Open-cast mining of rock materials provides many essential resources for industry and construction; however, it also significantly impacts the natural environment surrounding the mining sites. The most severe environmental threats posed by open-cast mining of rock materials include land occupation and often associated deforestation, changes in the hydrological regime of the area, emissions of gaseous and particulate pollutants into the atmosphere, noise emissions, and many others. This study aimed to investigate the extent and scope of the impact of a quarry located in southern Poland on the growth and degree of defoliation of trees in the surrounding forest ecosystem, and to examine how dust deposition on the forest floor changes. Additionally, the study examined how the quarry affects the development of natural forest regeneration and the species composition of ground vegetation. For this purpose, two 140 -- meter transects were established in the field, divided into four plots, with the centers located at 10, 50, 90, and 130 meters from the quarry edge. On these plots, the diameter at breast height (DBH) and height of the trees were measured, and their degree of defoliation was assessed. The understory trees were inventoried (divided into three height categories), and the contents of Al and Fe (in addition to silicon, these elements are present in diabase in the highest concentrations) in the litter was determined to assess dust deposition. Furthermore, phytosociological surveys were conducted in the plots, and each plant was assigned an appropriate light indicator value (Ecological Indicator Value). The study showed significant differences in the concentrations of Al and Fe in litter between plots, and a clear decreasing trend in the concentration of these elements with increasing distance from the quarry was observed. Trees closer to the quarry had smaller DBHs and a higher degree of defoliation, although these differences were not statistically significant. The number of understory plants in the highest height class decreased with increasing distance from the quarry. The phytosociological surveys indicated that the light requirements of plants increased with distance from the quarry. Overall, this study found that open-cast mining activities affected the surrounding forest ecosystems, and that the greatest threat posed by the quarry operations was the dust deposition on the forest floor. The paper presents concentrations and correlations between Zn, Cd and Pb in the aboveground parts of purple moor-grass (Molinia caerulea L.) in forest soils heavily contaminated with heavy metals around a zinc and lead ore tailing landfill at Mining & Metallurgy Enterprise “Bolesław” SA in Bukowno. Field observations have indicated that purple moor-grass, which occurs as one of the few vascular plants in locations with tailing mud, is probably a species with high adaptability to conditions in contaminated environments. The research was carried out in a network of 20 regular monitoring sites. At these sites, a detailed inventory of purple moor-grass was carried out and samples of the aboveground parts of the plants were collected from the leaves and ears and from the soil at a depth of 0-20 cm. It was found that there was no significant correlation between the concentration of heavy metals in the soils and aboveground parts of the plants in the most heavily contaminated zones. This may indicate the existence of mechanisms limiting uptake of heavy metals by this species, and therefore the need for further research in the context of its suitability for biological regeneration of tailing landfills and phytosanitary protection of adjoining areas.

The present work describes the complexation of the anti-inflammatory sialorphin derivative Pal-Lys-Lys-Gln-His-Asn-Pro-Arg (palmitic acid-lysine-lysine-glutamine-histidine-asparagine-proline-arginine) with Cu(II) ions in an aqueous solution, at a temperature of 25.0 ± 0.1 °C, over the whole pH range. The complexing properties were characterized by potentiometric and UV-Vis spectrophotometric methods. The potentiometric method was used to calculate the logarithms of the overall stability constants (log β) and the values of the stepwise dissociation constants (pKa) of the studied complexes. The percentage of each species formed in an aqueous solution was estimated from the species distribution curve as a function of pH. The absorbance (A) and molar absorption coefficient (ε) values for the Cu(II)-sialorphin derivative system were determined with UV-Vis spectroscopy. Our studies indicate that the sialorphin derivative forms stable complexes with Cu(II) ions, which may lead to future biological and therapeutic applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this study was to determine the spatial structure of vegetation on the repository of the mine “Fryderyk” in Tarnowskie Góry. Tested area was located in the Upper Silesian Industrial Region (a large industrial region in Poland). It was a unique refuge habitat – Natura2000; PLH240008. The main aspect of this elaboration was to investigate the possible use of geotechniques and generally available geodata for mapping LULC changes and determining the spatial structure of vegetation. The presented study focuses on the analysis of a spatial structure of vegetation in the research area. This exploration was based on aerial images and orthophotomaps from 1947, 1998, 2003, 2009, 2011 and airborne laser scanning data (2011, ISOK project). Forest succession changes which occurred between 1947 and 2011 were analysed. The selected features of vegetation overgrowing spoil heap “Fryderyk” was determined.

