The dynamical and geometric structures of the Broad Line Region (BLR), along with the origins of continuum time delays in active galaxies, remain topics of ongoing debate. In this study, we aim to reproduce the broadband spectrum, the H$\beta$ line delay, and the continuum time delays available for the source NGC 5548. We employ the standard accretion disk model with the option of an inner hot flow, alongside the lamp-post model to account for disk irradiation and a BLR structure model based on radiation pressure acting on dust. The model is parameterized by the black hole mass (fixed), accretion rate, viewing angle, lamp-post height, cloud density, and cloud covering factor. The resulting continuum delays are calculated as a combination of disk reprocessing and the reprocessing of a fraction of radiation by the BLR. Our model reasonably reproduces the observed broad-band continuum, the H$\beta$ delay, and the continuum inter-band time delays measured during the observational campaign. When the accretion rate is not fixed based on the known distance to the source, we can directly estimate the distance from our model. The resulting value of H$_0$ = $69.03^{+17.81}_{-11.75}$ km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$ represents a noteworthy improvement compared to the findings of Cackett et al. (2007). This pilot study demonstrates that, with sufficient data coverage, it is possible to disentangle the time delays originating from the accretion disk and the BLR. This paves the way for effectively using inter-band continuum time delays in determining the Hubble constant. In rare-earth-based frustrated magnets, the synergistic interplay between spin correlations, spin-orbit coupling and competing exchange interactions provide a promising route to realize exotic quantum states with nontrivial excitations. Here, through thermodynamic and local-probe measurements down to 16 mK, we demonstrate the exotic magnetism and spin dynamics in the nearly perfect emergent honeycomb lattice antiferromagnet TbBO3. The latter embodies a frustrated lattice with a superimposed triangular lattice, constituted by additional Tb3+ ions at the center of each hexagon. Thermodynamic experiments reveal the presence of dominant antiferromagnetic interactions with no indications of either long-range order or spin freezing down to 50 mK. Despite sizable antiferromagnetic exchange interactions between the Tb3+ moments, muon-spin relaxation does not detect any signatures of long-range magnetic order or spin-freezing down to 16 mK. This suggests that the spin-orbit-driven anisotropic exchange interaction engenders a strong frustration, crucial to induce persistent spin dynamics. The specific-heat data exhibit a T^2.2 power-law behavior at low temperatures, suggesting gapless excitations consistent with theoretical predictions. The scaling of muon relaxation rate as a function of the characteristic energy scale for several spin-liquid candidates, including TbBO3, demonstrates a thermally activated behavior. This is consistent with NMR results on TbBO3 and reminiscent of a universal QSL behavior, here attributed to short-range spin correlations. Our experimental results are supported by density functional theory + Hubbard U and crystal electric-field calculations, which propose TbBO3 as a promising platform to realize the theoretically proposed quantum disorder state in an anisotropy-driven frustrated honeycomb lattice.

The 4D eigenvector 1 (E1) sequence has emerged as a powerful tool for organizing the observational and physical characteristics of type-1 active galactic nuclei (AGNs). In this study, we present a comprehensive analysis of the metallicity of the broad line region gas, incorporating both new data and previously published findings, to assess the presence of any trend along the sequence. We perform a multi-component analysis on the strongest UV and optical emission lines, compute $\sim 10$ diagnostic ratios, and compare them with the prediction of CLOUDY photoionization simulations, identifying a photoionization solution closest to the data. Our investigation reveals a consistent pattern along the optical plane of the E1. We observe a systematic progression in metallicity, ranging from sub-solar values to metallicity levels several times higher than solar values. These findings underscore the role of metallicity as a fundamental correlate of the 4DE1/main sequence. Extreme values of metallicity, at least several tens solar, are confirmed in low-$z$ AGNs radiating at a high Eddington ratio, although the origin of the extreme enrichment remains open to debate.

The Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) at the Vera C. Rubin Observatory is poised to observe thousands of quasars using the Deep Drilling Fields (DDF) across six broadband filters over a decade. Understanding quasar accretion disc (AD) time delays is pivotal for probing the physics of these distant objects. Pozo Nu\~nez et al. (2023) has recently demonstrated the feasibility of recovering AD time delays with accuracies ranging from 5\% to 20\%, depending on the quasar's redshift and time sampling intervals. Here we reassess the potential for measuring AD time delays under the current DDF observing cadence, which is placeholder until a final cadence is decided. We find that contrary to prior expectations, achieving reliable AD time delay measurements for quasars is significantly more challenging, if not unfeasible, due to the limitations imposed by the current observational strategies., Comment: Accepted as a research note in RNAAS; 3 pages, 1 figure

Exploring the physics of low-dimensional spin systems and their pressure-driven electronic and magnetic transitions are thriving research field in modern condensed matter physics. In this context, recently antiferromagnetic Cr-based compounds such as CrI3, CrBr3, CrGeTe3 have been investigated experimentally and theoretically for their possible spintronics applications. Motivated by the fundamental and industrial importance of these materials, we theoretically studied the electronic and magnetic properties of a relatively less explored Cr-based chalcogenide, namely LaCrS3 where 2D layers of magnetic Cr3+ ions form a rectangular lattice. We employed density functional theory + Hubbard U approach in conjunction with constrained random-phase approximation (cRPA) where the later was used to estimate the strength of U. Our findings at ambient pressure show that the system exhibits semiconducting antiferromagnetic ground state with a gap of 0.5 eV and large Cr moments that corresponds to nominal S=3/2 spin-state. The 1st nearest neighbor (NN) interatomic exchange coupling (J1) is found to be strongly antiferromagnetic (AFM), while 2nd NN couplings are relatively weaker ferromagnetic (FM), making this system a candidate for 1D non-frustrated antiferromagnetic spin-chain family of materials. Based on orbital resolved interactions, we demonstrated the reason behind two different types of interactions among 1st and 2nd NN despite their very similar bond lengths. We observe a significant spin-orbit coupling effect, giving rise to a finite magneto crystalline anisotropy, and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction. Further, we found that by applying uniaxial tensile strain along crystallographic a and b-axis, LaCrS3 exhibits a magnetic transition to a semi-conducting FM ground state, while compression gives rise to the realization of novel gapless semiconducting antiferromagnetic ground state., Comment: Accepted in Phys. We study in detail the inner 600 pc of the Seyfert 2 galaxy ESO138-G001 by means of the SOAR Integral Field Spectrograph (SIFS) attached to the SOAR telescope. This source is known for displaying a very rich coronal line spectrum and a blob of high-excitation emission ~3" SE of the active galactic nucleus (AGN). The nature of this emission has not been fully understood yet. The excellent spatial and spectral resolution of SIFS allows us to confirm that the bulk of the coronal line forest emission region is very compact, of ~0.8" in diameter, centred on the AGN and most likely powered by radiation from the AGN. In addition, evidence of a nuclear outflow, restricted to the inner 1" centred at the nucleus is found based on the detection of broad components in the most important emission lines. The gas in the inner few tens of parsecs filters out the AGN continuum so that the NLR is basically illuminated by a modified SED. This scenario is confirmed by means of photoionisation models that reproduce the most important lines detected in the SIFS field-of-view. From the modelling, we also found that the black hole mass M_BH of the AGN is about 10^5.5 solar mass, in agreement with previous X-ray observations. The spectrum of the SE blob is dominated by emission lines of low- to mid-ionisation, with no hints of coronal lines. Coronal-Line Forest Active Galactic Nuclei (CLiF AGN) are characterized by strong, high-ionization lines, which are in contrast to what is found in typical AGNs. Here, we carry out an infrared analysis aimed at understanding the spectral energy distribution of six sources from this group. In this work, the properties of the dusty torus for these objects are analyzed. To this purpose, we infer the physical and geometrical properties of the dust structure that surrounds the central region by fitting with models the spectral energy distribution (SED) of CLiF AGNs in the infrared. For this analysis, we compare the results of three models: CLUMPY, SKIRTOR and CAT3D-WIND. Using the Bayesian information criterion, SKIRTOR was found to have the most robust fit to the SEDs in five out of six galaxies. The remaining object was best fitted with CLUMPY. The results indicate that these objects are preferentially Type~I sources, supporting the detection of broad components in the permitted lines, likely associated with the BLR in the near-infrared (NIR) spectra. The best SED fitting indicates that the line of sight gives access to the view of the central source for these objects, but the amount of dusty clouds in the same direction is high, suggesting the hypothesis that they obscure the emission of the continuum produced by the central source and that the obscuration makes the coronal lines to not overlap with the continuum., Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures, submitted to MNRAS

