Search

Vacancies exist throughout nature and determine the physical properties of materials. By manipulating the density and distribution of vacancies, it is possible to influence their physical properties such as band-gap, conductivity, magnetism, etc. This can generate exciting applications in the fields of water treatment, energy storage, and physical devices such as resistance-change memories. In this review, we focus on recent progress in vacancy engineering for the design of materials for energy harvesting applications. A brief discription of the concept of vacancies, the way to create and control them, as well as their fundamental properties, is first provided. Then, emphasis is placed on the strategies used to tailor vacancies for metal-insulator transitions, electronic structures, and introducing magnetism in non-magnetic materials. Finally, we present representative applications of different structures with vacancies as active electrode materials of lithium or sodium ion batteries, catalysts for water splitting, and hydrogen evolution.

High-quality single crystals of perovskite-like (CH 3 NH 3 ) 3 Bi 2 I 9 hybrids have been synthesized, using a layered-solution crystal-growth technique. The large dielectric constant is strongly affected by the polar ordering of its constituents. Progressive dipolar ordering of the methylammonium cation upon cooling below 300 K gradually converts the hexagonal structure (space group P6 3 /mmc) into a monoclinic phase (C2/c) at 160 K. A well-pronounced, ferrielectric phase transition at 143 K is governed by in-plane ordering of the bismuth lone pair that breaks inversion symmetry and results in a polar phase (space group P2 1 ). The dielectric constant is markedly higher in the C2/c phase above this transition. Here, the bismuth lone pair is disordered in-plane, allowing the polarizability to be substantially enhanced. Density functional theory calculations estimate a large ferroelectric polarization of 7.94 μC/cm 2 along the polar axis in the P2 1 phase. The calculated polarization has almost equal contributions of the methylammonium and Bi 3+ lone pair, which are fairly decoupled.

Fe 7 Se 8 exists as a hexagonal NiAs-like crystal structure with a large number of ordered intrinsic vacancies. It is an ideal candidate for studying the effect of defects on properties such as magnetism and electrical transport. In this work, highly crystalline Fe 7 Se 8 with the 3c crystal structure was synthesized by a solid-state reaction. Sharp changes in the magnetization at 100 K confirm a rotation of the spins from the ab plane to the c axis with decreasing temperature. We observe an interesting metal-insulator transition at the same temperature as the spin-direction changes. We propose that locked spins in the grain boundaries induce electron localization and result in the metal-insulator transition. Electron localization is confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy of the Fe 2p peaks, which exhibit two characteristic satellite peaks. This mechanism is also verified by comparing it with the properties of the 4c-Fe 7 Se 8 crystal structure.

First-order Raman scattering and multiphonons are studied in RVO3 (R  =  Ho and Y) as a function of temperature in the orthorhombic and monoclinic phases. Raman spectra of HoVO3 and YVO3 unveil similar features since both compounds have nearly identical R-radii. However, the most important difference lies in the transition temperature involving the V(3+) orbitals, the V(3+) magnetic moments as well as the crystallographic structure. Particularly, the magnetic and orbital reorientations occur at T N2  =  40 K for HoVO3 instead T N2  =77 K in the case of YVO3. For both systems, anomalous phonon shifts which are related to spin-phonon coupling are observed below the V(3+) magnetic ordering temperature (T N1  ≈  110 K) while additional phonon anomalies are exclusively observed in HoVO3 around T (*)  ≈  15 K. On the other hand, infrared (IR) transmittance measurements as a function of temperature reveal Ho(3+5)I8  →  (5)I7 excitations and additional excitations assigned as vibronics. These latter combined with drastic changes in Ho(3+5)I8  →  (5)I7 excitations at T N2, are indicative of a strong coupling between the Ho(3+) ions and the ligand field. This could explain the large magnetocaloric capacity shown by HoVO3.

