The Library of the Academy of Music of the University of Zagreb keeps a particularly valuable collection of personal papers – personal documents, manuscripts and other archives created and collected by local musicians, conductors, music teachers and music historians during the performance of their duties. In many cases, those materials came into the Library’s possession as a part of private donations and legacies. Recently, the librarians at the Library of the Academy of Music have started to arrange and describe those materials according to the principles of archival arrangement and description, and so far the personal papers of Theo Tabaka, Ivan Pinkava, Petar Dumičić and Zinka Kunc (Milanov) have been processed. The purpose of this paper is to point out the significance and value of such materials and to provide a brief overview of the contents of the personal papers processed so far. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This essay introduces readers to the recent discovery of the personal papers of Grand Steward Tajima Michiji. These documents capture the post-surrender reflections of Hirohito, Japan's Shōwa Emperor, and record him speaking on such issues as his war responsibility, as well as the culpability of prewar politicians such as Konoe Fumimaro and General Tōjō Hideki. In August 2019, Nippon Hoso Kyokai (Japan Broadcasting Corporation) (NHK) announced that it had gained privileged access to the papers. Acting on advice from scholars, it then released extracts from Tajima's audience records. Drawing not on the Tajima papers themselves, but on what the NHK has made available, the documents demonstrate that Hirohito, after Japan's surrender, experienced anguish and over the war and its outcome. He continued as emperor because he accepted "moral responsibility" for the war that required him to help his nation and its people endure occupation and reconstruction. This article also describes Hirohito's postwar reflections on several issues, such as Japanese field officers and subordinates in the 1930s initiating without authorization acts of aggression, the Rape of Nanjing, and Japan's postwar rearmament. While the Tajima papers will not resolve the ongoing debate over the emperor's responsibility for Japan's path of aggression before 1945, they do provide valuable insights about his role in and reaction to events before, during, and after World War II. Personal papers such as diaries or memoirs are established sources for historical, cultural and literary research. Special archival collections have been built up over the past decades. Depending on the focus of the content, these collections are composed very differently. With an intersectional approach, some of these differences are presented in this article: Are women and men documented differently in collections of personal papers from artists, scientists or politicians? How is the gender comparison in collections with an everyday history approach? Are women and men possibly represented here with different auto/biographical formats? And what about members of different social classes? Are there also diaries of workers or servants in the archives? The systematic comparison exposes structural inequalities in archival collections and thus shows the direct effects of documentation policies that have a lasting influence on which sources are ultimately available to research – and which are not. The paper outlines the manner in which the correspondence within personal papers can be arranged, based on the example of the personal papers of Vinko Pulišić, archbishop of Zadar and metropolitan of Dalmatia. The procedure of formation of this particular whole (i.e. correspondence) of the archival fonds and its arrangement had been done by taking into account the obligatory archival norms and by considering guidelines that had so far been published in literature dealing with the subject. At the same time, contemporary recommendations for arranging were mostly used, and, to a certain extent, adjusted to needs arising from the content of the archives. When it comes to arranging and describing personal papers, including correspondence as its component, besides general regulations and instructions that had to be taken into account, the important part in producing an inventory also depends on the personal judgement of the archivist. Hence, general archival principles pertaining to arranging do not exclude certain variations, but their implementation in some cases can contribute to a more complete and clear presentation of the archives. The paper gives an overview and outlines the basic characteristics of the correspondence of the renowned Croatian writer Miroslav Krleža (1893-1981) and his wife, the theatrical actress Bela (1896-1981), which are kept in the personal and family papers and archival collections of the Croatian State Archives. This batch of their correspondence has not been researched and only several letters of M. Krleža had been published in the 1988 book of his letters. Besides basic information about the quantity and timeframe of the correspondence, the emphasis is put on their contents, the latter often including Krleža’s views on various topics and individuals, while at the same time providing insight into his and Bela’s relationships with its