The proliferation of FinTech apps has democratized access to financial services, empowering individuals and businesses to take greater control of their finances. These apps have catalyzed financial innovation, disrupted traditional business models, and fostered competition in the financial industry. Moreover, FinTech apps have the potential to drive economic growth, promote financial literacy, and advance financial inclusion on a global scale. FinTech applications have played an important role in the creation of an arena where information is collected, stored, and processed to make the best decisions of investment. This has boosted the investment and increased the activity in capital markets when considered from the investors’ point of view. Capital markets have always been an important place for investors to invest in long-term securities with a maturity of more than one year. Primary as well as secondary markets are part of it. People invest in securities expecting a return in the form of capital gains and/or income. The role of FinTech applications in facilitating various investment decisions has also opened doors to retail investors in capital markets. Traditionally, retail investors have been overlooked because they are perceived not to have enough capital to invest, be too risk-averse, and be too costly to service. Both quantitative and qualitative data have been used. 150 online surveys were used to gather primary data. The outcome from this study showed a major shift in stock market investors towards digital connection due to various reasons. Some cultural and behavioral effects have been found among the investors for the financial transactions.

Abstract Background Staphylococcus aureus, a Gram-positive bacterium, poses a significant threat to public health and food safety due to its virulence and its ability to develop antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Moreover, S. aureus can form biofilms in food environments, making it difficult to eradicate and pose a major challenge in foodborne illness prevention. Methods The study aimed to investigate the biofilm-forming capabilities and AMR profiles of 107 S. aureus isolates derived from milk, chicken meat, and chicken eggs. Further, the study compared the biofilm formation tendencies between multi-drug resistant (MDR) and non-MDR S. aureus isolates. Additionally, the research explored the antibacterial and anti-biofilm properties of Lactobacillus rhamnosus and Lactobacillus casei, focusing on their aggregation and co-aggregation effects with S. aureus. Results Around 70.10% of S. aureus isolates were found to be resistant to at least three antibiotic classes. The biofilm assay revealed that 16.82% isolates were strong biofilm formers. The MDR isolates displayed a strong biofilm-forming ability (i.e., 18.67%) and a higher prevalence of biofilm-associated genes [i.e., icaA (53.33%) and icaD (44.0%)] compared to non-MDR isolates. The LAB strain, L. rhamnosus exhibited a 29.06 mm mean antibacterial inhibition zone, an average reduction of 48.19% in biofilm growth, 55.46% auto-aggregation, and 40.61% co-aggregation with S. aureus. Similarly, L. casei demonstrated a 21.80 mm mean antibacterial inhibition zone, an average reduction of 31.56% in biofilm growth, 45.23% auto-aggregation, and 36.81% co-aggregation with S. aureus isolates. Conclusion This study provides valuable insights into the biofilm formation of MDR S. aureus and underscores the potential of L. rhamnosus and L. casei as bio-control agents. These findings highlight the necessity for additional research into the mechanisms through which LAB strains inhibit pathogenic biofilms and their potential applications in enhancing food safety.

Abstract Background To overcome the problem of side effects and toxicity, development of new anticancer agents is needed. Recently, piperidine salicylanilide derivatives with nanomolar epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) inhibitory and cytotoxicity activity have been reported. In the present study effect of replacing piperidine in reported piperidine salicylanilide with N-methyl piperazine and changing substituent’s of phenyl ring at other end on anticancer activity have been explored. A series of sixteen methyl piperazine incorporated phenyl benzamide and phenyl methanone derivatives have been synthesized and tested in a panel of three cancer cell lines (adenocarcinomic human alveolar basal epithelial cells (A-549), human colon carcinoma (HCT-116) and human pancreatic carcinoma (MIAPaCa-2)), using gefitinib as standard. Further, to study the probable mechanism, due to their structural similarity with EGFR inhibitors, docking interactions with EGFR active site were observed using Schrodinger suite. Result The results indicated that most of the compounds showed promising activity; out of which, compound A-11 was most active having cytotoxicity much better than that of gefitinib. It showed IC50 value of 5.71 µM against A-549 cell line, 4.26 µM against HCT-116 colon cancer line and 31.36 µM against MIAPaCa-2 cell line. Conclusion It was found that these compounds fit well in the active site and may be exhibiting anticancer activity via EGFR inhibition. Graphical Abstract

Abstract Rice blast disease is the most devastating disease constraining crop productivity. Vertical resistance to blast disease is widely studied despite its instability. Clusters of genes or QTLs conferring blast resistance that offer durable horizontal resistance are important in resistance breeding. In this study, we aimed to refine the reported QTLs and identify stable meta-QTLs (MQTLs) associated with rice blast resistance. A total of 435 QTLs were used to project 71 MQTLs across all the rice chromosomes. As many as 199 putative rice blast resistance genes were identified within 53 MQTL regions. The genes included 48 characterized resistance gene analogs and related proteins, such as NBS–LRR type, LRR receptor-like kinase, NB-ARC domain, pathogenesis-related TF/ERF domain, elicitor-induced defense and proteins involved in defense signaling. MQTL regions with clusters of RGA were also identified. Fifteen highly significant MQTLs included 29 candidate genes and genes characterized for blast resistance, such as Piz, Nbs-Pi9, pi55-1, pi55-2, Pi3/Pi5-1, Pi3/Pi5-2, Pikh, Pi54, Pik/Pikm/Pikp, Pb1 and Pb2. Furthermore, the candidate genes (42) were associated with differential expression (in silico) in compatible and incompatible reactions upon disease infection. Moreover, nearly half of the genes within the MQTL regions were orthologous to those in O. sativa indica, Z. mays and A. thaliana, which confirmed their significance. The peak markers within three significant MQTLs differentiated blast-resistant and susceptible lines and serve as potential surrogates for the selection of blast-resistant lines. These MQTLs are potential candidates for durable and broad-spectrum rice blast resistance and could be utilized in blast resistance breeding.

Abstract Background Cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) in the four-chamber plane offers comprehensive insight into the volumetrics of the heart. We aimed to develop an artificial intelligence (AI) model of time-resolved segmentation using the four-chamber cine. Methods A fully automated deep learning algorithm was trained using retrospective multicentre and multivendor data of 814 subjects. Validation, reproducibility, and mortality prediction were evaluated on an independent cohort of 101 subjects. Results The mean age of the validation cohort was 54 years, and 66 (65%) were males. Left and right heart parameters demonstrated strong correlations between automated and manual analysis, with a ρ of 0.91−0.98 and 0.89−0.98, respectively, with minimal bias. All AI four-chamber volumetrics in repeatability analysis demonstrated high correlation (ρ = 0.99−1.00) and no bias. Automated four-chamber analysis underestimated both left ventricular (LV) and right ventricular (RV) volumes compared to ground-truth short-axis cine analysis. Two correction factors for LV and RV four-chamber analysis were proposed based on systematic bias. After applying the correction factors, a strong correlation and minimal bias for LV volumetrics were observed. During a mean follow-up period of 6.75 years, 16 patients died. Abstract Copper-zinc-tin Cu2ZnSn (CZT) thin films are promising materials for solar cell applications. This thin film was deposited on a fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) using an electrochemical deposition hierarchy. X-ray diffraction of thin-film studies confirms the variation in the structural orientation of CZT on the FTO surface. As the pH of the solution is increased, the nature of the CZT thin-film aggregate changes from a fern-like leaf CZT dendrite crystal to a disk pattern. The FE-SEM surface micrograph shows the dendrite fern leaf and sharp edge disks. The 2-D diffusion limitation aggregation under slippery conditions for ternary thin films was performed for the first time. The simulation showed that by changing the diffusing species, the sticking probability was responsible for the pH-dependent morphological change. Convincingly, diffusion-limited aggregation (DLA) simulations confirm that the initial structure of copper is responsible for the final structure of the CZT thin films. An experimental simulation with pH as a controlled parameter revealed phase transition in CZT thin films. The top and back contact of Ag-CZT thin films based on Schottky behavior give a better electronic mechanism in superstrate and substrate solar cells.

