Peer review remains the golden standard of scientific practice, but one that was never easily accepted, and often subjected to different criticisms. This has become more acute in recent years. Some of the challenges faced are lengthy review periods, difficulties by editors in finding willing reviewers, biased reviews, and a lack of incentive or recognition of the reviewers. The findings are that researcher, not respondent, views of performance dominate the literature which raises issues of relevance. Researchers are not necessarily being normative, and should be thoughtful in their selection of marketing performance objectives, i.e. the outcomes they seek to explain. The article discusses the format for the "Journal of Marketing" in the post World War II period. The major departments of the journal are discussed and outlined. A comparison of issues from the pre and post World War II period is presented. An additional section was introduced in 1951 and entitled "Legislative and Judicial Developments in Marketing." The editors explain that this section is an attempt to cover this aspect of marketing systematically. The journal expanded in size significantly since World War II. The amount of advertising has tripled in size since the journal's first decade of existence.

One way to measure the contribution of a journal to a discipline is to compare the number of citations made to that journal in subsequent papers published in its own and related disciplines [6]. Similarly, the number of citations made to articles published in a marketing journal would provide an objective measurement of the journal's use by the scholarly community. This article, based on a general-purpose citation indexing system, illustrates the extent of cross-referencing to the AMA's two journals, the Journal of Marketing and the Journal of Marketing Research. The most important application of the CASPER program is to assist marketing scholars and practitioners in coping with the information explosion. The marketing community, business firms, research organizations, and educational institutions need to review their journal subscription policies with regard to how well their collections are serving their needs [2]. If a marketing library cannot be complete, then it must be selective [8]. Therefore, it becomes essential to develop a means of identifying journals which are most useful to researchers and practitioners. Also, it would be helpful to journal editors and editorial boards to know how well their publication is serving the marketing community. The CASPER approach is not an alternative to readership surveys or other means of evaluating journals, but a method for examining one dimension of a professional journal's impact. It does not provide feedback on the acceptance rate or implementation experiences of marketing concepts by practitioners [8]. The most characteristic errors in the application of mathematical-statistic and modeling methods encountered periodically during the peer reviewing of geological scientific journals are analyzed, and recommendations for their elimination are given. Problems of the determination of relative errors in the simplified mathematical models are discussed. Necessity of calculating parameters of the background value and eliminating its influence on computation of the “useful signal” is shown. A graphic method for determining the minimum anomalous content is also proposed for discussion and testing. Purpose In a previous paper (McKinnon, 2013), the author questioned the principle and practice of journal ranking and discussed its effects on logistics research. Since then several important developments have occurred prompting a fresh review of the issues. The paper summarises the results of this review with the aim of stimulating further discussion on the subject.Design/methodology/approach New literature on the journal ranking debate has been reviewed. The validity of the journal ranking as a proxy measure of paper quality is explored using data from the UK Research Excellence Framework (REF) assessment. Changes to the ranking of ten logistics/supply chain management (SCM) journals in four listings are analysed, and possible reasons for the relatively low status of the journals are examined.Findings The influence of journal rankings on the academic research process is strengthening while the debate about their legitimacy has intensified. UK REF data cast doubt on the reliability of the journal ranking as an indicator of a paper’s merit. Logistics/SCM journals continue to occupy mid-to-lower tier positions in most listings, though there has been some improvement in their standing.Research limitations/implications The paper aims to alert those managing and undertaking logistics research to the dangers of overreliance on journal rankings in the measurement of research quality and productivity.Practical implications The paper may help logistics/SCM scholars to defend the position of their discipline and resist journal-ranking-induced pressures to marginalise it and devalue its outputs.Social implications In this paper, academic recruitment, promotion and motivation are considered.Originality/value The paper sheds new light on the relationship between journal ranking and individual paper quality, on recent changes in the rating of logistics/SCM journals and on the wider debate about the use of bibliometrics in assessing research quality. In the past few years, an increasing number of scholars have begun working to develop an integrated field introduced as a new discipline. From now on, these ‘memory studies’ have their own scientific journals, academic departments and international conferences. Now the scholars involved in this institutionalization situate themselves in an intellectual genealogy headed by the French sociologist, Maurice Halbwachs. Going back to Halbwachs’s original writing, this article argues that this genealogy rests upon a misreading. For the author of Collective memory, ‘memory’ was not a specific topic of research, but rather should be studied within and with the help of the ordinary tools and methods of general sociology. This article pleads the cause of this alternate route and, in doing so, hopes to introduce the reader to Halbwachs’s original theory and to its promising developments for contemporary studies in collective memory. Conducting and publishing research is at the heart of the academic social scientist's job. Understanding the publication process is critical for any scholar looking for a successful career. The current study draws on survey data from 117 editors of social science journals to identify how editors experience their jobs, how manuscript reviews are processed, and what aspects of editors, journals, and manuscripts are most important to editors' publication decisions. Results suggest that editors relied on their editorial boards and associate editors to do reviews and give advice, that the greatest challenge editors faced in dealing with manuscripts was slow reviewers, and that rarely did editors face allegations of plagiarism or have to deal with inappropriate reviews they did not want to send to the author(s). This essay is concerned with the understanding of China expressed through the wider periodical press. It shows that coverage of work relating to the rest of the world was substantial in the period, pointing out that the role of the periodical in mediating current knowledge about the globe has been substantially overlooked. The essay looks at the broader understanding of China in the period by looking at the representation of the Macartney embassy in a series of periodicals beyond the Quarterly and Edinburgh that have so far dominated our critical purview. Concentrating on reviews of Sir George Staunton's official Authentic Account (1797) of the Macartney Embassy of 1792–1794 and the spectrum of viewpoints it produced, it demonstrates the fluidity and ambivalence of periodical responses to China and the embassy and concludes that it would be wrong to assume that by the end of the eighteenth century, the ideological debate about China was settled.
