Abstract

Real-world emissions of particulate matter (PM) and smoke opacity were studied for an older-model diesel pickup truck during four types of driving tests, namely fixed-point test, snap-acceleration test, road test, and hill road test (uphill/downhill). A portable emissions measurement system (PEMS) and an opacimeter were used to measure real-time concentrations of PM and smoke opacity, respectively, and simultaneously. Correlation analysis showed a significant positive association between PM and opacity, suggesting the feasibility of using an opacimeter to estimate PM mass emissions from diesel vehicles. Additionally, regression analyses were performed to evaluate the relationship between opacity and PM mass concentration. The results of this study indicate that PM emission concentrations from older-model diesel vehicles can be estimated with a reasonable accuracy by using a smoke opacimeter, which is a relatively simple and cost-effective method of emission testing, as an alternative to sophisticated PM measurement instruments. Abstract

This paper presented a procedure for airbag folding for the application in occupant safety studies and analysed the influence of different airbag folding patterns on the occupant severity in frontal impact. Airbags were folded in two patterns: zig-zag and top-roll, using two folding techniques: Initial Metric Method and Explicit Folding. The explicit folding was found to be more expensive in terms of preparation time. However, this approach provided more control over the whole folding process. The Initial Metric Method was more robust, however, it's hard to apply for complex folding patterns. Deployments of airbags were validated against experimental data of pendulum tests. Those airbag models were applied to 2006 Ford F250 pickup truck. This vehicle was used for simulations of frontal vehicle impact where the 50th male Hybrid III crash test dummy was an occupant. Results of this simulation were compared with an actual test with a similar vehicle, under the same impact conditions. Results showed the head and chest accelerations were lower for top-roll folded airbag cases, however neck normal forces were higher compared to zig-zag folded airbag. The internal pressure in the early stage of deployment was 33% higher for the top-roll folded airbags. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Medium trucks play a crucial role in the logistics industry, notably in terms of size flexibility, which makes them very dependable for moving a variety of logistics commodities. The rapid mobility and abundance of medium trucks are frequently linked to their involvement in accidents. With a percentage of 37% of all freight vehicles involved in accidents in Yogyakarta province, truck accidents come in second place to incidents involving pickup trucks. The causes of freight vehicles accidents have been thoroughly investigated by earlier researchers. There is, however, a dearth of empirical research that considers freight vehicles periodic inspections results as a cause of accidents, particularly in medium trucks. The Partial Least Square Path Modeling (PLS-PM) method was used to test the hypothesis, and the findings indicate that factors such as the age of medium truck drivers, the length of regular medium truck test intervals, the condition of the road, and the timing of accidents in relation to changes in traffic flow conditions all significantly affect severity of accidents involving medium trucks. Stakeholders are anticipated to take the findings into account when formulating policies, particularly those that pertain to the operation of medium trucks, as a result of the results of the analysis accidents contributing of factors in the Yogyakarta Province. The test vehicle models were first validated using full-scale physical crash tests conducted on a two-bar metal bridge using a sedan and a pickup truck with similar overall physical properties and sizes to their respective vehicles used in the simulations. The validated vehicular models were then used to evaluate the crash performance of the TMBR using MASH evaluation criteria for structural adequacy, occupant risk, and post-impact trajectory. The TMBR met all MASH TL-2 requirements but failed to meet the MASH TL-3 Criteria H and N requirements when impacted by the sedan. The TMBR was also evaluated under in-service conditions (behind a 1.52 m wide sidewalk) and impacted by the sedan under MASH TL-3 conditions. The simulation results showed that the TMBR behind a sidewalk met all safety requirements except for the occupant impact velocity in the longitudinal direction, which exceeded the MASH limit by 3.93%. Abstract

This paper investigates the factors influencing the severity of driver injuries in single-vehicle speeding-related crashes, by comparing different driver age groups. This study employed a random threshold random parameter hierarchical ordered probit model and analysed crash data from Thailand between 2012 and 2017. The findings showed that young drivers face a heightened fatality risk when speeding in passenger cars or pickup trucks, hinting at the role of inexperience and risk-taking behaviours. Old drivers exhibit an increased fatality risk when speeding, especially in rainy conditions, on flush median roads, and during evening peak hours, attributed to reduced reaction times and vulnerability to adverse weather. Both young and elderly drivers face escalated fatality risks when speeding on road segments lacking guardrails during adverse weather, with older drivers being particularly vulnerable in rainy conditions. All age groups show an elevated fatality risk when speeding on barrier median roads, underscoring the significant role of speeding, which increases crash impact and limits margins of error and manoeuvrability, thereby highlighting the need for safety measures focusing on driver behaviour. Abstract

Concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) columns have been widely used in multi-story and high-rise frame structures. During the service period, they may suffer vehicle impact due to traffic accidents or terrorist attacks. This paper numerically evaluates the performance of CFST columns under vehicle impact and investigates the effects of carbon FRP (CFRP) wrapping arrangements on performance improvement of the columns. Before that, a numerical model was developed to simulate the responses of CFST columns without and with FRP wrapping under vehicle impact and post-impact axial compression, and then calibrated by reported tests. Evaluation results show that the performance of CSFT columns under vehicle impact is divided into five levels, i.e., no repair required, rapid repair required, minor repair needed, major repair needed, and replacement needed. The performance level decreases with the increase in the vehicle weight or speed and increases with the increase in the column diameter or steel tube thickness. The column height has little effects on the performance level. A higher axial load ratio, e.g., 0.5, might reduce the performance level. Besides, a CFST column tends to fail in flexure mode when hit by F800 medium truck, while it may fail in flexure & shear mode when hit by C2500 pickup truck. Investigation results indicate that FRP wrapping with each layer orientation of 90° (i.e., in the longitudinal direction) and 0° (i.e., in the hoop direction) present the best performance improvement for a CFST column possibly undergoing flexure & shear and flexure failure, respectively. The increase of the number of FRP layers effectively improves the performance levels of CFST columns but the excessive demand may be not economical. Abstract

Geo-mat system is considered as an alternative to a flexible or rigid pavement that can be used for fire lanes, parking areas, or roadway shoulders for cars, pickup trucks, utility/delivery trucks, and fire trucks. Also, it can be used to reduce the thickness of the base course in unpaved roads. In this investigation, six cyclic loading tests were conducted to assess the efficacy of the geo-mat system on weak to intermediate subgrade layers, characterized by California Bearing Ratios (CBR) of 2%, 3%, and 4%. Control sections, consisting of a 300-mm thick base course over subgrade layers with CBR values of 2% or 4%, were compared against the test sections comprising a geo-mat system placed atop aggregates of varied thickness (150 or 50 mm) on a geotextile layer over the same subgrade layers. Each test section underwent cyclic loading, progressively increasing from 17.8 to 71.2 kN using a 300-mm diameter steel plate. The results demonstrate that the geo-mat system, particularly when placed over a 150 mm-thick aggregate base, exhibited comparable or superior performance to the control sections with a 300 mm thickness, especially under substantial cyclic loading. This was evidenced by the reduced permanent deformations beneath the loading plate and a wider load distribution. The increase of the subgrade CBR value reduced the permanent deformation significantly. When the intermediate subgrade with a 4% CBR was used, the geo-mat system played a more important role than the aggregate base and the base thickness had a minor effect on the performance. Abstract

This paper investigates the failure mechanism of the rear drive shaft in a modified pickup truck which had operated for about 3000 km. The investigation included macroscopic and microscopic evaluation to document the morphologies of the fracture surface, measurement of the material composition, metallographic preparation and examination, mechanical testing, and finite element modelling and calculations. The results obtained suggest that rotation-bending fatigue was the primary cause of the drive shaft failure. The crack initiation is located in the root of the machined threads on the drive shaft surface and expanded along the side of the machining line surface. The main cause of fatigue cracks is attributable to a high stress concentration owing to a large unilateral bending impact under overload. Meanwhile, the bidirectional torsional force also produces a higher stress concentration and thus accelerates the fatigue crack to expand radially along the surface. Furthermore, the hardness of the central section of the drive shaft was marginally below standard. This deficiency results in harm to the bearings and other mechanical components, as well as expediting the enlargement of cracks. Finite element analysis revealed significant contact stress between the bearing and drive shaft, with stress levels exceeding the fatigue limit stress of the parent material. Abstract

Until now, various studies have been conducted on the drag coefficient of pickup trucks, but little research has been conducted on the effect of the front overhang length and roof design on the drag coefficient. In this study, the flow characteristics and drag coefficients of 54 models with different front overhang lengths, roof angles, and angular positions were compared using a computational fluid dynamics code to reduce the drag coefficient of an eco-friendly pickup truck. Reducing the aerodynamic drag of electric vehicles can improve battery utilization and improve the overall performance of the powertrain, so it is important to analyze and optimize geometric design steps to improve drag reduction strategies. The three-dimensional steady-state analysis model used in this study was verified by comparing the model results with experimental values reported in previous studies. In addition, the impacts of four factors on the drag coefficient were analyzed to develop an optimal design that takes into account smaller and better characteristics. The drag coefficient was reduced by 10.3% compared to that of the base model. Based on the numerical analysis of all models to be applied to pickup truck design, a correlation of the drag coefficient with the shape was proposed, showing a low error range of +1.9% to −1.74%. Abstract

This study presents the evaluation of safety performance of the blocked-out W-Beam guardrail crash barrier system designed as per the 'Guidelines for traffic safety barriers' published by Indian Road Congress (IRC:119-2015). A finite element model of the W-Beam guardrail was developed in Hyper-Mesh and the simulation of the crash analysis was performed in LS-Dyna. Results from the simulation were used to study the compliance of the barrier with the test acceptance criteria of the NCHRP 350 report for containment level TL-3 as mentioned in the IRC: 119-2015. Finite element models of 820c passenger car and 2000p pickup truck developed by NCAC were imported to the guardrail model for crash simulation according to the test designation 3-10 and 3-11. As per the acceptance criteria of the NCHRP report 350 for containment level TL-3, the obtained simulation results were examined to verify the compliance and performance of the guardrail. It was concluded that the crash barrier was compliant with test 3-10 but not with 3-11. Further, simulations for TL-1 (test 1-11) were also conducted since the barrier failed to meet the NCHRP criteria for pickup truck impacting at 100 km/h.