Abstract The gravito-electrostatic sheath (GES) model, exploring the solar wind plasma (SWP) origin from the solar interior plasma (SIP) via the solar surface boundary (SSB), is revaluated by including realistic negative ionic species. A constructive numerical analysis of the structuring equations shows that the SIP volume shrinks with an increase in the negative ion concentration. This shrinking nature is independent of ion mass and plasma temperature. The electric potential is insensitive to the negative ion concentration, mass, and plasma temperature. The solar plasma flow dynamics is studied with the Mach number and current density profiles. The sonic transition of the SWP depends on the T i /T e -ratio. The current density responds to the negative ion density and T i /T e −ratio in both the SIP and SWP. A deviation from the local quasi-neutrality state is observed in the SIP. The GES model equations result in a modified GES-Bohm sheath criterion in a well justifiable and validated form. The obtained results are then compared with the various observed outcomes and previous GES-based predictions. The relevance of this multi-parametric solar plasma analysis is lastly emphasized on the basis of the current solar research progressions.

Abstract Background Plastic is widely utilized in packaging, frameworks, and as coverings material. Its overconsumption and slow degradation, pose threats to ecosystems due to its toxic effects. While polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) offer a sustainable alternative to petroleum-based plastics, their production costs present significant obstacles to global adoption. On the other side, a multitude of household and industrial activities generate substantial volumes of wastewater containing both organic and inorganic contaminants. This not only poses a threat to ecosystems but also presents opportunities to get benefits from the circular economy. Main body of abstract Production of bioplastics may be improved by using the nutrients and minerals in wastewater as a feedstock for microbial fermentation. Strategies like feast-famine culture, mixed-consortia culture, and integrated processes have been developed for PHA production from highly polluted wastewater with high organic loads. Various process parameters like organic loading rate, organic content (volatile fatty acids), dissolved oxygen, operating pH, and temperature also have critical roles in PHA accumulation in microbial biomass. Research advances are also going on in downstream and recovery of PHA utilizing a combination of physical and chemical (halogenated solvents, surfactants, green solvents) methods. This review highlights recent developments in upcycling wastewater resources into PHA, encompassing various production strategies, downstream processing methodologies, and techno-economic analyses. Short conclusion Organic carbon and nitrogen present in wastewater offer a promising, cost-effective source for producing bioplastic. Previous attempts have focused on enhancing productivity through optimizing culture systems and growth conditions. However, despite technological progress, significant challenges persist, such as low productivity, intricate downstream processing, scalability issues, and the properties of resulting PHA. In the present work, the Inconel 625 material is utilized for processing on a wire electrical discharge machine. The zinc-coated brass wire is used as a tool electrode. The Taguchi mixed orthogonal L27 experimental design is developed to perform the experiments. The parameter was induced on normal and cryogenic material such as pulse on time (Ton), pulse off time (Toff), discharge current (Ip), wire feed (Wf), and wire tension (WT). The characteristics responses i.e., material removal rate (MRR), surface roughness (Ra), and overcut (OC) were analyzed. The genetic algorithm (GA) was applied for the evaluation and measuring of fact, which determined its performance, and predicted facts were considered for particle swarm optimization (PSO) technique multiple objective problems. After the comparison, the facts predicted were analyzed for the response, which revealed the surface integrity and accuracy on the machined surface. The solution implied that applied PSO gives highly significant results on optimal setting parameters of WEDM machining. The 0.419 μm surface roughness has been obtained by a cryogenic process as compared to normal (0.880 μm). The material removal rate for the cryogenic process was found to have decreased in PSO by 21.18 % and in GA by 2.78 % in comparison to the normal process. The obtained results give the utmost measure for the suitability of time reduction and cost-cutting in productivity rate.

Objectives The aim of this study was to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of secondary interval AngioJet rheolytic thrombectomy after localized intra-arterial catheter-directed thrombolysis (CDT) through power-pulse spray (PPS) technique in partially successful or failed primary AngioJet rheolytic thrombectomy cases of acute and subacute peripheral artery thrombosis.

Background The role of dual-modality drainage of walled-off necrosis (WON) in patients with acute pancreatitis (AP) is established. However, there are no data on the association of clinical outcomes with the timing of percutaneous catheter drainage (PCD). We investigated the impact of the timing of PCD following endoscopic drainage of WON on clinical outcomes in AP.

Context: The Chandigarh Noncommunicable Disease (NCD) Registry was set up in 2018 to assess the burden of major NCDs and inform the planning of public health and clinical interventions. Aim: The aim of the present study was to assess the burden of NCDs in Chandigarh. Settings and Design: The cross-sectional study design includes data from government and private facilities, pathology laboratories, birth, and death registrar offices catering to urban and rural Chandigarh. Subjects and Methods: It collects data of young diabetes, stroke, acute cardiac events, aplastic anemia, and cancer patients using a structured questionnaire. Statistical Analysis Used: The study reports a descriptive analysis of case distribution, done using SPSS version 23. MS Excel 2016 was used to produce graphical illustrations and calculate age-adjusted rates using the world standard population. Results: During July 2018–December 2019, 3721 (incident and death) cases were recorded for cancer (n = 2414, 64.9%), acute cardiac events (n = 1034, 27.8%), stroke (n = 231, 6.2%), young diabetes (n = 28, 0.8%), and aplastic anemia (n = 14, 0.4%). The age-adjusted incidence and mortality rates (per 100,000 population) were calculated for cancer (males: 102.6 and 62.0; females: 100.8 and 52.9), acute cardiac events (males: 47.1; females: 21.7 and 28.8), and stroke (males: 7.5 and 8.5; females: 13.1 and 21.8). Study participants were exposed to tobacco and alcohol consumption. Positive family history was reported by 40% of the registered patients. Conclusions: An integrated model of the NCD registry is feasible and can yield evidence in low-resource settings for secondary prevention to achieve global targets for reducing risk factors and premature mortality due to NCDs.

