Riassunto Obiettivi Valutare la stabilita posturale e l’appoggio plantare in bambini affetti da morso crociato monolaterale funzionale. Materiali e metodi Sono stati presi in esame 24 soggetti: 12, che presentavano un crossbite monolaterale con latero-deviazione funzionale della mandibola (gruppo studio); 12, senza alcuna problematica trasversale (gruppo controllo). Per ogni soggetto e stato eseguito un esame baropodometrico a occhi aperti e un esame stabilometrico a occhi chiusi e a occhi aperti. Sono state valutate le variabili: distribuzione percentuale del carico del piede destro e del piede sinistro, lunghezza e velocita media delle oscillazioni del baricentro corporeo durante la registrazione a occhi chiusi. Per ogni valore sono stati calcolati media e deviazione standard. L’analisi statistica e stata eseguita con il T-test di Student. Risultati Le variabili Lunghezza del gomitolo e Velocita sono risultate avere valori differenti in misura statisticamente significativa. Conclusioni La presenza di morso crociato monolaterale risulta influenzare la stabilita posturale dei pazienti presi in esame.

Objective: To test the null hypothesis that there is no relationship between the posture of the head and the neck and late lower arch crowding. Materials and Methods: The sample comprised 55 subjects (23 female, 32 male), age 12–18 years, with complete permanent dentition and without previous orthodontic treatment. Space conditions were valued by Nance's space analysis on the study models. Craniovertical, craniocervical, and craniohorizontal postural variables were recorded from lateral cephalograms. Student's t-test was performed to assess the differences of the postural angles between the two groups. Results: The results showed that the differences of the postural variables between the two groups are statistically significant. Subjects with more than 2 mm dental crowding had mean craniocervical angles (NSL/CVT, NSL/OPT, NL/CVT, NL/OPT) that were 5° to 6° larger than the subjects with the space conditions smaller than 2 mm (P ≤ .01). In addition, the mean craniohorizontal angles (CVT/Hor, OPT/Hor) in the subjects with lower dental crowding were 4° smaller than subjects without dental crowding (P < .05). Conclusions: The hypothesis is rejected. A clear pattern of association between extended head posture and lower arch dental crowding was found.

Aim To evaluate the effectiveness of topical medical therapy in women affected by HPV vulvoperineal warts, comparing four agents: Podophillotoxin 0.5% solution, 5% topical 5-FU cream, α-IFN cream and β-IFN cream. Methods One hundred thirty-four women with untreated vulvoperineal warts were enrolled. After colposcopic, cytological and histological assessment of HPV changes, the women affected were divided into four groups and treated by self-application of one of the following agents: Podophillotoxin 0.5% solution, 5% topical 5-FU cream, α-IFN cream, and β-IFN cream. Results A 71.8% CR (complete recovery) was reported by patients in the Podophillotoxin therapy group; a 50% CR in the 5% topical 5-FU cream group; a 27% CR in the α-IFN group; and lastly a 34.2% CR in the β-IFN cream group ( P Conclusions The role of topical medical therapy of vulvoperineal warts remains limited in effectiveness, but the use of 5% topical 5-FU and Podophyllotoxin, showed better efficacy compared to IFN. The results obtained were unchanged after one year follow-up, showing that Podophyllotoxin and 5% topical 5-FU can be considered a valid therapeutic strategy.

