Butterfly pea flower ( Clitoria ternatea ) may serve as an alternative anti-dandruff treatment; however, its effects on Malassezia spp. remain unexplored. The aim of this study was to explore the effects of C. ternatea as an herbal-based anti-dandruff treatment on Malassezia spp. DNA expression, plakoglobin levels, IL-8 levels, sebum levels, dandruff severity scores, adverse effects, and patient satisfaction. An experimental study with a pretest-posttest control design was conducted at the Outpatient Clinic of Dermatology and Venereology, Arifin Achmad Hospital, Pekanbaru, Indonesia, from November 2023 to January 2024. The flower of C. ternatea was used to formulate the shampoo. The study involved 70 female patients aged 18-25 with dandruff, who were divided into two groups: (a) experimental group using 20% C. ternatea shampoo and (b) control group using 2% ketoconazole shampoo. The present study found that 2% ketoconazole shampoo significantly reduced Malassezia spp. DNA expression compared to 20% C. ternatea shampooo ( Clitoria ternatea : ΔCq=1.76±3.18; ketoconazole: ΔCq=3.77±2.90; p =0.008). No significant difference was observed in plakoglobin levels ( C. ternatea : ΔCq=1.98±3.63; ketoconazole: ΔCq=2.50±2.36; p =0.427) or IL-8 levels ( C. ternatea : ΔCq=3.46±4.00; ketoconazole: ΔCq=4.16 ± 3.62; p =0.459). C. ternatea significantly reduced sebum levels more than ketoconazole ( C. ternatea : 1.16±0.98%; ketoconazole: 0.22±0.38%; p <0.001). Dandruff scores and patient satisfaction were similar for both shampoos ( p =0.115 and p =0.336, respectively). Adverse effects were more common in the 2% ketoconazole shampoo group, affecting 21.2% of the patients. In conclusion, 2% ketoconazole shampoo is more effective in reducing Malassezia spp. DNA expression, while 20% C. ternatea shampoo offers better sebum control. Background: Typhoid fever is an acute disease caused by Salmonella typhimurium that can invade the liver and cause symptoms of hepatomegaly,jaundice.Biochemically, these symptoms can be assessed by seeing the SGPT and SGOT levels increase. Pirdot Leaf is an herbal plant found in the Toba area of North Sumatra which has a lot of bioactive potential,namely flavonoids,steroids, saponins. Flavonoids are active substances that can overcome the inflammatory process, it is expected that the administration of Pirdot leaf extract can reduce levels of SGOT and SGPT in mice induced Salmonella Typhimurium., Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of ethanol extract of pirdot leaves on SGPT and SGOT values in rat models induced by Salmonella typhimurium. Methods: This study used 32 samples divided into four groups namely: Normal group, Negative group, Positive group and Treatment group. Results: The results were obtained for normal control SGPT (27,85) negative control (37,80) positive control (27,30) and for Dick treatment (26,21). Background: As broad-spectrum antibiotics can cause antimicrobial resistance in sepsis, there is the need for a complementary therapy to combat sepsis. Oxidative stress causes an increased severity and mortality in sepsis, whereas herbal medicines have been considered as an option due to its antioxidant potential. Coleus amboinicus Lour. has been documented for its therapeutic value due to the presence of flavonoid, an antioxidant compound., Objective: To study the effect of Coleus amboinicus Lour. leaf extract on total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and hepatic catalase (CAT) levels in septic rat model., Methods: Twenty-eight male Rattus norvegicus rats were divided into four groups: control (rats without sepsis induction and treatment), group 1 (septic rats treated with antibiotics), group 2 (septic rats treated with antibiotics and 250 mg/kg body weight of Coleus amboinicus Lour. leaf extract), and group 3 (septic rats treated with antibiotics and 500 mg/kg body weight of Coleus amboinicus Lour. leaf extract). The rats were sacrificed at the end of the eighth day of observation, and blood and liver tissues were gathered for examination., Results: Compared to the septic rat groups treated with only antibiotics, there was an increase in the TAC levels and CAT expression levels in septic rat groups given antibiotics and Coleus amboinicus Lour. leaf extract. However, the increase was not significant., Conclusion: Administering Coleus amboinicus Lour. leaf extract increases TAC levels and CAT expression levels in sepsis, decreasing oxidative stress. Background: The Increasing in type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) needs to solve comprehensively and holistically. Patients with T2DM should have self-coping due to lifestyle modification. Abdominal fat accumulation can release pro-inflammatory cytokine that leads TLR-2 and TLR-4 to the response. These two kinds of toll-like receptors exist on the monocyte surface membrane which is an innate