Background: Substance use disorders (SUDs) are among the leading causes of morbidity in the population. In low- and medium-income countries like India, there is a wide treatment gap for SUD. A multicentric study on the care pathways for SUD in India can help to understand service provision, service utilization, and challenges to improve existing SUD care in India. Aim: We aimed to map pathways to care in SUD. We compared the clinical and demographic characteristics of patients who first consulted specialized services versus other medical services. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study of consecutive, consenting adults (18–65 years) with SUD registered to each of the nine participating addiction treatment services distributed across five Indian regions. We adapted the World Health Organization’s pathway encounter form. Results: Of the 998 participants, 98% were males, 49.4% were rural, and 20% were indigenous population. Addiction services dominated initial (50%) and subsequent (60%) healthcare contacts. One in five contacted private for-profit healthcare. Primary care contact was rare (5/998). Diverse approaches included traditional healers (4–6%) and self-medication (2–8%). There was a 3-year delay in first contact; younger, educated individuals with opioid dependence preferred specialized services. Conclusion: There is a need to strengthen public healthcare infrastructure and delivery systems and integrate SUD treatment into public healthcare.

Catechins are the predominant form of flavonoids present in plants and have high antioxidant capacity, but their usage is limited in clinical practice due to low bioavailability. Nano formulation of catechin was prepared by using sodium alginate polymer to address the bioavailability problem. Nanoparticles were synthesized by the co-precipitation method. In vivo antioxidant property of alginate-coated catechin nanoparticles was assessed against carbon tetrachloride-induced hepatopathy in a rat model. Rats were randomly divided into ten groups, with six rats (n = 6) in each group. Carbon tetrachloride @ 4 ml/Kg body weight was used to cause subacute hepatotoxicity in rats; Group I (healthy control), Group II (disease control), Group III (blank catechin), Group IV (blank alginate), Group V (Silymarin), Group VI and Group VII (Alginate coated catechin nanoparticles, two different dose intervals), Group VIII, Group IX, Group X (Alginate coated catechin nanoparticles, Three different doses). Oxidative stress assay, histopathological examination, and May-Grünwald staining were done on the 28th day of the trial. Haemato-biochemical parameters and oxidative stress markers on the 28th day in the rats of Group VI showed significant improvement as compared to other groups. Significant improvement in the healing pattern of gross tissues of the liver was observed in Group VI. May-Grünwald Giemsa staining depicted prominent regenerative changes in liver cells in Group VI. The study concluded that the alginate coating of catechin improves the bioavailability and depicted better regeneration of hepatocytes.

The corrosion behaviour of a thermo-mechanically treated Beta C titanium alloy in a 3.5 wt% NaCl solution was investigated in this study. Thermomechanical processing prejudges titanium alloys to improve corrosion properties. Scanning electron microscopy and electron-backscattered diffractions were used to investigate the microstructural evolution and grain orientation after thermo-mechanical processing. The electrochemical characteristics of Beta C titanium alloy were examined using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), corrosion potential, and corrosion current density measurements. The 45 percent deformed specimen experiences significant plastic deformation with increased dislocation density, resulting in strong ND // orientation. However, the annealing after deformation exhibits a strong g-fiber texture with the lowest in-grain misorientation, which contributes to improving the corrosion resistance of the titanium alloy.

Watermelon is a widely cultivated cucurbitaceous crop with economic and dietary significance. The plant's ability to reproduce effectively relies on the harmonious growth and maturation of both its male and female flowers. At the farm level, determining the exact amount of ethylene required to regulate the development and sexual expression of individual floral buds remains uncertain, despite the known influence of exogenously applied ethylene on these processes. The goal of the research was to explore how the ethephon doses influence vegetative characteristics, sex expression, and watermelon yield. The experiment, employing a one-factorial Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) comprising five treatments and four replications, was conducted in a farmer's field in Buttabari, Jhapa. Using R-stat software, the data were analyzed at a 5% level of significance. Treatment consisted of Ethephon with four doses namely; 100ppm, 200ppm, 300ppm, 400ppm, and a control. Ethephon application was done twice, once at the two true-leaf stages and another at four true-leaf stages. The study revealed that plant height decreased with ethephon compared to the control, reaching a minimum of 280.1 cm at 400 ppm and a maximum of 307.1 cm in the control. Additionally, the highest branch numbers were observed with ethephon at 200 ppm. The plot treated with 200ppm ethephon was found to be more effective than alternative doses at increasing the total number of female flowers, bearing 15.25 female flowers per plant. Control (166.50 per plant) and 400 ppm (150.00 per plant) had the highest and lowest male flower counts per plant, respectively. A maximum yield of 25.12 t/ha and a minimum yield of 19.1 t/ha were determined at 200 ppm and control, respectively. Hence, farmers are found to benefit from ethephon doses of 200 ppm.

Abstract Background Pulmonary transit time (PTT) can be measured automatically from arterial input function (AIF) images of dual sequence first-pass perfusion imaging. PTT has been validated against invasive cardiac catheterisation correlating with both cardiac output and left ventricular filling pressure (both important prognostic markers in heart failure). We hypothesized that prolonged PTT is associated with clinical outcomes in patients with heart failure. Abstract Whether the Main Himalayan Thrust can host a single surface-rupturing event in the Himalaya with a rupture length of > 700 km remains controversial. Previous paleoseismological studies in the Darjeeling-Sikkim Himalaya (DSH) suggested medieval surface-rupturing earthquakes, correlating them with the eleventh–thirteenth century events from Nepal and Bhutan and extending the coseismic rupture length > 700 km. Conversely, there is no rupture evidence of the 1714 Bhutan and 1934 Bihar–Nepal earthquakes in the DSH, resulting in a discrepancy in the rupture extent of the great earthquakes. Consequently, we conducted a paleoseismological investigation across a ~ 10 m-high fault scarp on the Himalayan Frontal Thrust at Chenga village, DSH, revealing a surface-faulting event during 1313–395 BCE. We suggest that the DSH is a 150 km-long independent segment bounded by a transverse ridge and fault and has a recurrence interval of ~ 949–1963 years, which is significantly larger than Nepal (~ 700–900 years) and Bhutan Himalaya (~ 339–761 years).

Abstract Heat shuttling phenomenon is characterized by the presence of a non-zero heat flow between two bodies without net thermal bias on average. It was initially predicted in the context of nonlinear heat conduction within atomic lattices coupled to two time-oscillating thermostats. Recent theoretical works revealed an analog of this effect for heat exchanges mediated by thermal photons between two solids having a temperature dependent emissivity. In this paper, we present the experimental proof of this effect using systems made with composite materials based on phase change materials. By periodically modulating the temperature of one of two solids we report that the system akin to heat pumping with a controllable heat flow direction. Additionally, we demonstrate the effectiveness of a simultaneous modulation of two temperatures to control both the strength and direction of heat shuttling by exploiting the phase delay between these temperatures. These results show that this effect is promising for an active thermal management of solid-state technology, to cool down solids, to insulate them from their background or to amplify heat exchanges.

