Cyber threats pose an increasing threat to energy objects. It is essential to ensure the cybersecurity of automatic control systems, such as relay protection devices (RP), devices of regime control (RC) and emergency control (EC), automated control systems. At the same time, the issues of cybersecurity include not only the problem of hacker attacks, but also the whole complex of problems relating to adequate functioning of cybernetic systems in the power industry. The authors consider two of the most acute aspects of cybersecurity in the energy systems of the future in the era of total digitalization: large-scale prepared cyber attacks on the electrical power systems (EPS) as a whole and large-scale cyber attacks on distribution networks with small-scale generation facilities and active consumers.

The authors propose a methodical approach to the analysis of the structure of automatic means of regime and emergency control in terms of their impact on the reliability and survivability of power systems (EPS), taking into account the known threats to cybersecurity.

Using a simple test example, this paper demonstrates that a weakly damped eigen-oscillation of an electric power system can lead to a loss of stability in the presence of its resonance with forcing oscillation. Such resonant interactions can risk the power system security, as confirmed by recent events in the Western American and Nordic power systems. Conventional eigenvalue analysis cannot detect the observed instability due to its non-linear nature. We show that the critical condition for the appearance of this type of instability can be the value of the perturbation energy accumulated in the system over time. To quantify the risk of stability loss, we examine the model of forcing oscillations and the resonance response of power system in a linear approximation and compare it with the simulation results for the two-area Kundur test system.

The state of the art of transient stability and steady-state (small signal) stability in power grids are reviewed. Transient stability concepts are illustrated with simple examples; in particular, we consider two machine learning-based methods for computing region of attraction: ROA produced by Neural Network Lyapunov Function; estimation of the ROA of IEEE 39-bus system using Gaussian process and Converse Lyapunov function. We discuss steady state stability in power systems, and using Prony’s modal analysis for evaluating small signal stability for the 7 Bus Test system and real French power system.

Further growth in renewable energy and planned electrification and decentralization of transport and heating loads in future power systems will result in a more complex unit commitment problem (UCP). This paper proposes an adaptive approach to load leveling problem using novel dynamic models based on the Volterra integral equations of the first kind with piecewise continuous kernels. This approach employs a direct numerical method. The considered collocation-type numerical method has the second-order accuracy and enjoys self-regularization properties, which is associated with confidence levels of system demand. This adaptive approach is suitable for energy storage optimization in real time. The efficiency of the proposed methodology is demonstrated on the Single Electricity Market of the Island of Ireland.

Increasing the intelligent level of the PS control systems caused by the implementation of Smart technologies changes the structure and the properties of PS and increases the importance of system reliability analysis. System reliability analysis includes two components – the balance analysis and the regime analysis. On the one hand, there are a large number of studies that assess the reliability of the power system examining various aspects and methods of solving this problem. In practice, the security analysis is limited by the calculations of power flows, static and dynamic stability for a number of forecast periods for the normal and repair circuits considering the most severe disturbances. The existing approach allows defining the requirements and adjusting emergency control systems, but does not allow evaluating and comparing solutions for power grid constructions. The authors propose a new method for power system reliability evaluation, which is suitable for planning development and operation of power systems. The method includes a general description of the algorithm which allows to compare various development scenarios, as well as to assess the reliability level of their implementation.

The existing approach allows defining the requirements and adjusting emergency control systems, but does not allow evaluating and comparing solutions for power grid constructions. The method includes a general description of the algorithm which allows to compare various development scenarios, as well as to assess the reliability level of their implementation. In particular, the method allows to determine where it is needed only the relay protection and emergency control system development, and where it is necessary grid, protection and control development and reconstruction.
