The pure component properties are estimated for active pharmaceutical ingredients that are related or proposed for the treatment of severe acute respiratory syndrome-CoronaVirus-2. These include Baricitinib, Camostat, Chloroquine, Dexamethasone, Hydroxychloroquine, Fingolimod, Favipiravir, Thalidomide, and Umifenovir. The estimations are based on group contribution+ (GC) models that contain combined group contribution and atom connectivity index with uncertainties in the estimated property values. The thermodynamic properties that are reported include boiling point, critical temperature, critical pressure, critical volume, melting point, standard Gibb's energy of formation, standard enthalpy of formation, enthalpy of fusion, enthalpy of vaporization at 298 K, enthalpy of vaporization at boiling point, entropy of vaporization at boiling point, flash point, Hildebrand solubility parameter, octanol/water partition coefficient, acentric factor, and liquid molar volume at 298 K. The reported properties are not available in the literature and thereby is an incremental development for reliable process engineering.

Atmospheric chambers have been widely used to study secondary organic aerosol (SOA) properties and formation from various precursors under different controlled environmental conditions and to develop parameterization to represent SOA formation in chemical-transport models (CTM). Chamber experiments are however limited in number, performed under conditions that differ from the atmosphere and can be subject to potential artifacts from chamber walls. Here the Generator for Explicit Chemistry and Kinetics of Organics in the Atmosphere (GECKO-A) modelling tool has been used in a box model under various environmental conditions to (i) explore the sensitivity of SOA formation and properties to changes on physical and chemical conditions and (ii) to develop a Volatility Basis Set type parameterization. The set of parent hydrocarbons includes n-alkanes and 1-alkenes with 10, 14, 18, 22, and 26 carbon atoms, α-pinene, β-pinene and limonene, benzene, toluene, o-xylene, m-xylene and p-xylene. Simulated SOA yields and their dependences on the precursor structure, organic aerosol load, temperature and NOx levels are consistent with the literature. GECKO-A was used to explore the distribution of molar mass, vaporization enthalpy, OH reaction rate and Henry's law coefficient of the millions of secondary organic compounds formed during the oxidation of the different precursors and under various conditions. From these explicit simulations, a VBS-GECKO parameterization designed to be implemented in 3D air quality models has been tuned to represent SOA formation from the 18 precursors using GECKO-A as a reference. Its evaluation shows that VBS-GECKO captures the dynamic of SOA formation for a large range of conditions with a mean relative error on organic aerosol mass temporal evolution lesser than 20 % compared to explicit simulations. The optimization procedure has been automated to facilitate the update of the VBS-GECKO on the basis of the future GECKO-A versions, its extension to other precursors and/or its modification to carry additional information.

The choice of solvent in which to carry out liquid-phase organic reactions often has a large impact on reaction rates and selectivity and is thus a key decision in process design. A systematic methodology for solvent design that does not require any experimental data on the effect of solvents on reaction kinetics is presented. It combines quantum mechanical computations for the reaction rate constant in various solvents with a computer-aided molecular design (CAMD) formulation. A surrogate model is used to derive an integrated design formulation that combines kinetics and other considerations such as phase equilibria, as predicted by group contribution methods. The derivation of the mixed-integer nonlinear formulation is presented step-by-step. In the application of the methodology to a classic S N 2 reaction, the Menschutkin reaction, the reaction rate is used as the key performance objective. The results highlight the trade-offs between different chemical and physical properties such as reaction rate constant, solvent density and solid reactant solubility and lead to the identification of several promising solvents to enhance reaction performance.

COSMO-RS (conductor-like screening model for real solvents) and three different group-contribution methods were used to compute saturation (subcooled) liquid vapor pressures for 16 possible products of ozone-initiated alpha-pinene autoxidation, with elemental compositions C10H16O4-10 and C20H30O10-12. The saturation vapor pressures predicted by the different methods varied widely. COSMO-RS predicted relatively high saturation vapor pressures values in the range of 10(-6) to 10(-10) bar for the C10H16O4-10 "monomers", and 10(-11) to 10(-16) bar for the C20H30O10-12 "dimers". The group-contribution methods predicted significantly (up to 8 order of magnitude) lower saturation vapor pressures for most of the more highly oxidized monomers. For the differs, the COSMO-RS predictions were within the (wide) range spanned by the three group-contribution methods. The main reason for the discrepancies between the methods is likely that the group-contribution methods do not contain the necessary parameters to accurately treat autoxidation products containing multiple hydroperoxide, peroxy acid or peroxide functional groups, which form intramolecular hydrogen bonds with each other. While the COSMO-RS saturation vapor pressures for these systems may be overestimated, the results strongly indicate that despite their high O:C ratios, the volatilities of the autoxidation products of alpha-pinene (and possibly other atmospherically relevant alkenes) are not necessarily extremely low. In other words, while autoxidation products are able to, adsorb onto aerosol particles, their evaporation back into the gas phase cannot be assumed to be negligible, especially from the smallest nanometer-scale particles. Their observed effective contribution to aerosol particle growth may therefore involve rapid heterogeneous reactions (reactive uptake) rather than effectively irreversible physical absorption.