recipients, as well as preoccupations that were on their mind at the time. The contents of letters and postcards are described or, in cases of greater value, quoted and additionally supplemented by the facts available from the archival material of the fonds/collections in question, and information from published sources that deal with M. and B. Krleža. Often the information revealed in the letters that only have a date enable after closer scrutiny to establish the year when they were written. The correspondence of the Krleža spouses is currently kept in 9 personal and 2 family papers, as well as 1 collection, namely: HR-HDA-772. Tarnik Family Papers, HR-HDA-781. The largest quantity is kept in the latter i.e. the total of 40 correspondence units. Marijan Matković was a prolific playwright, manager of the Croatian National Theatre during the period when B. Krleža was already an established actress in its drama section, and the editor-in-chief of the Forum literary journal which M. Krleža initiated and whose frequent collaborator he was. M. Krleža’s letters to Matković cover various subjects, from attempts to secure Bela’s leave from the theatre during his duties in Paris in 1950, his endeavours to use his social influence in order for certain works of other authors to be published, to Krleža’s involvement with various details regarding the publishing of Forum and at one point his displeasure with the direction the journal was taking. On the other hand, Bela’s letters to Matković, often more facetious and charming in tone, testify not only of the long-time friendship between the two families and her affection for the recipient, but also give hints of her privileged status in the Croatian National Theatre due to her husband’s importance and reputation in the socialist Yugoslavia. Whereas in the letters sent to Aleksandar Keško, a cultural worker from Sarajevo, among other things Krleža answers his questions on various topics and at times writes passages common to his novels or essays, his correspondence with the prominent Croatian publicist and émigré Bogdan Radica shows how their personal relationship changed over the years due to insurmountable political differences. A topic pertaining to the Croatian dissident poet Zlatko Tomičić, raised in Radica’s letter intended for Krleža, demonstrates that during his old age Krleža, in conversations published by his long-time associate Enes Čengić, was either prone to fabrications or absent-mindedness. Krleža’s letters from 1931 to Blaž Jurišić, a linguist and a journal editor, show him at the very peak of his literary activity in what was to be his most productive decade. The letters written to Krleža by Ante Mandić, a politician and a solicitor, just like Krleža’s letter to Juraj Tarnik, a chemist from Osijek, affirm Krleža as a person of influence in Tito’s Yugoslavia, whose connections and status were perceived to enable rectifying certain problems, such as employment in the Lexicographical Institute he headed or the issue of subtenants. Of the two letters written by Bela Krleža to the esteemed Croatian writer Milan Begović in 1926, the cryptic identity of a person called ‘The Countess’ in the second letter can be identified with considerable certainty through cast names on theatrical posters of Begović’s plays. The correspondence in the remaining fonds is of a lesser value and is therefore described to a lesser degree. It can be concluded that the correspondence of Miroslav and Bela Krleža in the mentioned fonds and collections of the Croatian State Archives supplements the so far uncomplete research of this particular field. New acquisitions of personal/family papers will undoubtedly augment the total quantity of their letters kept in the central Croatian archival institution and thusly enable further and more complete research. This paper outlines the Polish reception of achievements of the French school of genetic criticism. It highlights the applicability of this methodology in research on the archives of artists, in particular autobiographical writings that shed light on the creative process. The second part of the paper presents approaches currently emerging in France, where the method of genetic criticism in research on artistic archives is becoming more prominent.

“I am aware of the difficulties and I do not get disheartened”: Wanda Dynowska’s Papers about India Collected in Tadeusz Pobożniak’s Archive The aim of the present paper is to discuss the process of self-creation discernible in hitherto unpublished letters written by Wanda Dynowska-Umadevi to Tadeusz Szukiewicz, her literary representative in Poland, acting on her behalf in 1938–1939. Besides discussing the documentary value of the letters, which, for instance, shed some light on Dynowska’s relationship with Tadeusz Pobożniak and her other eminent contemporaries, or contextualize the origin of selected volumes published afterwards with Biblioteka Polsko-Indyjska (Polish-Indian Library), I also try to show that the manner of Dynowska’s self-creation in the personal documents that predominantly concern the efforts to publish her articles intended to popularize India in Poland could have been shaped by the particular addressee of her letters, and thus culminated in Dynowska projecting herself in her own writings.

