BACKGROUND: The understanding of bile acid (BA) and unsaturated fatty acid (UFA) profiles, as well as their dysregulation, remains elusive in individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) coexisting with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Investigating these metabolites could offer valuable insights into the pathophy-siology of NAFLD in T2DM. AIM: To identify potential metabolite biomarkers capable of distinguishing between NAFLD and T2DM. METHODS: A training model was developed involving 399 participants, comprising 113 healthy controls (HCs), 134 individuals with T2DM without NAFLD, and 152 individuals with T2DM and NAFLD. External validation encompassed 172 participants. NAFLD patients were divided based on liver fibrosis scores. The analytical approach employed univariate testing, orthogonal partial least squares-discriminant analysis, logistic regression, receiver operating characteristic curve analysis, and decision curve analysis to pinpoint and assess the diagnostic value of serum biomarkers. RESULTS: Compared to HCs, both T2DM and NAFLD groups exhibited diminished levels of specific BAs. In UFAs, particular acids exhibited a positive correlation with NAFLD risk in T2DM, while the ω-6:ω-3 UFA ratio demonstrated a negative correlation. Levels of α-linolenic acid and γ-linolenic acid were linked to significant liver fibrosis in NAFLD. The validation cohort substantiated the predictive efficacy of these biomarkers for assessing NAFLD risk in T2DM patients. CONCLUSION: This study underscores the connection between altered BA and UFA profiles and the presence of NAFLD in individuals with T2DM, proposing their potential as biomarkers in the pathogenesis of NAFLD.

Each year more than 3000 Canadians are diagnosed with brain cancers like glioblastoma multiforme or recurrent head and neck cancers, which are difficult to treat with conventional radiotherapy techniques. One of the most clinically promising treatments for these cancers is boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT). This procedure involves selectively introducing a boron delivery agent into tumor cells and irradiating them with a neutron beam, which kills the cancer cells due to the high-linear energy transfer radiation produced by the [sup.10](n,[alpha])[sup.7]Li capture reaction. The theory of BNCT has been around for a long time since 1936, but has historically been limited by poor boron delivery agents and non-optimal neutron source facilities. Although significant improvements have been made in both of these domains, it is mainly the advancements of accelerator-based neutron sources that have led to the expansion of over 20 new BNCT facilities worldwide in the past decade. Additionally in this work, particle and heavy ion transport code system simulations, in collaboration with the University of Tsukuba, were performed to examine the effectiveness of the Ibaraki BNCT beam shaping assembly to moderate a neutron beam suitable for BNCT at the proposed prototype Canadian compact accelerator-based neutron source (CANS) site, which uses a similar but slightly higher energy 10 MeV proton accelerator with a 1 mA average current. The advancements of CANSs in recent decades have enabled significant improvements in BNCT technologies, allowing it to become a more viable clinical treatment option. Oral administration of resveratrol is able to ameliorate the progression of diabetic nephropathy (DN); however, its mechanisms of action remain unclear. Recent evidence suggested that the gut microbiota is involved in the metabolism therapeutics. In the current study, we sought to determine whether the anti-DN effects of resveratrol are mediated through modulation of the gut microbiota using the genetic db/db mouse model of DN. We demonstrate that resveratrol treatment of db/db mice relieves a series of clinical indicators of DN. We then show that resveratrol improves intestinal barrier function and ameliorates intestinal permeability and inflammation. The composition of the gut microbiome was significantly altered in db/db mice compared to control db/m mice. Dysbiosis in db/db mice characterized by low abundance levels of Bacteroides, Alistipes, Rikenella, Odoribacter, Parabacteroides, and Alloprevotella genera were reversed by resveratrol treatment, suggesting a potential role for the microbiome in DN progression. Furthermore, fecal microbiota transplantation, derived from healthy resveratrol-treated db/m mice, was sufficient to antagonize the renal dysfunction, rebalance the gut microbiome and improve intestinal permeability and inflammation in recipient db/db mice. These results indicate that resveratrol-mediated changes in the gut microbiome may play an important role in the mechanism of action of resveratrol, which provides supporting evidence for the gut-kidney axis in DN.

Objective To monitor the incidence of pulmonary infection after cardiac surgery by target monitoring for reducing the incidence of postoperative pulmonary infection. Methods Surgical targets monitoring was used to follow 425 patients undergoing cardiac surgery in a tertiary general hospital from January 2017 to December 2018. There were 25 cases of postoperative pulmonary infection, and the infection rate was 5.88%. From 2019 and 2020, the PDCA cycle mode was applied to compare the rate of pulmonary infection after cardiac surgery. Results In 2019, 11 cases in 265 patients with cardiac surgery had postoperative pulmonary infection, and the infection rate was 4.15%; In 2020, 6 cases in 200 patients with cardiac surgery had postoperative pulmonary infection, and the infection rate was 3%. Conclusions Through surgical target monitoring, it is found that the application of the PDCA cycle mode can jointly participate in the prevention and control of nosocomial infection with multiple disciplines, and continuously improve the quality. At the same time, it can effectively reduce the incidence of pulmonary infection after cardiac surgery, and greatly improve the life and quality of life of patients.

Human fat mass and obesity associated protein FTO is the first confirmed N6-methyladenosine(m6A) demethylase, which demonstrated the existence of reversible RNA modification, and also unveiled the prelude of m6A modification research. More and more researchers have tried to explore the specific mechanism of gene expression regulation at the level of m6A modification. It is found that m6A modification function requires the joint participation of methylesterase, demethylase, and binding protein to complete. FTO catalyze the demethylation of m6A modifications on mRNAs and is widely expressed in human tissues and participate in the regulation of various biological processes. This paper outlines the relationship between demethylase FTO and its mediated m6A/RNA modification and the development of body fat tissue, embryonic tissue, brain and neuro-system, hoping to gain insight into the function and mechanism of FTO.
