The three cutting-edge technologies virtual reality, blockchain, and 5G have increasingly attracted public attention. While virtual reality became a popular concept in the 1990s, recent technological advances and decreased costs have created a resurgence in the technology. With significant funding and early adoption, blockchain and 5G have begun to make their mark on the world. Each technology alone may disrupt business and society, but, together, they provide multiple opportunities. In this paper, we summarize a 2018 Association for Information Systems Americas Conference on Information Systems (AMCIS) panel session with IS researchers and industry practitioners that tackled important topics related to these technologies. In particular, the panel made the case for IS research that focuses on topics that emerge when these technologies intersect. Each panelist presented their perspectives based on their experience and knowledge along with current issues and future directions. This topic has significant business implications as practitioners continue to note their advancements and develop strategies to adapt in a rapidly changing environment. The topic also has implications for future research as these technologies continue to become more prevalent.

More than 600 universities across the world have signed the Race to Zero for Universities and Colleges to date supporting a three-point plan, in line with the Race to Zero criteria. The ambition is to achieve more than 1000 universities across the world to commit to becoming net-zero ahead of COP26. This panel session will feature signatories from across the global to highlight the climate actions being taken on the ground. We will show a video from Gonzalo Munoz, Chilean High Level Climate Champion for COP25 on why universities need to take action now ahead of discussion from the panel. The Race to Zero campaign will feature heavily at COP26 and this is an opportunity to raise the profile of universities across the world in their role within society to tackle the climate crisis. This session will galvanise universities to take action and to commit to net-zero ahead of COP26.

The anniversary of a number of significant signal processing algorithms from the 1960s, including the least mean square algorithm and the Kalman filter, provided an opportunity at ICASSP 2019 to reflect on the links between education and innovation. This led ultimately to the proposal of some special sessions as well a panel session that would provide some insight, via a historical perspective, consideration of the current status, and an assessment of the emerging educational future.

This report summarizes a panel session on gamification designs at the 2019 European Conference on Information Systems in Stockholm, Sweden. The panel explored a research agenda for gamification design. The panel considered the “what, why, and how” to analyze state-of-the-art gamification research. We present an adapted definition of gamification as one outcome of the workshop to better describe what gamification is and what it can be used for. We discuss “why” and “how” to employ gamification for different contexts. Researchers and practitioners can use the report’s research questions and insights to gamify information systems, identity outcomes that gamification concepts address, and explore new ways to gamify. Overall, we present new areas for future research and practice by identifying innovative ways to bring existing gamification concepts to a more impactful level.

Consumer technology (CT) has a broad amount of fields of application, among which one of the most important ones is represented by healthcare and well-being. Thanks to the quick technological development of ICT, CT have become widespread throughout the citizenship, allowing one to easily self-monitor his/her physiological parameters, checking for eventually dangerous values that could require the assistance from a medical doctor or caregiver. This panel session aims at presenting some CT solutions supporting healthcare during the life cycle of an individual, from early days until later life, providing hints about some of the possible conditions representing the major threats to healthy life throughout the years.

Several “story” formats are used by software researchers and practitioners to document research results and share best practices. Research papers are the staple of software conferences and journals: papers report the results of research projects and a wide range of empirical experiments. Experience reports and software patterns are two alternative formats to share results and propagate knowledge and best practices. Experience reports relate experience and cautionary tales while software patterns distill experience into a compact form. An XP2021 panel session orchestrated by Steven Fraser – featuring panelists Ademar Aguiar, Casper Lassenius, Mary Lynn Manns, Ken Power, and Rebecca Wirfs-Brock – discussed how “story” formats each have a role to advance the practice of software engineering.

