Purpose: Entrepreneurship has become a widely accepted concept in the past few decades due to its prominent role in economic activity and economic development of a nation. Promotion of entrepreneurship can be ensured with the help of entrepreneurship teaching and learning through higher education institutions. Similarly, entrepreneurship skills play a significant role in the promotion of students' intentions to become entrepreneurs. This study aims to examine the role of universities and entrepreneurship skills on the entrepreneurial intentions of students. Design/methodology/approach: Business simulation games is taken as mediator between university role and entrepreneurial intentions as well as entrepreneurship skills and entrepreneurial intentions. This research has used Smart PLS to perform a PLS-SEM technique with a data of 378 students from higher education institutions of Malaysia. Findings: The results of data analysis show a positive role of universities and entrepreneurship skills in the promotion of student's entrepreneurial intentions. Moreover, business simulation games positively mediates the relationship between dependent and independent variables. Originality/value: Results of this research prove that entrepreneurial skills and university support have a significant part in the promotion of entrepreneurship intentions of students. As students use the electronic resources such as business simulation games, their skills, attitude and practical knowledge is positively enhanced and eventually it positively impacts the intention of students to become entrepreneurs. Therefore, it is believed that promotion of entrepreneurial skills in students via business simulation games and positive role of universities in promoting entrepreneurship will have a significant positive influence on the students' entrepreneurial intentions.

Distance Education Learning for higher levels depends on multiple factors which entail pedagogical and technical dimensions. This research focused on an assessment study of materials contained in an educational platform, showing results on the factors causing significant intervention in the ways of learning in Virtual Learning Environments. The study contemplates a sampling for the educational platform operating at the Autonomous University of the State of Mexico. It was conducted following a transversal descriptive methodology, assessment of 19 independent study guides, and analyses of 13 fundamental indicators for each of them. For the research design, descriptive and correlational statistical techniques were used to analyze the foundation of the model. T tests were conducted to understand the discrepancy of those factors that should be showing a convergence. Results showed that there were areas of opportunity in terms of contents, learning activities, activity evaluation with feedback and materials content. The main inference found was that, in order to be able to build a distance educational model, the main components for learning should score a minimum of 7 out of the 10 possible points to be able to guarantee quality education materials in educational platforms. The recommendations include the prioritization of not replicating a traditional educational model deposited in virtual form, implying the support of the integration of educational materials with the Virtual Learning Environments.

Introduction: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), now termed metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), is an escalating health concern linked to obesity and type 2 diabetes. Despite liver biopsy being the gold standard, its invasiveness underscores the need for noninvasive diagnostic methods. Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed to assess MASLD using the noninvasive OWLiver® serum lipidomics test in a cohort of 117 patients with severe obesity undergoing bariatric surgery, comparing outcomes with liver biopsy. Exclusions (n = 24) included insufficient data, liver disease etiology other than MASLD, corticosteroid treatment, excessive alcohol consumption, low glomerular filtration rate, and declination to participate. Comprehensive laboratory tests, demographic assessments, and liver biopsies were performed. Serum metabolites were analyzed using OWLiver®, a serum lipidomic test that discriminates between healthy liver, steatosis, metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), and MASH with fibrosis ≥2 by means of three algorithms run sequentially. Results: Liver biopsy revealed a MASLD prevalence of 95.7%, with MASH present in 28.2% of cases. OWLiver® demonstrated a tendency to diagnose more severe cases. Body mass index (BMI), rather than the presence of type 2 diabetes, emerged as the sole independent factor linked to the probability of concordance. Therefore, the all-population concordance of 63.2% between OWLiver® and liver biopsy notably raised to 77.1% in patients with a BMI