Archives have traditionally served to researchers as sources of knowledge, seen with the perspective of the years, it has allowed them to know the past and make it known to the present and future generations. There is fortunately increasing more publications on recent history, supported by original documents. With this reality in mind, the purpose of this communication is to show the importance of the personal fonds as a source for recent history focusing on the background of one of the protagonists of Spanish political life during the period of the Transition from the dictatorship of the General Franco to the constitutional monarchy: Joaquín Garrigues Walker. In particular, the contribution that is offered is the finding aid of the personal fond of Joaquín Garrigues Walker, resulting from all this process, which includes map series of the Fund with its description. Ethel Weed (1906-1975) was one of the few American women who devised and implemented U.S. foreign policy during the U.S. occupation of Japan from 1945-1952. As Chief Women's Information Officer she was in charge of all initiatives aimed at the "democratization" Japanese women. While previous works on Ethel Weed have examined her public persona, this article turns to her private thoughts by examining letters that Weed wrote home during her time in Japan. These letters show that Weed drew great inspiration from the Japanese women with whom she worked during the occupation. As this article contends that Weed was awed and inspired by the struggles of the women, both prominent and ordinary, whom she came to know. Moreover, through her work in Japan, she came to believe that the people of the world, including those in once warring nations, must begin to learn from one another. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Since the turn of the century large groups of former institutionalised children have exercised their right to see their ‘personal files’, and this has drawn widespread attention to these documents and their potential in scholarly research. This article explores the meanings of personal files from the period 1945–1984 as sources for both historical researchers and adult care leavers themselves, in the context of the orphanages in Ghent, Belgium. Based on the experiences of those who have consulted their files, we come to the conclusion that the personal files of the Ghent orphans provide some new information but, at the same time, leave a lot of issues unresolved. Although the files offered significant insights for researchers studying the most recent period in the history of the Ghent orphanages, it is difficult to see them as ‘keys to the past’ for former orphans who are trying to (re)construct their own, individual life histories. The modest goal of the paper is to present, in a brief and panoramic way, some thoughts on the challenges of biographical research through personal files. To do so, from some examples seeks to draw attention to the need of the young researcher to realize the file and its documentary resources as technical and socio-historical construction, questioning the stored document functionality and, in particular, some nuances of personal files regarding the reconstruction of an individual trajectory. Los rastros de la escritura dejados al paso del sentimiento, de la pasión o del odio, se concretan en tipologías documentales específicas que amplían el conocimiento de los testimonios textuales y gráficos propios de los archivos personales y familiares. Amor y muerte, tomados como extremos de la condición humana generan prácticas de escritura que hacen posible la comunicación entre presentes y ausentes. Se estudian prácticas, resultados y representaciones del amar y morir por escrito, que establecen un vínculo que abarca no sólo siglos porque, en realidad, se trata de necesidades atemporales de documentar los hechos significativos de las emociones y los sentimientos humanos próximos a esos dos horizontes representados por Eros y Tánatos.The context of creation, use and conservation of records suggests an interesting parallel between archival description and Social History of Written Culture. Writings alluding to feelings take specific forms and types that broaden knowledge of textual and graphic testimony to include personal and family papers and keepsakes. The themes of love and death, understood as extremes of the human condition, engender writing practices that attempt to bridge the gap between the absent and the living. Representational practices in written artifacts are studied from the perspective of the timeless need to record the significant facts of the human experience of Eros and Thanatos.

Gottfried Samuel Fraenkel (1901-1984) was a famous entomologist, not a music scholar, nor a professional musician. Nevertheless, he was a knowledgeable collector and sometimes a shrewd dealer. The University of Illinois Library acquired Gottfried S. Fraenkel's collection thirty years ago. In 2014, the collection was finally fully cataloged and made available for scholars. It comprises over 1,300 works of first and early editions by standard Western European composers from baroque, classical, and romantic eras. His collection is a result of someone who genuinely loved collecting, delighted in finding musical treasure, and appreciated music. The article discusses the law that protects children of a divorced couple and handling of parents' mental health records in their litigation. It mentions that the counselling and mental health records of a parent must be protected and held confidential at all costs. It further mentions that confidentiality of these records must be kept aside when litigating the best interest of a child.

The applicability of archival identification to personal archives is explored. The goal is to evidence the role of archival identification in the organization method of personal papers. In this sense, the hypothesis is explored that archival identification contributes largely to ensure to the appropriate treatment and custody of personal records, because it involves a deep study of the genesis of the archive, with the purpose to investigate its provenance, retrieve and show its inherent elements in their various levels. Federico Gamboa (1864 - 1939), was a writer and diplomat, but also was a prolific and disciplined memorialist. His self-referential works, composed of an autobiography (Impressions and memories, 1893) and five journals published in Life (two posthumously), known as My Journal: much of my life and some of the others, narrated more than fifty years in the life of a protagonist and perceptive observer of the Mexican way of life (1880 - 1939). It is known that this Mexican writer maintained a voluminous correspondence with many intellectuals, unfortunately the majorities of these letters are missing and as few are found scattered in other editions of authors or libraries. This is the case of the epistolary relationship between Gamboa and former private secretary of the Emperor of Mexico (1863 - 1867), Maximilian I, José Luis Blasio (1842 - 1923). The 20 letters, conserved in the Centre for Historical Studies, Mexico, CARSO, are just a small sample of this type of personal papers, but allow collate both facet of carefree young Gamboa hinted in his early autobiography, and many facts about his exile (1914 - 1919) and its development in Mexican diplomacy. Archives are subject to various processes of collection and selection that takes place before and after a collection has been donated to an archival institution. However, the processes of packing donated material are rarely discussed in archival discourse, even though it plays an integral part in forming the archive that is eventually presented to the researcher. Taking its cue from recent calls for an ethnographic approach to studying archives, not only as places housing information but also as places worthy of interrogation, this article reflects on the processes of archive making and the experience of inspecting and collecting the Ben Segal collection, a collection of significant importance to South African folk music studies. The article discusses a reexamination of the application of the third-party doctrine to conveyed papers and records as of January 2014, focusing on the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling in the case United States v. Jones which deals with trespass, search and seizure laws, and a reasonable expectation of privacy. According to the article, the third-party doctrine states that individuals lose their Fourth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution protection for information knowingly revealed to third parties.

