Diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) may lead to several changes in the skin, and some of these may influence the skin impedance spectrum. In the present study we have developed a prototype solution for skin impedance spectroscopy at selected skin sites (big toe pulp, heel and toe ball) that was tested in a pilot study on five patients with DPN and five healthy controls. At the big toe, most of the controls had markedly lower impedance than the DPN group, especially in the range of 1-100 kHz. The separation between the groups seems to be weaker at the heel and weakest at the toeball. The results may indicate that monitoring of the skin impedance spectrum may be a method for detection of skin changes associated with DPN, encouraging further studies with the big toe sensor in particular.

Human skin has been classified as a non-volatile memristor and it is shown that information can be stored within for at least three minutes. Here we investigate whether it is possible to store information up to 20 minutes. Furthermore, we investigate whether the information can be based on four different states, not just two (binary). We stored the information into the skin of the forehead of the test subjects under three different electrodes, which allows in principle for 64 different combinations (3 electrodes, 4 states) and one can think of numbers on the base of four. For this experiment, we decided on the numbers 1234 and 3024 (that correspond to numbers 27 and 50 in the decimal system). Writing of the different states was done by the application of DC voltage pulses that cause electro-osmosis in the sweat ducts (nonlinear electrical measurements). Based on our results, we were not able to distinguish between four different states. However, we can show that binary information storage in human skin is possible for up to 20 minutes.

Non-linear electrical properties of a (biological) tissue can be revealed by non-linear electrical measurements, which means that the applied stimulus itself affects the measurement. If resulting voltage–current plots exhibit pinched hysteresis loops, the underlying tissue may be classified as a memristor, a state dependent resistor. The aloe vera plant and apples have been found to be memristors. However, polarization processes on the electrodes are also non-linear and may affect the measurement. Apples and aloe vera conduct electrical current very well and it is likely that the recordings are actually dominated by the polarization impedance of the electrodes. Here, we study the non-linear properties of aloe vera and apples with two different measurement electrode types. Furthermore, we measured also on the extracted liquids from one aloe vera leaf and one apple, leading to similar results. We concluded, unlike previous studies on these subjects, that the memristive properties originate from electrochemical reactions on the electrodes rather than the apples or aloe vera themselves.

An electrical measurement is non-linear when it is affected by the applied stimulus, i.e. when the measured phenomenon changes with amplitude. If pinched hysteresis loops can be observed in the voltage current representation, the underlying tissue can be classified as a memristor. Several biological memristors have been published, like human skin and apples. However, changes in the polarization impedance of electrodes may also cause pinched hysteresis loops. The question whether the reported biological memristors are real or whether the results just reflect changes in the polarization impedance arises. If the impedance of the measured object is close to or smaller than the polarization impedance of the used electrodes, the latter may dominate the measurement.

It has been demonstrated before that human skin can be modeled as a memristor (memory resistor). Here we realize a memristor bridge by applying two voltages of opposite signs at two different skin sites. By this setup it is possible to use human skin as a frequency doubler and half-wave rectifier which is an application of the non-linear electrical properties of human skin. The corresponding electrical measurements are non-linear since these are affected by the applied stimulus itself.

The intestinal mucosa contains the largest population of antibody-secreting plasma cells in the body, and in humans several grams of secretory immunoglobulin A (SIgA) are released into the intestine each day. In the gut lumen, SIgA serves as a first-line barrier that protects the epithelium from pathogens and toxins. Recently, next-generation sequencing has revolutionized our understanding of the nature of the intestinal microbiota and has also shed new light on the important roles of SIgA in the regulation of host-commensal homeostasis. Alternating current methods have the potential to improve the measurement of electrodermal activity. However, there are pitfalls that should be avoided in order to perform these measurements in a correct manner. In this paper, we address issues like the choice of measurement frequency, placement of electrodes and the kind of electrodes used. Ignoring these factors may result in loss of measurement sensitivity or erroneous measurements with artifacts that contain little or no physiological information.

