Wearing face masks is the best way to stop the spread of respiratory infections. However, if masks are not sterilized, changing them too frequently can actually increase the risk of cross‐contamination. Herein, the construction of an antipathogen photocatalytic mask with carbon vacancy‐modified carbon nitride nanosheets (g‐C3N4‐VC Ns) coated on the non‐woven fabrics of the out layer of the mask, offering effective and long‐term protection against damaging pathogens when exposed to light is reported. The introduced carbon vacancies are found capable of creating energy‐disordered sites and inducing energetic electric force to overcome the Coulomb interactions between electron‐hole pairs, thus promoting the electron‐hole separation to achieve a high generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Thanks to its high activity in generating ROS upon exposure to light, the as‐prepared photocatalytic mask shows high pathogen sterilization performance. This, in turn, prolongs the mask's protective lifetime, decreases the need for regular replacement, and decreases medical waste production. This study examines the impact of canopy density, side wind speed, nozzle tilt angle, and droplet size on droplet penetration during plant protection spraying operations. Experiments conducted in citrus orchards evaluated how side wind speed and nozzle tilt angle influence droplet penetration across various canopy densities. A Phase Doppler Analyzer (PDA) was used to assess droplet size variations under different nozzle tilt angles and side wind speeds, yielding a multiple linear regression equation (R2 = 0.866) that links nozzle tilt angle and side wind speed with droplet size. Results showed that droplet size decreases with increasing nozzle tilt angle at a constant crosswind speed. Further experiments investigated the effects of droplet size and canopy leaf area density on droplet penetration, involving three canopy leaf area densities, four wind speeds, and six nozzle tilt angles. Droplet deposition and canopy coverage were measured under various spraying parameters, with conventional operations (0° nozzle tilt and orthogonal wind speeds) serving as controls. The study found that adjusting nozzle tilt angle and wind speed enhances droplet penetration in different canopy structures. Optimal parameters varied with leaf area density (LAD): an 18° tilt angle and 3 m/s wind speed for a LAD of 5.94 m3/m3, a 45° tilt angle and 2 m/s wind speed for a LAD of 8.47m2/m3, and a 36° tilt angle and 3 m/s wind speed for a LAD of 11.12m2/m3. At 1 m/s, droplet deposition followed a downward parabolic trend with changes in nozzle tilt angle, whereas at 2 m/s, deposition followed an upward parabolic trend. At a side wind speed of 3 m/s, droplet deposition remained unchanged with nozzle tilt angle but decreased with increasing canopy density. Nonlinear regression analysis indicated that leaf area density had a greater impact on deposition differences than droplet size, with droplet penetration decreasing as leaf area density increased. This study provides a reference for enhancing fog droplet penetration techniques in plant protection operations, offering practical guidelines for optimizing spraying conditions and improving pesticide use efficiency in different canopy structures. Therapeutic hypothermia is the standard treatment for hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE), but despite its widespread use, the rates of mortality and neurodevelopmental impairment for moderate to severe HIE remain around 30%. Methylxanthines, such as caffeine and aminophylline, have potential neuroprotective effects in the setting of hypoxic-ischemic injury. However, data on the safety and efficacy of methylxanthines in the setting of therapeutic hypothermia for HIE are limited. This retrospective multicenter study examined in-hospital outcomes in 52 infants with HIE receiving methylxanthines and therapeutic hypothermia. The frequency of mortality and in-hospital morbidities were similar to those of infants enrolled in clinical trials undergoing therapeutic hypothermia without adjunctive therapies. Clinical trials of methylxanthines for neuroprotection in HIE are needed to determine safety and efficacy and should explore optimal dosing and timing of methylxanthine administration. Traditional particle swarm optimization(PSO) is prone to getting stuck in local optima and low search ability for energy consumption optimal solutions when planning plant protection operation paths. The study focuses on improving the PSO algorithm in order to improve the efficiency of crop protection drone operations and reduce drone losses. The study proposes an adjacent competition (AC) algorithm for crop protection operation path planning based on a crop protection UAV model in order to solve the problem of poor effectiveness of traditional particle swarm optimization algorithms applied to UAV plant protection operations. The adjacent competition algorithm ensures that the total distance of crop protection UAV operations is constant, provides prior knowledge of the search direction, and ensures that special points are not missed, preventing the algorithm from getting stuck in local optimal solutions: Firstly, all particles initialize the homework distance range to prevent extreme situations where the single homework distance is too long or too short. Secondly, each drone is randomly assigned the operating distance for each particle within the operating range. Finally, adjacent particles compete with each other for the operating distance, indirectly changing the operating distance of each flight and searching for the optimal path. The study used Matlab to conduct algorithm simulation verification on a simulated plant protection site of 420 m×200 m. Traditional particle swarm optimization algorithm often gets stuck in local optima and the final planning results fluctuate greatly, while the adjacent competition algorithm obtains the optimal energy consumption solution 9 times out of 10 planning iterations, and the planning energy consumption of non-optimal solutions is similar to the optimal energy consumption, still better than all planning results of the traditional particle swarm algorithm, proving that the neighboring contention algorithm has stronger searchability. The results show that traditional particle swarm optimization algorithms often got stuck in local optima and increased energy consumption by 16.16% to 38.14% compared to neighboring contention algorithms in 10 rounds of path planning. This indicated that the energy consumption of the adjacent competition algorithm proposed in this study for planning results is much lower than that of the traditional particle swarm optimization algorithm, and the algorithm has stronger search capabilities. This study used the RflySim simulation platform to build a crop protection drone model and a 420 m×200 m work site in order to compare the simulated tracking results of the traditional particle swarm optimization algorithm and adjacent competition algorithm in a virtual environment. The results show that the energy consumption of adjacent competition algorithm planning results is reduced by 25.15% compared to the traditional particle swarm algorithm. This study conducted actual flight tests using the drone M300 at a 420 m×200 m work site to validate the practicality of the algorithm. Actual flight experiments have shown that the energy consumption of adjacent contention algorithm planning results is reduced by 34.48% compared to traditional particle swarm optimization algorithms, making it more suitable for multiple crop protection operations. In actual experiments, the return points of multiple UAVs in the adjacent contention algorithm are closer to the supply point, the distance of departure and return is shorter, and the ineffective energy consumption is lower compared with the traditional particle swarm optimization algorithm, indicating that its planning is more reasonable. Adjacent particles indirectly change the distance of each operation by competing for each other's operation distance, effectively improving the convergence speed of the algorithm, preventing the algorithm from getting stuck in local optima, and improving the efficiency of multiple crop protection operations with a single drone. The genome of tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) can encode various proteins, including RdRp, NSm, NSs, Gc, Gn, and N. Existing research primarily focuses on plant (tomato and chili pepper) resistance to TSWV mediated by resistance genes (Sw-5b and Tsw). Furthermore, the inhibitory effects of agents on the TSWV N proteins have been investigated. TSWV proteins have the potential to be used as molecular targets for pharmaceutical agents, however, the mechanism of