RESUMO A exposição ao ambiente urbano tem sido associada ao desenvolvimento de asma e doença alérgica. No entanto, as associações encontradas ainda geram controvérsia, com alguns estudos a indicarem os espaços verdes como protetores no desenvolvimento das doenças alérgicas, enquanto outros apontam essas exposições como tendo um papel indutor na exacerbação da sintomatologia associada. O presente artigo pretende rever a evidência científica até aqui publicada, de forma a debater o eventual efeito da exposição a espaços verdes urbanos no desenvolvimento de asma e doença alérgica em crianças, com especial importância dada aos estudos realizados em Portugal.

This study aims to assess the airborne bioburden of rural and urban Portuguese Primary Health Care Centers (PHCC) using active and passive sampling methods and identify the potential differences in airborne microbiota between both environments. The highest total aerobic mesophilic bacterial load in indoor air were found in the Vaccination Room (448 CFU.m−3) in the Rural PHCC and in the Waiting Room (420 CFU.m−3) for Urban PHCC. The total coliforms contamination level in indoor air was detected only in the Cleaning Supplies Room (4 CFU.m−3) in the Urban PHCC. The most frequent bacteria genera identified was Micrococcus (21% Rural PHCC; 31% Urban PHCC). The surface samples showed a highest total aerobic mesophilic bacterial contamination in the Treatment Room (86 × 103 CFU.m−2) from the Rural PHCC and in the Front Office (200 × 103 CFU.m−2) from the Urban PHCC. The electrostatic dust cloth (EDC) samples showed a highest bacterial load in the Urban PHCC. Total aerobic mesophilic bacterial load in settled dust and in the Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning (HVAC) filter samples in the Urban PHCC (8 CFU.g−1 and 6 × 103 CFU.m−2) presented higher values compared with the Rural PHCC (1 CFU.g−1 and 2.5 × 103 CFU.m−2). Urban PHCC presented higher bacterial airborne contamination compared with the Rural PHCC for the ma-jority of sampling sites, and when compared with the indoor air quality (IAQ) Portuguese legislation it was the Rural PHCC in two sampling places who did not comply with the established criteria. publishersversion published

The number of microbiome-related studies has notably increased the availability of data on human microbiome composition and function. These studies provide the essential material to deeply explore host-microbiome associations and their relation to the development and progression of various complex diseases. Improved data-analytical tools are needed to exploit all information from these biological datasets, taking into account the peculiarities of microbiome data, i.e., compositional, heterogeneous and sparse nature of these datasets. The possibility of predicting host-phenotypes based on taxonomy-informed feature selection to establish an association between microbiome and predict disease states is beneficial for personalized medicine. In this regard, machine learning (ML) provides new insights into the development of models that can be used to predict outputs, such as classification and prediction in microbiology, infer host phenotypes to predict diseases and use microbial communities to stratify patients by their characterization of state-specific microbial signatures. Here we review the state-of-the-art ML methods and respective software applied in human microbiome studies, performed as part of the COST Action ML4Microbiome activities. This scoping review focuses on the application of ML in microbiome studies related to association and clinical use for diagnostics, prognostics, and therapeutics. Although the data presented here is more related to the bacterial community, many algorithms could be applied in general, regardless of the feature type. This literature and software review covering this broad topic is aligned with the scoping review methodology. The manual identification of data sources has been complemented with: (1) automated publication search through digital libraries of the three major publishers using natural language processing (NLP) Toolkit, and (2) an automated identification of relevant software repositories on GitHub and ranking of the related research papers relying on learning to rank approach.

Urban living may offer a greater possibility to better health care, education and social services, but is also associated with increased exposure to air pollution, outdoors and indoors, loss of natural environments and biodiversity and lifestyle changes. Furthermore, this ever-changing urban environment has an impact on diseases patterns and prevalence, namely on noncommunicable diseases, such as asthma and allergy, and poses many challenges to understand the relationship between the changing on the urban environment and the children health. The overall aim of this thesis was to study the role of the environmental determinants of paediatric asthma. Ao longo do último século observou-se uma tendência crescente e rápida na urbanização, representando uma grande mudança demográfica e ambiental, principalmente nos países desenvolvidos. Apesar das cidades poderem oferecer oportunidades de acesso aos serviços de saúde, educação e sociais, estão também associadas a um aumento da exposição à poluição do ar, no exterior e no interior, diminuição de ambientes naturais e da biodiversidade e alterações nos estilos de vida. A alteração crescente do meio ambiente está igualmente associada ao aumento da prevalência de algumas doenças, nomeadamente, de doenças crónicas como a asma e as alergias e, representando por isso diversos desafios na compreensão da relação entre as mudanças no ambiente na saúde das crianças. O objetivo da presente tese é investigar o papel dos determinantes ambientais da asma e da alergia pediátrica.