Liquid crystals are widely used in displays for portable electronic information display. To broaden their scope for other applications like smart windows and tags, new material properties such as polarizer-free operation and tunable memory of a written state become important. Here, we describe an anhydrous nanoDNA-surfactant thermotropic liquid crystal system, which exhibits distinctive electrically controlled optical absorption, and temperature-dependent memory. In the liquid crystal isotropic phase, electric field-induced colouration and bleaching have a switching time of seconds. Upon transition to the smectic liquid crystal phase, optical memory of the written state is observed for many hours without applied voltage. The reorientation of the DNA-surfactant lamellar layers plays an important role in preventing colour decay. Thereby, the volatility of optoelectronic state can be controlled simply by changing the phase of the material. This research may pave the way for developing a new generation of DNA-based, phase-modulated, photoelectronic devices.

Perovskite-based organic-inorganic hybrids hold great potential as active layers in electronics or optoelectronics or as components of biosensors. However, many of these applications require thin films grown with good control over structure and thickness--a major challenge that needs to be addressed. The work presented here is an effort towards this goal and concerns the layer-by-layer deposition at ambient conditions of ferromagnetic organic-inorganic hybrids consisting of alternating CuCl4-octahedra and organic layers. The Langmuir-Blodgett technique used to assemble these structures provides intrinsic control over the molecular organization and film thickness down to the molecular level. Magnetic characterization reveals that the coercive field for these thin films is larger than that for solution-grown layered bulk crystals. The strategy presented here suggests a promising cost effective route to facilitate the excellently controlled growth of sophisticated materials on a wide variety of substrates that have properties relevant for the high density storage media and spintronic devices., (© 2014 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Resonant ultrasound spectroscopy has been used to measure the elastic and anelastic behaviour through known structural and magnetic phase transitions in single crystal hexagonal YMnO3. Anomalous elastic behaviour is observed at the high temperature structural transition at ∼1260 K, with a discontinuity in the elastic constants and nonlinear recovery below Tc, consistent with [Formula: see text] coupling. There is no change in dissipation associated with this high temperature transition, and no evidence in the elastic or anelastic behaviour for any secondary transition at ∼920 K, thus supporting the thesis of a single high temperature transformation. Elastic stiffening is observed on cooling through TN, in accordance with previous studies, and the excess elastic constant appears to scale with the square of the magnetic order parameter. The strains incurred at TN are a factor of ∼20 smaller than those at the structural transition, implying very weak [Formula: see text] coupling and a dominant contribution to the variation in the elastic constants from [Formula: see text]. The increased acoustic dissipation above TN is consistent with an order-disorder process.

We have synthesized members of an isostructural solid solution series KxBa1-xO2-δ (x < 0.41, δ < 0.11) containing mixed-valent dioxygen anions. Synthesis in liquid ammonia solution allows a continuous range of compounds to be prepared. X-ray and neutron diffraction show that KxBa1-xO2-δ adopts the tetragonal rocksalt-derived structure of the end members KO2 and BaO2, without any structural phase transition down to 5 K, the lowest temperature studied here. We identify four oxygen-oxygen stretching modes above 750 cm(-1) in the measured Raman spectra, unlike the spectra of KO2 and BaO2 which both contain just a single mode. We use density functional theory calculations to show that the stretching modes in KxBa1-xO2-δ arise from in-phase and anti-phase coupling of the stretching of nearest-neighbor oxygen dimers when the valence state of the dimers lies between -1 and -2 because of mixed cation coordination. This coupling is a direct signature of a novel type of anionogenic mixed valency.

The hybrid material copper (II) tetrachloro-bis(phenyl ethyl ammonium) (C6H5CH2CH2NH3)2CuCl4, or PEACuCl, has been investigated by temperature-dependent spectroscopic absorption experiments. The absorption bands observed in the near-infrared region (1.3-1.9 eV) generally exhibit redshifts with increasing temperature. The temperature-induced energy shifts of the spectral components are shown to be consistently related to temperature-induced Cu-Cl bond length changes. Additionally, the thermochromic color change is caused by a charge transfer band edge redshifting (in the visible region 2.0-2.8 eV) with increasing temperature. By comparison with similar Cu-based systems, it is suggested that this shift is caused by broadening and strengthening of the band.

