This paper proposes some considerations on the late ancient/early medieval Christian buildings (churches, chapels, etc.) identified in Ostia and its suburban area, for some of which there are still doubts and uncertainties about their actual use, their architectural structure and their chronology. About the urban area, some archaeological contexts, including burials, found in old archaeological excavations and some buildings, recognized as used for Christian worship, have been revised with an examination of the still preserved walls and of their hypothetical plans, analyzing in one case also its historical-archival aspects. Furthermore, the relationship with the previous buildings on which these Christian structures were built and their connection with the urban road network were verified. Regarding the Christian buildings in the suburb (the basilica of Pianabella, the basilica of St. Ercolano and the basilica of St. Aurea), some common features have been identified: all of them are located in the burial areas, with the same orientation, and connected to important roads of the suburb of Ostia.

The organisation of the eastern suburbia of Ostia in the Roman period was strongly influenced by the ancient via Ostiensis, the main road connecting Ostia to Rome, and by the waterway represented by the Tiber. In this area the Tiber was characterized by a meander that was converted into an oxbow lake after the flood of 1557, that created the present river course. The river channel divided the extra-urban territory of Ostia into two distinct parts, one on the left bank (the area of the present medieval Borgo and the surrounding area) mainly occupied by a necropolis, and the right bank (called Trastevere ostiense), located within the palaeomeander loop and separated from the city of Ostia by the river channel. This multidisciplinary study was conducted in recent years by the Italian-French-English team based on the archival research from previous twentieth century excavations conducted in the area, combining the results of previous and new geophysical surveys and new sedimentary coring. This work reconstructs the archaeological context in relation to environmental changes, thereby making it possible to create some hypotheses about the use of this part of the suburb of the city of Ostia in Late Republican and Imperial times.

Along via Ostiensis, near the St. Paul’s Basilica, an important part of a roman cemetery was digged up in 1917 during roadworks and now it is still visible. This funerary area, where the most common typology is a small familiar building (columbarium), was dated from the 2nd century B.C. to 3rd-4th century A.D. At the end of the archaeological survey, only a little part of the funerary area was restored, provided with a covering and opened to the public. Elegant paintings of natural and mythological elements decorate most of the tombs, in some cases also connected with stucco decorations, and they constitute one of the most significant testimonies of the funerary art in Rome. Actually, an interdisciplinary research is focused to the study of the painted decorations, with the analysis of the painting technique and the pigments used. Moreover, based on the study of the successive restorations carried out during the twentieth-century and actual conservative state of the funerary building decorations, the investigation of the degradation phenomena of these architectural surfaces is in progress, in order to the monitoring, the maintenance and the conservation of these important frescos. - Abstract
When the restoration of archaeological metal artifacts is considered, the reconstruction and chromatic treatment of the gaps often determine the correct reading of the object, by suggesting its original morphology and external coloring as linked to the degraded surfaces. However, for such a kind of artifact, it is particularly frequent to deal with a remarkable diversity of reconstructions and integrations related to conceptions usually based on opposing principles ranging from mimetic integrations up to a strict rigorism. The purpose of the present work is to contribute to the definition of a conservative intervention protocol based on the reversibility to get a correct and widely perceptive presentation of the restoration work for this kind of artifacts, aimed at their formal reconstruction and aesthetic retouching., Quando o restauro de artefactos metálicos arqueológicos é considerado, a reconstrução e o tratamento cromático das lacunas geralmente determinam a leitura correta do objeto, sugerindo a sua morfologia original e a coloração externa associadas às superfícies degradadas. The Gandharan archaeological sites are mostly located in the Indus Suture Zone and in the lower Swat. In a recent past, scholars observed the use of local different type of schists to build buildings and sacred artworks. In this new research we highlighted the use of limestone for stucco artefacts and architectural decorations. This limestone is not a local rock in Swat but its main, ex- tended and closer outcrops are located in the mountains northwest of Islamabad. Indeed, through specific analyses carried out by our team, the compatibility of these outcrops with the rocks used for stucco artefacts and stucco decorations of buildings was observed. This stucco was made by a mixture of different kinds of local crushed rocks (i.e. schists and granites)., Restauro Archeologico, Vol. 27 No. 1 (2019)

During the activities of the Italian Institute for the Conservation and Restoration (ISCR), we carried out a conservative intervention on some marble high reliefs and statues from the main altar dossal of the Cathedral of Orte, near Rome. Probably, this dossal was built in the first years of the sixteenth century, perhaps with artworks (reliefs and statues) originally belonging to two different altars. Furthermore, some marble sculptures of the altar show a re-use from Antiquity. All reliefs and statues were painted and gilded in the original phase, but later (at the end of the sixteenth century) the sculptures were re-painted and re-gilded in a different way. In the eighteenth century, the altar was dismembered and each part had a different re-use with a new polychrome covering. Some sculptures show extended polychromies and gildings, some conserve only a few traces of them and some have none. In particular, some sculptures show large areas of well-preserved gilding with evident gaps. During the restoration of these sculptures we have had some problems: in particular, we wondered, what would be the best methodology to integrate polychrome and gilded gaps?Would it be better to integrate only the small gaps or also the large ones? Which materials we would use for integrations and which technique will be preferred: an identifiable or a mimetic one? This contribution will illustrate different methodological and technical proposals regarding retouching. For a correct methodology we took inspiration from recent treatments adopted in ISCR on different materials especially terracotta and wood sculptures. Moreover, whereas the artworks were re-painted and re-gilded in different ages and for different use, it is very important to restore the artworks leaving visible all traces of several decorative phases. Now, the most ancient polychromies are not visible because they are under new polychromies or gildings.