Abstract Background Clinical trials have provided evidence that transplants of dopaminergic precursors, which may be replaced by new in vitro stem cell sources, can integrate into the host tissue, and alleviate motor symptoms in Parkinson´s disease (PD). In some patients, deterioration of graft function occurred several months after observing a graft-derived functional improvement. Rejection of peripheral organs was initially related to HLA-specific antibodies. However, the role of non-HLA antibodies is now considered also relevant for rejection. Angiotensin-II type-1 receptor autoantibodies (AT1-AA) act as agonists of the AT1 receptors. AT1-AA are the non-HLA antibodies most widely associated with graft dysfunction or rejection after transplantation of different solid organs and hematopoietic stem cells. However, it is not known about the presence and possible functional effects of AT1-AA in dopaminergic grafts, and the effects of treatment with AT1 receptor blockers (ARBs) such as candesartan on graft survival. Methods In a 6-hydroxydopamine PD rat model, we studied the short-term (10 days)- and long-term (3 months) effects of chronic treatment with the ARB candesartan on survival of grafted dopaminergic neurons and microglial graft infiltration, as well as the effects of dopaminergic denervation and grafting on serum and CSF AT1-AA levels. The expression of AT1 receptors in grafted neurons was determined by laser capture microdissection. Results At the early period post-grafting, the number of grafted dopaminergic neurons that survived was not significantly different between treated and untreated hosts (i.e., control rats and rats treated with candesartan), probably because, just after grafting, other deleterious factors are predominant for dopaminergic cell death, such as mechanical trauma, lack of growth factors/nutrients and ischemia. However, several months post-grafting, we observed a significantly higher number of surviving dopaminergic neurons and a higher density of striatal dopaminergic terminals in the candesartan-treated group. For several months, grafted rats showed blood and cerebrospinal fluid levels of AT1-AA higher than normal controls, and also higher AT1-AA levels than non-grafted parkinsonian rats. Conclusions The results suggest the use of ARBs such as candesartan in PD patients, particularly before and after dopaminergic grafts, and the need to monitor AT1-AA levels in PD patients, particularly in those candidates for dopaminergic grafting.

Abstract After large-magnitude earthquakes, a crucial task for impact assessment is to rapidly and accurately estimate the ground shaking in the affected region. To satisfy real-time constraints, intensity measures are traditionally evaluated with empirical Ground Motion Models that can drastically limit the accuracy of the estimated values. As an alternative, here we present Machine Learning strategies trained on physics-based simulations that require similar evaluation times. Dengue virus (DENV) is the most important human virus transmitted by mosquitos. Dengue pathogenesis is characterized by a large induction of proinflammatory cytokines. This cytokine induction varies among the four DENV serotypes (DENV1 to 4) and poses a challenge for live DENV vaccine design. Here, we identify a viral mechanism to limit NF-κB activation and cytokine secretion by the DENV protein NS5. Using proteomics, we found that NS5 binds and degrades the host protein ERC1 to antagonize NF-κB activation, limit proinflammatory cytokine secretion, and reduce cell migration. We found that ERC1 degradation involves unique properties of the methyltransferase domain of NS5 that are not conserved among the four DENV serotypes. By obtaining chimeric DENV2 and DENV4 viruses, we map the residues in NS5 for ERC1 degradation, and generate recombinant DENVs exchanging serotype properties by single amino acid substitutions. This work uncovers a function of the viral protein NS5 to limit cytokine production, critical to dengue pathogenesis. Importantly, the information provided about the serotype-specific mechanism for counteracting the antiviral response can be applied to improve live attenuated vaccines.

In this work, we present a modified simultaneous growth and self-aggregation method that produces ceria and silver Janus nanoparticles for the conversion of 4-nitrophenol, a chemical widely used in several industries. The nanoparticles had cerium-to-silver ratios ranging from 0 to 1.35 and well-defined heterodimer morphologies. By controlling the growth conditions, we have manipulated the interface between ceria and silver, maximizing its exposure to the chemical reactants and increasing the reaction rate constants between 2- and 4-fold. Taken together, these results can inform the design rules to achieve better performing hybrid nanocatalysts.

