High‐elevation, low‐relief continental plateaus are major topographic features and profoundly influence atmospheric circulation, sediment transport and storage, and biodiversity. Although orogenic surface‐uplift mechanisms for modern continental plateaus near known plate margins like Tibet are well‐characterized, they cannot account for examples in intracontinental settings like the Colorado Plateau. In contrast to canonical plate‐tectonic uplift mechanisms, broad‐scale hydration‐induced metasomatism of the lower crust has been suggested to reduce its density and increase its buoyancy sufficiently to contribute to isostatic uplift. However, the relationships between key petrophysical properties in these environments are not fully quantified, which limits application of this model. Here, we develop a series of petrological models that describe the petrological and topographic effects of fluid–rock interaction in non‐deforming continental crust of varying composition. We apply an open‐system petrological modelling framework that utilizes reactive‐transport calculations to determine the spatial and temporal scales over which mineralogic transformations take place compared with the magnitude of infiltration of aqueous fluids derived from devolatilization of subducting oceanic lithosphere. The buoyancy effect of hydration‐induced de‐densification is most significant for metabasic lower crust, intermediate for metapelitic crust, and minimal for granodioritic crust. We apply these results to a case study of the ~2 km‐high Colorado Plateau and demonstrate that under ideal conditions, hydration of its lower–middle crust by infiltrating aqueous fluids released by the Farallon slab during Cenozoic low‐angle subduction could have uplifted the plateau surface by a maximum of ~1 km over 16 Myr. However, realistically, although hydration likely has a measurable effect on surface tectonics, the uplift of orogenic plateaus is likely dominantly controlled by other factors, such as lithospheric delamination. The Lizard ophiolite, Cornwall, South-West England, is the largest and best-preserved ophiolite within the Variscan orogenic belt. It forms part of the Rheic-Rhenohercynian suture zone, and was obducted northwestward onto the passive continental margin of Avalonia (Laurussia) during the Middle Devonian. It comprises an almost complete thrust slice of oceanic crust with sheeted dykes, gabbros, Moho transition sequence, and upper-mantle peridotites, underlain by a metamorphic sole. Despite the importance of the Lizard ophiolite in understanding Variscan tectonics, the origin and age of the Lizard ophiolite are debated. We present new field observations, structural maps and cross-sections of the Lizard ophiolite from extensive re-mapping, integrated with U--Pb geochronology, petrology, thermobarometry, and whole rock geochemistry. We report new U--Pb zircon (CA-ID-TIMS and LA-ICPMS) ages of 386.80 ± 0.25/0.31/0.52 Ma (Givetian) from a plagiogranite dyke intruding the Crousa Gabbros at Porthoustock, and 395.08 ± 0.14/0.22/0.47 Ma (Emsian) from partial melts of the metamorphic sole Landewednack Amphibolites at Mullion Cove. These ages, respectively, precisely date the formation of the Lizard ophiolite oceanic crust, and the age of cooling post peakmetamorphism of the sole. Petrological modeling on the Landewednack Amphibolites suggests peak metamorphic conditions of 10 ± 2 kbar and 600 ± 75°C. We demonstrate that the Lizard ophiolite formed as a supra-subduction zone ophiolite overlying an inverted metamorphic sole, and we combine our observations and data into a new geodynamic model for the formation and obduction of the ophiolite. The Sichuan-Tibet traffic corridor (STTC) is a critical transportation route in China that spans the western Sichuan Basin and the Tibetan Plateau. This area has a complex geological history and presents challenges for infrastructure construction due to its high seismic intensity and extreme elevation. Recent research has made advancements in addressing these challenges and supporting infrastructure development and mineral resource exploitation. The second volume of this Research Topic focuses on active faults, magmatic-hydrothermal activities, and the tectonic evolution history of the Tibetan Plateau within the STTC. Additionally, it explores the diverse range of mineral resources in the area. The findings from these studies will contribute to further geological investigations and resource assessments in the STTC. [Extracted from the article]

Integrated petrological, geochemical, isotopic and thermobarometric study of metasedimentary rocks from the amphibolite‐ to granulite‐facies transition zone of the Eastern Dharwar Craton (EDC), South India, has provided new insight into the evolution of the lower continental crust in this region. Phase equilibrium modelling of metapelites and metagreywackes suggests that they reached peak metamorphism at ~800–850°C and 6–7 kbar (corresponding to a paleodepth of ~20 km), with minor retrograde change occurring at ~700°C and 3–5 kbar during exhumation. U–Pb ages of conventionally separated zircon from metapelite samples range from 2.5 to 3.4 Ga, whereas garnet‐hosted zircons yield younger ages of 2.5–2.7 Ga. Zircon Th/U ratios and Hf isotopes reveal several significant pulses of zircon growth at 3.0, 2.95 and 2.7 Ga. Hf isotope data suggest the evolution of juvenile magma at around 3.2 Ga, while Hf model ages show that the crust building process also involved the recycling of pre‐existing Mesoarchean crust. Our study confirms the presence of a Paleoarchean component in the EDC lower crust, as well as older metamorphic events in the terrain and the gradational distribution of the metamorphic rocks.