We investigated a scenario where the presence of a broad absorption line (BAL) feature in quasars (QSOs) is contingent upon the line of sight being situated within an outflow cone emanating from the source. We examined the mechanism of dust-driven winds based on the failed radiatively accelerated dusty outflow (FRADO) model proposed by Czerny & Hryniewicz, letting it be responsible for the formation of massive outflow. We calculated the probability of observing the BAL effect from the geometry of outflow which is a function of global parameters of black hole mass (M$_{BH}$), Eddington ratio ($\alpha_{Edd}$), and metallicity (Z). We then compared the results with prevalence of BAL QSOs in a sample of observational data from SDSS. We present the wavelength-resolved reverberation mapping (RM) of combined MgII and UV FeII broad-line emissions for two intermediate redshifts (z$\sim$1), luminous quasars - HE 0413-4031 and HE 0435-4312, monitored by the SALT and 1-m class telescopes between 2012-2022. Through this technique, we aim to disentangle the Mg II and FeII emission regions and to build a radius-luminosity relation for UV FeII emission, which has so far remained unconstrained. Several methodologies have been applied to constrain the time delays for total MgII and FeII emissions. In addition, this technique is performed to quantify the inflow or outflow of broad-line region gas around the supermassive black hole and to disentangle the emission/emitting regions from lines produced in proximity to each other. The mean total FeII time delay is nearly equal to the mean total Mg II time delay for HE 0435-4312 suggesting a co-spatiality of their emissions. However, in HE 0413-4031, the mean FeII time delay is found to be longer than the mean MgII time delay, suggesting that FeII is produced at longer distances from the black hole. The UV Fe II R-L relation is updated with these two quasars and compared with the optical FeII relation, which suggests that the optical FeII region is located further than the UV FeII by a factor of 1.7-1.9 i.e. $R_{\rm FeII-opt}\sim(1.7-1.9)R_{\rm FeII-UV}$. We detected a weak pattern in the time delay vs. wavelength relation, suggesting that the MgII broad-line originates a bit closer to the SMBH than the UV FeII, however, the difference is not very significant. Comparison of MgII, UV, and optical FeII R-L relations suggests that the difference may be larger for lower-luminosity sources, possibly with the MgII emission originating further from the SMBH. In this article we consider the corresponding signless Laplacian matrix $Q(\mathcal{H})$ and discuss about its spectrum.

Photometric reverberation mapping can detect the radial extent of the accretion disc (AD) in Active Galactic Nuclei by measuring the time delays between light curves observed in different continuum bands. Quantifying the constraints on the efficiency and accuracy of the delay measurements is important for recovering the AD size-luminosity relation, and potentially using quasars as standard candles. We have explored the possibility of determining the AD size of quasars using next-generation Big Data surveys. We focus on the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) at the Vera C. Rubin Observatory, which will observe several thousand quasars with the Deep Drilling Fields and up to 10 million quasars for the main survey in six broadband filter during its 10-year operational lifetime. We have developed extensive simulations that take into account the characteristics of the LSST survey and the intrinsic properties of the quasars. The simulations are used to characterise the light curves from which AD sizes are determined using various algorithms. We find that the time delays can be recovered with an accuracy of 5 and 15% for light curves with a time sampling of 2 and 5 days, respectively. The results depend strongly on the redshift of the source and the relative contribution of the emission lines to the bandpasses. In the present study, we have discussed the up-turn behavior in the resistivity pattern of the topological nodal line semimetal InBi. We argued that such nature could be generalized with a mathematical model, that can be applied to any compounds exhibiting similar behavior. The extremely high magnetoresistance (XMR) has also been explained by the carrier compensation in the compound, estimated from the Hall conductivity. Moreover, from the study of Subhnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillation and density functional theory (DFT), we obtained the complete three-dimensional (3D) Fermi surface topology of the compound InBi. A detailed understanding of carriers' behavior has been discussed using those studies. We have also unfurled the topology of each electron and hole pocket and its possible modulation with electron and hole doping.