Time resolved optical spectroscopy is used to elucidate the dynamics of photodoped spin-aligned carriers in the presence of an underlying magnetic lattice in the multiferroic compound TbMnO(3). The transient responses while probing d-d intersite transitions show marked differences along different crystallographic directions, which are discussed in terms of the interplay between the processes of hopping of the photo-injected electrons and the magnetic order in the material.

Neutron and X-ray scattering experiments have provided mounting evidence for spin and charge ordering phenomena in underdoped cuprates. These range from early work on stripe correlations in Nd-LSCO to the latest discovery of charge-density-waves in YBa2Cu3O(6+x). Both phenomena are characterized by a pronounced dependence on doping, temperature and an externally applied magnetic field. Here, we show that these electron-lattice instabilities exhibit also a previously unrecognized bulk-surface dichotomy. Surface-sensitive electronic and structural probes uncover a temperature-dependent evolution of the CuO2 plane band dispersion and apparent Fermi pockets in underdoped Bi2 Sr(2-x) La(x) CuO(6+δ) (Bi2201), which is directly associated with an hitherto-undetected strong temperature dependence of the incommensurate superstructure periodicity below 130 K. In stark contrast, the structural modulation revealed by bulk-sensitive probes is temperature-independent. These findings point to a surface-enhanced incipient charge-density-wave instability, driven by Fermi surface nesting. This discovery is of critical importance in the interpretation of single-particle spectroscopy data, and establishes the surface of cuprates and other complex oxides as a rich playground for the study of electronically soft phases.

We demonstrate, using a combination of experiment and density functional theory, that orbital ordering drives the formation of a one-dimensional (1D) S=1/2 antiferromagnetic spin chain in the 3D rocksalt structure of cesium superoxide (CsO2). The magnetic superoxide anion (O2(-)) exhibits degeneracy of its 2p-derived molecular orbitals, which is lifted by a structural distortion on cooling. A spin chain is then formed by zigzag ordering of the half-filled superoxide orbitals, promoting a superexchange pathway mediated by the p(z) orbitals of Cs(+) along only one crystal direction. This scenario is analogous to the 3d-orbital-driven spin chain found in the perovskite KCuF3 and is the first example of an inorganic quantum spin system with unpaired p electrons.

A highly ordered two-dimensional hybrid magnetic nanocomposite has been prepared by synthesizing and intercalating a new cationic aluminum-hydroxy ferric ferrocyanide compound into a cation-adsorbing nanoclay (montmorillonite). Chemical and structural properties were investigated by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, thermogravimetric and differential thermal analyses, Fourier transform infrared, X-ray photoemission, and Mössbauer spectroscopies. Elemental analysis was based on proton-induced gamma ray emission and X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy data, N/C elemental ratios, and cation-exchange capacity measurements. Magnetic properties were studied by SQUID magnetometry. The results suggest: (i) that the cationic Prussian blue analog comprises Al-hydroxy cations embedded into a monolayer thick two-dimensional ferric ferrocyanide array; and (ii) that the clay-Prussian blue nanohybrid consists of such arrays stacked between the clay layers. The latter material orders ferromagnetically at approximately 5K showing a hundred times higher remanence than that of the starting material, soluble Prussian blue (ammonium ferric ferrocyanide)., (Copyright 2010 Elsevier Inc. We have studied the magnetodieletric coupling of polycrystalline samples of the spinels MCr(2)O(4) (M = Mn, Co and Ni). Dielectric anomalies are clearly observed at the onset of the magnetic spiral structure (T(s)) and at the 'lock-in' transition (T(f)) in MnCr(2)O(4) and CoCr(2)O(4), and also at the onset of the canted structure (T(s)) in NiCr(2)O(4). The strength of the magnetodielectric coupling in this system can be explained by spin-orbit coupling. Moreover, the dielectric response in an applied magnetic field scales with the square of the magnetization for all three samples. Thus, the magnetodielectric coupling in this state appears to originate from the P(2)M(2) term in the free energy.

