Abstract

Epistemology is the branch of philosophy that deals with gaining knowledge. It is closely related to ontology. The branch that deals with questions like "What is real?" and "What do we know?" as it provides these components. When using modeling and simulation, we usually imply that we are doing so to either apply knowledge, in particular when we are using them for training and teaching, or that we want to gain new knowledge, for example when doing analysis or conducting virtual experiments. This paper looks at the history of science to give a context to better cope with the question, how we can gain knowledge from simulation. It addresses aspects of computability and the general underlying mathematics, and applies the findings to validation and verification and development of federations. As simulations are understood as computable executable hypotheses, validation can be understood as hypothesis testing and theory building. The mathematical framework allows furthermore addressing some challenges when developing federations and the potential introduction of contradictions when composing different theories, as they are represented by the federated simulation systems., Comment: MODSIM World 2013

22. A Codebook for Analyzing Host Communities’ Frustration Within Migration Situations

Abstract

The Frustration within Migration Situations (FMS) Codebook (version 0.5) focuses on identifying host communities’ frustrations in the migration phenomenon in Colombia and Greece towards different actors and sectors. Frustration categories include locals’ frustration towards government, migrants, geopolitics, infrastructure, other locals, and the situation in general. These categories were the most salient during the coding process. Colombia and Greece were chosen as case studies due to the similarities and differences in their migration patterns and similar timing of events. Both countries have experienced significant and rapid influxes of migrants, starting around 2010 and intensifying in 2015. Greece has primarily received migrants fleeing violent conflicts from Syria, Afghanistan, and Iraq, transiting through Turkey (Spindler, 2015). Meanwhile, Colombia has predominantly witnessed economic migration from Venezuela (World Bank, 2021). We are interested in understanding the fast evolution of these situations over the years 2015 to 2020 and how frustration may have hindered the absorption of the migrant population by the host population. The design of the FMS Codebook and content analysis method followed a team-based approach (Saldaña, 2021), enabling quantification and replication of the analysis across coders and settings. Researchers agreed on selecting codes, subcodes, inclusion and exclusion criteria, and exemplar cases. This development phase drew upon the analysis of events reported in two newspapers, one for each country. Search keywords included terms like "migrant," "refugee," and region/language-specific terminology for migrants and refugees in each respective host country (such as "Venezolanos" in the case of Colombia). The coding process adhered to the content analysis methodology described Neuendorf (2017). NVivo 12 (Luminero, 2017) was used to facilitate the organization and maintenance of the codebook components: consensus of news analysis, information about each code, and a comprehensive documenting log of the process. Intercoder reliability standards were successfully met through testing, with a kappa agreement between coders using data from the Greek newspaper ranging from 0.59 to 0.61 per year and a high percent agreement between 81 and 86 percent. To ensure consistency and coherence in the coding process, a third coder worked with Spanish data from the Colombia newspaper, adhering to the same coding structure used in Greece. Regular meetings were held among coders working in both countries' contexts to ensure consistent codebook application and foster discussions on proposed changes or additions. Additionally, given that there was only one coder for the Colombian dataset, the team, including coders from the Greece context, coded samples of the Colombian data to compare with the coders' work and identify potential similarities and differences between Colombia and Greece.

Abstract

Recently, a multilevel cascaded converter fed with a single dc source has been presented. An analysis of the steady-state working limits of this type of converter is presented in this paper. Limits of the maximum output voltage and the minimum and maximum loading conditions for stable operation of the converter are addressed. In this paper, a way to achieve any dc voltage ratio (inside the stable operation area of the converter) between the H-bridges of the single-dc-source cascaded H-bridge converter is presented. The proposed dc-voltage-ratio control is based on a time-domain modulation strategy that avoids the use of inappropriate states to achieve the dc-voltage-ratio control. The proposed technique is a feedforward-modulation technique which takes into account the actual dc voltage of each H-bridge of the converter, leading to output waveforms with low distortion. In this way, the dc voltage of the floating H-bridge can be controlled while the output voltage has low distortion independently of the desired dc voltage ratio. Experimental results from a two-cell cascaded converter are presented in order to validate the proposed dc-voltage-ratio control strategy and the introduced concepts. Abstract

Single-phase power converters are widely used in power applications as photovoltaics and fuel-cell power conditioners. In addition, multilevel converters are a well-known solution in order to achieve high-quality output waveforms in power systems. In this paper, a time-domain duty-cycle computation technique for single-phase multilevel converters named IDM is presented. The proposed technique is based on geometrical calculations with outstanding simplicity and generality. The proposed modulation technique can be easily applied to any multilevel converter topology carrying out the necessary calculations. The most common multilevel converter topologies have been studied in this paper as examples to introduce the proposed modulation strategy. Any other multilevel converter topology could be studied, and the corresponding IDM could be easily developed. In addition, the well-known optimized voltage balance strategy for voltage capacitor control using the redundant switching states of the system is applied working with the proposed IDM method, showing that both techniques are compatible. Experimental and simulation results for several single-phase multilevel converters are shown to validate the proposed modulation technique. 37. Closing the academic achievement gap: A system dynamics study.

Abstract

The academic achievement gap in the United States education system persists despite significant investments and efforts to correct it. Research reveals potential functions – priorities, readiness, expectation and motivation – performed by four stakeholders – students, teachers, schools and parents. A system dynamics simulation is proposed that captures the stakeholders and their functions to facilitate the exploration of potential interventions to close the achievement gap. We demonstrate the development of a working simulation when important information (known quantitative relationships, scales, and formulations) are not available. Two experiments are conducted to 1) identify which stakeholders have the greatest impact, and 2) explore the effect of combined interventions on closing the achievement gap. Simulation results suggest a ranking among individual stakeholder interventions where student interventions have the greatest effect followed by teachers, and then parents. Results further indicate that combining stakeholder interventions at moderate levels have the greatest impact on reducing the achievement gap. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The Modeling and Simulation Community successfully developed and applied interoperability standards like the Distributed Interactive Simulation (DIS) protocol (IEEE 1278) and the High Level Architecture (HLA) (IEEE 1516). These standards were applied for world-wide distributed simulation events for several years. However, this paper shows that some of the assumptions and constraints underlying the philosophy of these current standards are not valid for Medical Simulation Systems. This paper describes the standards, the philosophy and the limits for medical applications and recommends necessary extensions of the standards to support medical simulation.