Finding communities in gene co-expression networks is a common first step toward extracting biological insight from these complex datasets. Most community detection algorithms expect genes to be organized into assortative modules, that is, groups of genes that are more associated with each other than with genes in other groups. While it is reasonable to expect that these modules exist, using methods that assume they exist a priori is risky, as it guarantees that alternative organizations of gene interactions will be ignored. Here, we ask: can we find meaningful communities without imposing a modular organization on gene co-expression networks, and how modular are these communities? For this, we use a recently developed community detection method, the weighted degree corrected stochastic block model (SBM), that does not assume that assortative modules exist. Instead, the SBM attempts to efficiently use all information contained in the co-expression network to separate the genes into hierarchically organized blocks of genes. Using RNAseq gene expression data measured in two tissues derived from an outbred population of Drosophila melanogaster, we show that (a) the SBM is able to find ten times as many groups as competing methods, that (b) several of those gene groups are not modular, and that (c) the functional enrichment for non-modular groups is as strong as for modular communities. These results show that the transcriptome is structured in more complex ways than traditionally thought and that we should revisit the long-standing assumption that modularity is the main driver of the structuring of gene co-expression networks.

Chylopericardium is a rare complication after cardiac transplantation. We report a case of a 69-year-old woman with persistent chylopericardium after a heart transplantation due to Chagas disease. Failure of conservative treatment led to dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance lymphangiography and percutaneous radiologic intervention of the lymphatic leakage and symptoms resolution.

Rationale and objectives: Increased central (aortic) arterial stiffness has hemodynamic repercussions that affect the incidence of cardiovascular and renal disease. In chronic kidney disease (CKD) there may be an increase in aortic stiffness secondary to multiple metabolic alterations including calcification of the vascular wall (VC).The objective of this study was to analyze the association of central aortic pressures and aortic stiffness with the presence of VC in abdominal aorta (AAC) and coronary arteries(CAC). Materials and methods: We included 87 pacientes with CKD stage 3 and 4. Using applanation tonometry, central aortic pressures and aortic stiffness were studied. We investigated the association of aortic pulse wave velocity (Pvc-f) and Pvc-f adjusted for age, blood pressure, sex and heart rate (Pvc-f index) with AAC obtained on lumbar lateral radiography and CAC assessed by multidetector computed tomography. AAC and CAC were scored according to Kauppila and Agatston methods, respecti-vely. For the study of the association between Pvc-f index, Kauppila score, Agatston score, central aortic pressures, clinical parameters and laboratory data, multiple and logistic regression were used. We investigated the diagnosis performance of the Pvc-f index for prediction of VC using receiver-operating characteristic (ROC). Results: Pvc-f and Pvc-f index were 11.3 ± 2.6 and 10.6 m/s, respectively. The Pvc-f index was higher when CKD coexisted with diabetes mellitus (DM). AAC and CAC were detected in 77% and 87%, respectively.Albuminuria (β = 0.13, p = 0.005) and Kauppila score (β = 0.36, p = 0.001) were independently associated with Pvc-f index. In turn, Pvc-f index (β = 0.39, p = 0.001), DM (β = 0.46, p = 0.01), and smoking (β = 0.53; p = 0.006) were associated with Kauppila score, but only Pvc-f index predicted AAC [OR: 3.33 (95% CI: 1.6−6.9; p = 0.001)].The Kauppila score was independently associated with the Agatston score (β = 1.53, p = 0.001). The presence of AAC identified patients with CAC with a sensitivity of 73%, a specificity of 100%, a positive predictive value of 100% and a negative predictive value of 38%.The Vpc-f index predicted the presence of CAC [OR: 3.35 (95% CI: 1.04−10.2, p = 0.04)]. In the ROC curves, using the Vpc-f index, the AUC for AAC and CAC was 0.82 (95%CI: 0.71−0.93, p = 0.001) and 0.81 (95% CI: 0.67–0.96, p = 0.02), respectively. Conclusions: When stage 3–4 CKD coexists with DM there is an increase in aortic stiffness determined by the Vpc-f index. In stage 3–4 CKD, AAC and CAC are very prevalent and both often coexist. The Vpc-f index is independently associated with AAC and CAC and may be useful in identifying patients with VC in these territories. La capacidad discrimitativa del iVpc–f para evaluar la presencia de CAA y CC se determinó mediante el área bajo la curva (ABC) de ROC (receiver-operating characteristic). Resultados: La Vpc-f y el iVpc-f fueron 11,3 ± 2,6 y 10,6 m/s, respectivamente. El iVpc-f fue mayor cuando la ERC coexistía con diabetes mellitus (DM). Abstract Photoacoustic (PA) imaging is a diagnostic modality that combines the high contrast resolution of optical imaging with the high tissue penetration of ultrasound. While certain endogenous chromophores can be visualized via PA imaging, many diagnostic assessments require the administration of external probes. Anisotropic gold nanoparticles are particularly valued as contrast agents, since they produce strong PA signals and do not photobleach. However, the synthesis of anisotropic nanoparticles typically requires cytotoxic reagents, which can hinder their biological application. In this work, we developed new PA probes based on nanostar cores and polymeric shells. These AuNS were obtained through one-pot synthesis with biocompatible Good’s buffers, and were subsequently functionalized with polyethylene glycol, chitosan or melanin, three coatings widely used in (pre)clinical research. Notably, the structural features of the nanostar cores strongly affected the PA signal. For instance, despite displaying similar sizes (i.e. 45 nm), AuNS obtained with MOPS buffer generated between 2 and 3-fold greater signal intensities in the region between 700 and 800 nm than nanostars obtained with HEPES and EPPS buffers, and up to 25-fold stronger signals than spherical gold nanoparticles. A point source analytical model demonstrated that AuNS synthesized with MOPS displayed greater absorption coefficients than the other particles, corroborating the stronger PA responses. Furthermore, the AuNS shell not only improved the biocompatibility of the nanoconstructs but also affected their performance, with melanin coating enhancing the signal more than 4-fold, due to its own PA capacity, as demonstrated by both in vitro and ex vivo imaging. Taken together, these results highlight the strengths of gold nanoconstructs as PA probes and offer insights into the design rules for the nanoengineering of new nanodiagnostic agents.

