We present a study of the vacuum transition probabilities taking into account quantum corrections. We first introduce a general method that expands previous works employing the Lorentzian formalism of the Wheeler-De Witt equation by considering higher order terms in the semiclassical expansion. The method presented is applicable in principle to any model in the minisuperspace and up to any desired order in the quantum correction terms. Then, we apply this method to obtain analytical solutions for the probabilities up to second quantum corrections for homogeneous isotropic and anisotropic universes. We use the Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker metric with positive and zero curvature for the isotropic case and the Bianchi III and Kantowski-Sachs metrics for the anisotropic case. Interpreting the results as distribution probabilities of creating universes by vacuum decay with a given size, we found that the general behaviour is that considering up to the second quantum correction leads to an avoidance of the initial singularity. However, we show that this result can only be achieved for the isotropic universe. In this thesis we present the cosmological applications of some proposals from Quantum Gravity. Namely, we will explore classical and quantum cosmological implications of the Generalized Uncertainty Principle (GUP), the Ho\v{r}ava-Lifshitz (HL) theory of gravity and the Swampland Conjectures. Furthermore, we will also present a detailed analysis of Lorentzian Vacuum Transitions in various contexts. First of all, we will present a study of the classical implications of a general form of the GUP to the standard inflationary scenario driven by a scalar field. We will then present the study of the compatibility between the dS swampland conjecture and the Ho\v{r}ava-Lifshitz $F(\bar{R})$ theories. Then we will study the effects of considering a GUP in the variables of the superspace in a model of the Wheeler-DeWitt (WDW) equation in HL gravity. Finally, we will present a general study of the Lorentzian vacuum transitions. We will present a general method to compute the transition probabilities between two minima of a scalar field potential for any model of the superspace that leads to a generic form of the Hamiltonian constraint, by solving the WDW equation with a semiclassical expansion. We will only consider up to first order in this expansion but the method provides enough information to compute the probabilities up to any desired order. We will then apply the method in different scenarios. With these studies we will approach keys aspects of cosmology that are hoped to be solved by quantum gravity, that is we will explore (at a toy model level): the origin of inflation, the viability of the swampland conjectures and a plausible model to avoid the initial singularity. We study the modifications induced on scalar field inflation produced by considering a general modification of the Heisenberg algebra. We proceed by modifying the Poisson brackets on the classical theory whenever the corresponding quantum commutator is modified. We do not restrict ourselves to a specific form for such modification, instead we constrain the functions involved by the cosmological behaviour of interest. We present whenever possible the way in which inflation can be realized approximately via three slow roll Hubble parameters that depend on the standard slow roll parameters in a very different form than in the usual case and that can be less restrictive. Furthermore we find a general analytical solution describing an expanding universe with constant Hubble parameter that generalizes the standard cosmological constant case by restricting the form of the modification of the Heisenberg algebra. It is found that even if such modification can be neglected in some limit and the cosmological constant is set to zero in that limit, the exponential expansion is present when the modification is important. Thus an appropriate modification of the Heisenberg algebra is sufficient to produce an exponentially expanding universe without the need of any other source., Comment: 36 pages, 1 figure. The compatibility between the de Sitter Swampland conjecture and Ho\v{r}ava--Lifshitz $F(\bar{R})$ theories with a flat FLRW metric is studied. We first study the standard $f(R)$ theories and show that the only way in which the dS conjecture can be made independent of $R$ is by considering a power law of the form $f(R)\sim R^{\gamma}$. The conjecture and the consistency of the theory puts restrictions on $\gamma$ to be greater but close to one. For $F(\bar{R})$ theories described by its two parameters $\lambda$ and $\mu$, we use the equations of motion to construct the function starting with an ansatz for the scale factor in the Jordan frame of the power law form. By performing a conformal transformation on the three metric to the Einstein frame, we can obtain an action of gravity plus a scalar field by relating the parameters of the theory. The non-projectable and projectable cases are studied and the differences are outlined. The obtained $F(\bar{R})$ function consists of terms of the form $\bar{R}^{\gamma}$ with the possibility of having negative power terms. The dS conjecture leads to inequalities for the $\lambda$ parameter; in both versions, it becomes restricted to be greater but close to $1/3$. We can also study the general case in which $\mu$ and $\lambda$ are