Abstract

Precision measurements of the positron component in the cosmic radiation provide important information about the propagation of cosmic rays and the nature of particle sources in our Galaxy. The satellite-borne experiment PAMELA has been used to make a new measurement of the cosmic-ray positron flux and fraction that extends previously published measurements up to 300 GeV in kinetic energy. The combined measurements of the cosmic-ray positron energy spectrum and fraction provide a unique tool to constrain interpretation models. During the recent solar minimum activity period from July 2006 to December 2009 approximately 24500 positrons were observed. The results cannot be easily reconciled with purely secondary production and additional sources of either astrophysical or exotic origin may be required., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures, 1 table. Abstract

Precision measurements of the electron component in the cosmic radiation provide important information about the origin and propagation of cosmic rays in the Galaxy. Here we present new results regarding negatively charged electrons between 1 and 625 GeV performed by the satellite-borne experiment PAMELA. This is the first time that cosmic-ray electrons have been identified above 50 GeV. The electron spectrum can be described with a single power law energy dependence with spectral index -3.18 +- 0.05 above the energy region influenced by the solar wind (> 30 GeV). No significant spectral features are observed and the data can be interpreted in terms of conventional diffusive propagation models. However, the data are also consistent with models including new cosmic-ray sources that could explain the rise in the positron fraction., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in PRL

Abstract

The satellite-borne experiment PAMELA has been used to make a new measurement of the cosmic-ray antiproton flux and the antiproton-to-proton flux ratio which extends previously published measurements down to 60 MeV and up to 180 GeV in kinetic energy. During 850 days of data acquisition approximately 1500 antiprotons were observed. The measurements are consistent with purely secondary production of antiprotons in the galaxy. Abstract

The PAMELA satellite-borne experiment was launched on 15 June 2006 from the Baikonur cosmodrome and it has been collecting data since then. The apparatus comprises a time-of-flight system, a silicon-microstrip magnetic spectrometer, a silicon-tungsten electromagnetic calorimeter, an anticoincidence system, a shower tail counter scintillator and a neutron detector. The combination of these devices allows precision studies of the charged cosmic radiation to be conducted over a wide energy range (100 MeV - 1 TeV) with high statistics, with particular focus on the antiparticle component. In this work we present 3He/4He isotopic ratio in the energy range from 100 MeV nucleon-1 to ~1 GeV nucleon-1. The measured abundances are compared with different interstellar/heliospheric propagation calculations which are tuned on previous proton and helium measurements.

Abstract

Preliminary results of measurements of the solar modulation of the isotopic hydrogen and helium content in galactic cosmic rays are presented for the first time. These data were obtained between 2006 and 2014 in the PAMELA international orbital experiment via measuring the time of flight of nuclei in the Pamela scintillation telescope and via analyzing, in the multilayered calorimeter of the PAMELA magnetic spectrometer, ionization losses of nuclei whose rigidity was known from trajectory measurements and which traversed the instrument without undergoing nuclear interactions. The results of these measurements are compared with existing experimental and calculated data, which are quite scanty. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The PAMELA space experiment will be launched on-board of a Russian Resurs DK1 satellite towards the end of 2005. The main scientific goal is the study of the antimatter component of the cosmic radiation. Three years of data taking will provide unprecedented statistics for antiprotons (80 MeV-190 GeV) and positrons (50 MeV-270 GeV) and will set the upper limit for the ratio He/He below 10(-8). PAMELA is built around a permanent magnet silicon spectrometer, surrounded by a plastic scintillator anticoincidence shield. An electromagnetic calorimeter is used for particle identification and energy measurements. If PAMELA data exceed the storage allowance on the satellite or the daily downlink quota (20 GB), a second level trigger may be activated by uplink from ground. Information from the anticoincidence system and from the calorimeter will be included in the second level trigger condition, providing a selective reduction of data. The second level trigger condition provides a reduction of data of similar to 60%, with a maximum systematic uncertainty in the proton (electron) spectra of 10% (3%). This uncertainty will be assessed during flight measuring one event every 10 without the second level trigger condition., QC 20100525

Abstract

The search for dark matter is a fundamental issue for astroparticle physics. A satellite-borne experiment ('Pamela') is under construction and will study cosmic rays whilst executing a polar orbit at an altitude of 690 km. The experiment comprises a transition radiation detector; a magnetic spectrometer, incorporating silicon tracking and surrounded by an anti-coincidence shield; an electromagnetic imaging calorimeter and a time-of-flight trigger system. This combination of detectors is particularly apt for the study of the antiproton component of cosmic rays from 100 MeV up to a few 100 GeV and will provide important new information for dark matter searches., QC 20100525

Abstract

The electronics of the Time of Flight telescope and trigger of PAMELA experiment are described. The time resolution requested by the ToF system must be less than 120 ps. The contribution of the digitization electronics is negligible if the TDC resolution is < 50 ps. The peculiarity of the developed electronics arises from the need to obtain such a time resolution associated to a wide dynamic range for charge measurements, operating in satellite environment, which implies low power consumption, radiation hardness, redundancy and high reliability
