1. Nonresonant central exclusive production from CMS+TOTEM.

Abstract: The central exclusive production of charged hadron pairs in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13TeV is examined, based on data collected in a special high-β∗ run of the LHC. Events are selected by requiring both scattered protons detected in the TOTEM Roman pots, exactly two oppositely charged identified particles in the CMS silicon tracker, and the energy–momentum balance of these four particles. The nonresonant continuum processes are studied with the invariant mass of the centrally produced two-pion system in the resonance-free region, m<0.7GeV or m>1.8GeV. Differential cross sections as functions of the azimuthal angle between the surviving protons, squared four-momenta, and two-hadron invariant mass are measured in a wide region of scattered protons with transverse momentum between 0.2 and 0.8GeV and for pion rapidities |y|<2. A rich structure of interactions related to double pomeron exchange emerges. The parabolic minimum in the distribution of the two-proton azimuthal angle is observed for the first time. It can be understood as an effect of additional pomeron exchanges between the protons, and of the interference between the bare and the rescattered amplitudes. After model tuning, various physical quantities related to the pomeron cross section, proton–pomeron and hadron–pomeron form factors, trajectory slopes and intercepts, as well as coefficients of diffractive eigenstates of the proton are determined. 2. J/ψ photoproduction: Threshold to very high energy

Abstract: A reaction model for γ+p→J/ψ+p photoproduction, which exposes the cc¯ content of the photon in making the transition γ→cc¯+P→J/ψ and couples the intermediate cc¯ system to the proton's valence quarks via Pomeron (P) exchange, is used to deliver a description of available data, viz. both differential and total cross sections from near threshold, where data has newly been acquired, to invariant mass W≈300GeV. The study suggests that it is premature to link existing γ+p→J/ψ+p data with, for instance, in-proton gluon distributions, the quantum chromodynamics trace anomaly, or pentaquark production. Further developments in reaction theory and higher precision data are necessary before the validity of any such connections can be assessed.

3. Two-Pomeron Interaction.

Abstract: We study the interaction of two discrete pomeron fields while considering mass mixing and the general structure of the interaction potential for pomerons within the framework for a functional renormalization group analysis of Reggeon field theory. We find fixed points from the zeros of the beta function establishing the existence of three groups of solutions: the first corresponds to two uncoupled pomerons, the second is a solution known as a "pomeron–odderon" interaction, and the final is a real general solution with an interaction potential. We also study its universal properties around this fixed point. This analysis allows for a discussion for the first time on the mixing of two pomerons through renormalization flow paths from the ultraviolet to the non-perturbative infrared regions. 4. Multiplicity Distributions and Modified Combinants in the Multipomeron Model of pp Interaction at High Energies.

Abstract: The multiplicity distributions of charged particles and their combinants for pp collisions at LHC energies are studied within the Multipomeron Exchange Model (MEM) that takes into account the phenomenon of string fusion. It is shown that the use of Gaussian-type distributions for multiplicity distributions at a fixed number of pomerons allows, within the MEM framework, the reproduction of the resulting multiplicity distributions and the oscillatory behavior of combinants, found in the ALICE and CMS pp collision data at LHC energies. It is important that in the proposed approach, the parameters of these Gaussian-type distributions are not considered free, but are calculated from the two-particle correlation function of a single string. 5. Quantum Chromodynamics and the Pomeron

Abstract: This volume describes the Pomeron, an object of crucial importance in very high energy particle physics. Starting with a general description of the Pomeron within the framework of Regge theory, the emergence of the Pomeron within scalar field theory is discussed, providing a natural foundation on which to develop the more realistic case of QCD. The reggeization of the gluon is demonstrated and used to build the Pomeron of perturbative QCD. The dynamical nature of the Pomeron and its role in small-x deep inelastic scattering and in diffractive scattering is also examined in detail. The volume concludes with a study of the colour dipole approach to high energy scattering and the explicit role of unitarity corrections. This book will be of interest to theoretical and experimental particle physicists, and applied mathematicians. First published in 1997, this title has been reissued as an Open Access publication.

