Abstract Metabolic reprogramming of host cells plays critical roles during viral infection. Itaconate, a metabolite produced from cis-aconitate in the tricarboxylic acid cycle (TCA) by immune responsive gene 1 (IRG1), is involved in regulating innate immune response and pathogen infection. However, its involvement in viral infection and underlying mechanisms remain incompletely understood. Here, we demonstrate that the IRG1-itaconate axis facilitates the infections of VSV and IAV in macrophages and epithelial cells via Rab GTPases redistribution. Mechanistically, itaconate promotes the retention of Rab GTPases on the membrane via directly alkylating Rab GDP dissociation inhibitor beta (GDI2), the latter of which extracts Rab GTPases from the membrane to the cytoplasm. Multiple alkylated residues by itaconate, including cysteines 203, 335, and 414 on GDI2, were found to be important during viral infection. Additionally, this effect of itaconate needs an adequate distribution of Rab GTPases on the membrane, which relies on Rab geranylgeranyl transferase (GGTase-II)-mediated geranylgeranylation of Rab GTPases. The single-cell RNA sequencing data revealed high expression of IRG1 primarily in neutrophils during viral infection. Co-cultured and in vivo animal experiments demonstrated that itaconate produced by neutrophils plays a dominant role in promoting viral infection. Overall, our study reveals that neutrophils-derived itaconate facilitates viral infection via redistribution of Rab GTPases, suggesting potential targets for antiviral therapy.

Abstract Purpose This study aimed to evaluate the neurological outcomes of Metastatic epidural spinal cord compression (MESCC) patients who underwent decompressive surgery after experiencing over 48 h of paralysis. Methods This retrospective study hypothesizes that, unlike in cases of trauma and degenerative disorders where delayed decompression surgery often leads to poor outcomes, delayed decompression surgery for MESCC-induced paralysis yields relatively favorable results. This study included MESCC patients who had been paralyzed for more than 48 h and underwent decompressive surgery between January 2012 and December 2020. Data collected mainly included patient demographics, tumor pathologies, neurological function (Frankel grades), ambulatory status, and imaging manifestions. The primary outcome measure was neurological recovery. Results A total of 37 patients were included, with a median preoperative paralysis duration of 9 days. Following decompressive surgery, 30 patients (81.1%) improved by at least one Frankel grade. Specifically, 22 patients (59.5%) regained ambulatory ability. The percentages of patients with Frankel grades A, B, and C who regained ambulation after surgery were 28.6% (2 out of 7), 57.1% (8 out of 14), and 75.0% (12 out of 16), respectively. Conclusions Decompressive surgery is associated with significant neurological recovery in MESCC patients who have been non-ambulatory for more than 48 h. Surgical intervention remains beneficial even in cases of prolonged paralysis.

Abstract Study design Retrospective cohort study. Purpose To explore the complications and risk factors for total resection (TR) of primary thoracic and lumbar spinal tumors over the past decade at our institution. Methods Patients meeting inclusion criteria (primary spinal tumors, thoracic or lumbar location, TR at our center) were included. Demographic characteristics, surgical data, perioperative complications and management results were reviewed. Patients were stratified by tumor site, the number of excised segments, and recurrence status to elucidate distinctive characteristics. Results The cohort comprised 103 patients, with a mean age of 35.8 years. On average, 1.83 vertebral segments were resected per patient. Perioperative complications were substantial, totaling 166 events, with 71 classified as major and 95 as minor, yielding an average of 1.61 complications per patient. No perioperative deaths occurred, but 79 patients (76.7%) experienced at least one complication. Multiple vertebral sections correlated with a higher complication rate (P = 0.031), and lumbar surgeries exhibited elevated risks of large vascular injury (P = 0.001), neurological deterioration, and cerebrospinal fluid leakage compared to thoracic cases. Conversely, thoracic spinal procedures showed a higher rate of pleural effusion (P = 0.004). Binary logistics stepwise regression identified multi-segmental resection as the independent risk factor for major perioperative complications. Conclusions TR of primary spinal tumors is associated with a high perioperative complication rate, although most events have a favorable prognosis. Complication characteristics vary based on the surgical site, number of excised segments, and surgical history. A nuanced preoperative evaluating approach considering patient age, surgical segments, and extent of resection is crucial.

ABSTRACT Background Empathy is an inaccessible part of advanced social cognitive functions in humans. Impairment of empathy greatly affects the quality of life of patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) but the underlying neurophysiologic mechanisms have not been established. Objectives The dynamic process of brain oscillations in PD pain empathy was explored and the mechanism of empathy damage was studied. Methods A total of 27 patients with PD and 13 healthy controls were recruited to undergo a pain judgment task, and the event‐related potentials were recorded. This study compared the changes in theta and beta oscillations among two groups after the presentation of painful and neutral stimuli. Results Time–frequency analysis results revealed that patients with PD exhibited event‐related theta oscillation synchronization and beta oscillation desynchronization during pain empathy. Compared to healthy controls, patients with PD exhibited a reduced magnitude of beta oscillation desynchronization in response to painful stimuli and attenuated synchronization of theta oscillations induced by neutral stimuli. There are abnormal beta power differences between painful and neutral stimuli, while no differences were found in theta power in PD. Moreover, a positive correlation existed between the degree of beta oscillation desynchronization associated with painful stimuli and the accuracy of pain judgments. Conclusion Pain empathy deficits in PD were associated with reduced dynamic modulation of brain theta and beta oscillations.