The COVID-19 pandemic has tested our medical leaders like no other health crisis in living memory. The challenges faced by our profession have prompted many colleagues to reflect frankly on their own leadership capabilities and potential. November 2020’s ‘Leaders in Healthcare’ conference1 aimed to empower and inspire clinicians to become better healthcare leaders. During the conference’s ‘UK 4 nations CMO’ panel session, the chief medical officers (CMOs) discussed their experiences of leadership throughout the pandemic. Dr Frank Atherton (Wales), Dr Michael McBride (Northern Ireland), Dr Gregor Smith (Scotland) and Professor Chris Whitty (England) reflected with candour on their experiences as CMO of each nation during the COVID-19 pandemic and the sometimes difficult lessons they have learnt as leaders over this period. As well as the onerous task presented trying to keep a foot in each camp of the medical and political worlds, the CMOs have borne the additional strain of being catapulted into a demanding, relentless media spotlight. While being heralded as celebrities of the pandemic epoch, this has inevitably led to vilification in the public and on social media. These experiences have provided them with a powerful platform that also generates abundant opportunities for self-reflection. In sharing their experiences, we can better understand our own potential as leaders in addition to the pitfalls that leadership as a clinician can bring. It was striking how many of their reflections on the particular challenges of being senior leaders during the pandemic aligned closely with some of the challenges faced by clinicians in their everyday work. This interview revealed that much of our clinical training and professional experience builds generic skills within our workforce that form the foundations used by senior leaders in times of crisis. The mandate of the Prognostics and Health Management (PHM) Society includes attention to standards because of their benefit in providing generally accepted technical specifications thus enabling adoption of practices across the health management domain. While there are a number of other organizations with strong foci on standards, the society recognizes the need for harmonization and coordination in this field. This communication summarizes observations from the standards panel session during 2012 PHM conference with participants from the Federal Aviation Administration, Institute for Electrical and Electronic Engineers, International Standards Organization and Society of Automotive Engineering. Steps for a way forward are proposed and mechanisms for interested parties to participate are suggested.

Introduction: There are four objectives to this paper: (1) To determine whether undergraduates enrolled in Health-Sciences studies agree with the use of human stem cells for medical research, treatment and genetic uses. (2) Whether they would consider the use of pre-implantation-embryos for medical research. (3) Whether attitudes toward the previous two issues are linked to gender, field of study, transcendental/spiritual convictions and political biases. (4) A panel of discussion will modify their opinion. Results: The present study shows that, before attending a discussion panel session, media was the main source of information that the students had on the surveyed topics. A discussion panel was useful for clarifying respondents’ opinions on the explored items. Significantly, the discussion panel had an influence on those respondents who did not have a formed opinion on the explored items. Conclusions: A discussion panel is a convenient, but limited tool, in the shaping of undergraduate opinions on ethically controversial scientific matters. Resumen: Introducción: Los objetivos de este artículo son conocer si: 1) los estudiantes de pregrado matriculados en titulaciones de grado de ciencias de la salud están de acuerdo con la utilización de las células madre humanas para la investigación médica de los embriones preimplantatorios, la cura de enfermedades y los usos génicos; 2) consideran el uso de los embriones preimplantatorios humanos para la investigación; 3) las actitudes hacia los 2 temas anteriores están relacionadas con el género, el grado universitario en curso, la afiliación política y las convicciones trascendentales o espirituales, y 4) conocer si un panel de discusión, con expertos, modifica esas opiniones. Resultados: Los resultados del presente estudio mostraron que antes del panel de discusión, los medios de comunicación eran la principal fuente de información de los encuestados sobre los temas estudiados. El panel de discusión fue útil para aclarar las opiniones de los encuestados, aprobar o desaprobar los ítems explorados. Significativamente, el panel de discusión influyó en los encuestados que dijeron que no tenían una opinión formada sobre los ítems explorados antes del panel de discusión. Conclusiones: El panel de discusión es una herramienta conveniente pero limitada en la formación de las opiniones de los estudiantes de pregrado en titulaciones de ciencias de la salud sobre cuestiones científicas éticamente controvertidas.