immunity cell., Objective: The aims of this study were to get the profile of physical activity, metabolic state, and mononuclear cell response to the expression of the TLR2 and TLR4 genes in T2DM patients., Methods: It was a descriptive-analytic study with a cross-sectional study design. Thirty-two eligible patients with inclusion criteria participated as subjects. All subjects answered questions by IPAQ, and checked metabolic state with body composition analysis. The TLR2 and TLR4 gene expression was determined with quantitative Real- Time PCR., Results: This study result found that most T2DM patients were in a highly active category in which most of their activity was walking (light intensity). The average abdominal circumferences were 91.81 ± 15.4 cm, body fat percentage was 29.5 ± 8.8%, and fasting blood sugar was 187.07 ± 67.03 mg/dl. Mononuclear cells number were normal. The expression of the TLR2 gene was lower by 0.71 fold and TLR4 gene expression was lower by 0.9 fold compared with non-DM (p<0.05). By chi-square test, there was a positive correlation between TLR2 gene expression with fasting blood glucose (p=0.011, and a positive correlation between the abdominal circumference and TLR4 gene expression (p=0.011)., Conclusion: Type-2 Diabetes mellitus patients in primary health care keep walking as their physical activity to maintain blood glucose. Background: The rapid development of medical technology in managing breast cancer patients still cannot solve the problem of recurrence and resistance. One of the causes of recurrence and molecular resistance is the presence of breast cancer stem cells (BCSCs). Clinacanthus nutans (C.nutans) is a plant found in Medan, North Sumatra, Indonesia. This plant is believed to have anticancer activity in community., Objective: Our study aimed to assess phytochemical of C.nutans leaves, isolate breast cancer stem cells and determine the cytotoxic effects of the ethanolic extract and water extract of C.nutans leaves on breast cancer stem cells at 24, 48, and 72 h of observation., Methods: We underwent the cytotoxic test by using MTT assay and isolated breast cancer stem cells by using MACS and validated them by mammosphere test., Results: We found alkaloids, flavonoids, glycosides and tannins in simplicia and all extracts. BCSCs was valid with the diameter of the mammosphere BCSCs was > 60 μm. The IC50 values of 100%, 60%, 40%, 20% EE, and WE of C.nutans leaves were 227.30; 46.05; 31.12; 98.54, and 16.16 μg/ml respectively in the first 24 hours. In administering WE of C.nutans leaves, BCSCs viability was decreased at 24,48 and 72 hours of observation, namely 69.29±26%; 75.82 ± 21.02% and 38.94±9.34 % (p < 0.0001)., Conclusion: The WE of C.nutans leaves had more substantial cytotoxic potential against BCSCs than the EE. The capability of WE C.nutans leaves to suppress BCSC's viability was time-dependent. Therefore, the use of plants as an herbal medicine has the potential to be developed in Indonesia. Aloe vera contains various active ingredients that help the wound healing process, such as glucomannan and acemannan which have the effects on the proliferation of macrophages, fibroblasts, and re-epithelialization. This study aimed to determine the effect of Aloe vera extract in repairing post-burn skin in rats that were analyzed from the number of macrophages, fibroblasts, and epidermal thickness. Methods : This is an experimental study with a posttest-only control group design using 54 Rattus norvegicus Wistar strain rats. The sampling method was simple random sampling consisting of 3 groups, i.e., I. standard group, which were normal rats; II. negative control group, which were given second-degree burns and treated with gel base (without Aloe vera extract); III. treatment groups, which were given second-degree burns and treated with Aloe vera extract gel. Each group was subdivided into three smaller groups (n = 6) according to the time the lesions were evaluated. Skin tissue samplings were carried out on days 3, 14, and 21 after injury to observe the number of macrophages, fibroblasts, and epidermal thickness. Results : There were significant differences in the mean number of macrophages, number of fibroblasts, and epidermal thickness in all groups ( p <0.05). Monosodium glutamate (MSG) is often added in foods to enhance the flavor. It has adverse effect to body organs. Natural remedies, such as: gambier have been known for generations used to improve health. Substances contained in gambier, i.e.: catechins are believed to reduce the occurrence of hepatotoxicity. The study aims to analyze the effects of gambier in reducing the hepatotoxicity of MSG. This study with a posttest only control group design. Mice amount 25 (5 groups, n = 5/group). All interventions are given orally for 4 weeks. At the end of the study, it carried out euthanasia taken the liver of mice to