6. Extraction of gluon distributions from structure functions at small x in holographic QCD

Abstract: We investigate the nucleon and pion gluon distribution functions in the framework of holographic QCD, focusing on the small Bjorken x region. Based on an approximate relation, the gluon distributions are extracted from structure functions of the unpolarized deep inelastic scattering which can be calculated with a holographic QCD model, assuming the Pomeron exchange. All the adjustable parameters of the model are determined with the HERA data of the proton structure functions. We explicitly show that the extracted proton gluon distribution is consistent with results of the recent global QCD analysis. The structure functions of the pion can be computed without any additional parameter, which enables us to predict its gluon distribution also. We find that the resulting pion gluon density is smaller than the proton's, and agrees with the recent global QCD analysis result within the uncertainties.

7. Reflection identities of harmonic sums and pole decomposition of BFKL eigenvalue.

Abstract: We analyze the recent results of next-to-next-to-leading (NNLO) singlet BFKL eigenvalue in N = 4 SYM written in terms of harmonic sums. The nested harmonic sums building known NNLO BFKL eigenvalue for specific values of the conformal spin have poles at negative integers. We sort the harmonic sums according to the complexity with respect to their weight and depth and use their pole decomposition in terms of the reflection identities to find the most complicated terms of NNLO BFKL eigenvalue for an arbitrary value of the conformal spin. 10. Probing the standard model and beyond at high-energy colliders

Abstract: The thesis covers the following topics: Assuming a partonic structure of the Pomeron we give predictions for diffractive heavy flavour production at the Tevatron and the LHC and diffractive Higgs production at the LHC in leading-order approximation. For the latter the dominant background processes are also considered. We obtain results on single as well as double diffractive cross sections assuming a Donnachie-Landshoff-type Pomeron flux factor. Measurements of the single inclusive jet cross section at the Tevatron by the CDF Collaboration maybe suggest a modified picture of QCD in the large E(_T) range. A parameter fit of a neutral heavy vector boson Z(^1) to the CDF data, in leading order perturbation theory, is performed, and the question of how the corresponding single inclusive jet cross-sections and the dijet angular distributions at the LHC are affected by this additional Z' is discussed. We test a model, motivated by the former R(_b) and R(_c) "crisis", which contains extra vector fermions. We suggest an alternative indirect test of the possible existence of new heavy quark flavours at the LEP2 collider, which turns out to give the clearest signal. We calculate qq cross sections within this framework, including one loop corrections. Hadronic antenna patterns can provide a valuable diagnostic tool for probing the origin of the reported excess of high x, Q(^2) events at HERA. We present quantitative predictions for the distributions of soft particles and jets in standard deep inelastic scattering eq → eq events and in events corresponding to the production of a narrow colour-triplet scalar resonance. We also study the patterns corresponding to Higgs production and decay in high- energy hadron-hadron collisions. In particular, the signal gg → H → bb and background gg → bb processes are shown to have very different radiation patterns, and this may provide a useful additional method for distinguishing Higgs signal events from the QCD background. The process eq → eq + γ exhibits radiation zeros, i.e. configurations of the final-state particles for which the scattering amplitude vanishes. We study these zeros for both e(^+)u and e(^+)d scattering. The latter exhibits a new type of zero which to our knowledge has not previously been identified. The observability of radiation zeros at HERA is discussed. In the framework of this new type of zero we also study the process e(^+)e(^-) → qqγ. We calculate the positions of these zeros for u-quark and d-quark production and assess the feasibifity of identifying the zeros in experiments at high energies. The radiation zeros are shown to occur also for massive quarks, and we discuss how the bbγ final state may offer a particularly clean environment in which to observe them.

We find convergence for only very small values of the coupling constant αs, much smaller than the commonly assumed values. We compare the results with the solution of the Balitski–Kovchegov equation. 12. Hadron Spectroscopy in Double Pomeron Exchange Experiments.