In the United States, there is a high prevalence of diet-related diseases in low-income communities that lack access to fresh produce. Greater access to local farmers’ markets may affect individual and household intake of fruits and vegetables. However, barriers to farmers’ market access remain. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the differences between participants in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) who regularly shop at farmers’ markets and those who do not. We found that regular farmers’ market shoppers tended to consume on average more fruits and vegetables than WIC participants who did not regularly shop at farmers’ markets. Differences in the importance of various store or market characteristics, barriers to fruit and vegetable consumption, and fruit and vegetable procurement methods were also found.

Abstract Tuberculosis (TB) treatment is more challenging for patients with silicosis, as it complicates the diagnosis of both diseases and increases mortality risk. Silicosis, an incurable occupational disease, confounds the diagnosis of TB and vice versa, making it more difficult to accurately identify and treat either condition. Moreover, TB appears to accelerate the progression of silicosis. Exposure to silica dust, a common cause of silicosis, can also trigger latent TB to become active TB. This correspondence outlines a proposed framework for implementing collaborative TB-silicosis activities in India, aimed at improving early diagnosis and management for both diseases. An expert panel of medical professionals developed this framework through online consultations in October and November 2022. The panel's goal was to establish a consensus on integrating TB-silicosis activities, with a focus on early detection and proper management. The framework suggests testing all patients with silicosis for active TB and screening workers exposed to silica dust for latent TB infection. It also recommends that patients with TB who have a history of occupational exposure to silica dust should be tested for silicosis. Reliable diagnostic tools, such as chest X-rays, are emphasized, providing guidance on their use for both diseases. The proposed collaborative TB-silicosis framework offers a structured approach to identifying and managing these two diseases, contributing to the global goal of eliminating silicosis by 2030 and aligning with the World Health Organization’s targets for reducing TB incidence and mortality. It recommends specific strategies for implementation, including testing, referral systems, and workplace-based interventions. The framework also underscores the need for coordinated efforts among stakeholders, including the ministries of health, labor, industry, and environment. This correspondence provides valuable insights into how India can successfully implement collaborative TB-silicosis activities, serving as a model for other regions with similar challenges.

Abstract Background Alzheimer's disease (AD) is marked by cognitive decline along with the presence of mental symptoms, most notably psychosis. Although antipsychotic drugs are commonly recommended to treat these symptoms, there is ongoing discussion on the safety and effectiveness of these drugs in AD patients. The therapeutic management of Alzheimer’s disease-related psychosis (ARP) is hampered by its limited therapy options, determining the precise brain regions in Alzheimer’s patients with understanding of the neurological substrates implicated in ARP. While new therapies including brexpiprazole and atypical antipsychotics present promising therapeutic choices, practical implementation and potential upcoming therapies approaches is discussed along with mechanism-based understanding of different neurotransmitters with pharmaceutical therapies. Our objective is to contribute to more efficient and individualized treatment approaches by offering a thorough resource for medical professionals and researchers working in the field of managing and researching psychosis associated with AD. Results The examination containing new data supporting newer therapeutic approaches that target receptors and providing better safety and effectiveness characteristics. This study point out gaps in our existing understanding and make recommendations for future research, emphasizing the necessity of clinical trials created especially for psychotic Alzheimer’s patients. Secondly, the neurochemical and neuropathological bases of ARP, with a focus on changes in the dopamine, serotonin, and glutamate systems of neurotransmitters are also described in detail. Different pharmacodynamics antipsychotic medications are covered in later sections of this paper, with an emphasis on how these medications' interactions with certain neurotransmitter receptors may affect their therapeutic efficacy and side-effects profile. Conclusion The review article summarizes the most recent findings regarding the contribution of neurotransmitter receptors to the effectiveness of antipsychotic drugs in the management of ADP. We provide a thorough overview of second-generation (atypical) antipsychotics, emphasizing how their unique affinity for neurotransmitter receptors influences their clinical application in psychosis associated with AD. The difficulties of treating Alzheimer’s with antipsychotics are also covered in this study, including the potential for cognitive impairment to worsen, the emergence of extrapyramidal symptoms, and other unfavorable effects. New approaches to studying and treating ARP including neuroinflammation-targeting medicines, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers, and muscarinic acetylcholine receptor (mAChR) agonists like xanomeline. Reducing psychosis through treatment options could be improved by knowledge of N-methyl-D-aspartate glutamate receptors (NMDAR) hypofunction processes in gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABAergic) neurons.

Abstract The present work describes the development of TiO2/SeO2 nanostructure as a potential candidate for visible light photocatalysis as well as selective fluorophore for the sensing of picric acid. The obtained nanostructure consists of uniform globular nanoparticles having approximate size of 170 nm and possess an optical band gap of 2.33 eV with absorption maxima at 473 nm. The photocatalyst was able to achieve 90.34% degradation efficiency for 2, 4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) with rate constant of 0.0046 min−1 in the visible region. Further the nanostructure was able to serve as a selective fluorophore for sensing of Picric acid portraying more than 95% of fluorescence quenching when the concentration of PA is 10–4 M. Theoretical calculations indicate the interaction of organic pollutants with the nanostructure and reveal that both picric acid (− 66.21 kcal/mol) and 2,4-DCP (− 12.31 kcal/mol) possess more negative binding energy values demonstrating a strong interaction of both with the nanostructure, making it suitable for the degradation as well as sensing of organic pollutants. Thus this study explains the potential of prepared catalyst for waste water treatment.

Abstract This study addresses the vital role of engine dampers in reducing vibrations and enhancing ride comfort in quad bikes. Utilizing ANSYS modal analysis and CATIA V5 design, the research aims to optimize damper design by assessing natural frequencies and potential resonance in the cage structure and engine. Through extensive analysis, the study evaluates vibrations transmitted from the engine to the chassis, crucial for understanding and improving overall vehicle performance. Neoprene rubber emerges as the optimal material for vibration dampers, offering superior density, elasticity, stiffness, and damping coefficient. Comparative analysis reveals that Design 3 of the dampers significantly outperforms Design 2 and Design 1, showcasing a remarkable 62% reduction in vibration. However, the study underscores the influence of various factors, such as application specificity and vibration characteristics, on damper effectiveness. Thus, while Design 3 may excel under certain conditions, careful consideration of diverse a variable is essential for optimal damper selection and performance across different engine types and operational contexts.