action between TSWV proteins and pharmaceutical agents has not been systematically and comprehensively reported. This study presents a detailed analysis of the three-dimensional structures of resolved TSWV proteins and predicts the structures of four unresolved TSWV proteins using AlphaFold2 modeling. It also summarizes the advancement and application of TSWV resistance genes and TSWV inhibitors in plant protection. The potential molecular mechanisms of ningnanmycin, moroxydine, and ribavirin on TSWV proteins were analyzed, along with their possible sites of action. Pullulan can not only provide a source of organic carbon but also has excellent properties. However, current research is mostly limited to the physical properties of the high-molecular-weight components of pullulan, and little is known about the application of its low-molecular-weight components. This study was designed to explore the impact of presoaking of radish seeds in a pullulan solution on seed germination and subsequent seedling growth under salt stress conditions. Pullulan soaking was found to enhance the germination rates of radish seeds subjected to salt stress, while also enhancing the aboveground growth of radish seedlings. Pullulan soaking resulted in increases in chlorophyll, soluble protein, and soluble sugar concentrations in the leaves of these seedlings, together with greater peroxidase activity and root activity as well as decreases in Na+ and malondialdehyde concentrations. Blue honeysuckle, also named as haskap or honeyberry, an emerging fruit worldwide, with the species being Lonicera L., originating from the north hemisphere, exhibits high genetic heterogeneity and abundant genetic variation in fruit and leaf traits. However, there are few papers on the research progress of blue honeysuckle breeding and cultivars. The International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV) is an effective plant variety protection system, and blue honeysuckle cultivars from different countries and regions are registered in the UPOV database. In this review, we summarized the origin, domestication and germplasm collection, breeding categories and supporting techniques of blue honeysuckle, and the information on registered blue honeysuckle cultivars was analysed based on the UPOV database. Wild rocket downy mildew (DM), caused by oomycete Hyaloperonospora sp., is a widely spread disease reducing crop production and quality. New productive wild rocket varieties resistant to DM are crucial to control disease and ensure high quality leaves. A histological characterization of Hyaloperonospora sp. infection was performed in 11 wild rocket (Diplotaxis tenuifolia) accessions with contrasting DM responses (R, resistant; PR, partially resistant; S, susceptible). Samples of infected cotyledons, first and second leaves of 14‐day‐old seedlings were collected at 3, 6, 9, 21 and 24 h post‐inoculation (hpi) and 7 days post‐inoculation (dpi) and stained for appressoria and haustoria observation and tissue necrosis evaluation. Occurrence of appressoria on host surfaces was higher in leaves compared with cotyledons but unrelated with DM resistance response. Haustoria growth in mycelium was delayed in R accessions from 3 hpi, and signs of cell hypersensitivity reaction were observed at 9 hpi. At 24 hpi, necrotic spots limited pathogen growth in resistant accessions, whilst mycelium invaded larger mesophyll areas and produced more haustoria in susceptible ones. At 7 dpi, sporulation was heavy in S, restricted to droplet deposition sites in PR, and did not occur in R hosts. A rapid response of R accessions resulted in slower mycelium growth and longer infection periods. These traits have important agronomic value and should be considered in germplasm selection for breeding programmes aimed at crop protection. The diversity of transmission modes and the heterogeneity of populations in the transmission of infectious diseases are issues that have to be faced in the current disease protection. In this paper, an infectious disease model incorporating age structure and horizontal and environmental spread, along with asymptomatic infection, is proposed to describe diversification of disease transmission routes and population heterogeneity. The expression of the basic reproduction number R0$$ {\mathcal{R}}_0 $$ is derived by a linear approximation method, and it is concluded that if R0<1$$ {\mathcal{R}}_0<1 $$, the disease‐free steady state is globally asymptotically stable; if R0>1$$ {\mathcal{R}}_0>1 $$, the model has a unique endemic steady state which is locally asymptotically stable under certain conditions. Further, the uniform persistence of disease is proved using the persistence theory of the infinite‐dimensional dynamical system when R0>1$$ {\mathcal{R}}_0>1 $$. In additional, the issue of optimal control problem according to this model is investigated, and the representation of optimal control with respect to state variables and adjoint variables is obtained which also imply the existence and uniqueness of optimal control. In the context of increasing global food demand and the urgent need for production processes optimization, plant protection products play a key role in safeguarding crops from insects, pests, and fungi, responsible of plant diseases proliferation and yield losses. Despite the inaccurate distribution of conventional aerial spraying performed by airplanes and helicopters, Unmanned Aerial Spraying Systems (UASSs) offer low health risks and operational cost solutions, preserving crops and soil from physical damage. This study explores the impact of UASS flight height (2 m and 2.5 m above ground level), speed (1 m s−1 and 1.5 m s−1), and position (over the canopy and the inter-row) on vineyard aerial spraying efficiency by analysing Water Sensitive Papers droplet coverage, density, and Number Median Diameter using a MATLAB script. Flight position factor, more than others, influenced the application results. The specific configuration of 2 m altitude, 1.5 m s−1 cruising speed, and inter-row positioning yielded the best results in terms of canopy coverage, minimizing off-target and ground dispersion, and represented the best setting to facilitate droplets penetration, reaching the lowest parts generally more affected from disease. Further research is needed to assess UASS aerial PPP distribution effectiveness and environmental impact in agriculture, crucial for technology implementation, especially in countries where aerial treatments are not yet permitted. The genus Clavibacter (family Microbacteriaceae) includes gram‐positive actinobacterial species infecting diverse agricultural crops such as alfalfa, maize, pepper, potato, tomato and wheat. Clavibacter tessellarius, causing bacterial mosaic of wheat, was reported for the first time in 1976 in Nebraska (United States). Since then, the pathogen was thought to be restricted to North America (Canada and the United States). While bacterial strains suspected to be C. tessellarius have occasionally been isolated from wheat samples outside North America, occurrence of the pathogen in the Old World has not yet been confirmed by the plant protection authorities. In spring 2020 (January to May) dozens of wheat fields with young plants showing leaf chlorosis and mild mosaic symptoms were surveyed and sampled in southern Iran. Among 192 surveyed wheat fields, gram‐positive, orange‐pigmented actinobacterial strains were isolated from samples of 53 fields. Altogether, 61 bacterial strains were identified as C. tessellarius based on the phenotypic features, PCR‐based molecular tests and pathogenicity assays. Multilocus sequence analysis of five housekeeping genes (atpD, dnaK, gyrB, ppk and rpoB) using 10 representative strains from diverse geographic areas in southern Iran confirmed the phylogenetic status of the strains within C. tessellarius. Our data indicate that the bacterial mosaic pathogen occurs in four southern Iranian provinces including Bushehr, Fars, Kerman and Khuzestan. Thus, occurrence of C. tessellarius outside North America is confirmed. Periderm is a well‐known structural feature with vital roles in protection of inner plant tissues and wound healing. Despite its importance to plant survival, knowledge of periderm occurrences outside the seed plants is limited and the evolutionary origins of periderm remain poorly explored. Here, we review the current knowledge of the taxonomic distribution of periderm in its two main forms – canonical periderm (periderm formed as a typical ontogenetic stage) and wound periderm (periderm produced as a self‐repair mechanism) – with a focus on major plant lineages, living and extinct. We supplement the published occurrences with data based on our own observations and experiments. This updated body of data reveals that