union ibérique, n’ont jamais permis l’organisation d’un front commun contre les Hollandais, qui finiraient par conquérir la place portugaise en 1641.

Previous research has shown that the association between education and health is partly mediated by working conditions. So far, most studies fail to take into account working careers and instead focus on working conditions at one point in time. This study examines the extent to which current and lifetime exposure to working conditions differ between educational groups, and whether taking into account lifetime exposure rather than current exposure improves our understanding of educational differences in health. A representative sample of the Dutch population (n = 1561) with retrospective information about working careers shows that lower educated men are significantly more exposed to adverse working conditions than higher educated men. These differences increase over the life course. Among women there are relatively small educational differences in exposure. Lifetime exposure to adverse working conditions explains a significant part (a third) of the health differences between the highest and lowest educated men. Moreover, measurements of lifetime exposure to working conditions offer a better explanation for educational differences in health than measurements of current exposure. Among women, only relative lifetime exposure to working conditions can explain a small part of the educational differences in health, while current and absolute lifetime exposure do not explain these differences.

L’histoire de l’enseignement des langues aux Pays-Bas met en lumiere le role du francais dans la formation des elites neerlandaises. Durant quatre siecles, les maitres de langues y developperent des pratiques et des methodes d’enseignement, qui s’appuyaient sur une multitude d’ouvrages. Certains parmi ces enseignants ont reconnu l’interet didactique des images pour l’enseignement des langues. Toutefois, on en sait peu sur le statut et les fonctions des images dans les ouvrages qui furent utilises pour enseigner le francais aux Pays-Bas. C’est ce que nous tenterons de reconstituer dans cet article qui portera sur un corpus d’ouvrages edites au cours du XIXe siecle et jusqu’au milieu du XXe siecle, c’est-a-dire avant l’essor de la methode audio-visuelle, connue pour mettre expressement l’accent sur l’image comme support de l’apprentissage d’une langue.

Background: The measurement of peak nasal inspiratory flow (PNIF) is a simple, quick, easy to perform and cheap tool for determining the extent of nasal airway patency. However, normative data are rare and not available for Dutch children aged 6 to 11 years. Methods: Repeated PNIF measurements were obtained from 212 Dutch children of primary school age. Of these 212 children, 166 fulfilled the inclusion criteria of our study. The influence of age, gender, ethnicity, weight and height on PNIF was studied. Results: Age is the only parameter of influence on PNIF. All other parameters do not influence PNIF. Normative data are presented. Conclusion: PNIF measurements are possible in children aged six years and older. Age does influence PNIF, but gender, weight, height and ethnicity do not.

À travers l’histoire, peu de territoires ont été célébrés autant que les anciens Pays-Bas pour leur créativité artistique et leur esprit d’innovation. Aujourd’hui encore, cette tradition artistique et culturelle particulière, dont les origines remontent au début de l’époque moderne, reste associée aux territoires actuels de la Belgique et des Pays-Bas. Il suffit de penser à Jan van Eyck, qui stupéfia les Italiens par une utilisation unique de la peinture à l’huile ; aux tapisseries flamandes, qui conquirent en un rien de temps l’Europe de l’époque ; aux architectes amstellodamois du xviie siècle, qui jouissaient alors d’une grande renommée dans les pays baltes ; aux nus de Rubens, devenus proverbiaux ; ou encore aux fijnschilders de l’école de Leyde, recherchés aujourd’hui encore par de riches industriels américains. Toutefois, aussi unique et frappante que fût cette qualité partagée par les Pays-Bas du Nord (grosso modo les Pays-Bas actuels) et les Pays-Bas du Sud (grosso modo la Belgique actuelle), le phénomène n’a guère été étudié dans sa globalité : sur le comment et le pourquoi de cette caractéristique commune, la recherche est quasiment inexistante. Les raisons sont à rechercher notamment dans le nationalisme du xixe siècle, qui a introduit une forte opposition identitaire entre la Belgique et les Pays-Bas. Depuis lors, l’historiographie affiche une constante : le maintien d’une stricte distinction entre les deux territoires et, par conséquent, l’étude séparée de leur production artistique. 2Ces dernières années, des voix se sont élevées, çà et là, pour réclamer une nouvelle approche qui dépasse cette division artificielle et abandonne le point de vue nationaliste. L’adoption de nouvelles perspectives permettrait d’aboutir à une conception historiquement plus correcte. Partant de là, plusieurs questions se posent : quels sont les angles d’approche possibles ? Sur la base de quelles sources ? Quelle vision renouvelée peut-on attendre ?