This research will analyse the different uses of the surroundings of Roman Ostia in ancient time and the problem of the main road in this territory, especially thanks to the new archaeological excavations. The suburbium of Ostia was conditioned by natural elements: the sea in the West, the Lagoon in the East and the Tiber with its meander in the North. In the imperial age, we can identify several areas with different uses, also conditioned by hydrogeological restrictions. In particular, we can recognise a large funerary area at the South-East of the Roman city ; furthermore, along the southern side of ancient via Ostiense, another area with commercial activities near the Tiber meander is to be found, whereas along the banks of the Lagoon the new archaeological investigations found remains of farming and craft activities, related in some cases with residential settlements, and traces of the drainage systems with amphoras of marshy land.

International audience; This study examines the long-term interactions between the well-known Roman city of Ostia and a river meander. Located at the mouth of the Tiber river, Ostia was a major harbor city that connected Rome to the Mediterranean Sea. Based on aerial photography and borehole analysis, the paleodynamics of the Fiume Morto's paleomeander are understood to be linked to the urban evolution of the city of Ostia. Four periods of evolution have been identified as a result of this interdisciplinary work: (1) the foundation of Ostia's urban center, in the 4th to 3rd century BC, occurred when the meander already existed; (2) between the 4th century BC and the 3rd century AD, human/environmental interactions contributed to the compound growth of the meander that possibly eroded an important Roman road linking Ostia to Rome; (3) from the Imperial period until the meander was cut off in AD 1557–1562, the constricted meander channel at the apex led to the stability of the downstream river channel; (4) the cutoff of the paleomeander was completed in 1562, leading to the filling of the paleochannel. These successive phases of channel evolution mark changing fluvial risks from the Roman period to today.

- Abstract
In the first phase of study on Gandharan artefacts (2014-15), the Istituto Superiore per la Conservazione ed il Restauro (ISCR) was focused on technological and conservative issues of some schist stone and stucco sculptures belonging to the collection of the Museum of Oriental Art of Rome (ex MNAO, now merged into the Museo delle Civiltà). Experts of different disciplines evaluated the conditions of the stone artworks, to define the best conservation approaches and treatments. Chemists and restorers compared cleaning methods and evaluated consolidation and sticking practices. In our further studies we also consider stucco and clay artworks, deepening our research through scientific analyses and observation carried out on both archaeological founds (Afghanistan, Pakistan) and musealized sculptures (Civic Archaeological Museum of Milan, Oriental Art Museum of Turin and Guimet Museum of Paris). This further work allowed, through the characterization of the materials and the observation of the working techniques, to deepen the study of the Gandharan stone, stucco and clay artworks and to formulate operational hypothesis for their conservation. - Abstract
This paper will discuss the scientific results of a recent sampling of the polychrome and gilded stone, stucco and clay sculptures of Gandharan art not yet published. Four years ago, we had the opportunity to begin an articulated research project focused on the Gandharan polychrome stone and stucco sculptures, and in the last two years, thanks to a very limited grant, offered by the Italian Government to the Istituto Superiore per la Conservazione ed il Restauro (ISCR), we had the opportunity to develop a new research. This allowed us to investigate some important artefacts displayed in these Museums: the Archaeological Museum of Milan, the Museum of Oriental Art of Turin, the Museum Guimet in Paris. Moreover, we had the opportunity to take some archaeological samples from the new excavations of the Italian Archaeological Mission in Pakistan and the Italian Archaeological Mission in Afghanistan. In this new research we analysed the artistic technique of painting and gilding on sculptures of Gandharan art made in different materials (stone, stucco and clay). The results discussed in this paper comes from a notable number of chemical analyses (optical stero-microscope, SEM-EDS, micro-FTIR, micro-XRD and micro- Raman). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

UTILITY functions , *CORROSION & anti-corrosives , *METAL complexes , *ARCHAEOLOGISTS , *AESTHETICS - Abstract
The task of the conservator, in cooperation with the archaeologist, is to analyse archaeological material from an historical and technical standpoint in such a way that the act of conserving prior to presentation of an artefact is designed and executed for the specific artefact. This intervention must be carried out in a competent manner, i.e. the form and recognition must not be disrupted. Unfortunately, due to the corrosion of metal objects, artefacts change, which make the work of the conservator difficult. During instruction at the ISCR (Instituto Superiore per la Conservazione ed il Restauro), the possibilities for reconstructing complex metal artefacts in a collection, which shows signs of formal and aesthetic integrity, were analysed as examples. It involved filling the caesurae and defects in morphology and size. This work was aimed at restoring the integrity of the work on the formal and aesthetic side. The study also recapitulates the contribution in terms of the historical utility function of the studied objects and their technical properties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article discusses graves of women in a Roman burial site in a suburban area of the ancient city of Ostia in Italy. A diagram of the site is included. The location and composition of the burial site or necropolis is described in terms of both ancient and modern landmarks. The article then also addresses developments at the archaeological site such as the stringing of electric lines for the use of archaeologists. The disposition, contents, and precise location of a number of individual graves are then among other things discussed.

- Abstract
This work concern severalfindings of the last years infunerary contexts in the Ostiense suburbiums, during archaeological investigations carried out by the Soprintendenza Archeologica of Ostia. The latest excavations provided new data to understand the width of the vast funerary area, that probably extended uninterruptedly from East to South of the ancient city of Ostia. New evidences about the funerary rituals came to light, and emerged first anthropological data referred to inhumated and cremated people from Ostia. The results, compared with those obtained from the numerous Rome's necropolis, bring to a preliminary reconstruction of the burial practices in a territory directly connected with Rome, where are reported female's graves of extreme archaeological and anthropological interest.