the distribution of wound periderm is more widespread taxonomically than previously recognized and some living and extinct groups are capable of producing wound periderm, despite canonical periderm being absent from their normal developmental program. A critical review of canonical and wound periderms in extant and fossil lineages indicates that not all periderms are created equal. Their organisation is widely variable and the differences can be characterised in terms of variations in three structural features: (i) the consistency in orientation of periclinal walls within individual files of periderm cells; (ii) the lateral coordination of periclinal walls between adjacent cell files; and (iii) whether a cambial layer and conspicuous layering of inward and outward derivatives can be distinguished. Using a new system of scoring periderm structure based on these criteria, we characterise the level of organisation of canonical and wound periderms in different lineages. Looking at periderms through the lens provided by their level of organisation reveals that the traditional image of periderm as a single generalised feature, is best viewed as a continuum of structural configurations that are all predicated by the same basic process (periclinal divisions), but can fall anywhere between very loosely organized (diffuse periclinal growth) to very tightly coordinated (organized periclinal growth). Overall, wound periderms in both seed plants and seed‐free plants have lower degrees of organisation than canonical periderms, which may be due to their initiation in response to inherently disruptive traumatic events. Wound and canonical periderms of seed plants have higher degrees of organisation than those of seed‐free plants, possibly due to co‐option of the programs responsible for organizing their vascular cambial growth. Given the importance of wound periderm to plant survival, its widespread taxonomic distribution, and its early occurrence in the fossil record, we hypothesise that wound periderm may have had a single origin in euphyllophytes and canonical periderm may have originated separately in different lineages by co‐option of the basic regulatory toolkit of wound periderm formation. In one evolutionary scenario, wound periderm regulators activated initially by tissue tearing due to tensional stresses elicited by woody growth underwent heterochronic change that switched their activation trigger from tissue tearing to the tensional stresses that precede it, with corresponding changes in the signalling that triggered the regulatory cascade of periderm development from tearing‐induced signals to signalling induced by tension in cells. Fungicide resistance to crop protection products is a critical sustainability issue in modern agriculture that requires constant monitoring of the field situation considering different environmental conditions and agricultural practices. Regulation strategies based on resistance risk ranking of both pathogen and active compound, underpinned by fast and broad field monitoring, shall result in recommendations for suitable practices with the aim to stabilize or even to restore the sensitivity situation. Alternating and mixing various products according to their modes of action belong to the most common and the most efficient mitigation methods. Though, these resistance management measures can be implemented best when precise knowledge of both the molecular target and the cell biology of the pathogen as well as of the resistance mechanism is acknowledged. To this end, we have investigated the molecular target and cellular effects of fluopicolide, one of the most effective Oomyceticides in the market. By combining data of genomic analysis of resistant field isolates of Plasmopara viticola and Phytophthora infestans with UV-mutagenized strains of P. infestans, we identified the enzyme vacuolar H+-ATPase as the target protein. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are low molecular weight molecules that tend to evaporate easily at room temperature because of their low boiling points. VOCs are emitted by all organisms; therefore, inter- and intra-kingdom interactions have been established, which are fundamental to the structuring of life on our planet. One of the most studied interactions through VOCs is between microorganism VOCs (mVOCs) and plants, including those of agricultural interest. The mVOC interactions generate various advantages for plants, ranging from promoting growth to the activation of defense pathways triggered by salicylic acid (systemic acquired resistance) and jasmonic acid (induced systemic resistance) to protect them against phytopathogens. Additionally, mVOCs directly inhibit the growth of phytopathogens, thereby providing indirect protection to plants. Among the current agricultural problems is the extensive use of chemicals, such as fertilizers, intended to combat production loss, and pesticides to combat phytopathogen infection. This causes problems in food safety and environmental pollution. Therefore, to overcome this problem, it is important to identify alternatives that do not generate environmental impacts, such as the application of mVOCs. Controlled dispersal of microfliers over large‐scale areas is crucial for both civil and agricultural applications. Until now, the study of flying soft actuators is limited by the complexity of the motion involved and with control when miniaturized to a micro‐scale. Drawing inspiration from the dynamics of dandelion seed spread, the study proposes a novel design for a flying soft actuator comprising Ti3C2Tx MXene and polyethylene (PE), which exhibits sensitive responses to various stimuli, including humidity, temperature, applied voltage, infrared light, and selective volatile organic compounds, leading to significant deformation at a rapid rate (up to 81.82°/s). An artificial seed capable of wind‐assisted flight is further fabricated by integrating a MXene/PE actuator with fiberglass. When exposed to light, the artificial seed opens its fiberglass pappus during descent, increasing resistance and thereby prolonging falling time by an impressive 83%. Moreover, the artificial seed demonstrates self‐sensing, i.e., changes in resistance caused by humidity and infrared light, which can be attributed to the absorption and desorption of water molecules within MXene layers. This enhanced falling time enables a wider dispersal range and precise control, making it highly promising for environmental monitoring, automated large‐scale sensor deployments, and large‐scale seed sowing for endangered plants species protection. All land plants—the embryophytes—produce multicellular embryos, as do other multicellular organisms, such as brown algae and animals. A unique characteristic of plant embryos is their immobile and confined nature. Their embedding in maternal tissues may offer protection from the environment, but also physically constrains development. Across the different land plants, a huge discrepancy is present between their reproductive structures whilst leading to similarly complex embryos. Therefore, we review the roles that maternal tissues play in the control of embryogenesis across land plants. These nurturing, constraining, and protective roles include both direct and indirect effects. In this review, we explore how the maternal surroundings affect embryogenesis and which chemical and mechanical barriers are in place. Background: Cardiac arrest is a common and devastating emergency of both the heart and brain. More than 380,000 patients suffer out-of-hospital cardiac arrest annually in the USA. Induced cooling of comatose patients markedly improved neurological and functional outcomes in pivotal randomized clinical trials, but the optimal duration of therapeutic hypothermia has not yet been established. Methods: This study is a multi-center randomized, response-adaptive, duration (dose) finding, comparative effectiveness clinical trial with blinded outcome assessment. We investigate two populations of adult comatose survivors of cardiac arrest to ascertain the shortest duration of cooling that provides the maximum treatment effect. The design is based on a statistical model of response as defined by the primary endpoint, a weighted 90-day mRS (modified Rankin Scale, a measure of neurologic disability), across the treatment arms. Subjects will initially be equally randomized between 12, 24, and 48 h of therapeutic cooling. After the first 200 subjects have been randomized, additional treatment arms between 12 and 48 h will be opened and patients will be allocated, within each initial cardiac rhythm type (shockable or non-shockable), by response adaptive randomization. As the trial continues, shorter and longer duration arms may be opened. A maximum sample size of 1800 subjects is