Ice-coated dust grains provide the main reservoir of volatiles that play an important role in planet formation processes and may become incorporated into planetary atmospheres. However, due to observational challenges, the ice abundance distribution in protoplanetary disks is not well constrained. We present JWST/MIRI observations of the edge-on disk HH 48 NE carried out as part of the IRS program Ice Age. We detect CO$_2$, NH$_3$, H$_2$O and tentatively CH$_4$ and NH$_4^+$. Radiative transfer models suggest that ice absorption features are produced predominantly in the 50-100 au region of the disk. The CO$_2$ feature at 15 micron probes a region closer to the midplane (z/r = 0.1-0.15) than the corresponding feature at 4.3 micron (z/r = 0.2-0.6), but all observations trace regions significantly above the midplane reservoirs where we expect the bulk of the ice mass to be located. Ices must reach a high scale height (z/r ~ 0.6; corresponding to modeled dust extinction Av ~ 0.1), in order to be consistent with the observed vertical distribution of the peak ice optical depths. The weakness of the CO$_2$ feature at 15 micron relative to the 4.3 micron feature and the red emission wing of the 4.3 micron CO$_2$ feature are both consistent with ices being located at high elevation in the disk. The retrieved NH$_3$ abundance and the upper limit on the CH$_3$OH abundance relative to H$_2$O are significantly lower than those in the interstellar medium (ISM), but consistent with cometary observations. Full wavelength coverage is required to properly study the abundance distribution of ices in disks. To explain the presence of ices at high disk altitudes, we propose two possible scenarios: a disk wind that entrains sufficient amounts of dust, thus blocking part of the stellar UV radiation, or vertical mixing that cycles enough ices into the upper disk layers to balance ice photodesorption., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures, accepted in A&A

We present the first results of the JWST program PROJECT-J (PROtostellar JEts Cradle Tested with JWST ), designed to study the Class I source HH46 IRS and its outflow through NIRSpec and MIRI spectroscopy (1.66 to 28 micron). The data provide line-images (~ 6.6" in length with NIRSpec, and up to 20" with MIRI) revealing unprecedented details within the jet, the molecular outflow and the cavity. We detect, for the first time, the red-shifted jet within ~ 90 au from the source. Dozens of shock-excited forbidden lines are observed, including highly ionized species such as [Ne III] 15.5 micron, suggesting that the gas is excited by high velocity (> 80 km/s) shocks in a relatively high density medium. Images of H2 lines at different excitations outline a complex molecular flow, where a bright cavity, molecular shells, and a jet-driven bow-shock interact with and are shaped by the ambient conditions. Additional NIRCam 2 micron images resolve the HH46 IRS ~ 110 au binary system and suggest that the large asymmetries observed between the jet and the H2 wide angle emission could be due to two separate outflows being driven by the two sources. The spectra of the unresolved binary show deep ice bands and plenty of gaseous lines in absorption, likely originating in a cold envelope or disk. In conclusion, JWST has unraveled for the first time the origin of the HH46 IRS complex outflow demonstrating its capability to investigate embedded regions around young stars, which remain elusive even at near-IR wavelengths., Comment: 28 pages, 15 figures, Accepted for publication on The Astrophysical Journal (9 April 2024)