The predicted distribution of semi-volatile organic components between the gaseous and condensed phase as a function of ambient relative humidity and the specific form of the partitioning model used has been investigated. A mole fraction based model, modified so as not to use molar mass in the calculation, was found to predict identical RH dependence of component partitioning to that predicted by the conventional mass-based partitioning model which uses a molar mass averaged according to the number of moles in the condensed phase. A recently reported third version of the partitioning model using individual component molar masses was shown to give significantly different results to the other two models. Further sensitivities to an assumed pre-existing particulate loading and to parameterised organic component non-ideality are explored and shown to contribute significantly to the variation in predicted secondary organic particulate loading.

A series of experiments was conducted in the CESAM (French acronym for Experimental Multiphasic Atmospheric Simulation Chamber) simulation chamber to investigate the evolution of the physical and chemical properties of secondary organic aerosols (SOAs) during different forcings. The present experiments represent a first attempt to comprehensively investigate the influence of oxidative processing, photochemistry, and diurnal temperature cycling upon SOA properties. SOAs generated from the ozonolysis of α-pinene were exposed under dry conditions (< 1% relative humidity) to (1) elevated ozone concentrations, (2) light (under controlled temperature conditions) or (3) light and heat (6 °C light-induced temperature increase), and the resultant changes in SOA optical properties (i.e. absorption and scattering), hygroscopicity and chemical composition were measured using a suite of instrumentation interfaced to the CESAM chamber. The complex refractive index (CRI) was derived from integrated nephelometer measurements of 525 nm wavelength, using Mie scattering calculations and measured number size distributions. The particle size growth factor (GF) was measured with a hygroscopic tandem differential mobility analyzer (H-TDMA). An aerosol mass spectrometer (AMS) was used for the determination of the f44 / f43 and O : C ratio of the particles bulk. No change in SOA size or chemical composition was observed during O3 and light exposure at constant temperature; in addition, GF and CRI of the SOA remained constant with forcing. On the contrary, illumination of SOAs in the absence of temperature control led to an increase in the real part of the CRI from 1.35 (±0.03) to 1.49 (±0.03), an increase of the GF from 1.04 (±0.02) to 1.14 (±0.02) and an increase of the f44 / f43 ratio from 1.73 (±0.03) to 2.23 (±0.03). The simulation of the experiments using the master chemical mechanism (MCM) and the Generator for Explicit Chemistry and Kinetics of Organics in the Atmosphere (GECKO-A) shows that these changes resulted from the evaporation of semi-volatile and less oxidized SOA species induced by the relatively minor increases in temperature (~ 6 °C). These surprising results suggest that α-pinene–O3 SOA properties may be governed more by local temperature fluctuations than by oxidative processing and photochemistry.

In this paper we describe and summarize the main achievements of the European Aerosol Cloud Climate and Air Quality Interactions project (EUCAARI). EUCAARI started on 1 January 2007 and ended on 31 December 2010 leaving a rich legacy including: (a) a comprehensive database with a year of observations of the physical, chemical and optical properties of aerosol particles over Europe, (b) comprehensive aerosol measurements in four developing countries, (c) a database of airborne measurements of aerosols and clouds over Europe during May 2008, (d) comprehensive modeling tools to study aerosol processes fron nano to global scale and their effects on climate and air quality. In addition a new Pan-European aerosol emissions inventory was developed and evaluated, a new cluster spectrometer was built and tested in the field and several new aerosol parameterizations and computations modules for chemical transport and global climate models were developed and evaluated. These achievements and related studies have substantially improved our understanding and reduced the uncertainties of aerosol radiative forcing and air quality-climate interactions. The EUCAARI results can be utilized in European and global environmental policy to assess the aerosol impacts and the corresponding abatement strategies.