proposed. Secondary objectives are to characterize: the overall safety and adverse events associated with duration of cooling, the effect on neuropsychological outcomes, and the effect on patient-reported quality of life measures. Discussion: In vitro and in vivo studies have shown the neuroprotective effects of therapeutic hypothermia for cardiac arrest. We hypothesize that longer durations of cooling may improve either the proportion of patients that attain a good neurological recovery or may result in better recovery among the proportion already categorized as having a good outcome. If the treatment effect of cooling is increasing across duration, for at least some set of durations, then this provides evidence of the efficacy of cooling itself versus normothermia, even in the absence of a normothermia control arm, confirming previous RCTs for OHCA survivors of shockable rhythms and provides the first prospective controlled evidence of efficacy in those without initial shockable rhythms. The bacterial blight of wheat is an important global disease causing a significant decline in crop yield. Nanotechnology offers a potential solution for managing plant diseases. Therefore, this research aimed to investigate the effectiveness of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in controlling bacterial blight in 27 locally grown wheat cultivars. The study examined the impact of AgNPs at three distinct time points: 1, 3, and 5 days after the onset of the disease. Biochemical assay revealed that one day after applying the disease stress, the Inia cultivar had the highest amount of soluble protein (55.60 μg.g−1FW) content in the treatment without AgNPs. The Azadi cultivar, without AgNPs treatment, had the lowest amount of soluble protein content (15.71 μg.g−1FW). The Tabasi cultivar had the highest activity of the superoxide dismutase (SOD) (61.62 mM.g−1FW) with the combination treatment of AgNPs. On the other hand, the Karchia cultivar had the lowest SOD activity (0.6 mM.g−1FW) in the treatment of disease without AgNPs. Furthermore, three days after the application of stress, the Mahdavi cultivar had the highest amount of soluble protein content (54.16 μg.g−1FW) in the treatment of disease without AgNPs. The Niknejad cultivar had the highest activity of the SOD (74.15 mM.g−1FW) with the combined treatment of the disease without AgNPs. The Kavir cultivar had the lowest SOD activity (1.95 mM.g−1FW) and the lowest peroxidase (POX) activity (0.241 mM g−1FW min−1) in the treatment of the disease with AgNPs. Five days after exposure to stress, the Mahooti cultivar had the highest SOD activity (88.12 mM.g−1FW) with the combined treatment of the disease with AgNPs, and the Karchia cultivar had the lowest SOD activity (2.39 mM.g−1FW) in the treatment of the disease with AgNPs. This article reports the design and experiment of a novel air-assisted nozzle for pesticide application in orchard. A novel air-assisted nozzle was designed based on the transverse jet atomization pattern. This article conducted the performance and deposition experiments and established the mathematical model of volume median diameter (D50) and liquid flow rate with the nozzle design parameters. The D50 of this air-assisted nozzle ranged from 52.45 mmto 113.67 mm, and the liquid flow rate ranged from 142.6 ml/min to 1,607.8 ml/min within the designed conditions. These performances meet the low-volume and ultra-low-volume pesticide application in orchard. The droplet deposition experiment results demonstrated that the droplet coverage distribution in different layers and columns is relatively uniform, and the predicted value of spray penetration (SP) numbers SPiA, SPiB, and SPiC (i =1,2,and3)are approximately 70%, 60%, and 70%, respectively. The droplet deposits on the foliage of the canopy (inside and outside) uniformly bring benefit for plant protection and pesticide saving. Compared with the traditional air-assisted nozzle that adopts a coaxial flow atomization pattern, the atomization efficiency of this air-assisted nozzle is higher. Moreover, the nozzle air pressure and liquid flow rate are considerably lower and greater than the traditional air-assisted nozzle, and these results proved that this air-assisted nozzle has great potential in orchard pesticide application. The relationship between the D50 and nozzle liquid pressure of this air-assisted nozzle differs from that of traditional air-assisted nozzles due to the atomization pattern and process. The Drosophilid family comprises over 4000 species, with several species posing potential threats to agriculture, as identified by the European and Mediterranean Plant Protection Organisation (EPPO). Among these species, Drosophila suzukii, Zaprionus tuberculatus and Z. indianus have received attention due to their geographic expansion and potential risks to crops. This research aims to consolidate global data on Z. tuberculatus hosts, with a specific focus on this species' presence in Brazil's Federal District, its first reported location in the Americas. Reviewing existing literature and conducting fieldwork, we identified 61 plant species from 25 botanical families as potential hosts for Z. tuberculatus worldwide, from which 23 species are new hosts. It was noted that Z. tuberculatus had a high density on certain fruits, raising concerns about its potential as a pest. The presence of Z. tuberculatus alongside other pest species, such as Z. indianus and Drosophila suzukii, highlights the complexity of invasive species' interactions and their ecological impacts. These findings emphasize the need for standardized methodologies to evaluate invasive drosophilids' ecological and economic implications, enabling informed management strategies to mitigate their adverse effects on agriculture and ecosystems. Objectives: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of non-steroid mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists (ns-MRAs) and sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2is) in patients with diabetic kidney disease (DKD). Methods: Systematic literature searches were performed using PubMed, Embase and Web of Science encompassing inception until January 20, 2024. Randomized control trials (RCTs) comparing ns-MRAs and SGLT2is in DKD were selected. The efficacy outcomes of interest included kidney-specific composite outcome, cardiovascular (CV)-specific composite outcome, end-stage kidney disease (ESKD), and overall mortality. We also investigated safety outcomes, including acute kidney injury (AKI) and hyperkalemia. Results: A total of 10 randomized clinical trials with 35,786 patients applying various treatments were included. SGLT2is (SUCRA 99.84%) have potential superiority in kidney protection. SGLT2is (RR 1.41, 95%CI 1.26 to 1.57) and ns-MRAs (RR 1.17, 95% CI 1.08 to 1.27) were associated with significantly lower kidney-specific composite outcome than the placebo. Regarding the reduction in CV-specific composite outcome and ESKD, SGLT2is (SUCRA 91.61%; 91.38%) have potential superiority in playing cardiorenal protection. Concerning the CV-specific composite outcome (RR 1.27, 95%CI 1.09 to 1.43) and ESKD (RR 1.43, 95% CI 1.20 to 1.72), SGLT2is significantly reduced the risks compared to placebo. Regarding the reduction in overall mortality, SGLT2is (SUCRA 83.03%) have potential superiority in postponing mortality. Concerning the overall mortality, SGLT2is have comparable effects (RR 1.27, 95%CI 1.09 to 1.43) with placebo to reduce the risk of overall mortality compared to placebo. For AKI reduction, ns-MRAs (SUCRA 63.58%) have potential superiority. SGLT2is have comparable effects (RR 1.24, 95%CI 1.05 to 1.46) with placebo to reduce the risk of AKI. Peptides are important regulators that participate in the modulation of almost every physiological event in plants, including defense. Recently, many of these peptides have been described as defense elicitors, termed phytocytokines, that are released upon pest or pathogen attack, triggering an amplification of plant defenses. However, little is known about peptides sensing and inducing resistance activities in heterologous plants. In the present study, exogenous peptides from solanaceous species, Systemins and HypSys, are sensed and induce resistance to the necrotrophic fungus Plectosphaerella cucumerina in the taxonomically distant species Arabidopsis thaliana. Surprisingly, other peptides from closer taxonomic clades have very little or no effect on plant protection. In vitro bioassays showed that the studied peptides do not have direct antifungal activities, suggesting that they protect the plant through the promotion of the plant immune system. Interestingly, tomato Systemin was able to induce resistance at very low concentrations (0.1 and 1 nM) and displays a maximum threshold