We present JWST MIRI MRS observations of the edge-on protoplanetary disk around the young sub-solar mass star Tau 042021, acquired as part of the Cycle 1 GO program "Mapping Inclined Disk Astrochemical Signatures (MIDAS)." These data resolve the mid-IR spatial distributions of H$_2$, revealing X-shaped emission extending to ~200 au above the disk midplane with a semi-opening angle of $35 \pm 5$ degrees. We do not velocity-resolve the gas in the spectral images, but the measured semi-opening angle of the H$_2$ is consistent with an MHD wind origin. A collimated, bipolar jet is seen in forbidden emission lines from [Ne II], [Ne III], [Ni II], [Fe II], [Ar II], and [S III]. Extended H$_2$O and CO emission lines are also detected, reaching diameters between ~90 and 190 au, respectively. Hot molecular emission is not expected at such radii, and we interpret its extended spatial distribution as scattering of inner disk molecular emission by dust grains in the outer disk surface. H I recombination lines, characteristic of inner disk accretion shocks, are similarly extended, and are likely also scattered light from the innermost star-disk interface. Finally, we detect extended PAH emission at 11.3 microns co-spatial with the scattered light continuum, making this the first low-mass T Tauri star around which extended PAHs have been confirmed, to our knowledge. Ices are the main carriers of volatiles in protoplanetary disks and are crucial to our understanding of the chemistry that ultimately sets the organic composition of planets. The ERS program Ice Age on the JWST follows the ice evolution through all stages of star and planet formation. JWST/NIRSpec observations of the edge-on Class II protoplanetary disk HH~48~NE reveal spatially resolved absorption features of the major ice components H$_2$O, CO$_2$, CO, and multiple weaker signatures from less abundant ices NH$_3$, OCN$^-$, and OCS. Isotopologue $^{13}$CO$_2$ ice has been detected for the first time in a protoplanetary disk. Since multiple complex light paths contribute to the observed flux, the ice absorption features are filled in by ice-free scattered light. The $^{12}$CO$_2$/$^{13}$CO$_2$ ratio of 14 implies that the $^{12}$CO$_2$ feature is saturated, without the flux approaching 0, indicative of a very high CO$_2$ column density on the line of sight, and a corresponding abundance with respect to hydrogen that is higher than ISM values by a factor of at least a few. Observations of rare isotopologues are crucial, as we show that the $^{13}$CO$_2$ observation allows us to determine the column density of CO$_2$ to be at an order of magnitude higher than the lower limit directly inferred from the observed optical depth. Radial variations in ice abundance, e.g., snowlines, are significantly modified since all observed photons have passed through the full radial extent of the disk. CO ice is observed at perplexing heights in the disk, extending to the top of the CO-emitting gas layer. We argue that the most likely interpretation is that we observe some CO ice at high temperatures, trapped in less volatile ices like H$_2$O and CO$_2$. The abundance and distribution of ice in protoplanetary disks (PPD) is critical to understand the linkage between the composition of circumstellar matter and the composition of exoplanets. Edge-on PPDs are a useful tool to constrain such ice composition and its location in the disk, as ice spectral signatures can be observed in absorption against the continuum emission arising from the warmer central disk regions. The aim of this work is to model ice absorption features in PPDs and determine how well the abundance of the main ice species across the disk can be determined within the uncertainty of the physical parameter space. The edge-on PPD around HH 48 NE, a target of the JWST ERS program IceAge, is used as a reference system. We use RADMC-3D to raytrace the mid-infrared continuum. Using a constant parameterized ice abundance, ice opacities are added to the dust opacity in regions wherever the disk is cold enough for the main carbon, oxygen and nitrogen carriers to freeze out. The global abundance of the main ice carriers in HH 48 NE can be determined within a factor of 3, when taking the uncertainty of the physical parameters into account. Ice features in PPDs can be saturated at an optical depth <1, due to local saturation. Spatially observed ice optical depths cannot be directly related to column densities due to radiative transfer effects. Vertical snowlines will not be a clear transition due to the radially increasing height of the snowsurface, but their location may be constrained from observations using radiative transfer modeling. Radial snowlines are not really accesible. Not only the ice abundance, but also inclination, settling, grain size distribution and disk mass have strong impact on the observed ice absorption features in disks. Context. Observations of edge-on disks are an important tool for constraining general protoplanetary disk properties that cannot be determined in any other way. However, most radiative transfer models cannot simultaneously reproduce the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) and resolved scattered light and submillimeter observations of these systems, due to the differences in geometry and dust properties at different wavelengths. Aims. We simultaneously constrain the geometry of the edge-on protoplanetary disk HH 48 NE and the characteristics of the host star. HH 48 NE is part of the JWST early release science program Ice Age. This work serves as a stepping stone towards a better understanding of the disk physical structure and icy chemistry in this particular source. This kind of modeling lays the groundwork for studying other edge-on sources to be observed with the JWST. Methods. We fit a parameterized dust model to HH 48 NE by coupling the radiative transfer code RADMC-3D and an MCMC framework. The dust structure was fitted independently to a compiled SED, a scattered light image at 0.8 ${\mu}$m and an ALMA dust continuum observation at 890 ${\mu}$m. Results. We find that 90% of the dust mass in HH 48 NE is settled to the disk midplane, less than in average disks, and that the atmospheric layers of the disk contain exclusively large grains (0.3-10 ${\mu}$m). The exclusion of small grains in the upper atmosphere likely has important consequences for the chemistry due to the deep penetration of high-energy photons. Icy grain mantles are the main reservoir of the volatile elements that link chemical processes in dark, interstellar clouds with the formation of planets and composition of their atmospheres. The initial ice composition is set in the cold, dense parts of molecular clouds, prior to the onset of star formation. With the exquisite sensitivity of JWST, this critical stage of ice evolution is now accessible for detailed study. Here we show the first results of the Early Release Science program "Ice Age" that reveal the rich composition of these dense cloud ices. Weak ices, including, $^{13}$CO$_2$, OCN$^-$, $^{13}$CO, OCS, and COMs functional groups are now detected along two pre-stellar lines of sight. The $^{12}$CO$_2$ ice profile indicates modest growth of the icy grains. Column densities of the major and minor ice species indicate that ices contribute between 2 and 19% of the bulk budgets of the key C, O, N, and S elements. The simultaneous detection of organic molecules of the form C$_2$H$_{\text{n}}$O, such as ketene (CH$_2$CO), acetaldehyde (CH$_3$CHO), and ethanol (CH$_3$CH$_2$OH), toward early star-forming regions offers hints of shared chemical history. Several reaction routes have been proposed and experimentally verified under various interstellar conditions to explain the formation pathways involved. Most noticeably, the non-energetic processing of C$_2$H$_2$ ice with OH-radicals and H-atoms was shown to provide formation routes to ketene, acetaldehyde, ethanol, and vinyl alcohol (CH$_2$CHOH) along the H$_2$O formation sequence on grain surfaces. In this work, the non-energetic formation scheme is extended with laboratory measurements focusing on the energetic counterpart, induced by cosmic rays penetrating the H$_2$O-rich ice mantle. The focus here is on the H$^+$ radiolysis of interstellar C$_2$H$_2$:H$_2$O ice analogs at 17 K. Ultra-high vacuum experiments were performed to investigate the 200 keV H$^+$ radiolysis chemistry of predeposited C$_2$H$_2$:H$_2$O ices, both as mixed and layered geometries. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy was used to monitor in situ newly formed species as a function of the accumulated energy dose (or H$^+$ fluence). The infrared (IR) spectral assignments are further confirmed in isotope labeling experiments using H$_2$$^{18}$O. The energetic processing of C$_2$H$_2$:H$_2$O ice not only results in the formation of (semi-) saturated hydrocarbons (C$_2$H$_4$ and C$_2$H$_6$) and polyynes as well as cumulenes (C$_4$H$_2$ and C$_4$H$_4$), but it also efficiently forms O-bearing COMs, including vinyl alcohol, ketene, acetaldehyde, and ethanol, for which the reaction cross-section and product composition are derived. Complex organic molecules (COMs) have been identified toward high- and low-mass protostars as well as molecular clouds, suggesting that these interstellar species originate from the early stage(s) of starformation. The reaction pathways resulting in COMs described by the formula C$_2$H$_\text{n}$O are still under debate. In this work, we investigate the laboratory possible solid-state reactions that involve simple hydrocarbons and OH-radicals along with H$_2$O ice under translucent cloud conditions (1$\leq$A$_V$$\leq$5 and \textit{n}$_\text{H}$$\sim$10$^3$ cm$^{-3}$). We focus on the interactions of C$_2$H$_2$ with H-atoms and OH-radicals, which are produced along the H$_2$O formation sequence on grain surfaces at 10 K. Ultra-high vacuum (UHV) experiments were performed to study the surface chemistry observed during C$_2$H$_2$ + O$_2$ + H codeposition, where O$_2$ was used for the in-situ generation of OH-radicals. Reflection absorption infrared spectroscopy (RAIRS) was applied to in situ monitor the initial and newly formed species. After that, a temperature-programmed desorption experiment combined with a Quadrupole mass spectrometer (TPD-QMS) was used as a complementary analytical tool. The investigated 10 K surface chemistry of C$_2$H$_2$ with H-atoms and OH-radicals not only results in semi and fully saturated hydrocarbons, such as ethylene (C$_2$H$_4$) and ethane (C$_2$H$_6$), but it also leads to the formation of COMs, such as vinyl alcohol, acetaldehyde, ketene, ethanol, and possibly acetic acid. It is concluded that OH-radical addition reactions to C$_2$H$_2$, acting as a molecular backbone, followed by isomerization (i.e., keto-enol tautomerization) via an intermolecular pathway and successive hydrogenation provides a so far experimentally unreported solid-state route for the formation of these species without the need of energetic input., Comment: 17 pages, 12 figures, 2 tables

