The demand for more pixels is beginning to be met as manufacturers increase the native resolution of projector chips. Tiling several projectors still offers a solution to augment the pixel capacity of a display. However, problems of color and illumination uniformity across projectors need to be addressed as well as the computer software required to drive such devices. We present the results obtained on a desktop-size tiled projector array of three D-ILA projectors sharing a common illumination source. A short throw lens (0.8:1) on each projector yields a 21-in. diagonal for each image tile; the composite image on a 3×1 array is 3840×1024 pixels with a resolution of about 80 dpi. The system preserves desktop resolution, is compact, and can fit in a normal room or laboratory. The projectors are mounted on precision six-axis positioners, which allow pixel level alignment. A fiber optic beamsplitting system and a single set of red, green, and blue dichroic filters are the key to color and illumination uniformity. The D-ILA chips inside each projector can be adjusted separately to set or change characteristics such as contrast, brightness, or gamma curves. The projectors were then matched carefully: photometric variations were corrected, leading to a seamless image. Photometric measurements were performed to characterize the display and are reported here. This system is driven by a small PC cluster fitted with graphics cards and running Linux. It can be scaled to accommodate an array of 2×3 or 3×3 projectors, thus increasing the number of pixels of the final image. Recently Lee and Levesque have extended the Weeks-Chandler-Andersen pure fluid perturbation theory to mixtures and have compared the results to the Leonard-Henderson-Barker mixture theory. The results seem to favour the Leonard-Henderson-Barker theory. This and other previous comparisons of mixture theories have been mostly confined to the study of 'zero pressure' thermodynamic properties. In this paper we compare the Lee-Levesque, Leonard-Henderson-Barker and the van der Waals one-fluid theories to high pressure equation of state data for helium-xenon mixtures. This system is modelled by a binary mixture of Lennard-Jones fluids and the hard sphere reference system is characterized by the Grundke-Henderson hard sphere mixture radial distribution function. The Lee-Levesque theory compares favourably with experimental equation of state data up to pressures of 2000 atmospheres. The Leonard-Henderson-Barker and van der Waals one theories are satisfactory. Although the van der Waals one theory yields the poorest results, it does offer the advantage of having the greatest ease of computation.Previous theoretical and Monte Carlo calculations of mixture properties have assumed the geometric mean rule for the mixed interaction energy parameter, ε12, with consequent disagreement with experimental results. We point out that ε12 can be determined from mixed second virial coefficient data and use such improved determinations of ε12. We show that this method yields significantly improved theoretical predictions.

At short range, interaction between two surfaces mediated by a solvent with surface adhesion is calculated in the hypernetted-chain approximation. A smooth monotonic attraction is found when the solvent-surface attraction is weak. There is also significant depletion of fluid densities near such surfaces. Depending on the solvent parameters, the interaction between a weakly attractive and strongly attractive surface can be repulsive or attractive. Extension of these calculations to include a Lennard-Jones solvent also indicates monotonic attractions.
