Abstract

Isomer spectroscopy of heavy neutron-rich nuclei beyond the N=126 closed shell has been performed for the first time at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory of the RIKEN Nishina Center. New millisecond isomers have been identified at low excitation energies, 985.3(19) keV in 213Tl and 874(5) keV in 215Tl. The measured half-lives of 1.34(5) ms in 213Tl and 3.0(3) ms in 215Tl suggest spins and parities 11/2- with the single proton-hole configuration h11/2 as leading component. They are populated via E1 transitions by the decay of higher-lying isomeric states with proposed spin and parity 17/2+, interpreted as arising from a single s1/2 proton hole coupled to the 8+ seniority isomer in the (A+1)Pb cores. The lowering of the 11/2- states is ascribed to an increase of the h11/2 proton effective single-particle energy as the second g9/2 orbital is filled by neutrons, owing to a significant reduction of the proton-neutron monopole interaction between the h11/2 and g9/2 orbitals. The new ms-isomers provide the first experimental observation of shell evolution in the almost unexplored N>126 nuclear region below doubly-magic 208Pb., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, 1 table

Abstract

miniBELEN-10A is a modular and transportable moderated neutron counter with a nearly flat detection efficiency up to 8 MeV. The detector was designed to carry out measurements of (alpha, n) reactions in the context of the Measurement of Alpha Neutron Yields (MANY) project. In this work we present the results of the commissioning of miniBELEN-10A using the relatively well-known thick-target neutron yields from 27Al(alpha, n)30P.

Abstract

miniBELEN is a modular and transportable neutron moderated counter with a nearly flat neutron detection efficiency up to 10 MeV. Modularity implies that the moderator can be reassembled in different ways in order to obtain different types of response. The detector has been developed in the context of the Measurement of Alpha Neutron Yields (MANY) collaboration, which is a scientific effort aiming to carry out measurements of (alpha,n) production yields, reaction cross-sections and neutron energy spectra. In this work we present and discuss several configurations of the miniBELEN detector. The experimental validation of the efficiency calculations using 252Cf sources and the measurement of the 27Al(alpha,n)30P reaction is also presented., Comment: 15th International Conference on Nuclear Data for Science and Technology (ND2022)

4. A novel modular neutron long counter for ({\alpha},n) reactions

Abstract

In this work, we present the design of a new modular and transportable neutron detector for ({\alpha},n) reactions. The detector is based on the use of several 3He-filled proportional counters embedded in high density polyethylene. In order to provide the detector with a response independent of the neutron energy, a flat response, an innovative design methodology has been applied. The method is based on the optimization of the counters contribution to the total efficiency by using thermal neutron absorbers. This allows to obtain flat responses up to 10 MeV. The characterization of a proof-of-concept prototype detector is presented. Abstract

Beta-delayed neutron emission plays a fundamental role in the explosive nucleosynthesis of elements heavier than iron by the rapid neutron capture (r-process). The most ambitious project related to beta-delayed neutron detection of very exotic nuclei is carried out by the BRIKEN collaboration at RIKEN Nishima Center. In this work, a brief description of the BRIKEN project is presented. A methodology for the precise characterization of the BRIKEN neutron counter efficiency, for fast neutrons, using an uncalibrated 252Cf neutron source is described. The method relies on the well-known neutron multiplicity distribution of such source and correlation counting method. A detailed experimental study with the BRIKEN neutron counter and a 252 Cf neutron source at the RIKEN Nishina center is presented. The HENSA/ANAIS collaboration aims for the precise determination of the neutron flux that could affect ANAIS-112, an experiment looking for the dark matter annual modulation using NaI(Tl) scintillators. In this work, the first measurements of the neutron flux and Monte Carlo simulations of the neutron spectrum are reported.

Abstract

Despite the idea that thunderclouds can produce nuclear reactions was proposed almost 100 years ago [Wilson, 1925], evidences of high energetic emissions coming from thunderstorms have been found in the last ~30 years. The discovery of Terrestrial Gamma-ray Flashes [Fishman et al, 1994], gamma emissions [Moore et al., 2001] and neutron emissions from lightning [e.g. Saha et al., 1985, Enoto et al., 2017] encouraged the atmospheric electricity community to investigate the source of these emissions in a laboratory-controlled environment. Numerous works have focused on the investigation of gamma emissions from high voltage laboratory long sparks [e.g. March et al, 2010,2011]. Until recently, neutrons have been reported to be detected in laboratory sparks [Agafanov, 2013, 2017].In this work, we investigate the production of neutron and gamma bursts in a laboratory-scale. A total of 259 sparks were produced with voltages up to 1.1 MV, at several rise times, with different electrodes and gaps. To detect neutron bursts an array of fast neutrons counters with a nearly flat neutron detection efficiency (0.1-10) MeV is used. The yield detection limit from the discharge zone as low as 500 n/burst/4pi. The gamma is detected using lead shielded scintillators. The experimental results are discussed and compared with recent studies of neutron production in HV atmospheric discharges [Agafanov, 2017; Štěpánová, 2022]., The 28th IUGG General Assembly (IUGG2023) (Berlin 2023)

The DEcay SPECtroscopy (DESPEC) setup for nuclear structure investigations was developed and commissioned at GSI, Germany in preparation for a full campaign of experiments at the FRS and Super-FRS. In this paper, we report on the first employment of the setup in the hybrid configuration with the AIDA implanter coupled to the FATIMA LaBr3(Ce) fast-timing array, and high-purity germanium detectors. Initial results are shown from the first experiments carried out with the setup. An overview of the setup and function is discussed, including technical advancements along the path. © 2022 Elsevier B.V.