Abstract Background The majority of persons with dementia in Sweden reside in their own homes with support from family members. Approximately, 12% of persons with dementia have immigrant background. Within the next 20 years, the number of persons with dementia who are non-ethnic Swedes is said to double. Family caregivers with immigrant backgrounds are noted to receive less support in the community than ethnic Swedes and rate their health status lower than ethnic Swedish peers. The Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare have highlighted the importance of follow-up support for family caregivers with immigrant backgrounds as there is a recognized gap in research and available information tailored to meet the needs of this group. Purpose of the study The purpose of the study is to test effectiveness of an mHealth based intervention through which community social workers can improve caregiving competence of non-European immigrant family caregivers of people with dementia living at home in Sweden. The overarching aim is to reduce caregiver burden and depressive symptoms, and improve quality of life. Methods A randomized controlled trial (RCT) including wait list control group will be performed consisting of an intervention group (A, n = 44) and a wait list control group (B, n = 44), totaling a sample size of 88. On completion of the 10-weeks long intervention in the intervention group, the intervention will be delivered to group B. Effect of the intervention will be analyzed between and within groups over time. The content of the educational component of the intervention is inspired by the iSupport manual developed by the World Health Organization. The contents, in the form of a booklet, aims to equip the family caregivers with structured information on understanding dementia as a condition and its management at home, including self-care guidance designed specifically for family caregivers themselves. Discussion Similar telephone-delivered intervention studies targeted for family caregivers to persons with dementia are ongoing in Malaysia and will start in India using the same booklet adapted to the local context. These studies will provide evidence on the effectiveness of using digital technologies to deliver support to those who may not be reached or adequately served by the traditional healthcare system. Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is a major health care associated infection which usually emanates from aspiration, immigration of pathogens from aerodigestive tract, adulterated appliance uses or medications. The mortality rate due to VAP is approximately 13% and the causative organisms are bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Many studies have investigated the causative organisms as Pseudomonas spp., Acinetobacter spp., Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Staphylococcus aureus with varying prevalence. Intensive Care Unit (ICU) admitted patients who are ventilated, are more prone to the infections where the pathogens adhere to the mucosa of lower respiratory tract of mechanically ventilated patients and start infections. Clinical diagnosis based on Clinical Pulmonary Infection Score (CPIS) has poor specificity and microbiological findings takes 48-72 hrs, that can delay the treatment of patients. Lymphopenia on complete blood count is a predictor of mortality in VAP patients, but decreased lymphocyte count occurs in various other infections too. Multiplex PCR is a better diagnostic technique for VAP which can even diagnose atypical bacteria along with other etiological agents. Effectively employing sampling techniques is a vital step in the diagnosis of VAP, enabling the identification of pathogens responsible for lung infections. Furthermore, the emergence of novel therapeutic options approved by regulatory bodies, adds significant advancements in VAP treatment. In this review article, we have performed an in-depth study on the pathogenesis, diagnosis and therapeutic strategies involved in VAP. This study will help the researchers working in this area to design their work appropriately with the updated knowledge on VAP.

Tremendous increase in anthropogenic activities and natural disasters have created long term negative impacts to the crop productivity as well as on our ecosystem. In the debate regarding the ongoing ecosystem fluctuations, there is a need to explore an efficient, cost-effective, target-oriented and less manpower-based technologies for sustainable development. Microbial engineering provides a better solution for the growth of a healthy environment and higher agricultural productivity over the existing methods and resolved the challenges worldwide related to development of sustainable agriculture and greener ecosystems. In recent years, researchers are working on the development of different advanced microbial engineering strategies such as gene editing, CRISPR/Cas9, and RNAi to enhance the potential of microorganisms towards higher plant productivity and degradation of pollutants. The present review focused on the potential applications of genetically engineered microbial inoculants for sustainable agriculture and greener ecosystem development.

Avascular Necrosis (AVN) is a pathological condition characterised by a reduction in the blood supply to the subchondral bone, leading to the degenerative condition of the bone, marked by the death of cellular components of the bone. It is also known as osteonecrosis. The epiphysis of long bones at weight-bearing joints is typically affected. All of these conditions have a poor prognosis. In Ayurveda, it corresponds to Asthivahastrotodushtivikara (musculoskeletal disorder) as there is kshaya (necrosis) of asthi (bone) and Majja (bone marrow) dhatu (major structural components of the body). In modern medicine, AVN is managed by the use of corticosteroids and many surgical procedures such as drilling, insertion of prosthetics, or bone grafts. Therefore, Ayurveda provides a conservative line of treatment based on the principle of Asthi-majjagatkashaya (decalcification of bone) caused by abhighatajanyavataprakopa (trauma). A case of AVN with the right femoral head was treated with shaman (oral medications), Sodhana (bio-purification), and bruhmana (rejuvenation) procedures. The therapy provided significant improvements in pain and range of movement of the hip joint, based on the patient’s signs and symptoms before and after treatment. Conservative treatment can give outstanding results, improve the quality of life, halt disease progression, and help manage AVN by tissue regeneration without harmful effects.

Abstract Background Plant-parasitic root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne incognita) causes global yield loss in agri- and horticultural crops. Nematode management options rely on chemical method. However, only a handful of nematicides are commercially available. Resistance breeding efforts are not sustainable because R gene sources are limited and nematodes have developed resistance-breaking populations against the commercially available Mi-1.2 gene-expressing tomatoes. RNAi crops that manage nematode infection are yet to be commercialized because of the regulatory hurdles associated with transgenic crops. The deployment of the CRISPR/Cas9 system to improve nematode tolerance (by knocking out the susceptibility factors) in plants has emerged as a feasible alternative lately. Results In the present study, a M. incognita-responsive susceptibility (S) gene, amino acid permease (AAP6), was characterized from the model plant Arabidodpsis thaliana by generating the AtAAP6 overexpression line, followed by performing the GUS reporter assay by fusing the promoter of AtAAP6 with the β-glucuronidase (GUS) gene. Upon challenge inoculation with M. incognita, overexpression lines supported greater nematode multiplication, and AtAAP6 expression was inducible to the early stage of nematode infection. Next, using CRISPR/Cas9, AtAAP6 was selectively knocked out without incurring any growth penalty in the host plant. The ‘Cas9-free’ homozygous T3 line was challenge inoculated with M. incognita, and CRISPR-edited A. thaliana plants exhibited considerably reduced susceptibility to nematode infection compared to the non-edited plants. Additionally, host defense response genes were unaltered between edited and non-edited plants, implicating the direct role of AtAAP6 towards nematode susceptibility. Conclusion The present findings enrich the existing literature on CRISPR/Cas9 research in plant-nematode interactions, which is quite limited currently while compared with the other plant-pathogen interaction systems.