Abstract: Central exclusive production in hadron-hadron collisions at high energies, for example p+ p→ p+X + p, where the + represents a large rapidity gap, is a valuable process for spectroscopy of mesonic states X. At collider energies the gaps can be large enough to be dominated by pomeron exchange, and then the quantum numbers of the state X are restricted. Isoscalar JPC = 0++ and 2++ mesons are selected, and our understanding of these spectra is incomplete. 13. Photon structure functions at small x in holographic QCD

Abstract: We investigate the photon structure functions at small Bjorken variable x in the framework of the holographic QCD, assuming dominance of the Pomeron exchange. The quasi-real photon structure functions are expressed as convolution of the Brower–Polchinski–Strassler–Tan (BPST) Pomeron kernel and the known wave functions of the U(1) vector field in the five-dimensional AdS space, in which the involved parameters in the BPST kernel have been fixed in previous studies of the nucleon structure functions. The predicted photon structure functions, as confronted with data, provide a clean test of the BPST kernel. The agreement between theoretical predictions and data is demonstrated, which supports applications of holographic QCD to hadronic processes in the nonperturbative region. Our results are also consistent with those derived from the parton distribution functions of the photon proposed by Glück, Reya, and Schienbein, implying realization of the vector meson dominance in the present model setup.

14. Total hadronic cross sections at high energies in holographic QCD.

Abstract: Abstract We present our analysis on high energy hadron–hadron scattering in the framework of the holographic QCD. Combining the Brower–Polchinski–Strassler–Tan Pomeron exchange kernel and gravitational form factors of the involved hadrons which are obtained by using the bottom-up AdS/QCD models in the five-dimensional AdS space, we calculate the total cross sections at high energies. We show that our calculations for the nucleon–nucleon scattering agree with the experimental data including the recent ones taken by the TOTEM collaboration at the LHC. The present framework is applicable to any high energy process, in which the strong interaction can be approximated by the Pomeron exchange. We present the results for the pion–nucleon and pion–pion scattering as examples, which can be obtained without any additional parameter because all the adjustable parameters are fixed via the analysis on the nucleon–nucleon scattering. The resulting total cross section ratios are σ t o t π N / σ t o t N N = 0.63 and σ t o t π π / σ t o t N N = 0.45 , respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: We review the elastic and diffractive scatterings of protons (called also the “forward physics”) with emphasis on the LHC data, especially those deviating from the expectations based on extrapolations from earlier measurements at the ISR and Fermilab and thus triggering searches for new ideas, models and theories. We list these new data and provide a brief introduction of available theoretical approaches, mainly those based on analyticity, crossing symmetry and unitarity, particularly the Regge pole model realizing these concepts. The multiplicity dependence of the BEC parameters characterizing the correlation strength and the correlation source size are investigated for charged-particle multiplicities of up to 240. A saturation effect in the multiplicity dependence of the correlation source size parameter is observed using the high-multiplicity 7 TeV data sample. The dependence of the BEC parameters on the average transverse momentum of the particle pair is also investigated.

Abstract: This paper presents studies of Bose-Einstein correlations (BEC) in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, using data from the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. Data were collected in a special low-luminosity configuration with a minimum-bias trigger and a high-multiplicity track trigger, accumulating integrated luminosities of 151 mu b(-1) and 8.4 nb(-1), respectively. The BEC are measured for pairs of like-sign charged particles, each with vertical bar eta vertical bar 2.5, for two kinematic ranges: the first with particle pr > 100 MeV and the second with particle pr > 500 MeV. The BEC parameters, characterizing the source radius and particle correlation strength, are investigated as functions of charged-particle multiplicity (up to 300) and average transverse momentum of the pair (up to 1.5 GeV). The double-differential dependence on charged-particle multiplicity and average transverse momentum of the pair is also studied. The BEC radius is found to be independent of the charged-particle multiplicity for high charged-particle multiplicity (above 100), confirming a previous observation at lower energy. This saturation occurs independent of the transverse momentum of the pair.