The authors explore the effect of a religious upbringing on church attendance later in life. To this purpose, people who had been interviewed in 1983 as secondary students about their upbringing as well as other characteristics, were interviewed again in 2007 about the same topics. Comparisons between the 1983 and the 2007 data reveal that church attendance dropped significantly among these people during this period. Furthermore, it is shown that a religious upbringing is not a good predictor of church attendance later in life. These conclusions apply to Protestants and Catholics alike, as separate analyses for Catholics, Dutch Reformed and Re-Reformed reveal.

The enclosure of ancillary material within a letter-packet has long fascinated scholars interested in epistolary networks. This article explores the incorporation of roughly drawn manuscript sketch maps within letter-packets sent between intelligencers and diplomats in northern Europe and the administrative authorities in England in the sixteenth-century. It examines the practical acquisition of such maps by agents at times of diplomatic and/or military crisis, how these agents viewed the composite materials within the letter-packets and how they saw the inclusion of multiple forms of intelligence within dispatches as a method of enhancing their status in the landscape of political information and power.

Computer games were originally tools that let programmers demonstrate their craftsmanship, and firms used them to demystify computer operation and lure new individuals and groups. As computers became widespread, use and attitudes of actors toward games changed. With examples from the Netherlands, this article shows how games in domestic use lost their versatile meanings beyond entertainment.

In England and The Netherlands many early Baptists saw their theology and ecclesiology as a logical consequence of their Calvinism. The desire for a visible church led them to the vision for a Believers’ Church and from there to believers’ baptism.

The brominated flame retardant decabromodiphenylether (DBDE) was analysed in wild birds to identify the most suitable species for monitoring time trends in DBDE contamination. This information was later used for the design of a 10-year trend study on DBDE in the European Union. DBDE was measured in muscle tissue, liver, and eggs from 10 terrestrial and four aquatic bird species. DBDE was detected in 47% of the terrestrial bird samples (nine species) and in 9% of the aquatic bird samples (six species). Peregrine falcon and sparrowhawk specimens were selected as most suitable species to determine temporal trends of DBDE. For sparrowhawks, no significant change in DBDE concentrations between 1973 and 2001 was found, although in later years more DBDE concentrations were above the detection limit. Peak DBDE levels measured in peregrines in 1995, were followed by a decline in concentrations until 2001. The same species were used for a trend study on hexabromocylcododecane (HBCD). Twenty-four percent of peregrine falcon eggs and 12% of sparrowhawk muscle samples demonstrated measurable HBCD residues. Three diastereomers of HBCD were analysed and the α-diastereomer was the predominant one in most samples. No clear time trends were observed for HBCD in either species. This study demonstrated that these DBDE and HBCD are bioavailable to birds of Northern Europe, although bioaccumulation seems to occur to a limited extent. © 2010.

Purpose: To determine how many computed tomographic (CT) colonography training studies have to be evaluated by novice readers to obtain an adequate level of competence in polyp detection. Materials and Methods: The study was approved by the Institutional Review Board. Informed consent was obtained from all participants. Six physicians (one radiologist, three radiology residents, two researchers) and three technicians completed a CT colonography training program. Two hundred CT colonographic examinations with colonoscopic verification were selected from a research database, with 100 CT colonographic examinations with at least one polyp 6 mm or larger. After a lecture session and short individual hands-on training, CT colonography training was done individually with immediate feedback of colonoscopy outcome. Per-polyp sensitivity was calculated for four sets of 50 CT colonographic examinations for lesions 6 mm or larger. By using logistic regression analyses, the number of CT colonographic examinations to reach 90% sensitivity for lesions 6 mm or larger was estimated. Reading times were registered. Results: The average per-polyp sensitivity for lesions 6 mm or larger was 76% (207 of 270) in the first set of 50 CT colonographic examinations, 77% (262 of 342) in the second (P = .96 vs first set), 80% (310 of 387) in the third (P = .67 vs first set), and 91% (261 of 288) in the fourth (P = .018). The estimated number of CT colonographic examinations for a sufficient sensitivity was 164. Six of nine readers reached this level of competence within 175 CT colonographic examinations. Reading times decreased significantly from the first to the second set of 50 CT colonographic examinations for six readers. Conclusion: Novice CT colonography readers obtained sensitivity equal to that of experienced readers after practicing on average 164 CT colonographic studies. (C)RSNA, 2010
