Few studies have explored religious professionals' interactions with scientific authority in work settings. Fewer still examine professionals outside Western contexts. We analyze the science‐religion interface as it exists in Shaolin Temple—an ancient Chan Buddhist temple with a worldwide reputation for Shaolin Kungfu. Drawing on a near‐exhaustive survey within Shaolin monastery and 23 interviews with Shaolin monks, we discern and differentiate two modes of nonconflict operating in monks' psychic lives. One group understands Buddhism and science as comprising independent realms—nonconflictual by virtue of their noninteractivity. Another views science and religion as being interpenetrative and nonconflictual in the sense of being mutually constitutive. These differing orientations, which reflect established categories of "transcendentalist" versus "immanentist" religion, further correlate with different facets of religiosity: Monks with high religious knowledge tend to view Buddhism and science as independent, while monks with high levels of piety tend to see them as collaborative or mutually constitutive. The article presents the discussion on psychological barriers that prevent humans from fully engaging with large-scale events and suffering. Topics include emphasizing the difficulty of sustaining compassion for impersonal others; and concepts of psychic numbing, pseudoinefficacy, and the prominence effect, as well as the exploration of human compassion through the lens of literature and psychological studies.

Background: Research indicates that meditation increases mindfulness and paranormal experiences of precognition, telepathy, clairvoyance, and synchronicities. There is limited knowledge about the prevalence or impact of these experiences on meditators and the general population. Aims: To compare self-reported well-being, mindfulness, connectedness, personality, paranormal experiences, beliefs, and performance on psi tasks in a meditation group versus an exercise control group. Method: This is a randomized trial that explored changes, including well-being, mindfulness, connectedness, psi, extraordinary experiences, beliefs, and ability to impact a random number generator in the participants, comparing a meditation vs. exercise control group. We collected data at baseline, "Mid" or halfway through the intervention (week 4), post 1, which is at the end of intervention (week 9), and post 2, which is two months post-intervention. Data was collected securely online with IRB approval. Results: Data from 72 participants (N = 45 meditation/N = 27 exercise) demonstrated improvement in some well-being measures (anxiety and general health). The study examined the effects of meditation versus exercise on various psychosocial measures and paranormal experiences. The meditation group displayed higher scores in openness and extroversion compared to the exercise group, which was unexpected and required further investigation. The meditation cohort also reported more paranormal experiences, with about half of them considering these experiences important or meaningful. However, the experiment exploring psychic abilities did not yield significant results. While the study had limitations, such as a predominantly non-diverse sample, it adds to the existing body of evidence linking meditation and exercise to positive psychosocial outcomes. Conclusions: The randomly selected meditation naïve cohort trained in brief structured meditation demonstrated increases over time in mindfulness, connectedness, extraversion, and paranormal experiences and beliefs compared to an exercise cohort. À partir d'une situation clinique tirée d'une recherche doctorale, l'auteure souhaite montrer comment les enjeux psychiques inconscients, réactualisés par la migration et le deuil, peuvent entraver la survenue d'une nouvelle grossesse. Le choix de cette vignette clinique s'explique par sa dimension paradigmatique, la richesse et la qualité des éléments cliniques. Cette situation clinique s'appuie sur une méthodologie qualitative d'analyse descriptive de cas qui intègre la « grounded theory ». L'analyse souligne, sur le plan intrapsychique, des enjeux de l'ordre des traumatismes non élaborés et d'une négativité de la relation à la figure maternelle qui entravent le désir d'enfant. Une prise en charge psychothérapeutique semblerait nécessaire afin d'offrir un espace d'élaboration en cas de non-survenue de la grossesse, d'engager un travail de deuil sur les nombreuses pertes (migratoire, père, des fœtus, et de la fonction reproductive) et de travailler sur la relation à la figure maternelle. Based on a clinical situation taken from doctoral research, the author wishes to show how the unconscious psychic issues re-actualized by migration and bereavement can hinder the occurrence of a subsequent pregnancy. The choice of this clinical vignette is explained by its