The ACM Data Science Taskforce was established in 2017 by the ACM Education Council and tasked with articulating the role of computing discipline-specific contributions to the emerging field of data science. This taskforce is seeking to define what the computing contributions are to this multidisciplinary field, in order to provide guidance for computer science or similar departments offering data science programs of study at the undergraduate level. This panel session will provide an update of the work of the ACM Data Science Taskforce and will engage the ITiCSE international community in this effort. Panelists are members of the taskforce and will report on version 2 of a draft report released Fall 2019, and the activities to-date, including a summary of data science curricular efforts, as well as the current articulation of computing competencies. This session should be of interest to all conference attendees, but especially faculty developing bachelors-level curricula in Data Science.

While I am not claiming credit for this year's panel session devoted to the question of intercommunion in the context of College Theology Society's convention with Baptist participation, I am deeply gratified that we as the church's theologians, Baptist and Catholic, are now raising the question in this manner, and that Professor Freeman has made clear for us what the ground rules seem to be for playing the hypothetical game of Baptist-Catholic intercommunion at a CTS convention. I have nothing to add to his spot-on summary of the Baptist “rules” for open communion and the Catholic “rules” for exceptional intercommunion articulated in the documents he has cited.

The characteristic clinical signs of chronic wounds, which remain in a state of prolonged inflammation, include increased production of devitalised tissue and exudate, pain and malodour. The presence of necrotic tissue, slough and copious exudate encourages microbial proliferation, potentially resulting in planktonic and/or biofilm infection. For patients, the consequences can include leakage of exudate, pain and reduced mobility, which can impair their ability to socialise and perform activities of daily living. This can severely reduce their quality of life and wellbeing. Concentrated surfactant-based gels (Plurogel and Plurogel SSD) are used in wound cleansing to help manage devitalised tissue. In vitro studies indicate they can sequester planktonic microbes and biofilm from the wound bed, although there is, limited clinical evidence to support this. A group of health professionals who have used this concentrated surfactant gel, in combination with standard care, in their clinical practice for several years recently met at a closed panel session. Here, they present case studies where topical application of these gels resulted in positive clinical outcomes in previously long-standing recalcitrant wounds. In all cases, the reduction in inflammation and bioburden alleviated symptoms that previously severely impaired health-related quality of life and wellbeing.

The rate of technological change is quickly outpacing today's methods for understanding how new advancements are applied within industrial-organizational (I-O) psychology. To further complicate matters, specific attempts to explain observed differences or measurement equivalence across devices are often atheoretical or fail to explain why a technology should (or should not) affect the measured construct. As a typical example, understanding how technology influences construct measurement in personnel testing and assessment is critical for explaining or predicting other practical issues such as accessibility, security, and scoring. Therefore, theory development is needed to guide research hypotheses, manage expectations, and address these issues at this intersection of technology and I-O psychology. This article is an extension of a Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP) 2016 panel session, which (re)introduces conceptual frameworks that can help explain how and why measurement equivalence or nonequivalence is observed in the context of selection and assessment. We outline three potential conceptual frameworks as candidates for further research, evaluation, and application, and argue for a similar conceptual approach for explaining how technology may influence other psychological phenomena.

The pursuit of mastery in coaching is an ongoing journey, requiring a commitment to life-long learning (Gallimore, Gilbert, & Nater, 2014). The purpose of this paper is to share the insight of five professionals (i.e., educator, sport ethicist, administrator, sport researcher, and a coach), participating in a panel session at the 2016 U.S. National Coaching Conference, on pursuing mastery as a coach. The term mastery is often associated with expertise. To be considered an expert, a coach must also be effective (Côté & Gilbert, 2009). Coaches that have achieved this level of effectiveness are often referred to as master teachers. Across the session the views of the panel members emphasized the pursuit of mastery as an ongoing journey of continuous learning. Insight from the panelists is compared with literature in coaching science and recommendations are provided for coaches and coaching educators on how to deliberately pursue mastery as a coach.