Dimerized quantum magnets provide a unique possibility to investigate Bose-Einstein condensation of magnetic excitations in crystalline systems at low temperature. Here, we model the low-temperature magnetic properties of the recently synthesized spin $S=1$ dimer system K${}_2$Ni(MoO${}_4$)$_2$ and propose it as a new candidate material for triplon and quintuplon condensation. Based on a first principles analysis of its electronic structure, we derive an effective spin-dimer model that we first solve within a mean-field approximation to refine its parameters in comparison to experiment. Finally, the model is solved by employing a numerically exact quantum Monte Carlo technique which leads to magnetic properties in good agreement with experimental magnetization and thermodynamic results. We discuss the emergent spin model of K${}_2$Ni(MoO${}_4$)$_2$ in view of condensation of magnetic excitations in a broad parameter regime. Removing noise from the any processed images is very important. Noise should be removed in such a way that important information of image should be preserved. A decisionbased nonlinear algorithm for elimination of band lines, drop lines, mark, band lost and impulses in images is presented in this paper. The algorithm performs two simultaneous operations, namely, detection of corrupted pixels and evaluation of new pixels for replacing the corrupted pixels. Removal of these artifacts is achieved without damaging edges and details. However, the restricted window size renders median operation less effective whenever noise is excessive in that case the proposed algorithm automatically switches to mean filtering. The performance of the algorithm is analyzed in terms of Mean Square Error [MSE], Peak-Signal-to-Noise Ratio [PSNR], Signal-to-Noise Ratio Improved [SNRI], Percentage Of Noise Attenuated [PONA], and Percentage Of Spoiled Pixels [POSP]. This is compared with standard algorithms already in use and improved performance of the proposed algorithm is presented. This paper proposes a new technique based on a non-linear Minmax Detector Based (MDB) filter for image restoration. The aim of image enhancement is to reconstruct the true image from the corrupted image. The process of image acquisition frequently leads to degradation and the quality of the digitized image becomes inferior to the original image. Image degradation can be due to the addition of different types of noise in the original image. Image noise can be modelled of many types and impulse noise is one of them. Impulse noise generates pixels with gray value not consistent with their local neighbourhood. It appears as a sprinkle of both light and dark or only light spots in the image. Filtering is a technique for enhancing the image. Linear filter is the filtering in which the value of an output pixel is a linear combination of neighborhood values, which can produce blur in the image. Thus a variety of smoothing techniques have been developed that are non linear. Median filter is the one of the most popular non-linear filter. When considering a small neighborhood it is highly efficient but for large window and in case of high noise it gives rise to more blurring to image. The Centre Weighted Mean (CWM) filter has got a better average performance over the median filter. However the original pixel corrupted and noise reduction is substantial under high noise condition. Hence this technique has also blurring affect on the image. We present the results of the reverberation monitoring aimed at MgII broad line and FeII pseudocontinuum for the luminous quasar CTS C30.10 (z = 0.90052) with the Southern African Large Telescope covering the years 2012-2021. We aimed at disentangling the MgII and UV FeII variability and the first measurement of UV FeII time delay for a distant quasar. We used several methods for time-delay measurements and determined both FeII and MgII time delays as well as performed a wavelength-resolved time delay study for a combination of MgII and FeII in the 2700 - 2900 \AA restframe wavelength range. We obtain the time delay for MgII of $275.5^{+12.4}_{-19.5}$ days in the rest frame, while for FeII we have two possible solutions of $270.0^{+13.8}_{-25.3}$ days and $180.3^{+26.6}_{-30.0}$ in the rest frame. Combining this result with the old measurement of FeII UV time delay for NGC 5548 we discuss for the first time the radius-luminosity relation for UV FeII with the slope consistent with $0.5$ within uncertainties. Since FeII time delay has a shorter time-delay component but lines are narrower than MgII, we propose that the line delay measurement is biased towards the BLR part facing the observer, with the bulk of the Fe II emission may arise from the more distant BLR region, one that is shielded from the observer., Comment: 22 pages, 19 Figures, 6 Tables, Submitted to Astronomy and Astrophysics, Comments are welcome