Who should own a federal judge's papers? This question has rarely been asked. Instead, it has generally been accepted that the Justices of the U.S. Supreme Court and other federal judges own their working papers, which include papers created by judges relating to their official duties, such as internal draft opinions, confidential vote sheets, and case-related correspondence. This longstanding tradition of private ownership has led to tremendous inconsistency. For example, Justice Thurgood Marshall's papers were released just two years after he left the bench, revealing behind-the-scenes details about major cases involving issues such as abortion and flag burning. In contrast, Justice David Souter's papers will remain closed until the fiftieth anniversary of his retirement, and substantial portions of Justice Byron White's papers, including files relating to the landmark case of Miranda v. Arizona, were shredded. In addition, many collections of lower federal court judges' papers have been scattered in the hands of judges' families. Notably, this private ownership model has persisted despite the fact that our country's treatment of presidential records shifted from private to public ownership through the Presidential Records Act of 1978. Furthermore, private ownership of judicial papers has endured even though it has proven ill-equipped to balance the many competing interests at stake, ranging from calls for governmental accountability and transparency on the one hand, to the judiciary's independence, collegiality, confidentiality, and integrity on the other. This Article is the first to give significant attention to the question of who should own federal judges' working papers and what should happen to the papers once a judge leaves the bench. Upon the thirty-fifth anniversary of the enactment of the Presidential Records Act, this Article argues that judges' working papers should be treated as governmental property--just as presidential papers are. Although there are important differences between the roles of president and judge, none of the differences suggest that judicial papers should be treated as a species of private property. Rather than counseling in favor of private ownership, the unique position of federal judges, including the judiciary's independence in our constitutional design, suggests the advisability of crafting rules that speak to reasonable access to and disposition of judicial papers. Ultimately, this Article--giving renewed attention to a long-forgotten 1977 governmental study commissioned by Congress-- argues that Congress should declare judicial papers public property and should empower the judiciary to promulgate rules implementing the shift to public ownership. These would include, for example, rules governing the timing of public release of judicial papers. By involving the judiciary in implementing the shift to public ownership, Congress would enhance the likelihood of judicial cooperation, mitigate separation of powers concerns, and enable the judiciary to safeguard judicial independence, collegiality, confidentiality, and integrity. The article discusses the history and activities of the Louise-Otto-Peters-Gesellschaft, a learned society established in Leipzig, Germany, in 1993 to study the life, writings, and activism of 19th-century German author and feminist Louise Otto-Peters. The author outlines the difficulties of collecting the personal papers, letters, and manuscripts of Otto-Peters, which are housed in various different archives, libraries, and repositories in Germany. Information about the goals of the society's founder, Johanna Ludwig, the publication of a yearbook, and conferences organized by the society is also provided.