paradigmatic dimension, the richness, and the quality of clinical elements. This clinical situation is based on a qualitative methodology of descriptive case analysis which integrates the "grounded theory". The analysis underlines, on the intrapsychic level, issues of the order of unelaborated traumas (unplanned mourning) and a negativity of the relationship to the maternal figure which hinder the desire for a child. Psychotherapeutic care would seem to be necessary in order to offer the opportunity for development in the event that the pregnancy did not take place, to initiate a process of grieving over the numerous losses (migration, father, fetuses, reproductive function), and to work on the relationship to the mother figure. Near-death experiences (NDEs) have been associated with a series of aftereffects in different aspects of experiencers' lives, including psychological, spiritual, social, and even psychical. In this online study, we explored the incidence of these kinds of effects in a sample of Spanish-speaking near-death experiencers, most from Latin America, who were recruited through various Facebook groups related to NDEs, thanatology, or the topic of death in general. We found that most of our 128 participants reported significant changes regarding beliefs and attitudes toward themselves and others as well as an increase in psychic or supernormal abilities. In addition, we identified a positive correlation between the depth of the NDE and transliminality, as well as a negative correlation between the depth of the experience and the probability of developing symptoms related to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). These results could have clinical implications in the treatment of patients who develop psychological distress after an NDE. Finally, we suggest a possible biological trait that is changed because of the NDE itself and that might be involved in the development of supernormal abilities. Overall, similarity of our participants' responses to responses of participants in previous studies of predominantly English-speaking samples contributes to a growing perspective of the similarity of NDE features and aftereffects across cultures. As the key site in extending the territoriology of Victorian Spiritualism, the domestic séance harboured multiple interstices or interstitial spaces, most notably evident in the spaces in-between sitters and mediums, the various particularities of the séance room (such as spirit cabinets and penetrable walls for spirit materialisation and transport), and the thresholds between the world sitters inhabited and the one with which they sought intimate contact. Notions of interstitial space extended into Spiritualist philosophy when Anna Blackwell wrote in 1871 of a proto-quantum mechanics model of inter-cellular connec-tivity, linking humans to spirits that predated twentieth-century quantum notions of entanglement and nonlocality. The introduction of telephony in Britain further expanded the psychical geography of a Spiritualist imaginary of longdistance communication and provided a new means for spirit contact. In addition, the appearance of the telephone silence cabinet, an interstitial communicative device functioning in a manner similar to that of the séance spirit cabinet, provided conversation privacy through the mediumistic assistance of postal employees. This article contends that interstitial space served as a key component of Spiritualist thought and practice furthering an imaginary of social possibility in 1870s Britain. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Challenging the well-established assumption that memory constitutes a determinant of place, this article argues that memory of traumatic events can also turn place into non-place. The characteristic of this transformation is the difference between past and present that reminiscent individuals trace, thus deeming the latter deficient. Hence, the present state of memory-invested sites is perceived as temporary and transient, a non-place that does not contribute to an individual's understanding of themselves, thus creating the need to bridge the past to a future that enables the recovery of a past sense of place. Consequently, on account of its shortcomings, the present creates an interstitial space that triggers recollection, enables evaluation, and allows alternative modes of emplacement to be envisioned. The moors in Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights and the family home in Danesbury House constitute two cases in point, exemplifying how memory juxtaposes a harmonious past to a turbulent and tormenting present that needs to be overridden. Being interstitial spaces that, respectively, represent the distinct ends of the nature/culture dichotomy, the moors, and the family residence problematise and endorse mid-Victorian norms about place and identity. James Mangold's 2017 