We observe a seemingly complex magnetic field dependence of the dielectric constant of hexagonal YbMnO(3) near the spin ordering temperature. After rescaling, the data taken at different temperatures and magnetic fields collapse on a single curve describing the sharp anomaly in nonlinear magnetoelectric response at the magnetic transition. We show that this anomaly is a result of the competition between two magnetic phases. The scaling and the shape of the anomaly are explained using the phenomenological Landau description of the competing phases in hexagonal manganites.

The influence of magnetic field on the electrical properties of Tb(1-x)Ca(x)MnO(3) has been investigated by means of dielectric, polarization and neutron diffraction measurements. A field of 6 T applied along the b-axis induces a crossover from ferroelectric to relaxor behavior for the x = 0.02 compound at temperatures close to the ferroelectric transition. The mechanism of this field induced crossover involves a decrease in the coherence length of the Mn-spin-spiral structure due to increasing electron hopping rates associated with double exchange. Moreover, a large negative magnetocapacitance is observed at the freezing temperature for x = 0.05, which originates from suppression of the relaxor state and thus represents a new mechanism of magnetocapacitance.

We investigate theoretically the ternary copper chalcogenides with the general formula Cu(2)M(II)M(IV)S(4). This family of compounds can crystallize in two different non-centrosymmetric structures, [Formula: see text] or Pnm 2(1). We show that all the reported members of Cu(2)M(II)M(IV)S(4) having the Pnm 2(1) symmetry exhibit a large spontaneous polarization. This result suggests that several of these materials are likely to be multiferroics since they order magnetically at low temperature. We discuss in detail in the framework of Landau theory the members Cu(2)MnSnS(4) and Cu(2)MnGeS(4) which should present both a linear magnetoelectric effect and multiferroic behavior.

YVO3 exhibits a well separated sequence of orbital and spin order transitions at 200 and 116 K, followed by a combined spin-orbital reorientation at 77 K. It is shown that the spin order can be destroyed by a sufficiently strong optical pulse within less than 4 ps. In contrast, the orbital reordering transition from C-type to G-type orbital order is slower than 100 ps and goes via an intermediate nonthermal phase. We propose that the dynamics of phase transitions is subjected to symmetry relations between the associated phases.

We have explored a new strategy to discover materials with large resistive or capacitive responses to magnetic fields by synthesizing EuMO2N (M = Nb, Ta) perovskites that combine ferromagnetic order of S = 7/2 Eu2+ spins with possible off-center distortions of the d0 M5+ cations enhanced by covalent bonding to N. EuNbO2N shows colossal magnetoresistances at low temperatures and a giant magnetocapacitance. However, the latter response originates from a microstructural effect rather than an intrinsic multiferroism.

Terahertz transient conductivity measurements are performed on pentacene single crystals, which directly demonstrate a strong coupling of charge carriers to low frequency molecular motions with energies centered around 1.1 THz. We present evidence that the strong coupling to low frequency motions is the factor limiting the conductivity in these organic semiconductors. Our observations explain the apparent paradox of the "bandlike" temperature dependence of the conductivity beyond the validity limit of the band model.

The relationship between the crystal structures, band structures, and electronic properties of acene-TCNQ complexes has been investigated. We focus on the newly synthesized crystals of the charge-transfer salt tetracene-TCNQ and similar to it perylene-TCNQ, potentially interesting for realization of ambipolar transport. The band structures were calculated from first principles using density-functional theory (DFT). Despite the similarity in the crystal structures of the acene-TCNQ complexes studied here, the band structures are very different. Hole and electron transport properties are predicted to be equally good in perylene-TCNQ, in contrast to the tetracene-TCNQ, which has good transport properties for electrons only. The estimated degree of charge transfer for tetracene-TCNQ is 0.13e and for perylene-TCNQ 0.46e.