Most discussions of John Maynard Keynes's activities in connection with Newton are restricted to the sale in 1936 at Sotheby's of Newton's Portsmouth Papers and to Keynes's 1946 essay 'Newton, the Man'. This paper provides a history of Keynes's Newton-related work in the interim, highlighting especially the events of 1942 and 1943, which were particularly relevant to the Royal Society's role in the domestic and international promotion of Newton's legacy. During this period, Keynes lectured twice on Newton, leaving notes that would later be read by his brother Geoffrey in the famous commemoration of the Newton tercentenary in 1946. In 1943 Keynes assisted the Royal Society in its recognition of the Soviet celebrations and in the acquisition and preservation of more of the Newton library. In each instance Keynes took the opportunity to promote his interpretation of Newton as 'the last of the magicians': a scientist who had one foot in the pre-modern world and whose approach to understanding the world was as much intuitive as it was methodical. A significant cache of hitherto unidentified manuscripts of Sir Kenelm Digby (1603-1665) has been discovered in the Bibliothèque Nationale et Universitaire de Strasbourg. These manuscripts comprise over 5000 pages of material. The documents relate almost entirely to metallic transmutation. About half of the material consists of alchemical treatises (most of them unpublished) by earlier authors - many relate to the transmuter Noël Picard, known as Dubois, executed in 1637 - and show Digby's careful comparison of variant readings in order to obtain the best text. The other half contains transcripts from the otherwise lost notebooks of Joseph Du Chesne, Samuel Cottereau Duclos (including several letters from Johann Rudolf Glauber), and others, as well as reports of experiments and processes carried out by a range of informants and by Digby himself. Significantly, these manuscripts bear witness to an important alchemical circle - of which Digby was a part - active in Paris during the 1650s and 1660s. The members of this circle traded manuscripts and information, and collaborated on a variety of alchemical projects; several members were also involved in other, better-known, scientific groupings of mid-century Paris. The papers and manuscripts of Joseph Du Chesne (1546-1609) were praised by many readers in the 17th century, who often copied extracts from them. Although we are no longer able to trace the original manuscripts, several people are said to have owned them in the 17th century. I try here to put together all the available data on this matter, in order to shed some light on the main possessors of Du Chesne's papers from his death in 1609 up to 1660. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article discusses digital evidence and the history pf private "papers" as special objects of search and seizure in America as of January 2013, focusing on the impact of technology on evidence law in the U.S., as well as information on general warrants and state search and seizure provisions prior to the establishment of the U.S. Constitution (USC). The Fourth Amendment to the USC is addressed, along with probable cause and the U.S. Supreme Court case Boyd v. United States. American common law and constitutional protections in the U.S. are examined.

Freud's 'Critical Introduction' has many of the markers of a purely neuroanatomical text. But a comparison with contemporary anatomical writings as well as an analysis of the larger scientific, clinical and institutional context of Freud's work suggests important differences. Freud's manuscript was an ambitious enterprise to reform the brain sciences of the 1880s to open them up to nervous conditions that were only poorly accounted for by the predominant German model of a somatically informed psychiatry. It marks an attempt to bridge the two cultures of French and German-speaking neurology, as well as scientific and clinical medicine. By navigating these different contexts, the text provides a clue to the relationship between Freud's early scientific work and his developing psychoanalysis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hayek famously claimed that he would prefer a 'liberal' dictator to 'democratic government lacking in liberalism.' While Hayek's views of the Pinochet regime have generated much controversy, surprisingly little has been written about Hayek's defense of transitional dictatorship. Making use of previously un-translated foreign language archival material, this paper helps shed light on Hayek's views of authoritarianism, totalitarianism, transitional dictatorship, and the Pinochet regime as well as helping to separate Hayekian 'fact' from Hayekian 'fiction'. Alfred Deakin experienced himself as divided between an inner and outer self. He remembered himself as an unhappy child who sought solace in books and fantasy, creating an inner chamber of day-dreaming and escape. Historians have puzzled over this fruitlessly but on the basis of psychoanalytic theory and new evidence about his mother Sarah I argue that one possible source of Deakin's complex psychology is his mother's depression in the early years of her migration when Deakin was a young child. Also formative for Deakin was his parents' active participation in mid-Victorian literary culture and their unusually strong commitment to their children's education. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

One of the most important concepts of modern commercial speech related to advertising, characterized as the "Powellian balance," resulted in a compromise between those who thought commercial expression should receive little or no First Amendment protection and those who argued that it receive the same expansive protection accorded to political expression. The private papers of Justice Lewis F. Powell, Jr. reveal the remarkable degree to which he maintained a deep commitment to balancing competing interests in shaping the commercial speech doctrine. This article is an account of the online presentation of the personal papers of the late British artist John Latham. The John Latham Archive online follows the proposal of creative archiving and has been implemented using the Drupal content management system. The author begins with a summary of the ideas of creative archiving and explains how these depend on recent innovations of online software. The article continues by highlighting the potential of Drupal as an archiving tool for creative archiving. An example implementation of the John Latham Archive online is described by relating the cosmological ideas of the artist with practical software tools which have been used to model them. This article describes the birth and development of the political archives that Venetian patrician families kept in their private palaces for the use of the Republic's officeholders. It will shed light on the different uses made of public documents as well as on the different approaches to recordkeeping, from the fifteenth to eighteenth centuries. These archives, shared by all family members and transmitted from generation to generation, eventually became extremely voluminous partly because copies from documents in public registries were made and kept, but also because new types of analytical documents based on data extracted from the public record were introduced. Until the eighteenth century, when rational retrieval systems began to be introduced, the documents were kept in 'buste' (containers) and extracted as and when needed by the officeholder.