made histopathology preparations then examine by light microscope, ×400, ×5 view field. Liver damage was found in each group with various levels of histological appearance:(I) 2 normal, 2 minimal, 1 moderate and none severe; (II) none normal, 1 minimal, 3 moderate and 1 severe; (III) 1 normal, 4 minimal, none moderate and severe;, (IV) 2 normal, 3 minimal, none moderate and severe; and (V) 4 normal, 1 minimal, none moderate, and severe. The data were analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis test. The level of liver damage among all groups was significantly different ( p = 0.017). The same on the Dunn test also showed the level of liver damage in Group-II to compare with other groups ( p < 0.05). Background: Hypercholesterolemia is a condition where cholesterol levels in the body exceed the normal range. In Indonesia, the development of traditional medicine is carried out by examining plants known for their medicinal qualities, including cinnamon ( Cinnamomum burmannii ). There are many nutritional components contained in cinnamon, such as cinnamaldehyde. This has been suggested as a substance that can reduce cholesterol and triglyceride levels. This study was conducted to determine the efficacy of cinnamon in reducing total cholesterol levels of mice (Mus musculus ) given high-fat feed. Methods: This is an experimental study with a pre-post control study design. The groupings were performed by a simple random sampling method. There were five groups (n=6/group): 1) Negative control (aquadest); 2) positive control of high-fat containing food (HFC; quail's yolk); 3) HFC + cinnamon extract (CE; dose 2mg/20g body weight (BW); 4) HFC + CE (dose 4mg/20gBW); 5) HFC + CE (dose 8mg/20gBW). The study was conducted for 28 days. The intervention of CE started on day 15 and ended on day 28. Measurement of total cholesterol and BW of mice was performed on days 0, 14 and 28. Results: A decrease in the total cholesterol of mice ( p = 0.001) was found in the groups that consumed CE. However, there was not a significant change between groups in mice BW ( p = 0.419). The therapy of synthetic drugs has side effects that can be fatal (rhabdomyolysis). Needed to find natural remedies with minimal side effects. There are many nutritional components contained in cinnamon, such as cinnamaldehyde. The cinnamaldehyde, a substance that is thought to affect cholesterol levels. The study aims to determine the efficacy of Cinnamomum burmannii in lowering total cholesterol levels of mice (Mus musculus ) given high-fat feed. Methods: This is an experimental study with a pre-post control study design. The groupings were performed by a simple random sampling method. The male mice were divided into five groups (n=6/group): 1) negative control (aquadest); 2) positive control of high-fat containing food (HFC; quail yolk); 3) HFC + cinnamon extract (CE; dose 2mg/20g body weight (BW); 4) HFC + CE (dose 4mg/20gBW); 5) HFC + CE (dose 8mg/20gBW). The study was conducted for 28 days. Consumption of quail yolk as HFC to increasing cholesterol in mice. The intervention of CE started on day 15 and ended on day 28. Measurement of total cholesterol and BW of mice was performed on days 0, 14 and 28. Results: The comparison of total cholesterol levels in the K1 group (120.3 ± 5.53 mg/dl) to K2 (107.3 ± 3.61 mg/dl), K3 (106.8 ± 4.57 mg/dl) and K4 (106.7 ± 0.51 mg/dl) showed decreased significantly different (p = 0.001) in groups consuming CE. However, there was not a significant change between groups in mice BW (p = 0.419). Aim: To study the protective effect of medicines on the formation of atherosclerosis in mice, it is needed to conduct the study in mice which is not genetically diabetic mice induced by streptozotocin (STZ) to produce hyperglycemia and atherosclerosis, compared with mice treated by yolk or its combination., Material and Methods: Fifty-six mice, Double Deutch Webster strain, male, receive 10 weeks, 20 - 30 gr bodyweight were divided into 4 groups (n = 14) i.e. control (do not received any agents), STZ (45 mg/kg/BW was injected intraperitoneally for 5 days), yolk (0.2 cc orally daily for 6 weeks), and combination of STZ and yolk (., Stz: 45 mg/kg/BW intraperitoneally add 0.2 cc yolk orally). All animals were executed in the 42nd day. Then, the aorta of the mice's heart tissue was histopathology examined. Blood glucose and cholesterol levels were determined every week., Results: Hyperglycemia occurred in mice induced by STZ injection with the highest BGL (521.8 ± 48.2 mg/dl; 188.4%) in the 4th-week observation; after that BGL decrease. We found that, except the control, all treatment groups with STZ, egg yolk, and combination underwent atherosclerosis., Conclusion: The present study was able to demonstrate the occurrence of atherosclerosis in mice treated by STZ accompanied with increasing blood glucose and cholesterol level.