Abstract

The β -delayed neutron-emission probabilities of 28 exotic neutron-rich isotopes of Pm, Sm, Eu, and Gd were measured for the first time at RIKEN Nishina Center using the Advanced Implantation Detector Array (AIDA) and the BRIKEN neutron detector array. The existing β -decay half-life (T 1/2) database was significantly increased toward more neutron-rich isotopes, and uncertainties for previously measured values were decreased. The new data not only constrain the theoretical predictions of half-lives and β -delayed neutron-emission probabilities, but also allow for probing the mechanisms of formation of the high-mass wing of the rare-earth peak located at A ≈ 160 in the r -process abundance distribution through astrophysical reaction network calculations. An uncertainty quantification of the calculated abundance patterns with the new data shows a reduction of the uncertainty in the rare-earth peak region. The newly introduced variance-based sensitivity analysis method offers valuable insight into the influence of important nuclear physics inputs on the calculated abundance patterns. The analysis has identified the half-lives of 168Sm and of several gadolinium isotopes as some of the key variables among the current experimental data to understand the remaining abundance uncertainty at A = 167â€"172. Abstract

In both the current and foreseen context of significant development of the electric vehicle (EV) fleet, a future increasing ratio of EVs in the urban traffic is expected, still enhanced in low-emission zones involving bans or restricted access to other vehicles. EVs are known to be quieter than conventional vehicles at low speed because of a low motor noise emission, resulting in a higher prevalence of rolling noise in the environmental noise. EVs differ from conventional vehicles in several parameters that can influence tyre/road noise, like weight and torque. The LIFE E-VIA project objectives consist in developing, implementing and assessing a low-noise road surface for light EV traffic in urban conditions, optimised from an acoustical and life cycle perspective. In parallel, an optimisation of EV tyres is investigated.

Abstract

Introdução: A simulação possibilita o ensino e treino de técnicas de suporte de vida complexas sem riscos para o doente. Até ao momento, as únicas opções de treino no manuseamento de terapêuticas de depuração extra-renal contínua (TDEC) eram a aprendizagem directa em doentes submetidos a esta técnica ou mediante observação dos efeitos da manipulação do circuito não conectado ao doente. Por este motivo foi elaborado um simulador de TDEC, usado em cursos de simulação realizados para treino de equipas de cuidados intensivos pediátricos (UCIP). Objectivos: Analisar a performance e utilidade de um novo simulador que possibilita o controlo externo do dispositivo de TDEC, simulando "in situ" cenários que mimetizam condições de doentes tratados com TDEC. Métodos: Foi criado um dispositivo que, uma vez conectado ao aparelho de TDEC, permite o controlo em tempo real de todas as pressões de hemofiltração, de acordo com as condições clínicas e acções dos participantes. Foram simulados diversos cenários e complicações possíveis em doentes submetidos a estas técnicas e avaliada a performance deste dispositivo "in vitro". A satisfação dos participantes foi avaliada mediante a aplicação de um inquérito. Resultados: Foram realizados 4 cursos de TDEC de Maio de 2009 a Março de 2012. Incluídos 60 participantes, todos com experiência clínica prévia em UCIP. Realizados 32 cenários, abrangendo complicações relacionados com o cateter, coagulação dos filtros e ajuste inadequado dos parâmetros de hemofiltração. Nos cenários simulados, o dispositivo simulador permitiu, em tempo real, mudanças simples e rápidas nas pressões do monitor de TDEC e em resposta às atitudes tomadas pelos participantes para a sua resolução. Não foram registadas intercorrências relacionadas com disfunção do dispositivo. Os participantes consideraram-no muito útil como ferramenta de aprendizagem activa, permitindo uma gestão realista das condições clínicas simuladas, com potencial impacto sobre a sua futura prática diária. Os instrutores consideraram-no fácil de manusear e realista. Conclusões: Este simulador permite uma simulação mais fidedigna dos cenários de TDEC, resolvendo o problema da interferência do instrutor no cenário simulado. Este poderia melhorar as capacidades dos simuladores de alta fidelidade disponíveis e utilizar-se como uma ferramenta docente na formação de profissionais de saúde.

Abstract

Senescence-accelerated mice (SAM) represent an aging model establish by selective inbreeding of the AKR/J strain. SAMP8 is a suitable model to study the genetics or proteics fundamental mechanisms of aging, in physiological or pathological conditions, because SAMP8 develop neuropathological markers also found in neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer. Melatonin is known as sleep hormone because its action controlling the sleep/awake circadian rhythm. Moreover, melatonin has antioxidant properties and may have an important anti-aging role. The chronic treatment with melatonin in the SAMP8 model was able to reduce oxidative stress and the neurodegenerative calpain/Cdk5 pathway and primed phosphorylation of GSK3beta and tau hiperphosphorylation markers of cerebral aging and neurodegeneration in SAMP8 brains, indicating the neuroprotective and anti-aging effect of melatonin.