BackgroundThe Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) is a valuable tool for detecting cognitive impairment, widely used in many countries. However, there is still a lack of large sample normative data and whose cut-off values for detecting cognitive impairment is considerable controversy.MethodsThe assessment conducted in this study utilizes the MoCA scale, specifically employing the Mandarin-8.1 version. This study recruited a total of 3,097 healthy adults aged over 20 years. We performed multiple linear regression analysis, incorporating age, gender, and education level as predictor variables, to examine their associations with the MoCA total score and subdomain scores. Subsequently, we established normative values stratified by age and education level. Finally, we included 242 patients with vascular cognitive impairment (VCI) and 137 controls with normal cognition, and determined the optimal cut-off value of VCI through ROC curves.ResultsThe participants in this study exhibit a balanced gender distribution, with an average age of 54.46 years (SD = 14.38) and an average education period of 9.49 years (SD = 4.61). The study population demonstrates an average MoCA score of 23.25 points (SD = 4.82). The multiple linear regression analysis indicates that MoCA total score is influenced by age and education level, collectively accounting for 46.8% of the total variance. Higher age and lower education level are correlated with lower MoCA total scores. A score of 22 is the optimal cut-off value for diagnosing vascular cognitive impairment (VCI).ConclusionThis study offered normative MoCA values specific to the Chinese adults. Furthermore, this study indicated that a score of 26 may not represent the most optimal cut-off value for VCI. And for detecting VCI, a score of 22 may be a better cut-off value.

Abstract Background Spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage (sICH) is associated with significant mortality and morbidity. Predicting the prognosis of patients with sICH remains an important issue, which significantly affects treatment decisions. Utilizing readily available clinical parameters to anticipate the unfavorable prognosis of sICH patients holds notable clinical significance. This study employs five machine learning algorithms to establish a practical platform for the prediction of short-term prognostic outcomes in individuals afflicted with sICH. Methods Within the framework of this retrospective analysis, the model underwent training utilizing data gleaned from 413 cases from the training center, with subsequent validation employing data from external validation center. Comprehensive clinical information, laboratory analysis results, and imaging features pertaining to sICH patients were harnessed as training features for machine learning. We developed and validated the model efficacy using all the selected features of the patients using five models: Support Vector Machine (SVM), Logistic Regression (LR), Random Forest (RF), XGboost and LightGBM, respectively. The process of Recursive Feature Elimination (RFE) was executed for optimal feature screening. An internal five-fold cross-validation was employed to pinpoint the most suitable hyperparameters for the model, while an external five-fold cross-validation was implemented to discern the machine learning model demonstrating the superior average performance. Finally, the machine learning model with the best average performance is selected as our final model while using it for external validation. Evaluation of the machine learning model’s performance was comprehensively conducted through the utilization of the ROC curve, accuracy, and other relevant indicators. The SHAP diagram was utilized to elucidate the variable importance within the model, culminating in the amalgamation of the above metrics to discern the most succinct features and establish a practical prognostic prediction platform. Results A total of 413 patients with sICH patients were collected in the training center, of which 180 were patients with poor prognosis. A total of 74 patients with sICH were collected in the external validation center, of which 26 were patients with poor prognosis. Within the training set, the test set AUC values for SVM, LR, RF, XGBoost, and LightGBM models were recorded as 0.87, 0.896, 0.916, 0.885, and 0.912, respectively. Objective Re‐resection of spinal giant cell tumors is an exceedingly difficult procedure. Moreover, the prognosis of patients with en bloc resection or intralesional excision for re‐resection has rarely been reported. This study aimed to compare the prognostic value of en bloc resection with that of intralesional excision in patients undergoing re‐resection for giant cell tumors of the spine. Methods This retrospective analysis evaluated patients who underwent revision surgeries for relapse of giant cell tumors of the spine at our center between January 2005 and January 2021. Local progression‐free survival represents the duration between en bloc resection or intralesional excision and tumor recurrence. Neurological recovery, survival rates, local control, and complications were evaluated. The Kaplan–Meier estimator was used for survival analysis. Abstract Background En bloc resection of spinal tumors is challenging and associated with a high incidence of complications; however, it offers the potential to reduce the risk of recurrence when a wide margin is achieved. This research aims to investigate the safety and efficacy of en bloc resection in treating thoracic and lumbar chondrosarcoma/chordoma. Methods Data from patients diagnosed with chondrosarcoma and chordoma in the thoracic or lumbar region, who underwent total en bloc or piecemeal resection at our institution over a 7-year period, were collected and regularly followed up. The study analyzed overall perioperative complications and compared differences in complications and local tumor recurrence between the two surgical methods. Results Seventeen patients were included, comprising 12 with chondrosarcoma and 5 with chordoma. Among them, 5 cases underwent intralesional piecemeal resection, while the remaining 12 underwent planned en bloc resection. The average surgical time was 684 min (sd = 287), and the mean estimated blood loss was 2300 ml (sd = 1599). Thirty-five complications were recorded, with an average of 2.06 perioperative complications per patient. 82% of patients (14/17) experienced at least one perioperative complication, and major complications occurred in 64.7% (11/17). Five patients had local recurrence during the follow-up, with a mean recurrence time of 16.2 months (sd = 7.2) and a median recurrence time of 20 months (IQR = 12.5). Hospital stays, operation time, blood loss, and complication rates did not significantly differ between the two surgical methods. The local recurrence rate after en bloc resection was lower than piecemeal resection, although not statistically significant (P = 0.067). Conclusions The complication rates between the two surgical procedures were similar. Considering safety and local tumor control, en bloc resection is recommended as the primary choice for patients with chondrosarcoma/chordoma in the thoracic and lumbar regions who are eligible for this treatment.