film, Logan, offers up a future world in which the X-Men are no more. All that remains are a few old and ravaged mutants, including Logan and Xavier whose worsening dementia is having a catastrophic impact on his psychic abilities that is becoming increasingly dangerous for others. Both of these former X-Men become roped into assisting a group of synthetic mutant children as they run from those who attempt to subdue and destroy them. Principal among these children is X-23, Laura, who has been created from Logan's DNA. By staging this potential daughter along with a suggested queerness of the other mutant children the film seemingly offers up a critique of patriarchal ideologies often at the heart of the superhero genre. However, this article is concerned with the way the film intertextually references the 1953 Western film Shane, which creates an ambivalence in Logan's meaning. The presence of Shane, the article argues, disturbs the surface gender critical storyline offering up instead the sense of a redemptive heroic masculinity that wrangles patriarchal ideology in through the backdoor. Misinformation can have a detrimental impact on our beliefs, and it is therefore necessary to understand the cognitive mechanism by which false information is integrated or can be changed. In two experiments, we worked with fake psychic demonstrations, because observers easily adopt the experience as reflecting a "true" psychic event. We manipulated the availability of alternative explanations by providing a general warning that the performer is a magician with no psychic abilities (Experiment 1) or disclosing afterwards how the fake demonstration had been staged (Experiment 2). In Experiment 1, witnessing the psychic demonstration significantly increased participants' psychic beliefs, even though they had been warned. However, providing the alternative explanation about the deceptive method mitigated this effect. In Experiment 2, the realisation of deception significantly reduced participants' psychic beliefs directly after the performance and remained reduced 1 week later. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Believers in psi (sheep) will use psi to hit a target, but as far as non-believers (goats) are concerned, the conventional understanding is that they will inadvertently use psi to avoid the target. In other words, goats do not tend to psi hit; they tend only to score at chance or occasionally psi miss, and since the sheep-goat effect is sufficiently demonstrated when sheep score significantly higher than goats, little thought is given to the fact that goats are never specifically asked to psi miss. The present study looks at the sheep-goat effect in the context of compliance (from sheep) and noncompliance (from goats). The psi task is five trials at guessing the Ace of Spades playing card while avoiding Ace of Clubs. We administered tests of paranormal belief, belief in luck, and attitudes towards gambling to determine correlates of psi performance. All the gambling attitude scales inter-correlated significantly as did most luck scales. For the whole sample (N = 120), effect sizes were at chance for spade-hitting and club-hitting as was the case for sheep and goats. Sheep and goats did not score differently from each other on either psi measure, and none of the scales correlated significantly with the two psi measures. The spade-hitting/ club-hitting correlation was negative and significant thus replicating the effect reported by Storm and Thalbourne (2005b). This correlation suggests that if participants successfully targeted Ace of Spades they tended to avoid Ace of Clubs (and vice versa), but more is implied—participants could still avoid noncompliance (if they were sheep) or compliance (if they were goats) by displacing to King cards. Also, belief in psi and luck, and attitudes toward gambling (whether positive or negative) do not appear to influence gambling success. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

S'il ne fait aucun doute que les conséquences psychologiques des guerres sont connues de longue date, les connaissances scientifiques sur le sujet se sont accumulées depuis la fin du XIXe siècle. De la névrose traumatique à l'état de stress post-traumatique, de la défaillance morale du combattant à la blessure psychique, nous convions le lecteur à un voyage historique au sein de la Société Médico-Psychologique. En nous plongeant dans les archives de cette société savante dont nous honorons aujourd'hui les 170 ans, nous avons le privilège de vous proposer des morceaux choisis des interventions, rapports de cas, mémoires originaux, soutenus en séance. Ces pépites de l'histoire de la psychiatrie montrent comment s'est construit le concept de trouble psychique post-traumatique de guerre qui nous paraît si évident aujourd'hui. Nous souhaitons également, par le biais de ce travail, rendre hommage à nos