Resumen: Fundamento y objetivos: El aumento de la rigidez arterial central (aórtica) tiene repercusiones hemodinámicas con efectos nocivos cardiovasculares y renales. En la enfermedad renal crónica (ERC) puede existir un aumento de la rigidez aórtica secundaria a múltiples alteraciones metabólicas, entre ellas la calcificación de la pared vascular (CV).El objetivo de este estudio fue analizar la asociación de la rigidez aórtica y de la hemodinámica central con la presencia de CV en dos territorios: aorta abdominal (CAA) y arterias coronarias (CC). Material y métodos: Se incluyeron 87 pacientes con ERC estadios 3 y 4. Usando tonometría de aplanamiento se estudiaron la hemodinámica central y la rigidez aórtica. Summary: Background: Surgical care holds significant importance in healthcare, especially in low and middle-income countries, as at least 50% of the 4.2 million deaths within the initial 30 days following surgery take place in these countries. The Lancet Commission on Global Surgery proposed six indicators to enhance surgical care. In Colombia, studies have been made using secondary data. However, strategies to reduce perioperative mortality have not been implemented. This study aims to describe the fourth indicator, perioperative mortality rate (POMR), with primary data in Colombia. Methods: A multicentre prospective cohort study was conducted across 54 centres (hospitals) in Colombia. Each centre selected a 7-day recruitment period between 05/2022 and 01/2023. Inclusion criteria involved patients over 18 years of age undergoing surgical procedures in operating rooms. Data quality was ensured through a verification guideline and statistical analysis using mixed-effects multilevel modelling with a case mix analysis of mortality by procedure-related, patient-related, and hospital-related conditions. Findings: 3807 patients were included with a median age of 48 (IQR 32–64), 80.3% were classified as ASA I or II, and 27% of the procedures had a low-surgical complexity. Leading procedures were Orthopedics (19.2%) and Gynaecology/Obstetrics (17.7%). According to the Clavien–Dindo scale, postoperative complications were distributed in major complications (11.7%, 10.68–12.76) and any complication (31.6%, 30.09–33.07). POMR stood at 1.9% (1.48–2.37), with elective and emergency surgery mortalities at 0.7% (0.40–1.23) and 3% (2.3–3.89) respectively. Interpretation: The POMR was higher than the ratio reported in previous national studies, even when patients had a low–risk profile and low-complexity procedures. The present research represents significant public health progress with valuable insights for national decision-makers to improve the quality of surgical care. Purpose: The concept of sustainable development (SD) is a popular response to society's need to preserve and extend the life span of natural resources. One of the 17 goals of the SD is "education quality" (Fourth Goal of Sustainable Development [SDG-4]). Education quality is an important goal because education is a powerful force that can influence social policies and social change. The SDG-4 must be measured in different contexts, and the tools to quantify its effects require exploration. So, this study aims to propose a statistical model to measure the impact of higher education online courses on SD and a structural equation model (SEM) to find constructs or factors that help us explain a sustainability benefits rate. These proposed models integrate the three areas of sustainability: social, economic and environmental. Design/methodology/approach: A beta regression model suggests features that include the academic and economic opportunities offered by the institution, the involvement in research activities and the quality of the online courses. A structural equation modelling (SEM) analysis allowed selecting the key variables and constructs that are strongly linked to the SD. Findings: One of the key findings showed that the benefit provided by online courses in terms of SD is 62.99% higher than that of offline courses in aspects such as transportation, photocopies, printouts, books, food, clothing, enrolment fees and connectivity. Research limitations/implications: The SEM model needs large sample sizes to have consistent estimations. Thus, despite the obtained estimations in the proposed SEM model being reliable, the authors consider that a limitation of this study was the required time to collect data corresponding to the estimated sample size. Originality/value: This study proposes two novel and different ways to estimate the sustainability benefits rate focused on SDG-4, and machine learning tools are implemented to validate and gain robustness in the estimations of the beta model. Additionally, the SEM model allows us to identify new constructs associated with SDG-4.