The last few years have seen the confirmation of several trends associated with the quasar main sequence. The idea of a main sequence for quasars is relatively recent, and its full potential for the observational classification and contextualization of quasar properties has yet to be fully exploited. The main sequence drivers are discussed in terms of the properties of extreme objects. We briefly summarize developments that constrain the viewing angle of the accretion disk in a particular class of quasars (extreme Population B, radiating at low Eddington ratio), as well as inferences on the chemical composition of the broad line emitting gas, and on the nature of radio emission along the quasar main sequence., Comment: Paper presented at the XIII SCSLSA, to appear in Astronomische Nachrichten

Competing magnetic interactions in low-dimensional quantum magnets can lead to the exotic ground state with fractionalized excitations. Herein, we present our results on an S = 5/2 quasi-one-dimensional spin system Bi3FeMo2O12. The structure of Bi3FeMo2O12 consists of very well separated, infinite zig-zag S = 5/2 spin chains. The observation of a broad maximum around 10 K in the magnetic susceptibility suggests the presence of short-range spin correlations. Magnetic susceptibility data do not fit to S=5/2 uniform spin chain model due to the presence of 2nd nearest-neighbor coupling (J2) along with the 1st nearest-neighbor coupling J1 of the zig-zag chain. The electronic structure calculations infer that the value of J1 is comparable with J2 (J2/J1~1.1) with a negligible inter-chain interaction (J'/J ~ 0.01), implying that Bi3FeMo2O12 is a highly frustrated triangular chain system. The absence of magnetic long-range ordering down to 0.2 K is seen in the heat capacity data, despite a relatively large antiferromagnetic Curie-Weiss temperature of -40 K. The magnetic heat capacity follows nearly a linear behavior at low temperatures indicating that the S = 5/2 anisotropic triangular chain exhibits the gapless excitations., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, 1 table

The quantum spin liquid (QSL) is an exotic phase of magnetic materials where the spins continue to fluctuate without any symmetry breaking down to zero temperature. Among the handful reports of QSL with spin $S\ge$1, examples with magnetic ions on a three-dimensional magnetic lattice are extremely rare since both larger spin and higher dimension tend to suppress quantum fluctuations. In this work, we offer a new strategy to achieve 3-D QSL with high spin by utilizing two types of transition metal ions, both are magnetically active but located at crystallographically inequivalent positions. We design a 3-D magnetic system Ba$_3$NiIr$_2$O$_9$ consisting of interconnected corner shared NiO$_6$ octahedra and face shared Ir$_2$O$_9$ dimer, both having triangular arrangements in \textit{a-b} plane. X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements confirm the presence of Ni$^{2+}$ ($S$=1). Our detailed thermodynamic and magnetic measurements reveal that this compound is a realization of gapless QSL state down to at least 100 mK. Ab-initio calculations find a strong magnetic exchange between Ir and Ni sublattices and in-plane antiferromagnetic coupling between the dimers, resulting in dynamically fluctuating magnetic moments on both the Ir and Ni sublattice., Comment: 4 Figures