Molecular recognition between two species of Au55 clusters bearing complementary hydrogen-bonding groups provides a facile route to accomplish solution-based assembly of two-component nanoparticle aggregates.

We use symmetry considerations in order to predict new magnetoelectric fluorides. In addition to these magnetoelectric properties, we discuss which among these fluorides are the ones susceptible to present multiferroic properties. We emphasize that several materials exhibit ferromagnetic properties. This ferromagnetism should enhance the interplay between the magnetic and dielectric properties in these materials.

Superconducting low dimensional systems are the natural choice for fast and sensitive infrared detection, because of their quantum nature and the low-noise, cryogenic operation environment. On the other hand, monochromatic and coherent electron beams, emitted from superconductors and carbon-based nanostructured materials, respectively, are significant for the development of electron optical systems such as electron microscopes and electron-beam nanofabrication systems. Here we describe for the first time a simple method which yields carbon nanotubes encapsulating single crystalline superconducting tin nanowires by employing the catalytic chemical vapor deposition method over solid tin dioxide. The superconducting tin nanowires, with diameters 15-35 nm, are covered with well-graphitized carbon walls and show, due to their reduced diameters, a critical magnetic field (Hc) more than 30 times higher than the value of bulk metallic tin.

We report the crystal structure of rubrene, C42H28 (5,6,11,12-tetraphenyltetracene), in the temperature interval 100-300 K. The crystals are grown by physical vapor transport in an open system. The crystal structure is orthorhombic over the entire temperature range.

We report evidence for phase coexistence of orbital orderings of different symmetry in SmVO3 by high resolution x-ray powder diffraction. The phase coexistence is triggered by an antiferromagnetic ordering of the vanadium spins near 130 K, below an initial orbital ordering near 200 K. The phase coexistence is the result of the intermediate ionic size of samarium coupled to exchange striction at the vanadium spin ordering.

A single-crystal X-ray structure study of gadolinium triiron tetraborate, GdFe3(BO3)4, at room temperature and at 90 K is reported. At room temperature GdFe3(BO3)4 crystallizes in a trigonal space group, R32 (No. 155), the same as found for other members of the iron borate family RFe3(BO3)4. At 90 K the structure of GdFe3(BO3)4 transforms to the space group P3(1)21 (No. 152). The low-temperature structure determination gives new insight into the weakly first-order structural phase transition at 156 K and into the related Raman phonon anomalies. The presence of two inequivalent iron chains in the low-temperature structure provides a new perspective on the interpretation of the low-temperature magnetic properties.

We use ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy to investigate the effect of oxygen and air exposure on the electronic structure of pentacene single crystals and thin films. It is found that O(2) and water do not react noticeably with pentacene, whereas singlet oxygen/ozone readily oxidize the organic compound. Also, we obtain no evidence for considerable p-type doping of pentacene by O(2) at low pressure. However, oxygen exposure lowers the hole injection barrier at the interface between Au and pentacene by 0.25 eV, presumably due to a modification of the Au surface properties.

Understanding the ferroelectrocity in magnetic ferroelectric oxides is of both fundamental and technological importance. Here, we identify the nature of the ferroelectric phase transition in the hexagonal manganite, YMnO(3), using a combination of single-crystal X-ray diffraction, thorough structure analysis and first-principles density-functional calculations. The ferroelectric phase is characterized by a buckling of the layered MnO(5) polyhedra, accompanied by displacements of the Y ions, which lead to a net electric polarization. Our calculations show that the mechanism is driven entirely by electrostatic and size effects, rather than the usual changes in chemical bonding associated with ferroelectric phase transitions in perovskite oxides. As a result, the usual indicators of structural instability, such as anomalies in Born effective charges on the active ions, do not hold. In contrast to the chemically stabilized ferroelectrics, this mechanism for ferroelectricity permits the coexistence of magnetism and ferroelectricity, and so suggests an avenue for designing novel magnetic ferroelectrics.