Abstract: Within the colour dipole picture for deep inelastic scattering at small Bjorken $x$, we study the production of a pair of relatively hard jets via coherent diffraction. By "relatively hard" we mean that the transverse momenta of the two jets -- the quark ($q$) and the antiquark ($\bar{q}$) generated by the decay of the virtual photon -- are much larger than the target saturation momentum $Q_s(Y_{\mathbb{P}})$ evaluated at the rapidity gap $Y_{\mathbb{P}}$. We argue that the typical final-state configurations are such that the hard $q\bar q$ dijets are accompanied by a semi-hard gluon jet, with a transverse momentum of the order of $Q_s(Y_{\mathbb{P}})$. The presence of this third jet ensures that the scattering is strong and thus avoids the strong suppression of exclusive (hard) dijet production due to colour transparency. For such "2+1" jet configurations, we demonstrate that both the emission of the semi-hard gluon and its scattering with the hadronic target can be factorised in terms of an effective gluon-gluon dipole. This effective description, originally proposed in [1-4], builds a bridge between the colour dipole picture and collinear factorisation: the cross-section for diffractive 2+1 jets can be written as the product between a hard factor describing the $q\bar{q}$ dijets and a semi-hard factor expressing the unintegrated gluon distribution of the Pomeron. The latter is controlled by gluon dipole scattering in the black disk limit and hence is strongly sensitive to gluon saturation. By integrating out the kinematics of the 3 jets, we obtain the $q\bar{q}g$ contribution to the diffractive structure function in collinearly-factorised form., 58 pages, 16 figures, 3 appendices

22. Structures in the diffraction cone: The 'break' and 'dip' in high-energy proton-proton scattering.

Abstract: Anticipating forthcoming publication by the TOTEM collaboration of low- elastic scattering data at = 13 and 2.76 TeV, hereby we emphasize the correlation between two prominent structures seen upon the otherwise exponential diffraction cone, namely a 'break' staying fixed around 0.1 GeV2 and a dip moving with energy logarithmically inwards; while at the ISR, the two structures are separated by a distance of about 1 GeV2, at the LHC, the dip comes close to the periphery of the 'break', thus affecting its parametrization. Abstract: We argue that resonances terminate, i.e. at certain mass/temperature they “melt”, converting into a kind of a quark-gluon soup. We predict a finite spectrum of glueball/oddball resonances lying on the pomeron/odderon trajectories. A simple model for Regge trajectories with threshold and asymptotic behaviour required by analyticity and unitarity is used.

Abstract: We present a first, detailed study of diffractive dijet photoproduction at the recently approved electron-ion collider (EIC) at BNL. Apart from establishing the kinematic reaches for various beam types, energies and kinematic cuts, we make precise predictions at next-to-leading order (NLO) of QCD in the most important kinematic variables. We show that the EIC will provide new and more precise information on the diffractive parton density functions (PDFs) in the pomeron than previously obtained at HERA, illuminate the still disputed mechanism of global vs.\ only resolved-photon factorization breaking, and provide access to a completely new quantity, i.e. nuclear diffractive PDFs., Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures

Abstract: What is the space of weakly-coupled, gravitational theories which contain massive, higher-spin particles? This class of theories is highly constrained and it is conjectured their ultraviolet completion must be string theory. We provide more evidence for this conjecture by studying the Regge limit in large $N$, $4d$ CFTs with single-trace operators of unbounded spin. We show that in the Regge limit, these theories have bulk scattering amplitudes which are consistent with the string theory prediction to all orders in $1/N$ for large, but finite, coupling. In the language of Regge theory, we show Pomeron exchange naturally exponentiates in the $1/N$ expansion. To do this, we solve the bootstrap equations at tree-level and then use the Lorentzian inversion formula to find the one-loop correlator in the Regge limit. This is a unitarity method for AdS/CFT which can be repeated iteratively to make all orders statements. We also explain under what conditions the tree-level result exponentiates in the $1/N$ expansion at arbitrary coupling. Finally, we comment on further inelastic effects and show they give subleading contributions at large coupling. Abstract: Exclusive heavy quarkonium photoproduction is one of the most popular processes in EIC, which has a large cross section and a simple final state. Due to the gluonic nature of the exchange Pomeron, this process can be related to the gluon distributions in the nucleus. The momentum transfer dependence of this process is sensitive to the interaction sites, which provides a powerful tool to probe the spatial distribution of gluons in the nucleus. Recently the problem of the origin of hadron mass has received lots of attention in determining the anomaly contribution $M_{a}$. The trace anomaly is sensitive to the gluon condensate, and exclusive production of quarkonia such as J/$\psi$ and $\Upsilon$ can serve as a sensitive probe to constrain it. 34. Dynamical model of ϕ meson photoproduction on the nucleon and He4