being ineffective above at higher concentrations. Here, we show evidence of the possible involvement of the JA-signaling pathway in the Systemin-Induced Resistance (Sys-IR) in Arabidopsis. Additionally, Systemin treated plants display enhanced BAK1 and BIK1 gene expression following infection as well as increased production of ROS after PAMP treatment suggesting that Systemin sensitizes Arabidopsis perception to pathogens and PAMPs. Implementing sustainable crop protection practices is crucial to protect global harvests and ensure high-quality food supplies. While priming is an established method in seed production for the fortification of plants against various stresses, it is not yet a standard practice in transplant cultivation. Thus, we evaluated the long-term effects of thermopriming—a heat-based priming technique—on the growth, development, and fruit yield of tomato plants. Following a recovery period of about six weeks for thermoprimed plants without stress inducers, we subjected them to subsequent salt stress to ascertain the persistence of the priming effects. Additionally, we compared the efficacy of thermopriming with benzothiadiazole (BTH), a chemical elicitor, in enhancing plant resilience to abiotic stress. While BTH application negatively impacted both plant growth and fruit health, thermopriming showed no such adverse effects on these parameters. Instead, thermopriming initially enhanced the plant defense mechanisms by increasing the accumulation of protective phenols and flavonoids in the leaves. Interestingly, while thermopriming did not alter the response to salt stress, it notably strengthened the overall resilience of the plants. Our findings underscore both the potential and temporal constraints of thermopriming memory. Over the years, thrips have transitioned from a minor nuisance to a major problem, significantly impacting the yield and quality of cotton. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for plant protection have emerged as an effective alternative to traditional pesticide spraying equipment. UAVs offer advantages such as avoiding crop damage and enhancing pesticide deposition on the plants and have become the primary choice for pesticide application in cotton fields. In this study, a 2-year field experiment found that the thrips population in a cotton field in Xinjiang, China, exhibited gradual growth during the early flowering phase, peaking in late July. The thrips population gradually shifted from the lower canopy to the upper canopy as the cotton flowers opened layer by layer. From 09:00 to 11:00 (GMT+8) and 19:00 to 21:00 (GMT+8), thrips mainly flew outside the flowers, while from 17:00 to 19:00 (GMT+8), they mostly inhabited the inner whorls of flowers. The insecticides 10% cyantraniliprole oil dispersion and 10% spinetoram suspension concentrate, sprayed by UAV, had the best control effect on thrips, with 80.51% and 79.22% control effect after 7 days of spraying, respectively. The optimal spraying time for 10% cyantraniliprole oil dispersion was 19:00 (GMT+8), and the control effect on thrips reached 91.16% at 7 days of spraying. During the cotton flowering period, thrips inhabited flowers in the evening and flew outside during the day. Background: Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is a devastating disease affecting cloven-hoofed animals, that leads to significant economic losses in affected countries and regions. Currently, there is an evident inclination towards the utilization of nanoparticles as powerful platforms for innovative vaccine development. Therefore, this study developed a ferritin-based nanoparticle (FNP) vaccine that displays a neutralizing epitope of foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) VP1 (aa 140–158) on the surface of FNP, and evaluated the immunogenicity and protective efficacy of these FNPs in mouse and guinea pig models to provide a strategy for developing potential FMD vaccines. Results: This study expressed the recombinant proteins Hpf, HPF-NE and HPF-T34E via an E. coli expression system. The results showed that the recombinant proteins Hpf, Hpf-NE and Hpf-T34E could be effectively assembled into nanoparticles. Subsequently, we evaluated the immunogenicity of the Hpf, Hpf-NE and Hpf-T34E proteins in mice, as well as the immunogenicity and protectiveness of the Hpf-T34E protein in guinea pigs. The results of the mouse experiment showed that the immune efficacy in the Hpf-T34E group was greater than the Hpf-NE group. The results from guinea pigs immunized with Hpf-T34E showed that the immune efficacy was largely consistent with the immunogenicity of the FMD inactivated vaccine (IV) and could confer partial protection against FMDV challenge in guinea pigs. Conclusions: The Hpf-T34E nanoparticles stand out as a superior choice for a subunit vaccine candidate against FMD, offering effective protection in FMDV-infected model animals. Carrot is a major root vegetable crop grown in many parts of the world. In Europe, cavity spot disease continues to have a major impact on marketable yield. The disease is caused by several Pythium spp., with P. violae the main pathogen in the UK and results in small black lesions on mature carrot roots. The lack of reliable inoculation methods for these Pythium pathogens has, for many years, hampered the identification of new effective crop protection products or carrot varieties that are resistant to the disease. In this research, inoculation methods were developed for P. violae using mycelium or oospores, each of which successfully induced typical cavity spot symptoms in both pot‐ and field‐grown carrots as well as consistent root stunting in the former. These methods were also used to successfully identify carrot cultivars with resistance to cavity spot and confirmed the efficacy of the fungicide metalaxyl‐M against the disease. Results therefore demonstrated that the inoculation methods should be reliable for identifying the efficacy of crop protection products, assessing cavity spot resistance and for further studies investigating the biology and epidemiology of the pathogen. Plant protection unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have become popular in mountain orchards, but due to the differences in planting structures, the chances of heavy spraying, missed spraying and pesticide drift are increasing. To mitigate the adverse effects of these phenomena, it is necessary to clarify the effective deposition range of aerial spray droplets. This study proposed an effective spray swath determination method for the effective spraying range of mountainous orchards with UAVs equipped with a mist nozzle (bilateral 1% coverage). This approach focused on exploring the effects of flight height (unidirectional flight modes of 2, 3 and 4 m), spray nozzle atomization performance (reciprocating flight modes of 20, 30 and 40 µm) and flight route (treetop flying and inter-row flying) on the spraying range in a mountain setting. In addition, the study analysed the relationship between the droplet-size spectrum and the effective swath position. The results showed that it is feasible to use the bilateral 1% coverage evaluation method to determine the effective spray swath of a UAV adapted with a mist nozzle for aerial operation in a mountainous Nangguo Pear orchard. With the increase in UAV flight height (2-4 m), the effective unidirectional spray swath also increased, and with the increase in atomization level (20-40 mm), the effective reciprocating spray swath showed a decreasing trend. Moreover, the average effective swath width measured by the UAV for treetop flight was greater than that measured for interrow flight. The study also found that the proportion of small droplets (droplet size less than 100 µm) below the UAV route was lower (approximately 50%) than along the sides of the route (approximately 80%), and the spray swath was not symmetrically distributed along the flight route but shifted laterally by approximately 3 to 4 m in the downhill direction. PERSAM is a software tool for predicting environmental concentrations of plant protection products (PPPs) in soil commissioned by EFSA. The PERSAM tool was first launched in 2013. In support of the EFSA guidance document for predicting environmental concentrations of PPPs in soil (2017), the PERSAM software tool was updated for calculating the predicted environmental concentration of PPPs in soil. The computerised tools will be released for use by applicants and risk assessors for the evaluation of PPPs and transformation products according to Parliament and Council Regulation (EC) 1107/2009. The software application assists the user in performing calculations using the analytical model, as described in the guidance document for predicting environmental concentrations of PPPs in