ABSTRACT Resistance to ceftazidime-avibactam (CZA) due to Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase (KPC) variants is increasing worldwide. We characterized two CZA-resistant clinical Klebsiella pneumoniae strains by antimicrobial susceptibility test, conjugation assays, and WGS. Isolates belonged to ST258 and ST45, and produced a KPC-31 and a novel variant KPC-197, respectively. The novel KPC variant presents a deletion of two amino acids on the Ω-loop (del_168–169_EL) and an insertion of two amino acids in position 274 (Ins_274_DS). Continued surveillance of KPC variants conferring CZA resistance in Colombia is warranted.IMPORTANCELatin America and the Caribbean is an endemic region for carbapenemases. Increasingly high rates of Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase (KPC) have established ceftazidime-avibactam (CZA) as an essential antimicrobial for the treatment of infections due to MDR Gram-negative pathogens. Although other countries in the region have reported the emergence of CZA-resistant KPC variants, this is the first description of such enzymes in Colombia. This finding warrants active surveillance, as dissemination of these variants could have devastating public health consequences.

El artículo examina los factores que influyen en la dinámica de las economías de aglomeración intraurbanas provenientes de los distritos textiles urbanos durante el siglo XX, centrándose en el Distrito Textil de Trafalgar (DTT) de Barcelona, especializado desde principios del siglo XX en la industria textil, de la confección y el sector mayorista –industria TCM. A través de una metodología mixta, los resultados señalan que a medida que la industria TCM se globaliza, las ventajas asociadas a las economías de localización intraurbanas se diluyen afectando a la estructura productiva del DTT y dependiendo de las economías de urbanización para su supervivencia. Sin embargo, en la actualidad el papel de las instituciones formales ha sido parte clave en la dilución de las ventajas asociadas a la centralidad urbana que beneficiaba la viabilidad del DTT comportando su progresivo declive. Este estudio contribuye a la literatura al analizar el papel de las economías de aglomeración intraurbanas desde una perspectiva microgeográfica e histórica en distritos textiles urbanos, los cuales han recibido escasa atención en el ámbito nacional.