Thin films of pentacene are known to crystallize in at least four different polymorphs. All polymorphs are layered structures that are characterized by their interlayer spacing d(001). We develop a model that rationalizes the size of the interlayer spacing in terms of intralayer shifts of the pentacene molecules along their long molecular axes. It explains the wide variety of interlayer spacings, without distorting the herringbone pattern that is characteristic of many acenes. Using two simple theoretical models, we attempt to relate the intralayer shifts with the dominant, although weak, interatomic interactions (van der Waals, weak electrostatic, and covalent). For two polymorphs, a consistent picture is found. A full understanding of the other two, substrate-induced, polymorphs probably requires consideration of interlayer interactions.

We present evidence that the insulator-to-metal transition in La(1-x)Ca(x)MnO3 near x approximately 0.2 is driven by the suppression of coherent Jahn-Teller distortions, originating from d-type orbital ordering. The orbital-ordered state is characterized by large long-range Q2 distortions below T(O'- O*). Above T(O'- O*) we find evidence for coexistence between an orbital-ordered and an orbital-disordered state. This behavior is discussed in terms of electronic phase separation in an orbital-ordered insulating and an orbital-disordered metallic state.

We report spin-polarized transport experiments across antiphase domain boundaries which act as atomically sharp magnetic interfaces. The antiphase boundaries are prepared by growing Fe(3)O(4) epitaxially on MgO, the magnetic coupling over a large fraction of these boundaries being antiferromagnetic. Magnetoresistance measurements yield linear and quadratic field dependence up to the anisotropy field for fields applied parallel and perpendicular to the film plane, respectively. This behavior can be explained by a hopping model in which spin-polarized electrons traverse an antiferromagnetic interface between two ferromagnetic chains.

Evidence has been found for a change in the ordered occupation of the vanadium d orbitals at the 77 K phase transition in YVO3, manifested by a change in the type of Jahn-Teller distortion. The orbital ordering above 77 K is not destroyed at the magnetic ordering temperature of 116 K, but is present as far as a second structural phase transition at 200 K. The transition between orbital orderings is caused by an increase in octahedral tilting with decreasing temperature.

Pentacene, C(22)H(14), crystallizes in different morphologies characterized by their d(001)-spacings of 14.1, 14.5, 15.0 and 15.4 A. We have studied the crystal structure of the 14.1 and 14.5 A d-spacing morphologies grown by vapour transport and from solution. We find a close correspondence between the 14.1 A structure reported by Holmes, Kumaraswamy, Matzeger & Vollhardt [Chem. Eur. J. (1999), 5, 3399-3412] and the 14.5 A structure reported by Campbell, Monteath Robertson & Trotter [Acta Cryst. (1961), 14, 705-711]. Single crystals commonly adopt the 14.1 A d-spacing morphology with an inversion centre on both molecules in the unit cell. Thin films grown on SiO(2) substrates above 350 K preferentially adopt the 14.5 A d-spacing morphology, with a slightly smaller unit-cell volume.

The crystal structure of hexagonal yttrium trioxomanganate has been determined at room temperature and at 180 K. It is isomorphous with LuMnO(3). The Mn displacement vector has a frustrated component in the ab plane and a ferroelectric part along the c axis. The net ferroelectricity is zero due to inversion twinning, with 1:1 twin fractions.

The space group of alpha(')-NaV2O5 turns below T(c) = 34 K from Pmmn with all V sites equivalent, into Fmm2 with three independent vanadium sites per layer. This is incompatible with models of charge ordering into V4+ and V5+. Our structure determination indicates that the phase transition consists of a charge ordering with three distinct valence states, formally V4+, V4.5+, and V5+. The singlet formation is not associated with dimerization on the spin ladder, but with the formation of spin clusters. Finally, we ascribe the quadrupling of the c axis to the large polarizability of the V2O5 skeleton.