In recent years, lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have gained immense popularity and widespread adoption in various applications. Due to the voltage and capacity requirements of these applications, a single LIB is often inadequate. To meet these demands, LIBs are interconnected in series and parallel configurations to achieve higher voltage and capacity levels. To improve performance and prolong the lifespan of battery packs, battery equalization methods are employed to ensure balanced state-of-charge (SOC) and voltage levels among individual battery cells. Passive battery equalization methods are commonly utilized in industrial applications due to their simplicity and cost-effectiveness. The implementation of complex techniques to enhance performance may not be suitable for passive equalization methods, as it would introduce complications and increase implementation costs. This paper introduces two innovative equalization methods: the rank-sum ratio (RSR) based method and the piecewise function based (PFSO) method. These methods leverage real-time internal resistance measurement devices to enhance the equalization process. To evaluate their effectiveness, the simulation model of battery module is developed based on the Thévenin-based equivalent circuit, utilizing data obtained from hybrid pulse power characteristic (HPPC) tests. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed methods outperform other passive equalization methods, including the SOC-based and voltage-based methods. In a setting with a 16-cell battery module possessing a total capacity of 51.2V and 104Ah, the RSR and PFSO methods can equalize the battery module, adjusting the capacity from 98.97Ah to 102.56Ah and 101.12Ah, respectively, as opposed to the 100.90Ah and 100.09Ah achieved by the SOC-based and voltage-based methods.

Upper Ordovician Wufeng to Lower Silurian Longmaxi formations in Nanchuan region, as an important shale gas productive layer, is characterized by large shale thickness, deep burial depth, and complex in-situ stress with rapid direction changes. Therefore, the study of in-situ stress field is of significance for effective deve-lopment of shale gas in the study area. In order to clarify the characteristics and distribution of the in-situ stress field, the SHELLS finite element stress field modeling method, with faults, topography, heat flow, petrophysical parameters and boundary conditions as constraints, was used in the study of the stress field in the Wufeng-Longmaxi formations in the Nanchuan region.The results indicate that the maximum compressive horizontal principal stress is in thrust regime and that there are four principal stress directions and regions in general: NW-SE, NE-SW, near EW and near SN. The strain rate is in thrust regime, with three regions of low strain rate (magnitude ≤ -18), medium strain rate (magnitude between -18 and -17.6) and high strain rate (magnitude ≥ -17.6) and their corresponding NE-SW, NW-SE, SN and EW spreading directions. The fault slip rate regime is in thrust, the fault slip rates range from 0 to 0.001 2 mm/a. The modeled results of the maximum compressive horizontal principal stress, the strain rate and fault slip rate were compared with the measured data respectively, including the maximum compressive horizontal principal stress directions measured in drilled wells, the regime and magnitude of strain rate in Guizhou and Chongqing, and the properties of regional faults. The modeled results showed high agreement with the measured data, indicating the accuracy of the predicted results. Finally, based on fracture openness and fracture development revealed by modeled results, favorable fractured reservoir development zones for shale gas was evaluated, and class Ⅰ and Ⅱ zones for further exploration and development were predicted.

Abstract Background Cerebral specialization and interhemispheric cooperation are two vital features of the human brain. Their dysfunction may be associated with disease progression in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD), which is featured as progressive cognitive degeneration and asymmetric neuropathology. Objective This study aimed to examine and define two inherent properties of hemispheric function in patients with AD by utilizing resting‐state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs‐fMRI). Methods Sixty‐four clinically diagnosed AD patients and 52 age‐ and sex‐matched cognitively normal subjects were recruited and underwent MRI and clinical evaluation. We calculated and compared brain specialization (autonomy index, AI) and interhemispheric cooperation (connectivity between functionally homotopic voxels, CFH). Results In comparison to healthy controls, patients with AD exhibited enhanced AI in the left middle occipital gyrus. This increase in specialization can be attributed to reduced functional connectivity in the contralateral region, such as the right temporal lobe. The CFH of the bilateral precuneus and prefrontal areas was significantly decreased in AD patients compared to controls. Imaging‐cognitive correlation analysis indicated that the CFH of the right prefrontal cortex was marginally positively related to the Montreal Cognitive Assessment score in patients and the Auditory Verbal Learning Test score. Moreover, taking abnormal AI and CFH values as features, support vector machine‐based classification achieved good accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and area under the curve by leave‐one‐out cross‐validation. Conclusion This study suggests that individuals with AD have abnormal cerebral specialization and interhemispheric cooperation. This provides new insights for further elucidation of the pathological mechanisms of AD.