Abstract Crohn’s disease is an inflammatory condition of the intestine characterized by largely unknown etiology and a relapse remission cycle of disease control. While possible triggers have been identified, research is inconsistent on the precise cause of these relapses, especially in the under-researched pediatric population. We hypothesized that patients in remission would have persistent microbial and inflammatory changes in small intestinal tissue that might trigger relapse. To this end, we analyzed intestinal biopsy samples from six patients with pediatric Crohn’s disease in remission and a control group of 16 pediatric patients with no evident pathogenic abnormality. We identified compositional microbiota differences, including decreases in the genera Streptococcus and Actinobacillus as well as increases in Oribacterium and Prevotella in patients with controlled Crohn’s disease compared to controls. Further, a histologic analysis found that patients with controlled Crohn’s disease had increased epithelial integrity, and decreased intraepithelial lymphocytes compared with controls. Additionally, we observed increased peripheral CD4+ T cells in patients with pediatric Crohn’s disease. These results indicate that markers of intestinal inflammation are responsive to Crohn’s disease treatment, however the interventions may not resolve the underlying dysbiosis. These findings suggest that persistent dysbiosis may increase vulnerability to relapse of pediatric Crohn’s disease. Abstract Background Autosomal‐recessive mutations in SPEG (striated muscle preferentially expressed protein kinase) have been linked to centronuclear myopathy with or without dilated cardiomyopathy (CNM5). Loss of SPEG is associated with defective triad formation, abnormal excitation–contraction coupling, calcium mishandling and disruption of the focal adhesion complex in skeletal muscles. To elucidate the underlying molecular pathways, we have utilized multi‐omics tools and analysis to obtain a comprehensive view of the complex biological processes and molecular functions. Methods Skeletal muscles from 2‐month‐old SPEG‐deficient (Speg‐CKO) and wild‐type (WT) mice were used for RNA sequencing (n = 4 per genotype) to profile transcriptomics and mass spectrometry (n = 4 for WT; n = 3 for Speg‐CKO mice) to profile proteomics and phosphoproteomics. In addition, interactomics was performed using the SPEG antibody on pooled muscle lysates (quadriceps, gastrocnemius and triceps) from WT and Speg‐CKO mice. Based on the multi‐omics results, we performed quantitative real‐time PCR, co‐immunoprecipitation and immunoblot to verify the findings. Results We identified that SPEG interacts with myospryn complex proteins CMYA5, FSD2 and RyR1, which are critical for triad formation, and that SPEG deficiency results in myospryn complex abnormalities (protein levels decreased to 22 ± 3% for CMYA5 [P

The study explores the intricate interplay between land use land cover (LULC), normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), and land surface temperature (LST) within the Lower Son River Basin in India from 1991 to 2020. The region’s ecological balance has been increasingly strained due to rapid urbanization and changing land use patterns. Through a combination of Landsat TM & OLI/TIRS satellite imageries and geospatial analysis techniques, this study unveils the intricate connection between land use and land cover changes, vegetation, and land surface temperature variations. The study area is classified into three altitudinal zones (Zone I: 39–300 m, Zone II: 301–600 m and Zone III: 601–1,247 m) to examine the changes in depth. The area has seen significant changes in LULC, vegetation and LST in all the three altitudinal zones. The findings hold significant implications for sustainable land management and environmental conservation strategies in the Lower Son River Basin. As per the result, 103,438 ha of vegetation was converted into agriculture land and 82,572 ha of agricultural land was transformed into settlements from 1991 to 2020. This trend shows human pressure on the land resource in the study area. Minor increase in water body is seen which is attributed to commissioning of Bansagar dam. Zone I has seen highest settlement growth while Zone III experienced severe deforestation of around 15%. Zone II and III needs attention for holistic sustenance. Analysis of LST shows that it has increased by 0.82 °C from 1991 to 2020 which is a red flag. The study underscores the critical importance of balanced land use practices to preserve ecological integrity and mitigate the adverse effects of urbanization and climate change.

Introduction: Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) have many risk factors; few can be modified through health education. Traditional patient counselling methods fail to impact health behaviours to prevent or reduce the risk of CVDs. Objectives: This study was conducted to estimate the effect of various risk communication methods on CVD risk reduction and medication adherence. Design: An open-label superiority randomised control trial was conducted where 159 patients were randomised into three groups: Communication of 10-year Framingham CVD risk score, heart age, and routine care. Follow-up was done 3 months after recruitment. The primary outcome was a difference in excess 10-year Framingham CVD risk score in the end-line compared to baseline. The status of modifiable behavioural risk factors at baseline was expressed as ‘yes’ and ‘no’, and follow-up was defined as ‘action’, ‘positive maintenance’, ‘negative maintenance’, and ‘defaulter’. The trial was registered with the Clinical Trials Registry India (CTRI NO. CTRI/2020/10/028614). Setting: The study setting was screening outpatient department (OPD), General Medicine OPD, and Cardiology OPD of a tertiary care hospital in Central India. Participants: Participants aged >30 years, residing in Bhopal for more than 6 months, diagnosed with hypertension or diabetes mellitus or both, and having any of the four CVD behavioural risk factors: tobacco use, alcohol use, physical inactivity, or unhealthy diet. Results: Median excess 10-year Framingham CVD risk scores were 0.945% (CI: 1.275–4.297), –0.850% (–3.932–2.075), and –1.300% (–5.100–0.900) (10-year Framingham CVD risk score vs Heart age vs Routine care) and 0.000% (–3.125–5.925), –1.600% (–3.760–1.475), and –1.400% (–6.600–5.900) before and after intervention, respectively (P > 0.05). Positive maintenance was higher in both intervention groups concerning all modifiable behaviours, with a higher proportion reported in the 10-year Framingham risk score. The action phase was reported higher in intervention groups for medication adherence, addiction, and dietary changes. Conclusion: Systematic risk communication methods reduced the probability of contracting CVD in the future, though this finding was statistically insignificant.

Objective: The incidence of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) is rising rapidly worldwide. Some forms of CVD, such as stroke and heart attack, are more common among patients with certain conditions. Atherosclerosis development is a major factor underlying cardiovascular events, such as heart attack and stroke, and its early detection may prevent such events. Ultrasound imaging of carotid arteries is a useful method for diagnosis of atherosclerotic plaques; however, an automated method to classify atherosclerotic plaques for evaluation of early-stage CVD is needed. Here, we propose an automated method for classification of high-risk atherosclerotic plaque ultrasound images. Methods: Five deep learning (DL) models (VGG16, ResNet-50, GoogLeNet, XceptionNet, and SqueezeNet) were used for automated classification and the results compared with those of a machine learning (ML)-based technique, involving extraction of 23 texture features from ultrasound images and classification using a Support Vector Machine classifier. To enhance model interpretability, output gradient-weighted convolutional activation maps (GradCAMs) were generated and overlayed on original images. Results: A series of indices, including accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, F1-score, Cohen-kappa index, and area under the curve values, were calculated to evaluate model performance. GradCAM output images allowed visualization of the most significant ultrasound image regions. The GoogLeNet model yielded the highest accuracy (98.20%). Conclusion: ML models may be also suitable for applications requiring low computational resource. Further, DL models could be more completely automated than ML models.

This research investigates the potential of utilizing recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) and recycled sand (RS), derived from crushed concrete cubes, as sustainable alternatives in construction materials. The study comprehensively evaluates the properties of RCA and RS, focusing on workability, impact resistance, abrasion resistance, and compressive strength to determine their viability as substitute construction materials. A notable finding is RS’s enhanced fire and heat resistance when used as a fine aggregate in mortar blends, mixed with cement and Sinicon PP in a 3:1 ratio. The experimental analysis included thorough assessments of uniformity, durability, and curing time, alongside Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) for structural examination. Results show that RCA has an Aggregate Impact Value (AIV) of 5.76% and a Los Angeles Abrasion Value (LAA) of 21.78%, demonstrating excellent strength of the recycled aggregates. The mortar mix was also prepared using recycled sand, cement, and Sinicon PP, and its stability was confirmed through soundness tests, which resulted in a 0.53 mm expansion and a satisfactory consistency level of 44%. Ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) tests also indicated high-quality concrete formation using RCA and RS. SEM imaging corroborated this by revealing a bond between the cement paste and the aggregates. Incorporating RS and RCA in concrete mixtures impressively yielded a compressive strength of 26.22 N/mm2 in M20-grade concrete. The study concludes that using RCA and RS waste materials in the construction sector underlines that sustainable practices can be integrated without compromising material quality. This approach aligns with sustainable development goals and fosters a more environmentally friendly construction industry.