considered as independent. The obtained $F$ function has the same form as before. The consistency of the theory and the dS conjecture lead to a set of inequalities on both parameters that are studied numerically. In all cases, $\lambda$ is restricted by $\mu$ around $1/3$, and we obtain $\lambda\to1/3$ if $\mu\to0$. We consider the $f(R)$ limit $\mu,\lambda \to 1$ and we obtain consistent results. Finally, we study the case of a constant Hubble parameter. The dS conjecture can be fulfilled by restricting the parameters of the theory; however, the constraint makes this compatibility exclusive to these kinds of theories., Comment: 34 pages, 6 figures. The vacuum transition probabilities between to minima of a scalar field potential in the presence of gravity are studied using the Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin approximation. First we propose a method to compute these transition probabilities by solving the Wheeler-DeWitt equation in a semi-classical approach for any model of superspace that contains terms of squared as well as linear momenta in the Hamiltonian constraint generalizing in this way previous results. Then we apply this method to compute the transition probabilities for a Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker metric with positive and null curvature and for the Bianchi III metric when the coordinates of minisuperspace obey a Standard Uncertainty Principle and when a Generalized Uncertainty Principle is taken into account. In all cases we compare the results and found that the effect of considering a Generalized Uncertainty Principle is that the probability is enhanced at first but it decays faster so when the corresponding scale factor is big enough the probability is reduced. We also consider the effect of anisotropy and compare the result of the Bianchi III metric with the flat FLRW metric which corresponds to its isotropy limit and comment the differences with previous works., Comment: 33 pages, 3 figures. The Wheeler-DeWitt equation for a Kantowski-Sachs metric in Ho\v{r}ava-Lifshitz gravity with a set of coordinates in minisuperspace that obey a generalized uncertainty principle is studied. We first study the equation coming from a set of coordinates that obey the usual uncertainty principle and find analytic solutions in the infrared as well as a particular ultraviolet limit that allows us to find the solution found in Ho\v{r}ava-Lifshitz gravity with projectability and with detailed balance but now as an approximation of the theory without detailed balance. We then consider the coordinates that obey the generalized uncertainty principle by modifying the previous equation using the relations between both sets of coordinates. We describe two possible ways to obtain the Wheeler-DeWitt equation. One of them is useful to present the general equation but it is found to be very difficult to solve. Then we use the other proposal to study the limiting cases considered before, that is, the infrared limit that can be compared to the equation obtained by using general relativity and the particular ultraviolet limit. For the second limit we use a ultraviolet approximation and then solve analytically the resulting equation. We find that oscillatory behaviour is possible to be found but it is not a general feature for any values of the parameters involved., Comment: 20 pages, 5 figures. The vacuum transition probabilities for a Friedmann-Lema\^itre-Robertson-Walker universe with positive curvature in Ho\v{r}ava-Lifshitz gravity in the presence of a scalar field potential in the Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin approximation are studied. We use a general procedure to compute such transition probabilities using a Hamiltonian approach to the Wheeler-DeWitt equation presented in a previous work. We consider two situations of scalar fields, one in which the scalar field depends on all the spacetime variables and other in which the scalar field depends only on the time variable. In both cases analytic expressions for the vacuum transition probabilities are obtained and the infrared and ultraviolet limits are discussed for comparison with the result obtained by using general relativity. For the case in which the scalar field depends on all spacetime variables we obtain that in the infrared limit it is possible to obtain a similar behavior as in general relativity, however in the ultraviolet limit the behavior found is completely opposite. Some few comments about possible phenomenological implications of our results are given. One of them is a plausible resolution of the initial singularity. On the other hand for the case in which the scalar field depends only on the time variable, the behavior coincides with that of general relativity in both limits, although in the intermediate region the probability is slightly altered., Comment: 26 pages, 2 figures. We report observations of a relatively long period of 3He-rich solar energetic particles (SEPs) measured by Solar Orbiter. The period consists of several well-resolved ion injections. The high-resolution STEREO-A imaging observations reveal that the injections coincide with EUV jets/brightenings near the east limb, not far from the nominal magnetic connection of Solar Orbiter. The jets originated in two adjacent, large, and complex active regions as observed by the Solar Dynamics Observatory when the regions rotated to the Earth's view. It appears that the sustained ion injections were related to the complex configuration of the sunspot group and the long period of 3He-rich SEPs to the longitudinal extent covered by the group during the analyzed time period., Comment: accepted for publication in A&A, Letters to the Editor