Background: Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is an effective noninvasive neuromodulation technique for Parkinson's disease (PD). However, the efficacy of rTMS varies widely between individuals. This study aimed to investigate the factors related to the response to rTMS in PD patients. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the response of 70 idiopathic PD patients who underwent rTMS for 14 consecutive days targeting the supplementary motor area (SMA) in either an open-label trail (n = 31) or a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial (RCT) (n = 39). The motor symptoms of PD patients were assessed by the United Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale Part III (UPDRSIII). Based on previous studies, the UPDRSIII were divided into six symptom clusters: axial dysfunction, resting tremor, rigidity, bradykinesia affecting right and left extremities, and postural tremor. Subsequently, the efficacy of rTMS to different motor symptom clusters and clinical predictors were analyzed in these two trails. Results: After 14 days of treatment, only the total UPDRSIII scores and rigidity scores improved in both the open-label trial and the RCT. The results of multiple linear regression analysis indicated that baseline rigidity scores (β = 0.37, p = 0.047) and RMT (β = 0.30, P = 0.02) positively predicted the improvement of UPDRSIII. Background Previous studies have demonstrated that excitatory repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) can improve the cognitive function of patients with Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Intermittent theta burst stimulation (iTBS) is a novel excitatory rTMS protocol for brain activity stimulation with the ability to induce long-term potentiation-like plasticity and represents a promising treatment for AD. However, the long-term effects of iTBS on cognitive decline and brain structure in patients with AD are unknown.Aims We aimed to explore whether repeating accelerated iTBS every three months could slow down the cognitive decline in patients with AD.Methods In this randomised, assessor-blinded, controlled trial, iTBS was administered to the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) of 42 patients with AD for 14 days every 13 weeks. Measurements included the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), a comprehensive neuropsychological battery, and the grey matter volume (GMV) of the hippocampus. Patients were evaluated at baseline and after follow-up. The longitudinal pipeline of the Computational Anatomy Toolbox for SPM was used to detect significant treatment-related changes over time.Results The iTBS group maintained MoCA scores relative to the control group (t=3.26, p=0.013) and reduced hippocampal atrophy, which was significantly correlated with global degeneration scale changes. The baseline Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) score, apolipoprotein E genotype and Clinical Dementia Rating were indicative of MoCA scores at follow-up. Background Increasing evidence supports the role of microRNAs (miRNAs) in major depressive disorder (MDD), but the pathophysiological mechanism remains elusive.Aims To explore the mechanism of microRNA-451a (miR-451a) in the pathology and behaviours of depression.Methods Abnormal miRNAs such as miR-451a reported previously in the serum of patients with MDD were screened and then confirmed in a mouse model of depression induced by chronic restraint stress (CRS). Eight-week-old male C57BL/6 mice had miR-451a overexpression in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) via adeno-associated virus serotype 9 vectors encoding a pri-mmu-miR-451a-GFP fusion protein followed by behavioural and pathological analyses. Finally, molecular biological experiments were conducted to investigate the potential mechanism of miR-451a against depression.Results The serum levels of miRNA-451a were significantly lower in patients with MDD, with a negative correlation with the Hamilton Depression Scale scores. Additionally, a negative association between serum miR-451a and behavioural despair or anhedonia was observed in CRS mice. Notably, miR-451a expression was significantly downregulated in the mPFC of CRS-susceptible mice. Overexpressing miR-451a in the mPFC reversed the loss of dendritic spines and the depression-like phenotype of CRS mice. Mechanistically, miR-451a could inhibit CRS-induced corticotropin-releasing factor receptor 1 expression via targeting transcription factor 2, subsequently protecting dendritic spine plasticity.Conclusions Together, these results highlighted miR-451a as a candidate biomarker and therapeutic target for MDD.

Objective This study aimed to explore decision‐making impulsivity and its neural mechanisms in patients with episodic migraine without aura (EMoA). Background Previous evidence indicates increased impulsivity and altered reward processing in patients with chronic migraine and medication overuse; however, whether the same holds true for those with EMoA is unclear. Methods Patients newly diagnosed with EMoA (n = 51) and healthy controls (HC, n = 45) were recruited. All participants completed delay discounting task, cognitive assessments, a questionnaire for headache profile, and resting‐state function magnetic resonance imaging scans. Resting‐state functional connectivity (RSFC) between the regions of interest and the entire brain was explored. The spine is the most common site of bone metastases. Many cancer patients will ultimately develop spinal metastatic disease with symptomatic epidural spinal cord compression. At present, the main treatment for cervical spine tumors is surgical resection combined with postoperative radiotherapy. Implant materials for cervical spine anterior column reconstruction need to meet amounts of different properties, such as biocompatibility, bioactivity and the ability to maintain long‐term mechanical strength. The selection of different materials determines the surgical efficacy and prognosis of patients to a certain extent. This article provides an overview of a variety of implant materials used for anterior column reconstruction after cervical spine tumor resection, introduces and analyzes their properties, advantages, disadvantages, derivatives, and applications in clinical practice, and looks forward to the future development of implant materials.

Abstract Background Spinal giant cell tumor (SGCT) is a relatively rare primary tumor. En bloc resection is the preferred surgical procedure for it due to its aggressiveness, meanwhile leading to more complications. We reported the characteristics of perioperative complications and local control of total tumor resection including en bloc resection and piecemeal resection for primary thoracic and lumbar spinal giant cell tumors in a single center over 10 years. Methods This is a retrospective cross-sectional and cohort study. Forty-one consecutive patients with SGCTs who underwent total tumor resection from 2010 to 2020 at our institution and were followed up for at least 24 months were reviewed. Surgery data, complication characteristics and local tumor control were collected and compared by different surgical procedure. Results Forty-one patients were included, consisting of 18 males and 23 females, with a mean age of 34.2 years. Thirty-one had thoracic vertebra lesions, and 10 had lumbar vertebra lesions. Thirty-five patients were primary cases, and 6 patients were recurrent cases. Eighteen patients were treated by total en bloc spondylectomy (TES), 12 patients underwent en bloc resection according to WBB surgical system, and 11 patients underwent piecemeal resection. The average surgical time was 498 min, and the mean estimated blood loss was 2145 ml. A total of 58 complications were recorded, and 30 patients (73.2%) had at least one perioperative complication. All patients were followed up after surgery for at least 2 years. A total of 6 cases had postoperative internal fixation failure, and 4 cases presented local tumor recurrence (9.8%). Conclusions Although the surgical technique is difficult and accompanied by a high rate of perioperative complications, en bloc resection can achieve favorable local control in SGCT. When it is too difficult to complete en bloc resection, thoroughly piecemeal resection without residual is also acceptable, given the relatively low recurrence rate.