In questo studio, prendendo spunto da un caso clinico di gravidanza in una paziente affetta da nefropatia da IgA (m. di Berger), si discutono due problemi: il rischio renale materno nelle nefropatie croniche e le "indicazioni" per il cosiddetto "aborto terapeutico". Vengono sottolineate le modificazioni fisiologiche della funzione renale e della pressione arteriosa in gravidanza, la cui conoscenza è indispensabile per una corretta valutazione clinica del singolo caso. Vengono inoltre presentate la casistica personale ed una rassegna della più recente letteratura circa gli effetti della gravidanza sulla funzione renate delle pazienti nefropatiche croniche. Si conclude che la gravidanza non esercita di per sé effetti dannosi sul decorso di tali nefropatie, almeno nelle pazienti la cui funzione renale risulta vicina alla norma al momento del concepimento. La prognosi appare più riservata in caso di insufficienza renale ( creatinemia > 1.4 mg/dl). Infine vengono esposte alcune considerazioni etiche sul cosiddetto "aborto terapeutico" sottolinenado che, già a causa degli attuali progressi in campo ostetrico, nefrologico e neonatologico, l'aborto non trova più posto logico nei moderni criteri assistenziali. Viene comunque richiamata l'attenzione degli operatori sanitari nel costante magistero della Chiesa Cattolica volto a ribadire il valore e l'inviolabilità della vita umana.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effect of a combined therapy based on β-interferon and thymostimulin in HIV-seropositive women with florid vulvoperineal condylomatosis. METHODS: Nineteen HIV-seropositive women affected by HPV florid vulvoperineal infection were studied. Their ages ranged from 19 to 32 years (mean = 26); all were smokers; 11 (57.89%) were intravenous drug users with a mean period of drug addiction of 5 years. No patient was on AZT therapy. All patients underwent a combined medical therapy based on β-interferon administration with doses of 3 000 000 IU i.m. daily for 7 days and subsequently on alternate days for 2 weeks associated with the administration of 70 mg i.m. of thymostimulin per day on alternate days for 30 days. RESULTS: Seven (36.84%) patients showed complete recovery at the end of follow-up; 5 (26.31%) patients showed partial recovery and 7 (36.84%) did not respond to therapy. CONCLUSION: A pro-host immunotherapy seems to be indicated in patients affected by immunodeficiency syndrome.

Acetowhitening of the vulva has been related to a subclinical human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. No consense has been reached about undertaking -or not- any therapy for these acetowhite changes. We have observed from our clinical experience and in a 10 years observational follow-up, that acetowhitening of the vulva regarding high risk (16-18) and low risk (6-11) HPV groups (as assessed by PCR analysis) significantly decreased; and acetowhitening areas negative to polymerase chain reaction (PCR), significantly increased from 53% (202/382) to 85% (276/325) (P

The purpose of this study was to evaluate morphological and biomechanical characteristics of a commercial mini-implant.Orthodontic low head mini implants, in the two available sizes of 1.5 and 2 mm, have been used. The electronic scanning microscope evaluation has been tested on 3 groups each one composed of 4 samples, observed in numerous enlargements and in the three dimensions of the space. The groups were composed of new mini implants, undamaged mini implants observed after their clinical use and mini-implants broken at the moment of their insertion or removal after their therapeutical use.The microscope analysis of unused mini implants has shown how the diameter reduction of the neck represents the area of greater weakness; such parameter is very important in determining screw resistance to fracture. In fact the fracture observed in vivo always happened to this degree. Some micro carvings and cracks were shown on the surface, these irregularities could facilitate or promote the enlargement of the cracking itself.From the results obtained it is clear that the steel is adequate for permanence in the oral cavity, and moreover the material itself is adapted to bear the pressure put on it during therapy. However, it remains advisable to make certain changes to better the surface and geometry of the miniscrews.

Diagnostic-operative hysteroscopy was successful in two cases of endometrial ossification, and fertility was restored.A 30-year-old and a 32-year-old woman presented at our Department with a history of secondary infertility, complaining of pelvic pain, dysmenorrhea and polymenorrhea which lasted for about one year before admission. Previous ultrasound studies revealed the presence of two bright hyperechogenic bands with posterior shadowing.In both cases diagnostic-operative hysteroscopies were performed, displaying osseous fragments which were removed with resectoscopy, mainly mechanically.Hysteroscopic resection should be the elective treatment for endometrial ossification because it allows complete removal of osseous fragments and reduces the chance of residual synechia. The mean objective of hysteroscopy in endometrial ossification is the restitution of conceivement capability.

Lymphangiomas are uncommon benign tumors that most commonly present early in life, and are even more exceptional in adults. We present a rare case of a 14-week pregnant woman who had a large septated cystic lesion adherent to the ileum. Despite analysis by ultrasound, the correct diagnosis was established only via laparotomy and she had surgical resection of an abdominal lymphangioma.

Diabetes mellitus is one of the most common maternal illnesses resulting in congenital malformations. All complications of pregnancy, either with diabetes pregestational or gestational, are directly or indirectly related to the degree of metabolic control. If it is not treated properly, diabetes in pregnancy causes major problems for both mother and fetus. The only way to reduce complications to the minimum and locate them near to those of the normal population, is to achieve a good metabolic control. Multi-disciplinary approach in which obstetricians, physicians, paediatricians are involved, combined with intensive monitoring and therapy throughout pregnancy, could achieve successful results in women with complicated diabetes. This objective is subordinate to early diagnosis for gestational diabetes and planning of pregnancy for diabetic women.