Publishers, vendors and librarians often discuss the needs of the researcher. However, it is not often that information professionals have the opportunity to sit down with a group of researchers, listen to their perspective and ask them questions. The UKSG One-Day Conference held in London in November 2016 offered such an opportunity with a panel session of researchers chaired by Charlie Rapple of Kudos. The researchers shared with us their frustrations about scholarly communications ecosystems and their ideas for improvements. A major source of frustration is the need for academics to publish, and publish well, to keep their jobs and progress. In doing so, they face what seem to be often insurmountable obstacles that they feel powerless to address or change. Themes of the session were the lack of incentives to peer review and join editorial boards, the role of social networking sites, open access and collaboration with libraries. The researchers who so generously gave us their time are Professor Andy Miah (University of Salford), Dr Micheal O Fathartaigh (Dublin Business School) and Dr Sabina Michnowicz (Hazard Centre, University College London).

This paper summarises a structured panel session regarding the cost of innovation in healthcare. The debate took place during the 2016 Simnovate Conference at McGill University. The audience, panel members and venue largely included members from academia as well as representatives from industry and organised medicine. The goal of the debate was to consider a balanced argument regarding the views of healthcare innovation and the associated costs. VJD ### Demand and cost The demand for healthcare is rising. The burden of disease is increasing. The population is ageing. We face the threat of emerging infectious diseases. We are struggling with health disparities.1 At the same time, all nations are facing the challenges in providing access, cost and quality healthcare.2 We are here today to talk about cost and to debate the various ways in which innovation may lead to an increase or a reduction of cost. Indeed, healthcare costs are extremely high and there is much concern about whether recent trends are sustainable. For instance, healthcare spending accounts for 19% of gross domestic product (GDP) in the USA and it is expected to grow another 4% this coming year. This is the basis for our debate. ### Drugs, medical devices and hospital care A JAMA study in November 2013 noted that 91% of increased healthcare costs between 2000 and 2011 were because of the increase in the price of drugs, medical devices and hospital care.3 It is argued by industry that to develop novel breakthrough therapies, they must invest in innovation which is risky and costly. By charging for these new therapies, industry can recover the losses related to high-risk research and development. In essence, industry needs to be incentivised and reimbursed for the dollars they put in the innovation, which often includes patents and other costs to protect the innovation. The article discusses the issuance programs of several major auto ABS issuers and examines recent performance issues in the sector. It also explores key regulatory developments, such as SEC Regulation AB II and discusses the issue of whether there is a bubble in the subprime auto sector.

Smartphone apps are becoming ubiquitous in our everyday life. Apps on smartphones sense users' behaviors and activities, providing a lens for understanding users, which is an important point in the community of ubiquitous computing. In UbiComp 2018, we successfully held the first International workshop AppLens 2018: mining and learning from smartphone apps for users. In UbiComp 2019, we would like to run the second International workshop AppLens 2019. It seeks for participants interested in characterizing users from their use of smartphone apps, discovering cultural and social phenomenon by analyzing app usage, recognizing app usage behaviors, studying smartphone apps, user privacy issues, etc. In order to attract more participants, we will open two app datasets. This workshop will include paper sessions, invited talks, and a panel session, to provide a forum for the participants to communicate and discuss issues to promote the emerging research field. Moreover, we will select a few accepted papers to be extended and published in a prestigious journal special issue.

An Interagency Panel Session organized by the NASA Human Research Program Space Radiation Program Element (SRPE) was held during the NASA Human Research Program (HRP) Investigator’s Workshop (IWS) in Galveston, Texas on January 26, 2017 to identify complementary research areas that will advance the testing and development of medical countermeasures (MCM) in support of radioprotection and radiation mitigation on the ground and in space. There were several areas of common interest identified among the various participating agencies. This report provides a summary of the topics discussed by each agency along with potential areas of intersection for mutual collaboration opportunities. Common goals included repurposing of pharmaceuticals, neutraceuticals for use as radioprotectors and/or mitigators, low-dose/chronic exposure paradigms, late effects post-radiation exposure, mixed-field exposures of gamma-neutron, performance decrements, and methods to determine individual exposure levels.

Exploratory research in learning analytics and other algorithmic approaches to improving learning can lead to powerful findings that have the potential to improve STEM learning and teaching for a broad audience of students, faculty, and institutions. However, this promise of large-scale impact is rarely achieved in practice.
