8. Composition and antibacterial activity of Achillea asplenifolia essential oil

Abstract

The oil of a wild growing population of Achillea asplenifolia Vent. was studied for yield, composition and antibacterial activity. The major components in the oil were beta-caryophyllene (17.6%), germacrene D (15.6%) and chamazulene (13.3%). In an antibacterial diffusion assay, the oil showed activity against all tested Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa) and Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus.

9. Volatile constituents of Achillea lingulata WK

Abstract

The essential oil of Achillea lingulata W. K. was analyzed by GC and GC/MS. Thirty-nine constituents were identified, representing 84.1% of the oil. The main components were borneol (29.6%), alpha -thujone (6.3%), (E)-nerolidol (5.8%), terpinen-4-ol (4.8%), trans-pinocarveol (4.4%), spathulenol (4.0%) and beta -caryophyllene (3.9%).

Abstract

Essential oil of Achillea chrysocoma Friv. was investigated for composition and antibacterial activity. Twenty-eight identified compounds constituted 91.5% of the oil. The main compounds of the oil were borneol (10.1%), terpinen-4-ol (9.2%), cis-p-menth-2-en-1-ol (8.2%) and trans-p-menth-2-en-1-ol (7.9%). Antibacterial tests showed pronounced activity of the oil against Gram-negative bacteria Klebsiella pneumoniae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. © 2000, Taylor & Francis Group, LLC. All rights reserved.

Abstract

The volatile constituents of Achillea selbica Nym. (Asteraceae), an endemic plant of the Balkan Peninsula, has been analysed using GC and CC-MS. Fifteen identified components constituted 95.7% of the oil. The major fractions belonged to beta -sabinyl acetate and camphor amounting to 39.9% and 33.9%, respectively, of the total oil content. Abstract

The article focuses on the qualitative and quantitative analysis of the fatty acid content of Acinos alpinus (L.) Moench and Acinos hungaricus (Simonkai) Silic herb. A brief description of the plant genus is presented, as well as the different species that are discovered in some parts of the world. The fatty acid analysis was conducted through gas chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The methodology and findings of the study were also presented.

Abstract

Gas chromatography and gas chromatography/mass specteometry analyses of root volatiles of Achillea distans Willd. subsp. distans, collected from wild populations in Serbia, enabled the identification of 185 constituents, accounting for 93.6% of the total oil. Main constituents of the oil were tau-cadinol (17.6%), alismol (14.1%), alpha-cadinol (9.1%) and caryophyllene oxide (5.0%). The root oil was additionally characterised by the presence of five different amides containing the olefinic C(10) acid moieties. This is the first report on A. distans subsp. distans root volatiles and on the occurrence of piperidides and piperideides as essential oil constituents.

Abstract

The authors describe their own system of ultrashort antimicrobial prophylaxis in colorectal surgery. They give an account of two years' experience with their system of ultrashort antimicrobial prophylaxis and demonstrate its effectiveness, feasibility and economic advantages on a group of 113 patients. They implement the prophylaxis of wound infection in colorectal surgery by antibacterial substances which are available in all health facilities in Czechoslovakia. In a group of 113 patients after elective operations of the colon and rectum they recorded, when using their system of ultrashort antimicrobial prophylaxis, 7.07% wound complications.