Lanthanides are a series of elements essential to a wide range of applications, from clean energy production to healthcare. Despite their presence in multiple products and technologies, their toxicological characteristics have been only partly studied. Recently, our group has employed a genomic approach to extensively characterize the toxicity mechanisms of lanthanides. Even though we identified substantially different behaviors for mid and late lanthanides, the toxicological profiles of early lanthanides remained elusive. Here, we overcome this gap by describing a multidimensional genome-wide toxicogenomic study for two early lanthanides, namely, lanthanum and praseodymium. We used Saccharomyces cerevisiae as a model system since its genome shares many biological pathways with humans. By performing functional analysis and protein-protein interaction network analysis, we identified the main genes and proteins that participate in the yeast response to counter metal harmful effects. Moreover, our analysis also highlighted key enzymes that are dysregulated by early lanthanides, inducing cytotoxicity. Several of these genes and proteins have human orthologues, indicating that they may also participate in the human response against the metals. By highlighting the key genes and proteins in lanthanide-induced toxicity, this work may contribute to the development of new prophylactic and therapeutic strategies against lanthanide harmful exposures.

Targeted alpha therapy offers unique opportunities for the treatment of tumours and infections. Here, we report the development of a new radioimmunoconjugate construct that targets SARS-CoV-2 infected cells, which act as viral reservoirs and promote virus replication and infection spread. The chosen antibody selectively binds to the ACE2-receptor binding domain of the spike protein, and prevents the protein binding to the receptor. Furthermore, the antibody has been radiolabelled with 225Ac, and the therapeutic performance of the resulting radioimmunoconjugate has been demonstrated in vitro against cells mimicking SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Introducción. El comportamiento de la resistencia antimicrobiana es fundamental en el mejoramiento y ajuste de los programas de optimización de uso de antimicrobianos, la implementación de las guías terapéuticas y las precauciones que limitan la transmisión cruzada de bacterias resistentes entre pacientes. Desde el inicio del 2020, la pandemia del SARS-CoV-2 desafió profundamente al sistema de salud y, según algunos reportes, aumentó las tasas de resistencia antimicrobiana. Objetivo. Describir el comportamiento de la resistencia antimicrobiana en los microrganismos más frecuentes en veinte hospitales colombianos durante el periodo 2018-2021. Materiales y métodos. Se trata de un estudio descriptivo basado en la información microbiológica reportada por veinte instituciones de salud de nivel III y IV, entre enero de 2018 y diciembre de 2021, en doce ciudades de Colombia, las cuales hacen parte del “Grupo para el estudio de la resistencia nosocomial en Colombia”, liderado por la Universidad El Bosque. La identificación de género y especie de los microorganismos más frecuentes, junto con su perfil de resistencia frente a antibióticos marcadores, se determinaron mediante el análisis de los datos vía WHONET. Resultados. En general, los 10 microorganismos más frecuentes analizados a lo largo de los 4 años no presentaron cambios estadísticamente significativos en sus perfiles de resistencia durante los cuatro años del periodo evaluado, de 2018 a 2021. En contraste, Pseudomonas aeruginosa aumentó su resistencia frente a piperacilina-tazobactam y carbapenémicos, lo cual fue estadísticamente significativo. Conclusiones. Los cambios en la resistencia antimicrobiana en estos años no han sido estadísticamente significativos, excepto para P. aeruginosa, bacteria que mostró un incremento en las tasas de resistencia a piperacilina-tazobactam y carbapenémicos.