This research focuses on the urban expansion occurring in the Kamrup Metropolitan District—an area experiencing significant urbanization—with the aim of understanding its patterns and projecting future growth. The research covers the period from 2000 to 2022 and projects growth up to 2052, providing insights for sustainable urban planning. The study utilizes the maximum likelihood method for land use/land cover (LULC) delineation and the Shannon entropy technique for assessing urban sprawl. Additionally, it integrates the cellular automata (CA)-Markov model and the analytical hierarchy process (AHP) for future projections. The results indicate a considerable shift from non-built-up to built-up areas, with the proportion of built-up areas expected to reach 36.2% by 2032 and 40.54% by 2052. These findings emphasize the importance of strategic urban management and sustainable planning. The study recommends adaptive urban planning strategies and highlights the value of integrating the CA Markov model and AHP for policymakers and urban planners. This can contribute to the discourse on sustainable urban development and informed decision-making.

Background and Aims: The quality of recovery (QoR)-40 score has been used worldwide and validated in many surgical cohorts to assess global patient recovery. We aim to translate and culturally adapt the QoR-40 score into Hindi and test the validity and reliability of the translated version in patients undergoing cancer surgery. Methods: The translation of the QoR-40 questionnaire was based on the forward and backward translation methods. Patients filled out the translated version of the QoR-40 preoperatively, on the third postoperative day in the morning (POD3) and the evening. The reliability of the translated questionnaire was checked for internal consistency, test-retest reliability and split-half reliability. Construct validity was assessed with a correlation coefficient value between the total QoR-40 score, visual analogue scale (VAS) for pain and total length of hospital stay. Content validity was evaluated for feasibility and understanding. Results: The questionnaire was completed by 350 patients. The correlation coefficient r for repeatability was 0.21, the split-half test was 0.92, and Cronbach’s alpha was 0.82. The correlation between QoR-40 on POD3 with VAS score and length of stay was -0.35 and -0.67, respectively. The average time to complete the questionnaire was 3.8 minutes; 90% of the respondents found the translated questionnaire easy to understand, and 92% of the patients related the questions to their recovery. Conclusion: The Hindi translation of the QoR-40 questionnaire is a valid and reliable version of the original questionnaire in English to assess the QoR in Hindi-speaking patients after cancer surgery.

Abstract Succinic acid (SA) is one of the top platform chemicals with huge applications in diverse sectors. The presence of two carboxylic acid groups on the terminal carbon atoms makes SA a highly functional molecule that can be derivatized into a wide range of products. The biological route for SA production is a cleaner, greener, and promising technological option with huge potential to sequester the potent greenhouse gas, carbon dioxide. The recycling of renewable carbon of biomass (an indirect form of CO2), along with fixing CO2 in the form of SA, offers a carbon-negative SA manufacturing route to reduce atmospheric CO2 load. These attractive attributes compel a paradigm shift from fossil-based to microbial SA manufacturing, as evidenced by several commercial-scale bio-SA production in the last decade. The current review article scrutinizes the existing knowledge and covers SA production by the most efficient SA producers, including several bacteria and yeast strains. The review starts with the biochemistry of the major pathways accumulating SA as an end product. It discusses the SA production from a variety of pure and crude renewable sources by native as well as engineered strains with details of pathway/metabolic, evolutionary, and process engineering approaches for enhancing TYP (titer, yield, and productivity) metrics. The review is then extended to recent progress on separation technologies to recover SA from fermentation broth. Thereafter, SA derivatization opportunities via chemo-catalysis are discussed for various high-value products, which are only a few steps away. The last two sections are devoted to the current scenario of industrial production of bio-SA and associated challenges, along with the author's perspective.

Abstract Background Primary intracranial Ewing’s sarcoma (ES) is a type of primitive neuroectodermal tumour and is a rare malignant tumour in children and adolescents. The imaging features of ES overlap with other central nervous system embryonal tumours, making it difficult to pinpoint a specific diagnosis. We aim to explore the clinical, neuroimaging and differential diagnoses of this entity. Case presentation We describe a 6-month-old infant who presented with complaints of enlarging the head size and poor feeding. Imaging revealed a contrast-enhancing large solid-cystic mass lesion with internal calcification, focal bone erosion and haemorrhage in the posterior fossa. Histopathological examinations, immunohistochemistry, and molecular analysis confirmed ES. Conclusions The confirmative diagnosis of primary intracranial ES requires histological examination, immunohistochemical analysis, and genetic detection, along with radiological findings. Surgical excision followed by combined radiotherapy and chemotherapy is the treatment of choice.

Abstract The importance and significance of magnetic fields in the astrophysical scenario is well known. Many domains of astrophysical black hole physics such as polarized shadow image, high energy emitting processes and jet formation are dependent on the behavior of the magnetic fields in the vicinity of the compact objects. In light of this, we determine the master equation and master differential equation that determine the spatial behavior of the magnetic field inside a matter distribution or vacuum region, of general spherically symmetric metric, which is immersed in a test magnetic field. We also investigate here the case of JMN-1 singularity immersed in a uniform weak magnetic field and determine the behavior of magnetic fields by defining electromagnetic four potential vector. We find that the tangential component of the magnetic field is discontinuous at the matching surface of the JMN-1 singularity with the external Schwarzschild metric, resulting in surface currents. We define the covariant expression of surface current density in this scenario. We also analyze the behavior of center-of-mass energy of two oppositely charged particles in the geometry of the magnetized JMN-1 singularity. We briefly discuss the possible scenarios which would possess a discontinuous magnetic field and implications of the same and future possibilities in the realm of astrophysics are indicated.

This study assesses the impact of mergers and acquisitions on Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) performance and market value of acquiring companies operating in India. Data were collected and analyzed from 69 M&A announcements from January 2010 to June 2023, sourced from the Bloomberg database. The analysis reveals a positive correlation between the post-merger market value of acquiring firms and their ESG performance, indicating that an improvement in ESG factors is associated with increased market value after mergers. Additionally, a positive correlation was identified between acquiring companies’ post-merger ESG performance and their target firms’ pre-merger ESG performance. This finding suggests that when acquiring a target firm with high ESG performance, the acquirer is likely to experience an improvement in its own post-merger ESG performance. Moreover, both the post-merger market value and ESG performance of the acquirer are likely to improve with the profitability and size of firms but will have a negative impact based on the leverage components of the acquiring firms.

