Application service providers (ASP) seemed to have a bright future in 1999, but they have encountered difficult times in 2000. A shakeout predicted by Gartner Group has begun, and Pandesic, formerly regarded as an industry leader, has failed. Various reasons for the failure are cited. For example, a revenue strategy that asked for a 2 percent cut of everything sold over a Pandesic website attracted small dotcoms, which Pandesic needed least, but discouraged large retailers, which Pandesic needed most. Industry analysts say ASPs that hope to survive will need to specialize.
