The effect of pressure on Raman scattering (RS) in bulk H f S 2 is investigated under hydrostatic and non-hydrostatic pressure conditions. The RS line shape does not change significantly in the hydrostatic regime up to P = 9.6 GPa, showing a systematic blueshift of the spectral features. In a non-hydrostatic environment, seven peaks appear in the spectrum at P = 7 GPa, which dominate the RS line shape up to P = 10.5 GPa. The change in the RS line shape manifests a pressure-induced phase transition in H f S 2. The simultaneous observation of both low-pressure (LP) and high-pressure (HP) related RS peaks suggests the coexistence of two different phases over a wide pressure range. It is found that the HP-related phase is metastable and persists during the decompression cycle down to P = 1.2 GPa, while the LP-related features eventually recover at even lower pressure. The angle-resolved polarized RS performed under P = 7.4 GPa revealed a strong in-plane anisotropy of both the LP-related A 1 g mode and the HP peaks. The anisotropy is related to the possible distortion of the structure induced by the non-hydrostatic component of the pressure. Congestive heart failure (CHF) is a fatal disease with progressive severity and no cure; the hearts inability to adequately pump blood leads to fluid accumulation and frequent hospital readmissions after initial treatments. Therefore, it is imperative to continuously monitor CHF patients during its early stages to slow its progression and enable timely medical interventions for optimal treatment. An increase in interstitial fluid pressure (IFP) is indicative of acute CHF exacerbation, making IFP a viable biomarker for predicting upcoming CHF if continuously monitored. In this paper, we present an inductor-capacitor (LC) sensor for subcutaneous wireless and continuous IFP monitoring. The sensor is composed of inexpensive planar copper coils defined by a simple craft cutter, which serves as both the inductor and capacitor. Because of its sensing mechanism, the sensor does not require batteries and can wirelessly transmit pressure information. The sensor has a low-profile form factor for subcutaneous implantation and can communicate with a readout device through 4 layers of skin (12.7 mm thick in total). With a soft silicone rubber as the dielectric material between the copper coils, the sensor demonstrates an average sensitivity as high as -8.03 MHz/mmHg during in vitro simulations.

The search for magnetic topological materials has been at the forefront of condensed matter research for their potential to host exotic states such as axion insulators, magnetic Weyl semimetals, Chern insulators, etc. To date, the MnBi2nTe3n+1 family is the only group of materials showcasing van der Waals-layered structures, intrinsic magnetism and non-trivial band topology without trivial bands at the Fermi level. The interplay between magnetism and band topology in this family has led to the proposal of various topological phenomena, including the quantum anomalous Hall effect, quantum spin Hall effect and quantum magnetoelectric effect. Among these, the quantum anomalous Hall effect has been experimentally observed at record-high temperatures, highlighting the unprecedented potential of this family of materials in fundamental science and technological innovation. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive review of the research progress in this intrinsic magnetic topological insulator family, with a focus on single-crystal growth, characterization of chemical disorder, manipulation of magnetism through chemical substitution and external pressure, and important questions that remain to be conclusively answered.

A challenge state is associated with superior performance compared to a threat state in a variety of performance domains (e.g., sport, aviation, education). However, in the challenge and threat (C/T) literature, between-subjects variability in past performance is often inconsistently controlled for. Here, we aimed to investigate the effects of C/T states on performance using two methods to control for past performance. Experiment 1 used previous performance statistics in a between-subjects design and Experiment 2 used a within-subject design. In Experiment 1, regression analysis showed that cardiovascular correlates of C/T states predicted cricket batting performance in 45 amateur cricketers. In Experiment 2, between- and within-subject analysis found that past performance was the only predictor of subsequent golf putting performance in 40 noncompetitive golfers. Taken together, the findings challenge the role that C/T states play in predicting performance under pressure after controlling for past performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The increase in repetitive strain injuries to the hand underscores the need for assessing and preventing musculoskeletal overuse associated with hand-intensive tasks. This study investigates the risk of overload injuries in soft tissue structures of the hand by analyzing the pressure distribution and location of peak pressure in the hand during snap-fit connection assembly in the automotive industry. The influence of the surface geometry of automotive trim components the pressure distribution and force imparted during strikes with the palm and the fist are investigated in a cohort of 30 subjects with extensive experience installing trim parts with snap-fit connections. Using the palm or fist (ulnar hand side) of the dominant hand, the subjects struck a simulation device with a flat, rounded, or edged surface geometry. The average peak force applied was 600 N (±122 N), nearly 3 times the force required to overcome the technical resistance of the snap-fit connector (220 N). Fist strikes exerted a 40% higher mean peak pressure and 18% higher mean pressure than did palm strikes. The pressure distribution in the region of the thenar eminence and soft tissue of the ulnar side of the hand did not differ between fist strikes on flat and edged surfaces. Considering the delicate anatomy of the hand, especially the hypothenar muscles on the ulnar side, assembling connection claps using the fist instead of the palm may prevent repetitive blunt trauma to the sensitive blood vessels and nerves in the palm. Ion wind propulsion systems have potential applications in the field of unmanned aerial vehicle due to their compactness, quiet operation, and simple design. Previous studies have focused on the influences of power source, electrode arrangement, size, and shape on the output thrust characteristics. However, few studies have been performed on the environmental conditions, which can be beneficial for the practical applications of ion wind aircraft in various climatic conditions. In this work, a measurement platform of the output characteristics of ion wind propulsion system under various environmental conditions has been established. The experimental pressure range was 1–0.7 atm, and the relative humidity (RH) range was 30%–92%. The effects of air pressure and humidity, and voltage level on the thrust, thrust-to-power radio (TPR) corona current have been investigated. The results showed that the corona current and thrust of the wire-wing electrode array decreased with RH within the range of 30%– to 80%. Under higher humidity, the corona current and thrust tend to increase at most voltage levels. Moreover, the thrust and current both decreased with reduced pressure when keeping the voltage-to-pressure ratio (U/P) unchanged. It was also found that the thrust was roughly proportional to the square of the pressure. Finally, the possible explanations of the coupled influences on the output characteristics were discussed.