soil (2017). More specifically, the software will be able to calculate: Tier‐1 predicted environmental concentrations (PEC); Tier‐2 95th‐percentile PECs; and the selection of the grid cell including the scenario properties corresponding to the 95th‐percentile PEC as needed for the scenario development at Tier 3A, and generation of a so‐called transfer file that can be read by the numerical models described in the guidance document. Plant viruses cause severe losses in agricultural production. Parasite-derived resistance (PDR) offers a promising avenue for developing disease-resistant varieties independent of resistance genes. However, for potyviruses with great agricultural importance, such as soybean mosaic virus (SMV), systematic research on viral genes that can be used for PDR has not been conducted. In this study, we transiently expressed the untranslated region (UTR) or each protein-coding cistron of SMV in Nicotiana benthamiana to evaluate their potential role in conferring PDR. A viral suppressor of RNA silencing (VSR) was also applied to investigate the possible mechanisms of the PDR. The results showed that the transient overexpression of UTR and each cistron of SMV could inhibit SMV infection. The expression of VSR in N. benthamiana leaves could compromise UTR and most of the SMV cistron-mediated inhibition of SMV infection, indicating the involvement of RNA silencing in PDR. In comparison, the expression of VSR could not compromise the PDR conferred by coat protein (CP), P3N-PIPO, cylindrical inclusion (CI), and NIa-Pro, suggesting that these viral cistrons may play roles in PDR at the protein level. These results reveal diverse mechanisms in PDR conferred by different viral cistrons and provide potential gene candidates that can be used for transgenic approaches against SMV. In recent years, skin blemish diseases of potato (including black dot (BD) caused by Colletotricum coccodes) have begun to be important for global potato marketing, since consumers often reject tubers with an imperfect appearance, which results in financial losses caused by the disposal of unwanted potatoes. Like for many non-fatal plant diseases, BD severity may depend on the immune status of plants influenced by other infectious agents. Using a set of 98 potato cultivars differing in their late blight (LB) resistance, we examined the correlation between the intensity of their infection with LB determined by their LB resistance and the occurrence of the BD disease under field conditions with a high background level of both diseases. Using LB-susceptible (Arizona) and moderately susceptible (Sante) cultivars, we also evaluated the effect of a crop protection against LB on BD development under the same field conditions. A strong negative correlation (r = −0.81, p < 0.05) between the LB resistance and the BD occurrence has been revealed. An experiment using the two cultivars, chemically protected against LB, showed a significant reduction in BD occurrence of 30% (cv. Arizona) and 20% (cv. Sante) compared to the untreated controls; the total yield and marketability of potatoes increased by 103.6 and 62.5% for cv. Arizona and by 65.9 and 43.8% for cv. Sante. The reduction in the LB affection of potato is one of the key factors improving the immune status of potato cultivars in relation to BD infection, so methods of LB protection should be included in a complex approach to BD control. For the investigation of diseases and other harmful environmental influences (e.g., chemicals) epidemiological studies rely on high quality human samples, among others. Collecting samples and data in the field can pose an enormous challenge to the study team with regard to health protection and occupational safety, especially in the context of a pandemic where there was great uncertainty about the biological risks associated with SARS-CoV-2. The German Environmental Specimen Bank (German ESB) is a key element of environmental and human biomonitoring in Germany with the aim to document and assess trends of human and environmental exposure to chemicals over time and to provide scientific data for policy decision makers. Starting with a pilot study in 1978 human samples are now collected at four sampling locations annually, while sampling is carried out with a highly standardized mobile laboratory since 2013. Due to the corona pandemic 3 of 4 ESB sampling campaigns had to be cancelled in 2020. However, a continuous sampling is crucial to generate current policy relevant data on chemical exposure. Hence, a protection and hygiene concept has been developed including COVID-19 testing with the goal to protect the health of participants and employees during sampling and to meet legal requirements, while sustaining the standardized procedures of sampling and sample preparation. The concept is based on a flexible approach to allow adjustments to changing government regulations and recommendations in the course of the pandemic. By implementing this concept, all samplings were successfully carried out in 2021 & 2022, with the pandemic still ongoing. Sodium para-aminosalicylic acid (PAS-Na) treatment for manganese (Mn) intoxication has shown efficacy in experimental and clinical studies, giving rise to additional studies on its efficacy for lead (Pb) neurotoxicity and its associated mechanisms of neuroprotection. The difference between PAS-Na and other metal complexing agents, such as edetate calcium sodium (CaNa 2 -EDTA), is firstly that PAS-Na can readily pass through the blood-brain barrier (BBB), and complex and facilitate the excretion of manganese and lead. Secondly, PAS-Na has anti-inflammatory effects. Recent studies have broadened the understanding on the mechanisms associated with efficacy of PAS-Na. The latter has been shown to modulate multifarious manganese- and lead- induced neurotoxicity, via its anti-apoptotic and anti-inflammatory effects, as well as its ability to inhibit pyroptosis, and regulate abnormal autophagic processes. These observations provide novel scientific bases and new concepts for the treatment of lead, mercury, copper, thallium, as well as other toxic encephalopathies, and implicate PAS-Na as a compound with greater prospects for clinical medical application. Hainan Island has the most extensive and well‐preserved tropical forests in China. With rapid economic development of Hainan, biodiversity is increasingly at risk. Determining the spatial patterns of plant diversity in Hainan and explaining the drivers behind plant diversity are important considerations in assessing and maximizing the effectiveness of national parks, such as the newly designated Hainan Rainforest National Park. We assessed phylogenetic diversity patterns, and species richness using 106,252 georeferenced specimen records and a molecular phylogeny of 3,792 native plant species. Based on phylogenetic range‐weighted turnover metrics, we divided Hainan flora into four major floristic units. The Grade of Membership model was used to further verify the four units, and to understand their boundaries and the internal structure of each floristic unit. Finally, the best combination model was used to explore the driving mechanisms underlying the division. Our results reveal that central Hainan is the most important hotspot for plant endemism and diversity, followed by the southern area. Environmental energy is the main factor determining the spatial patterns of native plant diversity on the island, and accessibility has the greatest impact on native plant diversity among social factors. We explore patterns of spatial phylogenetics and biogeography to identify potential priorities for management and conservation drivers of plant diversity patterns across Hainan, to provide the basis for the effective protection of native plant diversity and the improvement of national parks of Hainan Island. Widespread use of plant protection agents in agriculture is a major cause of pollution. Apart from active ingredients, the environmental impact of auxiliary synthetic polymers should be minimized if they are highly persistent. An alternative to synthetic polymers is the use of natural polysaccharides, which are abundant and biodegradable. In this study, we explore pectin microgels functionalized with anchor peptides (P‐MAPs) to be used as an alternative biobased pesticide delivery system. Using copper as the active ingredient, P‐MAPs effectively prevented infection of grapevine plants with downy mildew under semi‐field conditions on par with commercial copper pesticides. By using anchor peptides, the microgels tightly bind to the leaf surface, exhibiting excellent rain fastness and prolonged fungicidal activity. Finally, P‐MAPs are shown to be easily degradable by enzymes found in nature, demonstrating their negligible long‐term impact on the