The quarrying industry is changing the local landscape, forming deep open pits and spoil heaps in close proximity to them, especially lignite mines. The impact can include toxic soil material (low pH, heavy metals, oxidations etc.) which is the basis for further reclamation and afforestation. Forests that stand on spoil heaps have very different growth conditions because of the relief (slope, aspect, wind and rainfall shadows, supply of solar energy, etc.) and type of soil that is deposited. Airborne laser scanning (ALS) technology deliver point clouds (XYZ) and derivatives as raster height models (DTM, DSM, nDSM=CHM) which allow the reception of selected 2D and 3D forest parameters (e.g. height, base of the crown, cover, density, volume, biomass, etc). The automation of ALS point cloud processing and integrating the results into GIS helps forest managers to take appropriate decisions on silvicultural treatments in areas with failed plantations (toxic soil, droughts on south-facing slopes; landslides, etc.) or as regular maintenance. The ISOK country-wide project ongoing in Poland will soon deliver ALS point cloud data which can be successfully used for the monitoring and management of many thousands of hectares of destroyed post-industrial areas which according to the law, have to be afforested and transferred back to the State Forest.

The present work describes the protolytic properties of the sialorphin derivative (Pal-Lys-Lys-Gln-His-Asn-Pro-Arg) in an aqueous solution, at constant temperature 25.0 ± 0.1°C and ionic strength 0.1 M (NaClO4) over the entire pH range. The overall protonation constants of the studied ligand were calculated by the potentiometric method. The logarithm values of the stepwise dissociation constants of the sialorphin derivative were found to be: [LH] = 11.88 ± 0.09, [LH2]+ = 9.96 ± 0.03, [LH3]2+ = 8.71 ± 0.03, [LH4]3+ = 5.49 ± 0.03, [LH5]4+ = 2.82 ± 0.03. The percentage of each species formed in an aqueous solution was estimated from the species distribution curves as a function of pH (82% [LH] at pH 11.0, 68% [LH2]+ at pH 9.3, 95% [LH3]2+ at pH 7.1, 90% [LH4]3+ at pH 4.2, 85% [LH5]4+ at pH = 2.0). The five protonation constants indicate that the studied ligand can be very active in forming complexes with different metal ions. In addition, the sialorphin derivative can also be tested as a bioactive material, which warrants further in vitro and in vivo studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The correct selection of the species composition of afforestation in relation to the habitat conditions has a decisive impact on the effects of forest reclamation. In most of the reclaimed forestry areas in Poland, the stands enter the prelogging period, and it is possible to assess the first economic and production effects of reclamation. The assessment was made based on the analysis of the size of the harvested wood during the intermediate cutting on the heap of the former 'Piaseczno' opencast sulphur mine located in southern Poland and managed by the State Forests. At this stage of development, Robinia pseudoacacia played a large role in obtaining a good income from the sale of intermediate cutting wood and economic effects. The obtained results may be important in the context of indicating alternative directions for reclamation and afforestation of post-mining areas, e.g., for plantation purposes. The paper investigates the usage of LiDAR (light detection and ranging) data for the automation of mapping vegetation with respect to the evaluation of the ecological succession process. The study was performed for the repository of the "Fryderyk" mine (southern Poland). The post-flotation area analyzed is a unique refuge habitat—Natura2000, PLH240008—where a forest succession has occurred for several dozen years. Airborne laser scanning (ALS) point clouds were used for deriving detailed information about the morphometry of the spoil heap and about the secondary forest succession process—mainly vegetation parameters i.e., height and canopy cover. The area of the spoil heap is irregular with a flat top and steep slopes above 20°. Analyses of ALS point clouds (2011 and 2019), confirmed progression in the forest succession process, and land cover changes especially in wooded or bushed areas. Precise vegetation parameters (3D LiDAR metrics) were calculated and provided the following parameters: mean value of vegetation height as 6.84 m (2011) and 8.41 m (2019), and canopy cover as 30.0% (2011) and 42.0% (2019). Open‐cast mining of lignite leads to considerable degradation of the natural environment, which then must be reclaimed. The aim of this study was to assess the transformation of Technosols in an area after lignite mining which had been under 40‐year cultivation of alfalfa with grass at various NPK fertilization rates. We hypothesized that 40‐year cultivation of plants caused morphological transformation of the parent material and resulted in differentiation of physical and chemical properties in the profile of the Technosols; fertilization had an added advantageous effect on their properties. The surface layer was transformed into an Ap‐horizon. Under alfalfa, with grass and NPK fertilization, Ap‐horizons demonstrated lower bulk density (BD) (7–11%) and particle density (PD) (1–2%), and higher total porosity (TP) (18–35%), drainable porosity (DP) (2–94%), field water capacity (FC) (11–21%), unavailable water (UW) (4–17%), soil organic carbon (SOC) (80–142%), total nitrogen (TN) (261–330%), available P (39–435%), available K (32–89%), cation exchange capacity (CEC) (25–43%), and soil acidity (Hext) (42–81%) compared to Cd‐horizons. Fertilized Technosols (1NPK, 2NPK), compared with control (0NPK), showed in the Ap‐horizon an increase in SOC (18–35%), TP (8–15%), DP (81–90%), FC (9–10%), P (110–285%), K (14–71%), and TN (0–18%), and a decrease in BD (4–7%). In contrast, fertilization had no effect on the UW, PD, soil inorganic carbon (SIC), CaCO3, available Mg, and pHKCl. The alfalfa and orchard grass played a key role in the reclamation and soil‐forming processes, while fertilization played a supporting role. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
