A compelling body of evidence points to pulmonary thrombosis and thromboembolism as a key feature of COVID-19. As the pandemic spread across the globe over the past few months, a timely call to arms was issued by a team of clinicians to consider the prospect of long-lasting pulmonary fibrotic damage and plan for structured follow-up. However, the component of post-thrombotic sequelae has been less widely considered. Although the long-term outcomes of COVID-19 are not known, should pulmonary vascular sequelae prove to be clinically significant, these have the potential to become a public health problem. In this Personal View, we propose a proactive follow-up strategy to evaluate residual clot burden, small vessel injury, and potential haemodynamic sequelae. A nuanced and physiological approach to follow-up imaging that looks beyond the clot, at the state of perfusion of lung tissue, is proposed as a key triage tool, with the potential to inform therapeutic strategies.

Many slow to moderate landslides are monitored in order to react on time and prevent loss of lives and reduce material damage. In most of such cases there are very limited data on the geometry, hydrogeological and material properties of the landslide. The aim of the paper is to test the ability of artificial neural networks (ANN) to make reliable short term predictions of rainfall induced landslide movements based on normally available data: rainfall and measured displacements. The back propagation artificial neural network was trained and tested for two sliding phenomena, which are very different in nature. One is moderately moving earthflow and the other very slow landslide, with maximum rate of movements 600 mm/day and 0.094 mm/day, respectively. The results show that in both cases a trained ANN can predict landslide movements with sufficient reliability and can therefore be used together with weather forecast to assist authorities when faced with difficult decisions, such as evacuation. The accuracy of the ANN prediction of movements depends on the type and architecture of ANN as well as on the organisation of the input data used for training, as it is shown by case histories.

The article considers the failed attempts by Amir Amanullah and Mohammed Daud to promote reform in Afghanistan, before sketching the early origins of the Taliban in the madrassahs of Pakistan, the realities of Pushtun identity and the process of radicalisation of the Taliban administration after 9/11. The nature of their current support base is evaluated in the context of the methods used by the Coalition forces and the performance of the Afghan Government. The conclusion is that the best hope of a solution lies in some sort of negotiated settlement, but the social space for any deal is very restricted, given the conservatism of the vast majority of Afghans. On 3 October 2007, 40 participants with diverse expertise attended the workshop Tamiflu and the Environment: Implications of Use under Pandemic Conditions to assess the potential human health impact and environmental hazards associated with use of Tamiflu during an influenza pandemic. Based on the identification and risk-ranking of knowledge gaps, the consensus was that oseltamivir ethylester-phosphate (OE-P) and oseltamivir carboxylate (OC) were unlikely to pose an ecotoxicologic hazard to freshwater organisms. OC in river water might hasten the generation of OC-resistance in wildfowl, but this possibility seems less likely than the potential disruption that could be posed by OC and other pharmaceuticals to the operation of sewage treatment plants. The work-group members agreed on the following research priorities: a) available data on the ecotoxicology of OE-P and OC should be published; b) risk should be assessed for OC-contaminated river water generating OC-resistant viruses in wildfowl; c) sewage treatment plant functioning due to microbial inhibition by neuraminidase inhibitors and other antimicrobials used during a pandemic should be investigated; and d) realistic worst-case exposure scenarios should be developed. Additional modeling would be useful to identify localized areas within river catchments that might be prone to high pharmaceutical concentrations in sewage treatment plant effluent. Ongoing seasonal use of Tamiflu in Japan offers opportunities for researchers to assess how much OC enters and persists in the aquatic environment. In this article the author focuses initially on the degree of support provided by the international community to the interim administration of Afghanistan and notes that the pledges made at the Tokyo Conference do not equate to the per capita levels of funding made available for other recent emergencies. He draws attention to the inter–relationship between security and funding for reconstruction and comments that the recent decision of the US government to join with others in agreeing to finance work to upgrade the major highway system is very timely in shoring up the regime in the wake of the recent assassination attempt on Hamid Karzai. He stresses that the international community needs to provide sustained support to the new government if it is to survive. He also analyses the complex relationship between the administration and the aid community and reports on the calls by the government to be given the major part of the resources allocated by international donors and to be supported to take the lead in determining policy and strategy. The author notes the nature of the Afghan economy and the potential for reconstruction, taking account of the economic impact of the conflict, the progress made by the aid community since 1992, the humanitarian crisis arising from the drought of 1999–2001 and the large scale, mainly involuntary, return of refugees from Pakistan and Iran since March 2002. He comments on the fact that the agricultural economy cannot support its population, on the need for economic safety valves in the form of migration to Pakistan and Iran, on the availability of camps for internally displaced people, and on urbanization. In concluding the author is both optimistic and cautious, noting the fragility of the situation, but also acknowledging that the international community is taking timely action to address it through reconstruction assistance although it remains reluctant to give sufficient priority to security provision.

The need for experiments to study physical aspects of craft of the past is stated, as well as the necessity for them to have clear aims and to follow the established principles of scientific enquiry. These principles are discussed in this joint paper by ten maritime archaeologists and others, together with methods and some points of management critical to their application in this field.

standing of the economic and political status of the Roman city and of all structures, public, domestic, commercial, and industrial; and it would not be an exaggeration to say that this is one of the most important research topics associated with the archaeology of Londinium. This view of the changing urban population, however, has been challenged recently by Brian Yule,2 who has suggested that the later Roman occupation could have been much greater than has been thought because the late Roman 'dark earth' may have been 'reworked' by worm action and the 'insubstantial remains like occupation silts or clay and timber building remains could be thoroughly mixed'. He concluded that 'interpretation based on the surviving stratigraphy below the "dark earth" may seriously underestimate the density of occupation in the later Roman period'. Yule hoped that his challenging comments would re-open the debate. In this paper an attempt is made to address the problem, to find an objective method of assessing the relative levels of population in Roman London and to suggest lines of future study.

In April and June 1972 Sotheby’s auctioned part of the most valuable antique treasure yet recovered from an historic shipwreck around the British Isles, and yet despite extensive publicity in the months before, in which the value of that part of the treasure was estimated at £ 1OO,OOO, not one museum approached the divers to discover what they had found. Had this been done the museum would have discovered, amongst many other things, fragments of the oldest known octant, predecessor of the sextant, and the first accurate navigation instrument, as well as one or two previously unrecorded silver coins.