Purpose Although Roussouly classification has been widely used in spinal surgery, it was mainly applied to degenerative scoliosis patients and correlational studies concerning adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) are still insufficient. This retrospective study explored the clinical application of Roussouly classification in surgeries and prognosis prediction for AIS. Methods This clinical research selected 101 AIS patients who received surgeries between August 2005 and November 2019. Whole spine standing radiographs were obtained for each patient preoperatively, postoperatively, and at the last follow‐up (>24 months). All patients were classified into “theoretical types” and “current types.” Patients were further divided into mismatch or match groups based on the consistency of their current type and theoretical type. The main parameters include: proximal junctional angle (PJA), pelvic incidence (PI), sacral slope (SS), pelvic tilt (PT), fixed thoracic kyphosis (TK), global TK, fixed lumbar lordosis (LL), global LL, thoracic tilt, proximal thoracic alignment (PTA), lumbar tilt, spino‐sacral angle (SSA), and spinal tilt (ST). Results A total of 47.5% of AIS patients were subject to a preoperative mismatch of Roussouly classification. There was a significant difference in PI‐LL between the preoperative mismatch and match groups (p = 0.008). There was a significant difference in the rate of PI‐LL deformity between the match and mismatch groups with a preoperative mismatch (p = 0.037). A significant difference in thoracic tilt was observed between the postoperative mismatch and match groups (p = 0.019). The preoperative mismatch group has a higher risk of postoperative PI‐LL malformation than match group (OR = 2.303, 95% CI: 1.026, 5.165). When mismatch occurred postoperatively, there were significant differences between groups in the rate of pelvic deformity (p = 0.002) and PI‐LL deformity (p = 0.025) at the last follow‐up. Compared with the postoperative match group, mismatch group had an increased risk of pelvic deformity (OR = 5.029, 95% CI: 1.618, 15.629) and PJK deformity (OR = 3.017, 95% CI: 1.709, 11.375) at the last follow‐up. Short Form‐36 and Scoliosis Research Society 22 score of the match group was significantly higher than that of the mismatch group at the last follow‐up. Conclusion The Roussouly classification mismatch before or after operation leads to increased risks of PI‐LL deformity and pelvis deformity postoperatively or at the follow‐up, which seriously worsens the clinical symptoms and prognosis of patients. Therefore, recovering to the theoretical type in Roussouly classification may effectively improve patients' prognosis.

Purpose Spinal metastases of lung cancer (SMLC) usually have high degree of malignancy and require surgical treatment. However, there are several controversies about the efficacy of surgery. This study aimed to investigate factors predicting prognosis of SMLC after surgery‐based comprehensive treatment. Methods A cohort of 112 cases of SMLC who underwent surgical treatment between 2009 and 2020 were retrospectively reviewed and analyzed. The surgical strategies included total en‐bloc spondylectomy, debulking surgery, palliative decompression, and vertebral augmentation procedures. The patients were regularly followed‐up. Survival analysis was performed, as well as analysis of the patients' neurological recovery, pain relief, and improvement of Karnosky performance score (KPS). Cox regression was used to analyze influencing factors of survival time, and Kaplan–Meier method was performed in survival analysis. Results The cohort included 63 males and 49 females, with an average age of 60.6 ± 10.6 years. Median survival time was 16 months. A total of 86.7% of paralysis patients' neurological function recovered and 83.9% of patients with low KPS score (10–40) improved. “Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus” (CLas) is a notorious agent that causes Citrus Huanglongbing (HLB), which is transmitted by Diaphorina citri (D. citri). We recently found that the acquisition and transmission of CLas by D. citri was facilitated by Citrus tristeza virus (CTV), a widely distributed virus in the field. In this study, we further studied whether different CTV strains manipulate the host preference of D. citri, and whether endosymbionts variation is related to CTV strains in D. citri. The results showed that the non-viruliferous D. citri preferred to select the shoots infected with CTV, without strain differences was observed in the selection. However, the viruliferous D. citri prefered to select the mixed strain that is similar to the field’s. Furthermore, D. citri effectively acquired the CTV within 2–12 h depending on the strains of the virus. The persistence period of CTV in D. citri was longer than 24 days, without reduction of the CTV titers being observed. These results provide a foundation for understanding the transmission mode of D. citri on CTV. During the process of CTV acquisition and persistence, the titers of main endosymbionts in D. citri showed similar variation trend, but their relative titers were different at different time points. The titers of the “Candidatus Profftella armatura” and CTV tended to be positively correlated, and the titers of Wolbachia and “Candidatus Carsonella ruddii” were mostly negatively related with titers of CT31. These results showed the relationship among D. citri, endosymbionts, and CTV and provided useful information for further research on the interactions between D. citri and CLas, which may benefit the development of approaches for the prevention of CLas transmission and control of citrus HLB.

IntroductionMicrobial inoculants can reinvent the value and edible security of cultured sausages. Various studies have demonstrated that starter cultures made up of Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and Staphylococcus xylosus (known as L-S) isolated from traditional fermented foods were used in fermented sausage manufacturing.MethodsThis study evaluated the impact of the mixed inoculation cultures on limiting biogenic amines, nitrite depletion, N-nitrosamine reduction, and quality metrics. Inoculation of sausages with the commercial starter culture (SBM-52) was evaluated for comparison.Results and discussionResults showed that the L-S strains could rapidly decrease the water activity (Aw) and pH of fermented sausages. The ability of the L-S strains to delay lipid oxidation was equivalent to the SBM-52 strains. The non-protein nitrogen (NPN) contents of L-S-inoculated sausages (0.31%) were higher than that of SBM-52-inoculated sausages (0.28%). After the ripening process, the nitrite residues in the L-S sausages were 1.47 mg/kg lower than in the SBM-52 sausages. Compared to the SBM-52 sausages, there was a 4.88 mg/kg reduction in the biogenic amines’ concentrations in L-S sausage, especially for histamine and phenylethylamine concentrations. The N-nitrosamine accumulations of the L-S sausages (3.40 ug/kg) were lower than that of the SBM-52 sausages (3.70 ug/kg), and the NDPhA accumulations of the L-S sausages were 0.64 ug/kg lower than that of the SBM-52 sausages. Due to their significant contributions to nitrite depletion, biogenic amine reduction, and N-nitrosamine depletion in fermented sausages, the L-S strains have the potential to serve as an initial inoculant in the process of manufacturing fermented sausages.