Context: Reliable, directly measured optical properties of astrophysical ice analogs in the infrared (IR) and terahertz (THz) range are missing. These parameters are of great importance to model the dust continuum radiative transfer in dense and cold regions, here thick ice mantles are present, and are necessary for the interpretation of future observations planned in the far-IR region. Aims: Coherent THz radiation allows direct measurement of the complex dielectric function (refractive index) of astrophysically relevant ice species in the THz range. Methods: The time-domain waveforms and the frequency-domain spectra of reference samples of CO ice, deposited at a temperature of 28.5 K and annealed to 33 K at different thicknesses, have been recorded. A new algorithm is developed to reconstruct the real and imaginary parts of the refractive index from the time-domain THz data. Results: The complex refractive index in the wavelength range of 1 mm - 150 ${\mu}$m (0.3 - 2.0 THz) has been determined for the studied ice samples, and compared with available data found in the literature. Conclusions: The developed algorithm of reconstructing the real and imaginary parts of the refractive index from the time-domain THz data enables, for the first time, the determination of optical properties of astrophysical ice analogs without using the Kramers-Kronig relations. The obtained data provide a benchmark to interpret the observational data from current ground based facilities as well as future space telescope missions, and have been used to estimate the opacities of the dust grains in presence of CO ice mantles.