ABSTRACTClimatic seasons have been shown to determine the temporal fluctuations in species communities of different ecosystems. Here, we assessed the diversity of spider assemblages in dry, transition and rainy seasons in the “Guillermo Piñeres” Botanical Garden (GPBG), Turbaco, Colombia. We collected spider assemblages between June 2018 and April 2019 through standardized day and night sampling methods for tropical ecosystems: looking up, looking down, beating and leaf litter sieving. In total, we collected 1585 individuals, belonging to 28 families and 112 (morpho) species. We calculated the effective species richness (Hill numbers) to evaluate the changes in diversity across seasons and used clustering and ordination methods (Jaccard index-based nMDS) to identify differences in the composition of the assemblages. Also, we compared the abundance and species richness of predatory guilds of the three seasons. The transition season showed the highest diversity with 94 morphospecies, an effective number of species of 48.7 and a dominance of 32.4 effective species. The clustering and ordination methods grouped the sampling events into three groups, each corresponding to a climatic season. The most abundant guild was the orb web weavers, with the highest value in the rainy season, while “other hunters” were the most species rich. Our results indicate that the spider assemblages in GPBG present a seasonal variation in diversity, probably influenced by climatic conditions. Understanding how these seasonal changes occur is necessary to develop forest management strategies for monitoring and management projects on the conservation of species assemblages according to the Convention on Biological Diversity.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Odonate larvae play an important role in macroinvertebrate trophic networks and are excellent proxies for wetland quality. However, despite their ecological importance, research on odonates and how they interact with their environment is scarce. This study aims to assess macroinvertebrate composition as determinants of larval abundance in Miathyria marcella (Odonata: Anizoptera: Libellulidae).METHODS: 29 samples were collected from six wetlands with different hydrological influence using standardized invertebrate sampling techniques in the Department of Atlántico, northern Colombia. Standardized invertebrate sampling techniques were used in 29 sampling points. Obtained data were used to analyze invertebrate abundance and a non-parametric multidimensional scaling analysis was applied. In addition, a correlation analysis was conducted between macroinvertebrate composition and Miathyria marcella larval abundance.FINDINGS: A total of 2586 larvae, and 12925 individual macroinvertebrates were collected, distributed in 25 orders and 58 families. The most abundant orders were Neotaenioglossa (26 percent), Odonata (15 percent) Calanoida (10 percent) and Diptera (8 percent). Heatmap and scaling analysis indicated different macroinvertebrate compositions in the sampled wetlands. A high positive correlation between Miathyria marcella and the orders Odonata (R2 = 0.84, p-value ≤ 0.05), Coleoptera (R2 = 0.52, p-value ≤ 0.05), Basommatophora (R2 = 0.60, p-value ≤ 0.05) and Hemiptera (R2 = 0.50, p-value ≤ 0.05).CONCLUSION: The results suggest that the abundance of Miathyria marcella responds to the accompanying macroinvertebrates, the composition of which depends on the type of hydrological influence. Approaches focused on the relationships between macroinvertebrate taxa are important conservation tools for biodiversity assessment. Results from this study will serve as a baseline to propose monitoring and follow-up strategies on the environmental sustainability in wetlands in this region.

New insights in the urinary microbiome have led to a better understanding being built of the shifts in bacterial representations from health to disease; these hold promise as markers for diagnosis and therapeutic responses. Although several efforts have been made to identify a “core urinary microbiome”, different fingerprints have been identified in men and women that shift with age. The main bacterial groups overall include Firmicutes, Actinobacteria, Fusobacteria, and Bacteroidetes. Although patients with bladder cancer have a microbiome that is similar to that of healthy individuals, differences have been observed at the species level with Fusobacterium nucleatum and Ralstonia, and at the genus level with Cutibacterium. Different bacterial representations may influence extracellular matrix composition, affecting tumor metastatic spreading and tumorigenic metalloproteinase expression. Furthermore, gene expression affecting targets of immune therapy, such as PD-L1, has been associated with changes in bacterial representations and therapeutic response to BCG. This comprehensive review aims to examine the influence of the urinary microbiome in bladder cancer.