maîtres qui, au sein de la Société Médico-Psychologique notamment, ont œuvré pour la prise en charge et la reconnaissance des états de stress post-traumatique. The first descriptions of post-traumatic psychic disorders date back to antiquity. Even though descriptions of a military medical organization have existed since the reign of the Roman emperor Trojan, it was not until the Renaissance in France that surgeons were systematically present on the battlefield. The first medical reports of war-induced mental disorders were, therefore, made by doctors and surgeons. This is how the syndrome of "le vent du boulet" or the nostalgia of imminent danger of the soldiers in battle is described in France by the surgeons of Napoleon's army. With the industrial disasters associated with railway accidents, the term traumatic neurosis appeared for the first time at the end of the 19th century. The publications of the société Médico-Psychologique created in 1847 by Jules Baillarger reflect the evolution of this new diagnostic category. In this article, we invite the reader on a historical journey through five periods beginning with the birth of the concept and its first clinical descriptions, up until the explosion of observations during the First World War. We see how the concept gradually acquired its autonomy both clinically: the association of recurrent memories of the event and the modification of the victim's personality rather than the decompensation of a previous pathology and sign of vulnerability or even moral weakness and on the etiological level: the progressive recognition of the preponderant role of emotion instead of concussion or confusion. Following the Second World War, the pathology of the deportees provides a new description of the concept. At that point, the recognition of the diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder within the DSM 3 due to the difficulties that Vietnam veterans experienced in re-entering society promoted the dissemination of the concept and its recognition within civil society. In France, the RER attacks of 1995 were the beginning of a real awareness on the part of public authorities of the need to deal with psychological injuries. Military psychiatrists then took the initiative and participated in the establishment of medico-psychological emergency cells following the model of the earlier "psychiatrie de l'avant". They also argued for conducting immediate post-trauma debriefings by specialized interlocutors whereas this technique was controversial in Anglo-Saxon countries. They often offered a psychodynamic and comprehensive approach to the cases which was probably linked to the underlying issue of freeing oneself from the moral judgments often too present when describing the disorder during the First World War when each soldier counted for the country. Currently, the approach is evolving towards methods of integrative care provided by military and associative practitioners. The mentally disturbed soldier is accompanied in a process of re-insertion and rehabilitation just like the physically wounded soldier. These nuggets from the history of psychiatry show how the concept of post-traumatic war disorder, which seems so obvious today, evolved over time. If the final chapter remains to be written, we hope that additional studies on this matter will continue within the medico-psychological society, whose 170th anniversary we honor today and we wish to pay tribute to our masters who in particular have worked for the recognition and treatment of post-traumatic stress disorders. Ce propos tente, dans une perspective psychopathologique, de préciser les évolutions cliniques des patients atteints de TSA lors de l'âge adulte et avec l'avancée en âge, d'en apprécier les risques et les chances, d'aborder aussi le vécu de ces personnes face à leur propre vieillissement, face à la mort des proches et face à leur propre finitude ; l'étude d'une cohorte de 314 patients âgés peut apporter quelques données concernant ces évolutions. L'étude de la cohorte de 314 patients adultes et vieillissants permet de préciser plusieurs aspects des TSA à l'âge adulte : niveau de gravité, troubles associés et co-morbidités (troubles psychiatriques, déficit intellectuel, épilepsie, troubles neuro-sensoriels, aspects génétiques). Au plan clinique et psychopathologique, les troubles du comportement y sont décrits en référence aux modes de fonctionnements psychopathologiques dominants : modalités autistiques typiques (notion de recours post-autistique), modalités symbiotiques, exacerbations anxieuses aiguës, fonctionnements dépressifs et maniaques. Proposer une élucidation des comportements défis (ou comportements problèmes) et en rendre l'abord possible ; démontrer que leur évolution, au cours de l'avancée en âge, est plutôt favorable, tout en insistant sur la permanence d'une vulnérabilité certaines de ces