The genus Fragaria consists of a rich diversity of ploidy levels with diploid (2x), tetraploid (4x), pentaploid (5x), hexaploidy (6x), octoploid (8x) and decaploid (10x) species. Only a few studies have explored the origin of diploid and octoploid strawberry, and little is known about the roles of tetraploidy and hexaploidy during the evolution of octoploid strawberry. The chloroplast genome is usually a stable circular genome and is widely used in investigating the evolution and matrilineal identification. Here, we assembled the chloroplast genomes of F. x ananassa cv. ‘Benihoppe’ (8x) using Illumina and HiFi data seperately. The genome alignment results showed that more InDels were located in the chloroplast genomes based on the PacBio HiFi data than Illumina data. We obtain highly accurate chloroplast genomes assembled through GetOrganelle using Illumina reads. We assembled 200 chloroplast genomes including 198 Fragaria (21 species) and 2 Potentilla samples. Analyses of sequence variation, phylogenetic and PCA analyses showed that Fragaria was divided into five groups. F. iinumae, F. nilgerrensis and all octoploid accessions formed Group A, C and E separately. Species native to western China were clustered into Group B. Group D consisted of F. virdis, F. orientalis, F. moschata, and F. vesca. STRUCTURE and haplotype network confirmed that the diploid F. vesca subsp. bracteata was the last maternal donator of octoploid strawberry. The dN/dS ratio estimated for the protein-coding genes revealed that genes involved in ATP synthase and photosystem function were under positive selection. These findings demonstrate the phylogeny of totally 21 Fragaria species and the origin of octoploid species. F. vesca was the last female donator of octoploid, which confirms the hypothesis that the hexaploid species F. moschata may be an evolutionary intermediate between the diploids and wild octoploid species.

As a kind of deviant and unethical behavior in the workplace, unethical pro-family behavior (UPFB) has recently received increased attention. Yet, the question of how to reduce UPFB remains less well understood. From the personal identification perspective, we hypothesize that leader self-sacrificial behavior (LSSB) inhibits employees’ UPFB through the mediation of identification with the leader. We further argue that employees’ perceived insider status enhances this hypothesized relationship. Our analysis of two-wave data collected from 236 Chinese employees indicated that identification with the leader partially mediated the negative relationship between LSSB and UPFB. Moreover, the effect of LSSB on identification with the leader and the aforementioned mediating relationship were stronger for employees who perceived themselves as insiders than outsiders. These findings provide theoretical implications for research on UPFB and LSSB and offer some suggestions that managers can follow to inhibit UPFB. Limitations and future research directions are also discussed.

BackgroundSpinal metastases of lung cancer (SMLC) usually have a high degree of malignancy and require multimodality treatment. Patients with SMLC who experience clinical symptoms (eg, local pain, emerging or potential spinal instability, and progressive neurological dysfunction) require surgical treatment. However, there are discrepancies in the comparison of outcomes between surgical treatment and nonsurgical treatment. ObjectiveThis paper presents the protocol for a study that aims to compare the clinical outcomes of surgical treatment and nonsurgical treatment for SMLC, explore the prognostic factors of SMLC, and establish a survival prediction model based on these prognostic factors. MethodsThis is a prospective cohort study, with an anticipated sample size of 240 patients (120 patients in the surgical group and 120 patients in the nonsurgical group). We will collect baseline data, including demographic, clinical, and radiological information, as well as data from patient-reported questionnaires. Patients will be followed up at 3, 6, 12, and 24 months after treatment, and survival status will be assessed every 3 months. The primary outcome is the overall survival period. Background: Patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) have cognitive dysfunction in many aspects, however, these patients’ decision-making function remains unclear. In this study, the Game of Dice Task (GDT) was used to investigate the function of decision making in patients with OSAS. Methods: 30 participants with moderate to severe OSAS and 27 participants with no or mild OSAS diagnosed by sleep breathing monitor were selected from June 2021 to March 2022. Risky decision making was tested through the GDT with known risk probability. General demographic information and background cognitive functions, such as the overall cognitive functioning and executive functioning, were tested to establish baseline data. Results: There were no significant differences in gender, age, and years of education between the two groups. During the GDT, the moderate to severe OSAS group opted for the safety option at a statistically significant lower rate when compared to the no or mild OSAS group (7.53 ± 4.43 vs. 10.26 ± 4.26, p = 0.022). The moderate to severe OSAS group utilized the higher risk option than the group with no or mild OSAS (10.47 ± 4.43 vs. 7.74 ± 4.26, p = 0.022). The utilization rate of negative feedback in the moderate and severe OSAS group was lower than that in the no or mild OSAS group (7.50, 52.50 vs. 28.57, 100.00, p = 0.001). At the end of the GDT, the moderate and severe OSAS group was more likely to have negative total assets than the patients with no or mild OSAS (−1846.67 ± 2587.20 vs. 300.00 ± 1509.97, p < 0.001). Multiple linear regression analysis shows that there is a negative correlation between the selection of risk options and negative feedback utilization in the GDT. Conclusion: Patients with moderate and severe OSAS displayed impaired decision-making throughout the study. Impaired decision-making is related to executive processes and may be caused by diminished prefrontal cortex functioning. However, the functions of memory, attention, language, abstraction, and orientation are relatively retained.