This analysis compares the energy efficiency and operational costs of combustion vehicles (Hyundai Accent 1.6 L and Chevrolet Sail 1.5 L) with the Nissan Leaf, an electric vehicle, under current fuel and electricity pricing in Ecuador. Combustion vehicles, converting gasoline into mechanical energy, demonstrate substantial energy losses, leading to higher operational costs, especially with recent gasoline price hikes to USD 2.722 per gallon. In stark contrast, the Nissan Leaf exhibits significantly greater energy efficiency, consuming only 15–20 kWh per 100 km, which translates to lower running costs (USD 11.20 to fully charge a 40 kWh battery). Despite the clear economic and environmental benefits of electric vehicles, their adoption in Ecuador is hampered by geographical challenges such as diverse terrain that can affect vehicle range and battery longevity. Moreover, the limited and uneven distribution of EV charging stations, mostly concentrated in urban areas, poses significant barriers. For broader implementation, a strategic expansion of the EV infrastructure and careful consideration of the national energy grid’s capacity to support increased electric vehicle uptake are essential. Addressing these challenges is crucial for realizing the full potential of electric vehicles in enhancing Ecuador’s sustainability and energy independence.

COVID-19 pandemic is a disaster and prolonged crisis that has disrupted the education of millions of students with the closure of schools and universities in world-wide. This hard situation rises the necessity to develop a new teaching method to solve the problem of the massive disruption specially to practice work access. The goal of this paper is to set-up an innovative teaching approach for practical work. The comic as a new self-paced e-learning product to teach bench-top practice: the "CoViBE'' which means Comic Virtual Bench-top Elearning. For using comics to transform practical work sessions by distance you should at first list all the steps that you need to perform your experiment. Then, you choose the actors and material images. For the third step, you have to decide how many frames you need to your comic trip to develop the following instructions: How to do, What to do, What not to do and What to ask. Moreover, you need to provide flashbacks to remind students what kind of knowledges they need to carry on their experiment; the final step is to include humor. Using online survey, positive feedbacks of 179 students on the CoViBE impact about their learning of practical work allowed us to determine around 80% of satisfaction. Finally, during any other situations for the training period, the CoViBE concept could be used in the future to complete practical work session for revisions, for the internationalization of this education system through distance work and for a hybrid education system.

Steel cross-sections with thin walls are vulnerable to fire-induced buckling instability, which reduces their load-bearing capacity. Eurocode 3 design provisions have been found inadequate, leading to alternative methods such as effective design strategies and advanced structural models built mostly with shell FE, which can be complex. For Class 4 steel beam-columns subjected to fire conditions, beam-type modelling to predict the Flexural-Torsional Buckling (FTB) strength has been proposed as an alternative approach, but it has not yielded satisfactory results for large compressive load eccentricities. This paper presents two new low computational cost modelling strategies based on Timoshenko's beam FE to address this issue: the Single beam-column Model (SbcM) and the Cruciform beam-column Model (CbcM). The first consists of a single line of beam FE, while the second uses a grid of beam FE for more flexibility. Both strategies effectively simulate the FTB behaviour in Class 4 steel beam-column during a fire, offering quicker computations compared to shell models. Still, the single-line model is favoured for its simplicity, making it more efficient in analysing complex fire engineering problems.

Weaning is a stressful period in a piglet’s life, when many morphological and functional changes occur in the gastrointestinal tract. Examples are an alteration of the barrier function and an increase in production of cytokines, suggesting the immune system of the GIT is activated after weaning. The goal of this study was to evaluate the effect of a commercially available feed additive based on short and medium chain fatty acids on supporting intestinal health and reduce inflammation in the intestine of post-weaning piglets. Seventy piglets were divided over 2 treatments, a control diet and a blend of short and medium chain fatty acids, including butyrate. On day 0, 15, 30 and 45 after weaning blood samples and intestinal tissue samples were collected from sacrificed piglets. Blood and tissue samples were analysed for cytokine gene expression, and tissue samples from jejunum and ileum were analysed on morphology and gene expression of tight junctions. Results show that the use of a blend of short and medium chain fatty acids, including butyrates, improved intestinal morphology, measured by villous length and v/c ratio, reduced expression of tight junction proteins and influenced cytokine production in the intestine, implicating that the use of organic acids as feed additives potentially can reduce damage caused by weaning to the intestinal barrier and due to the higher absorption capacity of the villi potentially improve nutrient absorption.
