Recently diverged or diverging populations can offer unobstructed insights into early barriers to gene flow during the initial stages of speciation. The current study utilised a novel insect system (order Mantophasmatodea) to shed light on the early drivers of speciation. The members of this group have limited dispersal abilities, small allopatric distributions and strong habitat associations in the Cape Floristic Region biodiversity hotspot in South Africa. Sister taxa from the diverse family Austrophasmatidae were chosen as focal species (Karoophasma biedouwense, K. botterkloofense). Population genetics and Generalized Dissimilarity Modelling (GDM) were used to characterise spatial patterns of genetic variation and evaluate the contribution of environmental factors to population divergence and speciation. Extensive sampling confirmed the suspected allopatry of these taxa. However, hybrids were identified in a narrow region occurring between the species' distributions. Strong population structure was found over short geographic distances; particularly in K. biedouwense in which geographic distance accounted for 32% of genetic variation over a scale of 50 km (r =.56, p <.001). GDM explained 42%–78% of the deviance in observed genetic dissimilarities. Geographic distance was consistently indicated to be important for between species and within population differentiation, suggesting that limited dispersal ability may be an important neutral driver of divergence. Temperature, altitude, precipitation and vegetation were also indicated as important factors, suggesting the possible role of adaptation to local environmental conditions for species divergence. The discovery of the hybrid‐zone, and the multiple allopatric species pairs in Austrophasmatidae support the idea that this could be a promising group to further our understanding of speciation modes. Two possible anti-predator roles of the hypertrophied hindwings of the neuropteran Palmipenna aeoleoptera were examined: that of decoys in redirecting robber fly attacks to less vulnerable parts of the body, and that of the contribution of these hindwings to apparent larger size. Eight species of robber fly, predominantly Neolophonotus species, coexisted with P. aeoleoptera at the study site in Biedow valley, Namaqualand. A selectivity index showed that P. aeoleoptera was preferentially taken as prey. The hindwings of P. aeoleoptera apparently did not redirect robber fly attacks, as the majority of these took place on the body rather than on the hindwings. Live P. aeoleoptera with intact or amputated hindwings were used as lures in lether trials to determine whether the hindwings influenced attack by robber flies. A greater proportion on the robber flies (mainly N. expandocolis) preferentially attacked the lure with amputated hindwings, while those attacking the lure with intact hindwings (N. abuntius and N. bimaculatus) were larger. Thus the hindwings of P. aeoleoptera would appear to deter attack by the more common, smaller robber flies by providing an illusion of greater size.

1. Circular bare patches occur in high numbers among the vegetation of the Namib Desert margin. There is an ongoing scientific debate on the origin of these so‐called "fairy circles" (FCs). One of the most frequently discussed hypotheses regards the bare patches to be the result of localised herbivory by sand termites of the genus Psammotermes (family Rhinotermitidae). 2. In all earlier publications, the fairy circles of the Namib Desert region within their entire range from Angola through Namibia to South Africa were, in principle, regarded to be of one type, albeit increasing in size towards the north. Here we present evidence that at −16.23° latitude there is an abrupt discontinuity which separates the FCs on either side from each other. 3. South of this discontinuity all studied FCs share the properties of the previously described fairy circles in Namibia and South Africa, especially the presence of Psammotermes termites. 4. In contrast, north of −16.23°S the FCs are much larger and are caused by a different and undescribed termite species, most closely related to the harvester termite genus Microhodotermes (family Hodotermitidae). The two sets of fairy circles differ in a specific set of morphological features, associated termites, and soil parameters. 5. The observed juxtaposition of the newly discovered large structures caused by a hodotermitid termite and the Psammotermes FCs caused by a rhinotermitid species is interpreted as an interesting example of convergent evolution resulting in similar ecological structures. The recently discovered insect order Mantophasmatodea currently comprises 19 Southern African species. These mainly occur in allopatry, have high levels of color polymorphism and communicate via species- and gender-specific vibratory signals. High levels of interspecific morphological conservatism mean that cryptic species are likely to be uncovered. These aspects of Mantophasmatodean biology make them an ideal group in which to investigate population divergence due to habitat-specific adaptation, sexual selection, and potentially sensory speciation. Lack of appropriate genetic markers has thus far rendered such studies unfeasible. To address this need, the first microsatellite loci for this order were developed. Fifty polymorphic loci were designed specifically for Karoophasma biedouwense (Austrophasmatidae), out of which 23 were labeled and tested for amplification across the order using 2-3 individuals from 10 species, representing all 4 currently known families. A Bayesian mitochondrially encoded cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) topology was reconstructed and divergence dates within the order were estimated for the first time. Amplification success and levels of polymorphism were compared with genetic divergence and time since divergence. In agreement with studies on vertebrate taxa, both amplification and variability were negatively correlated with distance (temporal and genetic). The high number of informative loci will offer sufficient resolution for both broad level population genetic analysis and individual based pedigree or parentage analyses for most species in Austrophasmatidae, with at least some loci available for the other families. Evolutionary relationships in the widely distributed velvet worm Peripatopsis balfouri sensu lato species complex were examined using DNA sequence data, gross and SEM morphology. Sequence data were generated for the COI mt DNA and the 18S rRNA loci and analysed using a Bayesian inference approach, maximum likelihood and maximum parsimony. Phylogenetic analyses of the combined DNA sequence data revealed that Peripatopsis clavigera specimens from the southern Cape (clade 1) was sister to P. balfouri sensu lato specimens from the Cederberg Mountains (clade 2). Within the main P. balfouri sensu lato species complex, three addition clades could be discerned (clades 3, 4 and 5). The obligatory troglobitic species Peripatopsis alba was equidistant between the Cape Peninsula and adjacent interior (clade 3) and the two Boland and Hottentots Holland Mountains (clades 4 and 5). On the Cape Peninsula, P. stelliporata specimens nested among the sympatric P. balfouri sensu lato specimens. The Cape Peninsula specimens were sister to specimens from Jonkershoek site 1, Kogelberg and Simonsberg. Two Boland clades were retrieved, comprising Du Toit's Kloof, Bain's Kloof and Mitchell's Pass and sister (in clade 4) to specimens from the Boland and adjacent Hottentots Holland Mountains in clade 5. These results revealed complex biogeographic patterning in the P. balfouri sensu lato species complex. The presence of sympatric, yet genetically discrete species pairs at six of the sample localities ( Du Toit's Kloof, Simonsberg, Jonkershoek sites 1 and 2, Kogelberg and Landroskop) suggests that there is reproductive isolation between the lineages. Divergence time estimations suggest a Miocene/ Pliocene/ Pleistocene cladogenesis. A taxonomic revision of the P. balfouri sensu lato species complex was undertaken to stabilize the taxonomy. P. clavigera is monophyletic and retained for the southern Cape specimens, P. balfouri sensu stricto is now confined to the Cape Peninsula and adjacent interior, while P. stelliporata is regarded as a junior synonym of the latter taxon, P. alba is endemic to the Wynberg Cave systems on the Cape Peninsula.