personnes. Préciser les principales pistes d'actions en insistant sur la sécurisation spatiale, temporelle et relationnelle, sur la place centrale des démarches de soins (besoins physiologiques fondamentaux, prise en compte des pathologies somatiques, les soins spécifiques par les psychotropes, les abords psycho-corporels), sur l'attention portée à la quotidienneté, médiateur thérapeutique majeur, avec le maintien raisonné de la mise en activité. L'approche, ici proposée, confirme, qu'à l'âge adulte, la problématique principale est celle des troubles associés et des co-morbidités psychiatriques, plus que celle des particularités symptomatiques fondamentales nécessaires au diagnostic de TSA (le trépied autistique). Cela nécessite de dépasser la notion de comportement défi pour aborder cette clinique dans une perspective fonctionnelle finalement révélatrice d'une souffrance psychique, parfois majeure, et de la tentative adaptative qu'élaborent ces patients pour y faire face. Cette clinique particulière nous semble confirmer la nécessité d'un travail institutionnel structuré, seul capable d'assurer la cohérence des démarches auprès de ces personnes d'une diversité certaine, aux évolutions globalement favorables, mais qui demeurent toujours d'une grande vulnérabilité. This article attempts, from a psychopathological perspective, to clarify the clinical evolution of patients with ASD during adulthood and into old age, and to assess the risks and the chances. In addition, the article also attempts to address the experiences of these people confronted with their own aging, the death of loved ones, and their own mortality. This study of a cohort of 314 elderly patients can provide some data concerning these changes. The study of the cohort of 314 adult and aging patients makes it possible to specify several aspects of ASD in adulthood: level of severity, associated disorders and co-morbidities (psychiatric disorders, intellectual deficit, epilepsy, neurosensory disorders, genetics). At the clinical and psychopathological level, the behavioral disorders are described therein with reference to the dominant psychopathological modes of functioning: typical autistic modalities (notion of post-autistic recourse), symbiotic modalities, acute anxious exacerbations, depressive and manic functionings. Propose an elucidation of challenging behaviors (or problem behaviors) and make it possible to address them; demonstrate that their evolution during advancing age is rather favorable while insisting on the permanent vulnerability of certain subjects. Specify the main courses of action, insisting on spatial, temporal, and relational security; on the central place of care procedures (fundamental physiological needs, consideration of somatic pathologies, specific care with psychotropic drugs, psycho-corporal approaches); and on the attention paid to everyday life, a major therapeutic mediator, through maintaining a reasonable amount of activity. The approach proposed here confirms that the main problem facing adults diagnosed with ASD is that of associated disorders and psychiatric co-morbidities, more than that of the fundamental symptomatic particularities necessary for the diagnosis of ASD (the autistic tripod). This requires going beyond the notion of challenge behavior and adopting a functional perspective that ultimately reveals sometimes major psychic suffering and the adaptive attempts that these patients make to cope with it. The clinical work with this particular population confirms the need for structured institutional work, the only thing that can ensure the coherence of the approaches to working with this diverse patient population, one that is diverse, with generally favorable developments, but which still remains very vulnerable. Through a sort of 'journey in time', this work aims to present a brief update on the latest developments on the subject of 'care of the subject' in psychoanalysis. In particular, the emphasis is placed on the therapeutic vision that characterized the early days of this discipline, which was essentially oriented in a single direction from the therapist to the patient, and on its shift to the current dominant perspective, which is different in that it is instead based on the concept of 'mutuality'. In this more recent view, the changes in the psychic structure of the patient over time derive from the changes that the patient has, mostly unknowingly, produced over time in the psychic structure of the therapist who has taken care of and is taking care of him/her. All this occurs on the basis of concepts and models that have only entered the sphere of interest of psychoanalysis in recent decades, for example, the 'Theory of Chaos' and the various systemic theories that have developed from Ludwig von Bertalanffy's 'General system Theory' to the most recent models of interpretation of 'complex nonlinear dynamical systems'.