Abstract Aerosols influence weather and climate by interacting with radiation through absorption and scattering. These effects heavily rely on the optical properties of aerosols, which are mainly governed by attributes such as morphology, size distribution, and chemical composition. These attributes undergo continuous changes due to chemical reactions and aerosol micro-physics, resulting in significant spatio-temporal variations. Most atmospheric models struggle to incorporate this variability because they use pre-calculated tables to handle aerosol optics. This offline approach often leads to substantial errors in estimating the radiative impacts of aerosols along with posing significant computational burdens. To address this challenge, we introduce a computationally efficient and robust machine learning approach called MieAI. It allows for relatively inexpensive calculation of the optical properties of internally mixed aerosols with a log-normal size distribution. Importantly, MieAI fully incorporates the variability in aerosol chemistry and microphysics. Our evaluation of MieAI against traditional Mie calculations, using number concentrations from the ICOsahedral Nonhydrostatic model with Aerosol and Reactive Trace gases (ICON-ART) simulations, demonstrates that MieAI exhibits excellent predictive accuracy for aerosol optical properties. MieAI achieves this with errors well within 10%, and it operates more than 1000 times faster than the benchmark approach of Mie calculations. Due to its generalized nature, the MieAI approach can be implemented in any chemistry transport model which represents aerosol size distribution in the form of log-normally distributed internally mixed modes. This advancement has the potential to replace frequently employed look-up tables and plays a substantial role in the ongoing attempts to reduce uncertainties in estimating aerosol radiative forcing.

Abstract ZnO based piezoelectric nanogenerators (PENG) hold immense potential for harvesting ambient vibrational mechanical energy into electrical energy, offering sustainable solutions in the field of self-powered sensors, wearable electronics, human–machine interactions etc. In this study, we have developed flexible ZnO-based PENGs by incorporating ZnO microparticles into PDMS matrix, with ZnO concentration ranging from 5 to 25 wt%. Among these, the PENG containing 15 wt% ZnO exhibited the best performance with an open-circuit output voltage/short-circuit current of ~ 42.4 V/2.4 µA. To further enhance the output performance of PENG, p-type NiO was interfaced with ZnO in a bulk hetero-junction geometry. The concentration of NiO was varied from 5 to 20 wt% with respect to ZnO and incorporated into the PDMS matrix to fabricate the PENGs. The PENG containing 10 wt% NiO exhibits the best performance with an open-circuit output voltage/short-circuit current of ~ 65 V/4.1 µA under loading conditions of 30 N and 4 Hz. The PENG exhibiting the best performance demonstrates a maximum instantaneous output power density ~ 37.9 µW/cm2 across a load resistance of 20 MΩ under loading conditions of 30 N and 4 Hz, with a power density per unit force and Hertz of about ~ 0.32 µW/cm2·N·Hz. The enhanced output performance of the PENG is attributed to the reduction in free electron concentration, which suppresses the internal screening effect of the piezopotential. To assess the practical utility of the optimized PENG, we tested the powering capability by charging various commercial capacitors and used the stored energy to illuminate 10 LEDs and to power a stopwatch displays. This work not only presents a straightforward, cost-effective, and scalable technique for enhancing the output performance of ZnO-based PENGs but also sheds light on its underlying mechanism.

Abstract Efficiently mapping of cell types in situ remains a major challenge in spatial transcriptomics. Most spot deconvolution tools ignore spatial coordinate information and perform extremely slow on large datasets. Here, we introduce SpatialPrompt, a spatially aware and scalable tool for spot deconvolution and domain identification. SpatialPrompt integrates gene expression, spatial location, and single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) dataset as reference to accurately infer cell-type proportions of spatial spots. SpatialPrompt uses non-negative ridge regression and graph neural network to efficiently capture local microenvironment information. Our extensive benchmarking analysis on Visium, Slide-seq, and MERFISH datasets demonstrated superior performance of SpatialPrompt over 15 existing tools. On mouse hippocampus dataset, SpatialPrompt achieves spot deconvolution and domain identification within 2 minutes for 50,000 spots. Overall, domain identification using SpatialPrompt was 44 to 150 times faster than existing methods. We build a database housing 40 plus curated scRNA-seq datasets for seamless integration with SpatialPrompt for spot deconvolution.

Background and Aim: Sexed semen (SS), a reproductive biotechnology tool, can alter the sex ratio of offspring in bovines. This study elucidates a comparative analysis of estrus-related parameters influencing conception rate and pregnancy losses under field conditions between conventional and SS. Materials and Methods: In the present study, artificial insemination with (SS; n = 143) and conventional semen (CS; n = 143) was performed at spontaneous estrus, i.e., 16–18 h after the onset of estrus signs, to analyze their comparative evaluation in terms of conception rates in crossbred cows under field conditions. Different parameters such as age, parity, body condition score (BCS), estrus duration, inter-estrus interval (IEI), diameter of pre-ovulatory follicle (DPOF) at estrus, and cervical mucus properties (pH and spinnbarkeit [SBK]) were recorded for each cow. Results: The first insemination conception rates for sexed and conventional semen were 55.24% and 63.63% whereas the overall conception rates were 49.14% and 57.37% on days 35 and 75 post-insemination, respectively, with no significant difference (p > 0.05). Conception rates between sexed and CS inseminations were statistically significant (p < 0.01), whereas factors such as age, parity, BCS, DPOF, IEI, and SBK value exhibited no substantial variance (p > 0.05) for both types of semen straw. Conclusion: SS straws yielded a conception rate equivalent to CS straws, with estrus duration being the key factor affecting conception under field conditions.

Abstract Background Down cow syndrome is commonly described in dairy cattle. The diagnosis and treatment of nonambulatory cattle is challenging and prognostic indicators of this condition in beef cattle have not been determined. Objectives Evaluate records of beef cattle (≥2 years of age) presented to 2 referral hospitals for inability to stand and identify prognostic indicators for survival to discharge. Animals Sixty‐three adult beef cattle treated for inability to stand at 2 referral hospitals. Methods Medical records of 63 beef cattle presented for inability to stand between January 2010 and December 2022 were retrospectively analyzed. Continuous and categorical variables were included in univariate and multivariate regression models to evaluate their association with outcome. Results Of 63 animals included in the study, 19% (12/63) were discharged, and the remaining 81% (n = 51) either died (11.1%) or were euthanized (69.8%). The odds of being discharged increased with each additional day of hospitalization (odds ratio [OR], 2.66; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.39‐6.89) and with each additional flotation therapy session (OR, 2.108; 95% CI, 1.209‐4.219). Down beef cattle with a diagnosis of calving peripheral nerve paralysis and capable of walking out the tank after the first flotation session were 6.66 (95% CI, 1.58‐35.51) and 30 (95% CI, 4.4‐614.98) times more likely to be discharged compared with cattle that had other diagnoses and those that were unable to walk out the tank, respectively. Conclusions and Clinical Importance Treatment of nonambulatory beef cattle carries a poor prognosis. Practitioners can use information from our study as a guide for treatment or euthanasia decisions of nonambulatory beef cattle.