Reasoned by its dynamical behavior, the memristor enables a lot of new applications in analog circuit design. Since some realizations have been shown (e.g. 2007, Hewlett Packard), the development of applications with memristors becomes more and more interesting. Besides applications in neural networks and storage devices, analog memristive circuits also promise further applications. Therefore, this article proposes a frequency dependent rectifier memristor bridge for different purposes, for example, using as a programmable synaptic membrane voltage generator for Spike-Time-Dependent-Plasticity and describes the circuit theory. In this context it is shown that the Picard Iteration is one possibility to analytically solve the system of nonlinear state equations of memristor circuits. An intuitive picture of how a memristor works in a network in general is given as well and in this context some research on the dynamical behavior of a HP memristor should be done. After all it is suggested to use the memristor bridge as a neuron.

Oral tolerance is the process by which feeding of soluble proteins induces antigen-specific systemic immune unresponsiveness. Oral tolerance is thought to have a central role in suppressing immune responses to 'harmless' food antigens, and its failure can lead to development of pathologies such as food allergies or coeliac disease. However, on the basis of long-standing experimental observations, the relevance of oral tolerance in human health has achieved new prominence recently following the discovery that oral administration of peanut proteins prevents the development of peanut allergy in at-risk human infants. In this Review, we summarize the new mechanistic insights into three key processes necessary for the induction of tolerance to oral antigens: antigen uptake and transport across the small intestinal epithelial barrier to the underlying immune cells; the processing, transport and presentation of fed antigen by different populations of antigen-presenting cells; and the development of immunosuppressive T cell populations that mediate antigen-specific tolerance. In addition, we consider how related but distinct processes maintain tolerance to bacterial antigens in the large intestine. Objectives: Optical fluorescence imaging can track the biodistribution of fluorophore-labeled drugs, nanoparticles, and antibodies longitudinally. In hybrid computed tomography-fluorescence tomography (CT-FLT), CT provides the anatomical information to generate scattering and absorption maps supporting a 3-dimensional reconstruction from the raw optical data. However, given the CT's limited soft tissue contrast, fluorescence reconstruction and quantification can be inaccurate and not sufficiently detailed. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can overcome these limitations and extend the options for tissue characterization. Thus, we aimed to establish a hybrid CT-MRI-FLT approach for whole-body imaging and compared it with CT-FLT., Materials and Methods: The MRI-based hybrid imaging approaches were established first by scanning a water and coconut oil-filled phantom, second by quantifying Cy7 concentrations of inserts in dead mice, and finally by analyzing the biodistribution of AF750-labeled immunoglobulins (IgG, IgA) in living SKH1 mice. Magnetic resonance imaging, acquired with a fat-water-separated mDixon sequence, CT, and FLT were co-registered using markers in the mouse holder frame filled with white petrolatum, which was solid, stable, and visible in both modalities., Results: Computed tomography-MRI fusion was confirmed by comparing the segmentation agreement using Dice scores. Phantom segmentations showed good agreement, after correction for gradient linearity distortion and chemical shift. Organ segmentations in dead and living mice revealed adequate agreement for fusion. Marking the mouse holder frame and the successful CT-MRI fusion enabled MRI-FLT as well as CT-MRI-FLT reconstructions. Fluorescence tomography reconstructions supported by CT, MRI, or CT-MRI were comparable in dead mice with 60 pmol fluorescence inserts at different locations. Although standard CT-FLT reconstruction only considered general values for soft tissue, skin, lung, fat, and bone scattering, MRI's more versatile soft tissue contrast enabled the additional consideration of liver, kidneys, and brain. However, this did not change FLT reconstructions and quantifications significantly, whereas for extending scattering maps, it was important to accurately segment the organs and the entire mouse body. The various FLT reconstructions also provided comparable results for the in vivo biodistribution analyses with fluorescent immunoglobulins. However, MRI additionally enabled the visualization of gallbladder, thyroid, and brain. Furthermore, segmentations of liver, spleen, and kidney were more reliable due to better-defined contours than in CT. Therefore, the improved segmentations enabled better assignment of fluorescence signals and more differentiated conclusions with MRI-FLT., Conclusions: Whole-body CT-MRI-FLT was implemented as a novel trimodal imaging approach, which allowed to more accurately assign fluorescence signals, thereby significantly improving pharmacokinetic analyses., Competing Interests: Conflicts of interest and sources of funding: F.G. is the owner of Gremse-IT.