Manifestations of stellar activity (such as star-spots, plage/faculae, and convective flows) are well known to induce spectroscopic signals often referred to as astrophysical noise by exoplanet hunters. For example, setting an ultimate goal of detecting true Earth-analogs demands reaching radial velocity (RV) precisions of ~9 cm/s. While this is becoming technically feasible with the latest generation of highly stabilised spectrographs, it is astrophysical noise that sets the true fundamental barrier on attainable RV precisions. In this paper we parameterise the impact of solar surface magneto-convection on absorption line profiles, and extend the analysis from the solar disc centre (Paper I) to the solar limb. Off disc-centre, the plasma flows orthogonal to the granule tops begin to lie along the line-of-sight and those parallel to the granule tops are no longer completely aligned with the observer. Moreover, the granulation is corrugated and the granules can block other granules, as well as the intergranular lane components. Overall, the visible plasma flows and geometry of the corrugated surface significantly impact the resultant line profiles and induce centre-to-limb variations in shape and net position. We detail these herein, and compare to various solar observations. We find our granulation parameterisation can recreate realistic line profiles and induced radial velocity shifts, across the stellar disc, indicative of both those found in computationally heavy radiative 3D magnetohydrodynamical simulations and empirical solar observations., Comment: 17 pages, 14 figures, accepted to ApJ

A better understanding of sulphur chemistry is needed to solve the interstellar sulphur depletion problem. A way to achieve this goal is to study new S-bearing molecules in the laboratory, obtaining accurate rest frequencies for an astronomical search. We focus on dithioformic acid, HCSSH, which is the sulphur analogue of formic acid. The aim of this study is to provide an accurate line list of the two HCSSH $trans$ and $cis$ isomers in their electronic ground state and a comprehensive centrifugal distortion analysis with an extension of measurements in the millimetre and submillimetre range. We studied the two isomers in the laboratory using an absorption spectrometer employing the frequency-modulation technique. The molecules were produced directly within a free-space cell by glow discharge of a gas mixture. We measured lines belonging to the electronic ground state up to 478 GHz, with a total number of 204 and 139 new rotational transitions, respectively, for $trans$ and $cis$ isomers. The final dataset also includes lines in the centimetre range available from literature. The extension of the measurements in the mm and submm range lead to an accurate set of rotational and centrifugal distortion parameters. This allows us to predict frequencies with estimated uncertainties as low as 5 kHz at 1 mm wavelength. Hence, the new dataset provided by this study can be used for astronomical search.

Sulfur is an abundant element in the cosmos and it is thus an important contributor to astrochemistry in the interstellar medium and in the Solar System. Astronomical observations of the gas and of the solid phases in the dense interstellar/circumstellar regions have evidenced that sulfur is underabundant. The hypothesis to explain such a circumstance is that it is incorporated in some species in the solid phase (i.e. as frozen gases and/or refractory solids) and/or in the gas phase, which for different reasons have not been observed so far. Here we wish to give a contribution to the field by studying the chemistry induced by thermal and energetic processing of frozen mixtures of sulfur dioxide (one of the most abundant sulfur-bearing molecules observed so far) and water. We present the results of a series of laboratory experiments concerning thermal processing of different H2O:SO2 mixtures and ion bombardment 30 keV He$^+$ of the same mixtures. We used in situ FTIR spectroscopy to investigate the induced effects. The results indicate that ionic species such as HSO$_{3}^{-}$, HSO$_{4}^{-}$, and S$_2$O$_{5}^{2-}$ are easily produced. Energetic processing also produces SO$_3$ polymers and a sulfurous refractory residue. The produced ionic species exhibit spectral features in a region that, in astronomical spectra of dense molecular clouds, is dominated by strong silicate absorption. However, such a dominant feature is associated with some spectral features, some of which have not yet been identified. We suggest adding the sulfur-bearing ionic species to the list of candidates to help explain some of those features.