environment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mobile crowdsensing is a new paradigm for intelligent mobile devices to collect and share various types of sensing data in the urban environment. The recent rapid development of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technology facilitates the realization of crowdsensing because UAVs have high-efficiency mobility in the urban environment and have been used in various areas of aerial photography, agriculture, plant protection, express transportation, disaster relief, and so on. However, for UAVs, one of the key issues for the archival of efficient crowdsensing is task allocation, which must balance the task quality and cost. This paper first proposes a mathematical model for task allocation for UAVs in crowdsensing. Then, for the effectiveness of data sensing, three algorithms are proposed to allocate tasks for the purpose of minimizing the incentive cost while ensuring the quality of sensing data. The proposed algorithms include the minimum cost first (MCF) algorithm, which assigns a high priority to UAVs with the lowest cost, the maximum ratio first (MRF) algorithm, which assigns a high priority to UAVs with a high ratio of sensing quality and sensing cost, and a genetic algorithm-based one (GA-TA), which comprehensively considers the factors such as UAV sensing quality, sensing cost, and execution ability. Experimental results show that, compared with MCF and MRF, GA-TA achieves the lowest total sensing cost, average task cost, and total moving distance of UAVs, and the highest average contribution of UAVs. Plant pathogens with their abundance are harmful and cause huge damage to different agricultural crops and economy of a country as well as lead towards the shortage of food for humans. For their management, the utilization of entomopathogenic fungi is an eco-friendly technique, sustainable to the environment, safe for humans and has promising effect over chemical-based pesticides. This process requires a biochemical mechanism, including the production of enzymes, toxins, and other metabolites that facilitate host infection and invasion. Essential enzymes such as chitinase, proteinase, and lipase play a direct role in breaking down the host cuticle, the primary barrier to EPF (Entomopathogenic Fungi) infection. Additionally, secondary metabolites such as destruxins in Metarhizium, beauvericin in Beauveria, hirsutellides in Hirsutella, isarolides in Isaria, cordyols in Cordyceps, and vertihemipterins in Verticillium, among others, act both directly and indirectly to disable the defense mechanisms of insect hosts, thereby accelerating the EPF infection process. The chemical composition of these secondary metabolites varies, ranging from simple non-peptide pigments such as oosporine to highly complex piperazine derivatives such as vertihemiptellides. The biocontrol efficacy of EPF is extensively studied, with numerous fungal strains commercially available on a large scale for managing arthropod pests. This review emphasizes the role of proteins and enzymes against crop pathogens, detailing their mode of action, and describing the metabolites from entomopathogenic fungi and their biological activities. New strategies have to be introduced for the management of agricultural and public health insects to overcome the problems associated with long-term use of synthetic insecticides. Plant-based natural products are among the possible and available alternatives to be applied for insect management. Among the plant secondary metabolites, monoterpenes have been widely studied for their applications in insect control. In this review, we focus on the studies describing the insecticidal and grain protection activities of monoterpenes against stored product insects. In addition, the biosynthesis and chemistry of monoterpenes as well as their possible modes of action and commercialization opportunities are summarized. The present review emphasizes the importance of monoterpenes as target-specific, biodegradable, environmentally safe grain protectants as well as their possible practical use as a tool in integrated pest management programs. The protection of plants from diseases is mainly based on the use of chemical pesticides against pathogenic agents of fungal or bacterial etiology. That is why, in the past two decades, much attention has been paid to the development of ecological biological methods of combating plant diseases, which are considered an alternative to the traditional use of chemical pesticides. The aquatic environment is a good source for the detection of new strains of antagonistic microorganisms in relation to phytopathogens. The aim of the research was to determine the potential of the biodiversity of the microbiota isolated from the aquatic environment to combat the development of phytopathogenic fungi. Among actinobacteria, maximal inhibition of test cultures was achieved by strains of the genera Streptomyces (against A. alternata), Micromonospora (against A. niger), Actinoplanes, and Nocardia (against F. oxysporum). Bacteria of the genera Bacillus and Micrococcus possess the highest activity against A. alternata, B. cinerea, and F. oxysporum. The highest activity against phytopathogenic fungi was achieved by micromycetes of the genus Trichoderma (growth inhibition zones reached 40.0 mm). Cyanobacteria Oscillatoria brevis and Oscillatoria acutissima are active against A. niger and F. oxysporum, respectively. A co‐evolutionary arms race ensues when parasites exhibit exploitative behaviour, which prompts adaptations in their hosts, in turn triggering counter‐adaptations by the parasites. To unravel the genomic basis of this coevolution from the host's perspective, we collected ants of the host species Temnothorax longispinosus, parasitized by the social parasite Temnothorax americanus, from 10 populations in the northeastern United States exhibiting varying levels of parasite prevalence and living under different climatic conditions. We conducted a genome‐wide association study (GWAS) to identify single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with both prevalence and climate. Our investigation highlighted a multitude of candidate SNPs associated with parasite prevalence, particularly in genes responsible for sensory perception of smell including odorant receptor genes. We further focused on population‐specific compositions of cuticular hydrocarbons, a complex trait important for signalling, communication and protection against desiccation. The relative abundances of n‐alkanes were correlated with climate, while there was only a trend between parasite prevalence and the relative abundances of known recognition cues. Furthermore, we identified candidate genes likely involved in the synthesis and recognition of specific hydrocarbons. In addition, we analysed the population‐level gene expression in the antennae, the primary organ for odorant reception, and established a strong correlation with parasite prevalence. Our comprehensive study highlights the intricate genomic patterns forged by the interplay of diverse selection factors and how these are manifested in the expression of various phenotypes. Citicoline has been widely used for the treatment of neurological conditions of the central nervous system (CNS), and exhibit potential for infection management, providing anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antioxidant and neuroprotective properties. The present study describes the case of a 50-year-old male patient co-infected with suspected tuberculosis and COVID-19 affecting the CNS who was treated with citicoline. The study aimed to raise clinical questions and initiate a comprehensive literature review. It also aimed to explore the plausible benefits of the use of citicoline in restoring consciousness and alleviating neurological symptoms in CNS infections. In the literature review, eight studies, including two quasi-experimental studies, five literature reviews, and one case report were found to be relevant to the case of the patient described herein, and they suggested that citicoline demonstrated partial protection against cerebral malaria, prevented encephalitis sequelae when immediately administered, and inhibited coronavirus replication. Additionally, six studies reported the potential of citicoline in the treatment of neurological conditions, such as ethambutol-induced optic neuropathy, stroke, head trauma and CNS infections caused by cerebral malaria and COVID-19, compared to standard therapy. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are soil microorganisms living in symbiosis with most terrestrial plants. They are known to improve plant tolerance to numerous abiotic and biotic stresses through the systemic induction of resistance mechanisms. With the aim of developing more sustainable agriculture, reducing the use of chemical inputs is becoming a major concern. After providing an overview on AMF history, phylogeny, development cycle and symbiosis benefits, the current review aims to explore the potential of AMF as biostimulants and/or biocontrol agents. Nowadays, AMF inoculums are already increasingly used as biostimulants, improving mineral nutrient plant acquisition. However, their role as a promising tool in the biocontrol market, as an alternative to chemical phytosanitary products, is underexplored and underdiscussed. Thus, in the current review, we will address the mechanisms of mycorrhized plant resistance to biotic stresses induced by AMF, and highlight the various factors in favor of inoculum application, but also the challenges that remain to be overcome. Plants constantly face the environment that surrounds them and fight for survival against biotic and abiotic stress factors. To deal with harmful conditions, plants have developed a multilayer defence system, making them capable of recognising threats and promptly recovering from them. This phenomenon, which takes advantage of the "memory effect", is referred to as bio-priming and represents a new frontier in terms of crop protection. Here, we investigated the "indirect" protective mechanisms of a new yeast extract formulate in Vitis vinifera cv. Sangiovese plants at both the biochemical and genic levels. The formulate was applied once a week for three consecutive weeks, and grapevine leaves were sampled from the first to the fifth day after treatment (dat) at every week of the experiment. Increased levels of jasmonic acid (every week at 2 dat; +70% as average) and abscisic acid (at 1 dat of the first week, more than 1.7-fold higher than the control) and the underproduction of salicylic acid (from 2 dat; −18%) confirmed that these signalling molecules/"specialised compounds" are actively involved in the early activation of defence pathways in treated vines. In addition, pr2 and chit1b, two genes involved in regulating hormonal crosstalk, were significantly up-regulated (both in the first and second week of the trial) and were also found to underlie upstream molecular activation. The results obtained by this investigation confirm the use of this new product to prime and protect grapevines from a wide range of fungal and fungal-like plant pathogens through the induction of defence responses. Pesticides affect biota inside and outside agricultural fields due to their intrinsic mode of action. This study investigated whether pesticide active substances (AS) approved for conventional agriculture in Europe differ in their ecotoxicity from AS approved for organic agriculture. The evaluation was based on official ecotoxicological data for surrogate honeybee, bird, and earthworm species, which also serve as a reference for official environmental risk assessments in the pesticide authorization process. In October 2022, 268 chemical-synthetic AS approved for conventional and 179 nature-based AS approved for organic agriculture were listed in the EU Pesticide Database. Ecotoxicological data were only available for 254 AS approved for use in conventional agriculture and 110 AS approved for use in organic agriculture. The results showed a higher ecotoxicity of conventional AS: 79% (201 AS), 64% (163 AS) and 91% (230 AS) were moderately to acutely toxic to honeybees, birds, and earthworms, respectively, compared to 44% (48 AS), 14% (15 AS) and 36% (39 AS) of AS approved for organic agriculture. We have only considered the potential ecotoxicities of individual substances in this assessment; actual exposure in the field, where multiple AS formulations with other chemicals (including impurities) are applied, will be different. Nevertheless, these results emphasize that an increase in organic agriculture in Europe would reduce the ecotoxicological burden on biodiversity and associated ecosystem services. Agricultural fungicide pollution poses a significant environmental challenge and causes adverse effects on human health. Therefore, strategies to limit fungicide usage are of paramount importance. Trichoderma fungi, due to their antagonistic activity against various pathogenic fungi, have shown potential as a sustainable alternative to chemical fungicides. However, bio‐control agents like Trichoderma are vulnerable to physical stimuli and show diminished efficacy during prolonged storage. To address these challenges, a mild and scalable encapsulation method for Trichoderma spores is introduced, employing a layer‐by‐layer (LbL) approach using biobased lignin derivatives. It is demonstrated that the LbL encapsulation technique significantly improved spore stability relative to naked spores, even under adverse conditions including extreme temperatures and prolonged exposure to Ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. Notably, encapsulated Trichoderma spores showed enhanced efficacy in cultivating tomato plants compared to naked spores. Additionally, the findings revealed that the in planta efficacy of encapsulated spores is dependent on the specific Trichoderma strain used. This study suggests that Trichoderma spores encapsulated with lignin through the LbL approach, are a promising and sustainable alternative to chemical fungicides with potential for commercialization. The EU re-authorisation of glyphosate, the active substance used in plant protection products, has once again highlighted the issues and problems associated with the active substance in 2023. The main source of tension is that the active substance was classified as a potential carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer in 2015, but the EU’s competent agencies have not identified any reasons for banning the active substance. Despite calls from civil society for removing glyphosate from the internal market, the European Commission has refused to ban the substance from the internal market. The aim of this paper is to present in more detail the European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI) to ban glyphosate and the Commission’s response to the initiative. The European Citizens’ Initiative is a legal instrument that gives EU citizens the opportunity to express their will on a specific issue or policy question. Thus, through the citizens’ initiative, it is possible to channel the demands of EU citizens into the legislative process. An analysis of the measures taken in response to the initiative, that aimed to ban glyphosate shows that an ECI can not only have a direct impact, but can also have an indirect trigger effect in terms of getting the Commission to pay attention to an important issue. The result of this indirect trigger effect may be that, after a longer period of time, the Commission finally initiates legislation on the subject of a particular ECI. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BACKGROUND: Mycorrhizal plants show enhanced resistance to biotic stresses, but few studies have addressed mycorrhiza‐induced resistance (MIR) against biotic challenges in woody plants, particularly citrus. Here we present a comparative study of two citrus species, Citrus aurantium, which is resistant to Tetranychus urticae, and Citrus reshni, which is highly susceptible to T. urticae. Although both mycorrhizal species are protected in locally infested leaves, they show very distinct responses to MIR. RESULTS: Previous studies have indicated that C. aurantium is insensitive to MIR in systemic tissues and MIR‐triggered antixenosis. Conversely, C. reshni is highly responsive to MIR which triggers local, systemic and indirect defense, and antixenosis against the pest. Transcriptional, hormonal and inhibition assays in C. reshni indicated the regulation of jasmonic acid (JA)‐ and abscisic acid‐dependent responses in MIR. The phytohormone jasmonic acid isoleucine (JA‐Ile) and the JA biosynthesis gene LOX2 are primed at early timepoints. Evidence indicates a metabolic flux from phenylpropanoids to specific flavones that are primed at 24 h post infestation (hpi). MIR also triggers the priming of naringenin in mycorrhizal C. reshni, which shows a strong correlation with several flavones and JA‐Ile that over‐accumulate in mycorrhizal plants. Treatment with an inhibitor of phenylpropanoid biosynthesis C4H enzyme impaired resistance and reduced the symbiosis, demonstrating that phenylpropanoids and derivatives mediate MIR in C. reshni. CONCLUSION: MIR's effectiveness is inversely correlated to basal immunity in different citrus species, and provides multifaceted protection against T. urticae in susceptible C. reshni, activating rapid local and systemic defenses that are mainly regulated by the accumulation of specific flavones and priming of JA‐dependent responses. © 2024 The Authors.