Blood flow, dam or ship construction and numerous other problems in biomedical and general engineering involve incompressible flows interacting with elastic structures. Such interactions heavily influence the deformation and stress states which, in turn, affect the engineering design process. Therefore, any reliable model of such physical processes must consider the coupling of fluids and solids. However, complexity increases for non-Newtonian fluid models, as used, e.g., for blood or polymer flows. In these fluids, subtle differences in the local shear rate can have a drastic impact on the flow and hence on the coupled problem. There, existing (semi-)implicit solution strategies based on split-step or projection schemes for Newtonian fluids are not applicable, while extensions to non-Newtonian fluids can lead to substantial numerical overhead depending on the chosen fluid solver. To address these shortcomings, we present here a higher-order accurate, added-mass-stable fluid-structure interaction scheme centered around a split-step fluid solver. We compare several implicit and semi-implicit variants of the algorithm and verify convergence in space and time. Solar Orbiter strives to unveil how the Sun controls and shapes the heliosphere and fills it with energetic particle radiation. To this end, its Energetic Particle Detector (EPD) has now been in operation, providing excellent data, for just over a year. EPD measures suprathermal and energetic particles in the energy range from a few keV up to (near-) relativistic energies (few MeV for electrons and about 500 MeV/nuc for ions). We present an overview of the initial results from the first year of operations and we provide a first assessment of issues and limitations. During this first year of operations of the Solar Orbiter mission, EPD has recorded several particle events at distances between 0.5 and 1 au from the Sun. We present dynamic and time-averaged energy spectra for ions that were measured with a combination of all four EPD sensors, namely: the SupraThermal Electron and Proton sensor (STEP), the Electron Proton Telescope (EPT), the Suprathermal Ion Spectrograph (SIS), and the High-Energy Telescope (HET) as well as the associated energy spectra for electrons measured with STEP and EPT. We illustrate the capabilities of the EPD suite using the 10-11 December 2020 solar particle event. This event showed an enrichment of heavy ions as well as $^3$He, for which we also present dynamic spectra measured with SIS. The high anisotropy of electrons at the onset of the event and its temporal evolution is also shown using data from these sensors. We discuss the ongoing in-flight calibration and a few open instrumental issues using data from the 21 July and the 10-11 December 2020 events and give guidelines and examples for the usage of the EPD data. We explain how spacecraft operations may affect EPD data and we present a list of such time periods in the appendix. A list of the most significant particle enhancements as observed by EPT during this first year is also provided.

The vacuum transition probabilities for anisotropic universes in the presence of a scalar field potential in the Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin approximation are studied. We follow the work by Cespedes et al [Phys. Rev. D 104, 026013 (2021)], which discuss these transitions in the isotropic context using the Wheeler-DeWitt equation, the Lorentzian Hamiltonian approach and the thin wall limit. First, we propose a general procedure to adapt their formalism to compute the decay rates for any superspace model. Then we apply it to compute the transition probabilities of an Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) metric with both positive and zero curvature, reproducing in this way one of the results obtained at Cespedes et al. We then proceed to apply the formalism to three anisotropic metrics, namely, Kantowski-Sachs, Bianchi III and biaxial Bianchi IX to compute the rate decays for these three cases. In the process we find that this method involves some conditions which relates the effective number of independent degrees of freedom resulting on all probabilities being described with only two independent variables. For the Bianchi III metric, we find that a general effect of anisotropy is to decrease the transition probability as the degree of anisotropy is increased, having as the isotropic limit the flat FLRW result., Comment: 33 pages, 2 figures, sec. 3 was imporved, typos corrected, references added

Based on the well known fact that the quasinormal frequencies are the poles of the frequency domain Green's function we describe a method that allows us to calculate exactly the quasinormal frequencies of the Klein-Gordon field moving in the three-dimensional rotating BTZ black hole. These quasinormal frequencies are already published and widely explored in several applications, but we use this example to expound the proposed method of computation. We think that the described procedure can be useful to calculate exactly the quasinormal frequencies of classical fields propagating in other backgrounds.