Molecular complexity builds up at each step of the Sun-like star formation process, starting from simple molecules and ending up in large polyatomic species. Complex organic molecules (COMs; such as methyl formate, HCOOCH$_3$, dymethyl ether, CH$_3$OCH$_3$, formamide, NH$_2$CHO, or glycoaldehyde, HCOCH$_2$OH) are formed in all the components of the star formation recipe (e.g. pre-stellar cores, hot-corinos, circumstellar disks, shocks induced by fast jets), due to ice grain mantle sublimation or sputtering as well as gas-phase reactions. Understanding in great detail the involved processes is likely the only way to predict the ultimate molecular complexity reached in the ISM, as the detection of large molecules is increasingly more difficult with the increase of the number of atoms constituting them. Thanks to the recent spectacular progress of astronomical observations, due to the Herschel (sub-mm and IR), IRAM and SMA (mm and sub-mm), and NRAO (cm) telescopes, an enormous activity is being developed in the field of Astrochemistry, extending from astronomical observatories to chemical laboratories. We are involved in several observational projects providing unbiased spectral surveys (in the 80-300 and 500-2000 GHz ranges) with unprecedented sensitivity of templates of dense cores and protostars. Forests of COM lines have been detected. In this chapter we will focus on the chemistry of both cold prestellar cores and hot shocked regions, (i) reviewing results and open questions provided by mm-FIR observations, and (ii) showing the need of carrying on the observations of COMs at lower frequencies, where SKA will operate. We will also emphasize the importance of analysing the spectra by the light of the experimental studies performed by our team, who is investigating the chemical effects induced by ionising radiation bombarding astrophysically relevant ices., Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures

The ion-sputtering (IS) process is active in many planetary environments in the Solar System where plasma precipitates directly on the surface (for instance, Mercury, Moon, Europa). In particular, solar-wind sputtering is one of the most important agents for the surface erosion of a Near-Earth Object (NEO), acting together with other surface release processes, such as Photon Stimulated Desorption (PSD), Thermal Desorption (TD) and Micrometeoroid Impact Vaporization (MIV). The energy distribution of the IS-released neutrals peaks at a few eVs and extends up to hundreds of eVs. Since all other release processes produce particles of lower energies, the presence of neutral atoms in the energy range above 10 eV and below a few keVs (Sputtered High-Energy Atoms - SHEA) identifies the IS process. SHEA easily escape from the NEO, due to NEO's extremely weak gravity. Detection and analysis of SHEA will give important information on surface-loss processes as well as on surface elemental composition. The investigation of the active release processes, as a function of the external conditions and the NEO surface properties, is crucial for obtaining a clear view of the body's present loss rate as well as for getting clues on its evolution, which depends significantly on space weather. In this work, an attempt to analyze the processes that take place on the surface of these small airless bodies, as a result of their exposure to the space environment, has been realized. For this reason a new space weathering model (Space Weathering on NEO - SPAWN), is presented. Moreover, an instrument concept of a neutral-particle analyzer specifically designed for the measurement of neutral density and the detection of SHEA from a NEO is proposed, Comment: 36 pages

We have performed new laboratory experiments which gave us the possibility to obtain an estimate of the amount of carbon chain oxides (namely C3O2, C2O, and C3O) formed after irradiation (with 200 keV protons) of pure CO ice, at 16 K. The analysis of laboratory data indicates that in dense molecular clouds, when high CO depletion occurs, an amount of carbon chain oxides as high as 2-3x10^-3 with respect to gas phase carbon monoxide can be formed after ion irradiation of icy grain mantles. Then we have searched for gas phase C2O and C3O towards ten low-mass young stellar objects. Among these we have detected the C3O line at 38486.891 MHz towards the low-mass protostar Elias 18. On the basis of the laboratory results we suggest that in dense molecular clouds gas phase carbon chain oxides are formed in the solid phase after cosmic ion irradiation of CO-rich icy mantles and released to the gas phase after desorption of icy mantles. We expect that the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA), thanks to its high sensitivity and resolution, will increase the number of carbon chain oxides detected in dense molecular clouds., Comment: 19 Pages, 5 figures, Accepted to ApJ