Abstract: We investigate $\ensuremath{\phi}$ meson photoproduction on the nucleon and $^{4}\mathrm{He}$ targets within a dynamical model approach based on a Hamiltonian which describes the production mechanisms by the Pomeron exchange, meson exchange, $\ensuremath{\phi}$ radiation, and nucleon resonance excitation mechanisms. The final $\ensuremath{\phi}N$ interactions are included and described by the gluon-exchange, direct $\ensuremath{\phi}N$ couplings, and the box diagrams arising from the couplings with $\ensuremath{\pi}N, \ensuremath{\rho}N, K\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}$, and $K\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Sigma}}$ channels. The parameters of the Hamiltonian are determined by the experimental data of $\ensuremath{\gamma}p\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\phi}p$ from the CLAS Collaboration. The resulting Hamiltonian is then used to predict the coherent $\ensuremath{\phi}$-meson production on the $^{4}\mathrm{He}$ targets by using the distorted-wave impulse approximation. For the proton target, the final $\ensuremath{\phi}N$ rescattering effects, as required by the unitarity condition, are found to be very weak, which supports the earlier calculations in the literature. For the $^{4}\mathrm{He}$ targets, the predicted differential cross sections are in good agreement with the data obtained by the LEPS Collaboration. The role of each mechanism in this reaction is discussed and predictions for a wide range of scattering angles are presented, which can be tested in future experiments.

Differential cross sections are measured as a function of ξ, the fractional energy loss of the intact proton; |t|, the squared four-momentum exchanged and Δη, the observable rapidity gap. The unfolded t differential cross section is consistent with an exponential dependence dσ/dt ∝ eBt with a slope parameter B = 7.60 ± 0.32 GeV−2. The unfolded ξ differential cross section is interpreted in the framework of Regge phenomenology to extract a Pomeron intercept of α(0) = 1.07 ± 0.09.

Abstract: Purpose. The existing experimental data on the elastic scattering of protons (antiprotons) by protons, including those obtained at the Collider, are not in doubt for non-exponential behavior of differential cross-section. Our task is to choose the most adequate analytical model that describes this behavior of the differential cross sections for elastic pp - and pp scattering. Methods. Pomeron alternatives for describing the non-exponential behavior of the diffraction cone in differential pp - and pp elastic cross-section are investigated. Results. It was shown that the pomeron amplitude with two tewrms with different t -dependences is strongly suggested by the data. Conclusions. The values of the slope B ( s,t ) and curvature parameter C ( s,t ) have been calculated for different Pomeron model within the wide s - and low t - range with the allowance made for the diffraction cone shape. The absolute values of the curvature parameter C ( s, 0) is predicted to be decreasing depending on s and change of sign at asymptotically large energies.

Abstract: In the framework of a Regge-pole model, we discussthe forward phase of the proton-proton elastic scattering amplitude (ρ(13 TeV) = 0.1 ± 0.01), recently measured at the LHC. Our model includesa dipole pomeron, odderon and secondary reggeon exchanges. It accommodetes forthe low- |t| «break» (departure from the exponential behavior of the diffraction cone), the accelerating rise with energy of the forward slope B(s, t = 0) and absence of secondary dips and bumps. Contrary to the majority of Regge-pole models, our approach is based on he use of a dipole (double pole) pomeron (DP). It has a number of advantages over the conventional simple pole pomeron: DP generates rising cross sections even at unit pomeron intercept and, what is even more important, it produces a single diffraction minimum and maximum in the differential cross section, in accord with the experimental data. Relative contributions from different components to the scattering amplitude are evaluated from the fitted model.

Abstract: We discuss unpolarized neutrino- and anti-neutrino-nucleon deep inelastic scattering (DIS) using a chiral doublet of baryonic sources with explicit symmetry breaking, in a slice of AdS$_5$ with both a hard and soft wall. We explicitly derive the direct and transition form factors for the vector and axial-vector currents for the holographic dual of a proton and neutron. We use them to derive the s-channel structure functions for neutrino and anti-neutrino scattering on a proton and neutron in bulk. The t-channel contributions stemming from the Pomeron and Reggeon exchanges are also evaluated explicitly. The pertinent even and odd structure functions in the limit of large and small parton momentum fraction $x$ are given. The results allow for the extraction of the nonperterbative parton distribution functions carried by the sea and valence quarks both at large-x and small-x regimes. Our holographic PDF sets compare well with LHAPDF and CTEQ PDF sets in the large-x and small-x regimes in the intermediate range of $Q^2, 54 pages, 10 figures

Abstract: The unitarily extended Bialas-Bzdak model of elastic proton-proton scattering is applied, without modifications, to describe the differential cross-section of elastic proton-antiproton collisions in the TeV energy range, and to extrapolate these differential cross-sections to LHC energies. In this model-dependent study we find that the differential cross-sections of elastic proton-proton collision data at 2.76 and 7 TeV energies differ significantly from the differential cross-section of elastic proton-antiproton collisions extrapolated to these energies. The elastic proton-proton differential cross-sections, extrapolated to 1.96 TeV energy with the help of this extended Bialas-Bzdak model do not differ significantly from that of elastic proton-antiproton collisions, within the theoretical errors of the extrapolation. Taken together these results provide a model-dependent, but statistically significant evidence for a crossing-odd component of the elastic scattering amplitude at the at least 7.08 sigma level. From the reconstructed Odderon and Pomeron amplitudes, we determine the $\sqrt{s}$ dependence of the corresponding total and differential cross-sections., Final version, typos fixed, accepted for a publication in EPJ C, including 3 tables, 32 figures, 61 pages. Abstract: We study compatibility of the Standard Model of particle physics and General Relativity by means of gravitational positivity bounds, which provide a necessary condition for a low-energy gravitational theory to be UV completable within the weakly coupled regime of gravity. In particular, we identify the cutoff scale of the Standard Model coupled to gravity by studying consistency of light-by-light scattering. While the precise value depends on details of the Pomeron effects in QCD, the cutoff scale reads $10^{16}$GeV if the single-Pomeron exchange picture works well up to this scale. Abstract: Electro-production of several pentaquark states is investigated in this study. The eSTARlight package is adapted to study the electro-production of and via pentaquark and resonance channels in and scattering processes at the proposed electron-ion colliders (EICs). The results obtained in this study are compared to those of non-resonance t-channels, which are described in the pomeron exchange model developed in our studies. Some pseudo-rapidity and rapidity distributions of and are presented for the proposed EICs, including EicC and EIC-US. It is found that EicC is a good platform to identify states in the future.

Staged implementation of multiple Roman Pot stations for tagging forward protons in diffractive processes allows studying for the first time the dynamics of the particle production in the diffractive processes systematically at the RHIC energy regime. The STAR detector system with complete azimuthal coverage at the central region equipped with excellent particle reconstruction capabilities enables studies of the constituent gluonic degree of freedom in double Pomeron exchange processes. Abstract: Theoretical approaches to the problem of the high energy hadron-hadron scattering in the Regge kinematics are reviewed. It is shown, that the gluon in QCD is reggeized and the Pomeron is a two gluon composite state. Further, the equation for the multi-gluon composite states is integrable at Nc→∞. Due to the AdS/CFT correspondence in N = 4 SUSY the BFKL Pomeron is equivalent to the reggeized graviton. The important properties of the maximal transcendentality and integrability are realized in this model. Multi-gluon scattering amplitudes are investigated in the Regge limit. The BDS ansatz for them is not valid beyond one loop due to the presence of the Mandelstam cuts. Abstract: The ALICE experiment at the Large Hadron Collider LHC is presently being commissioned. ALICE consists of a central barrel, a muon spectrometer and neutron calorimeters at 0°. Additional detectors for event classification and trigger purposes are located on both sides of the central barrel. The geometry of the ALICE detector allows the implementation of a diffractive double gap trigger by requiring two or more tracks in the central barrel but no activity in the event classification detectors. Some selected diffractive physics channels are discussed which become accessible by a double gap trigger. Abstract: We present a model of high energy soft pp interactions that has multi s- and t-channel components, which has been tuned to describe all the available data. The t-channel components allow matching of the soft to the hard (QCD) Pomeron. Absorptive effects are found to be large, and, for example, suppress the prediction of the total pp cross section to about 90 mb at the LHC. We use the model to calculate the survival probability, S2, of the rapidity gaps in the exclusive process pp→p+H+p, a process with great advantages for searching for the H→bb signal.