BackgroundSurgical resection of C2 vertebral tumors is challenging owing to the complex anatomy of C2 vertebrae and the challenges to surgical exposure. Various surgical approaches are available, but some are associated with excessively high risks of complications. An additional challenge is reconstruction of the upper cervical spine following surgery. In the last decade, additive-manufacturing personalized artificial vertebral bodies (AVBs) have been introduced for the repair of large, irregular bony defects; however, their use and efficacy in upper cervical surgery have not been well addressed. Therefore, in this study, we compared instrumented fixation status between patients who underwent conventional titanium mesh reconstruction and those who underwent the same resection but with personalized AVBs.MethodsWe performed a retrospective comparative study and recruited a single-institution cohort of patients with C2 vertebral tumors. Clinical data and imaging findings were reviewed. Through data processing and comparative analysis, we described and discussed the feasibility and safety of surgical resection and the outcomes of hardware implants. The primary outcome of this study was instrumented fixation status.ResultsThe 31 recruited patients were divided into two groups. There were 13 patients in group A who underwent conventional titanium mesh reconstruction and 18 group B patients who underwent personalized AVBs. All patients underwent staged posterior and anterior surgical procedures. In the cohort, 9.7% achieved total en bloc resection of the tumor, while gross total resection was achieved in the remaining 90.3%. The perioperative complication and mortality rates were 45.2% and 6.5%, respectively. The occurrence of perioperative complications was related to the choice of anterior approach (p < 0.05). Group A had a higher complication rate than group B (p < 0.05). Four patients (4/13, 30.8%) developed hardware problems during the follow-up period; however, this rate was marginally higher than that of group B (1/18, 5.6%).ConclusionsTotal resection of C2 vertebral tumors was associated with a high risk of perioperative complications. The staged posterior and retropharyngeal approaches are better surgical strategies for C2 tumors. Personalized AVBs can provide a reliable reconstruction outcome, yet minor pitfalls remain that call for further modification.

Although the negative impact of responsible leadership on employees’ unethical pro-organizational behavior has been documented in the literature, little is known about its underlying processes and boundaries. Drawing on social information processing theory and social learning theory, we built a moderated mediation model to explain why and when unethical pro-organizational behavior could be inhibited by responsible leadership. We conducted a two-phase questionnaire survey to collect data. The empirical results based on the sample of 557 Chinese salespeople showed that customer-oriented perspective taking partially mediated the negative link between responsible leadership and unethical pro-organizational behavior and that leader competence strengthened the direct effects of responsible leadership on customer-oriented perspective taking and unethical pro-organizational behavior as well as the indirect effect of responsible leadership on unethical pro-organizational behavior via customer-oriented perspective taking. These findings enrich the current understanding of how responsible leadership relates to unethical pro-organizational behavior, extend the limited literature on customer-oriented perspective taking, and offer some suggestions that managers can follow to inhibit unethical pro-organizational behavior. Limitations and future research directions are also discussed.

Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are widely used in electrical vehicles (EVs), but safety issues with LIBs still occur frequently. State of charge (SOC) and state of health (SOH) are two crucial parameters for describing the state of LIBs. However, due to inconsistencies that may occur among hundreds to thousands of battery cells connected in series and parallel in the battery pack, these parameters can be difficult to estimate accurately. To address this problem, this paper proposes a joint SOC and SOH estimation method based on the nonlinear state space reconstruction (NSSR) and long short-term memory (LSTM) neural network. An experiment testbed was set up to measure the SOC and SOH of battery packs under different criteria and configurations, and thousands of charging/discharging cycles were recorded. The joint estimation algorithms were validated using testbed data, and the errors for SOC and SOH estimation were found to be within 2.5% and 1.3%, respectively, which is smaller than the errors obtained using traditional Ah-Integral and LSTM-only algorithms.

Although the effects of pro-organizational motives on pro-organizational behaviors [i.e., unethical pro-organizational behavior (UPB) and organizational citizenship behavior (OCB)] and their boundaries have been explored to some extent, extant studies are rather piecemeal and in need of synthesis and extension. Based on prior motivational research on pro-organizational behaviors, we developed a comprehensive contingent model in which moral identity and impression management motives would moderate the links between pro-organizational motives, UPB, and OCB. Adopting a time-lagged design, we collected data from 218 salespeople in an internet technology service company in China. Results showed that pro-organizational motives were positively related to UPB and OCB. Moral identity weakened the impact of pro-organizational motives on UPB but strengthened the influence of pro-organizational motives on OCB. Furthermore, we found that impression management motives strengthened the effects of pro-organizational motives on UPB and OCB, and the interaction of impression management motives and pro-organizational motives was stronger on UPB than on OCB. Theoretical and practical implications, limitations, and future directions are discussed.

The contradiction between transport capacity and passenger demand in urban rail transit is usually prominent during peak hours in some megacities of China, and some passenger flow control measures have been adopted to alleviate passenger congestion. To better save passengers’ travel time when taking passenger flow control measures, this paper proposes an integrated optimization method of bus route adjustment with network-level passenger flow control for urban rail transit, in which the controlled passengers can freely choose to shift to bus or to retain in urban rail transit for pursuing a lower travel cost. With the objectives of minimizing average additional travel time for all affected passengers and maximizing the operating revenue of urban rail transit, an integer non-linear programming model is formulated to determine the inbound passenger volumes and bus adjustment schemes. To solve this proposed model effectively, a multi-objective particle swarm optimization based on dual-population co-evolution is designed. Finally, three sets of numerical experiments, including an integrated optimization experiment and two independent optimization experiments of passenger flow control, are implemented to demonstrate the feasibility and benefits of the proposed method.

Abstract Background Schizotypal traits are considered as inheritable traits and the endophenotype for schizophrenia. A common variant in the NOTCH4 gene, rs204993, has been linked with schizophrenia, but the neural underpinnings are largely unknown. Methods In present study, we compared the differences of brain functions between different genotypes of rs204993 and its relationship with schizotypal traits among 402 Chinese Han healthy volunteers. The brain function was evaluated with functional connectivity strength (FCS) using the resting-state functional magnetic resonance image(rs-fMRI). The schizotypal traits were measured by the schizotypal personality questionnaire (SPQ). Results Our results showed that carriers with the AA genotype showed reduced FCS in the left occipital cortex when compared with carriers with the AG and GG genotypes, and the carriers with the AG genotype showed reduced FCS in the left occipital cortex when compared with carriers with the GG genotype. The FCS values in the left occipital lobe were negatively associated with the SPQ scores and its subscale scores within the carriers with the GG genotype, but not within the carriers with AA or AG genotype. Conclusion Our results suggested that the common variant in the NOTCH4 gene, rs204993, modulates the function of the occipital cortex, which may contribute to schizotypal traits. These findings provide insight for genetic effects on schizotypal traits and its potential neural substrate.

REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD) is closely associated with Parkinson's disease (PD), however, the influence of dopaminergic replacement therapy (DRT) on the clinical course of RBD in PD remains less understood. The objective of our study is to investigate how DRTs modify the evolution of RBD in a longitudinal cohort study of initially de novo PD patients. Four hundred and five drug-naive patients with early-stage PD were included. RBD symptoms were assessed using the 10-item RBD Screening Questionnaire (RBDSQ) at baseline and during the 5-year follow-up. A generalized estimating equation was used to examine predictors of the evolution of RBD symptoms. For patients without baseline pRBD, patients on levodopa treatment showed a greater increase in RBDSQ scores than those not on levodopa treatment, and the increase in RBDSQ scores was significantly correlated with the levodopa-LEDD. Moreover, the changes in RBDSQ scores at a given post-baseline visit were significantly associated with the use of levodopa (OR = 1.875, p = 0.008) and the combined use of levodopa and DA (OR = 2.188, p = 0.012), as well as the levodopa-LEDD (OR = 1.001, p = 0.005) at that visit. The use of DA alone or the DA-LEDD was not a significant predictor of changes in RBDSQ scores. Similarly, a conversion from pRBD negative to pRBD positive was significantly associated with levodopa-LEDD (OR = 1.001, p = 0.014) but not DA-LEDD. Together, these finding implicated that the use of levodopa may act as a contributing factor to the increasing prevalence of RBD after the onset of PD, suggesting different mechanisms underlying prodromal RBD and late-onset RBD.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a severe neurodegenerative disease, which mainly manifests as memory and progressive cognitive impairment. At present, there is no method to prevent the progression of AD or cure it, and effective intervention methods are urgently needed. Network-targeted intermittent theta burst stimulation (iTBS) may be effective in alleviating the cognitive symptoms of patients with mild AD. The abnormal function of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) within executive control network (ECN) may be the pathogenesis of AD. Here, we verify the abnormality of the ECN in the native AD data set, and build the relevant brain network. In addition, we also recruited AD patients to verify the clinical effects of DLPFC-targeted intervention, and explor the neuro-mechanism. Sixty clinically diagnosed AD patients and 62 normal controls were recruited to explore the ECN abnormalities. In addition, the researchers recruited 20 AD patients to explore the efficacy of 14-session iTBS treatments for targeted DLPFC interventions. Functional magnetic resonance imaging and neuropsychological assessment of resting state were performed before and after the intervention. Calculate the changes in the functional connectivity of related brain regions in the ECN, as well as the correlation between the baseline functional connectivity and the clinical scoring scale, to clarify the mechanism of the response of iTBS treatment to treatment. Our results showed that compared with normal control samples, the brain function connection between the left DLPFC and the left IPL within the ECN of AD patients was significantly enhanced (t = 2.687, p = 0.008, FDR-corrected p = 0.045). And we found that iTBS stimulation significantly reduced the functional magnetic resonance imaging signal between the left DLPFC and the left IPL in the ECN (t = 4.271, p < 0.001, FDR-corrected p = 0.006), and it was related to the improvement of the patient’s clinical symptoms (r = −0.470, p = 0.042). This work provides new insights for targeted brain area interventions. By targeted adjusting the functional connection of ECN to improve the clinical symptoms and cognitive function of AD patients.

Abstract Objective We aimed to examine the illness perception characteristics of patients with myasthenia gravis and analyze the associated factors. Methods A general information questionnaire, Illness Perception Questionnaire, and Simplified Coping Style Questionnaire were used to survey 90 patients with myasthenia gravis. One‐way analysis of variance and multivariate linear regression were used for statistical analysis. Results The timeline (acute/chronic), consequence, and emotional representation scores of patients with myasthenia gravis were 18.31 ± 4.47, 18.58 ± 3.57, and 20.80 ± 4.56, respectively. Multivariate stepwise linear regression analysis showed that marital status, disease duration, educational level, disease type, and coping style are factors associated with illness perception in patients with myasthenia gravis. Conclusion Patients who have myasthenia gravis have a negative illness perception. Medical professionals should provide targeted intervention measures based on the factors associated with illness perception.

Zearalenone(ZEA) is a kind of mycotoxin widely existing in nature, its toxic effects can lead to the reproductive disorders in humans and animals. The aim of this study was to investigate the mechanism of scutellarin against ovarian granulosa cell(GCs) injury induced by ZEA based on network pharmacology, molecular docking method. The results show that 293 drug targets of scutellarin were found from PhamMapper database, and 583 disease targets were selected from Genecards database. Finally, 57 scutellarin targets were obtained for the repair of GCs injury with gene intersection. The protein-protein interaction(PPI), gene ontology(GO) and kyoto encyclopedia of genes and genomes(KEGG) analysis indicated that MAPK signaling pathway was most likely activated by scutellarin. Scutellarin with JNK or Caspase-3 had minimal and negative free binding energy in molecular docking analysis, indicating that they might be the acting targets of scutellarin. Cell viability was significantly decreased in ZEA treated cells. However, GCs viability, the level of estradiol(E2) and progesterone(P4) were significantly increased with addition of scutellarin to ZEA treated cells. Western blot analysis showed that scutellarin significantly reduced the expression of JNK, c-jun and Cleaved-caspasee-3 in GCs compared with ZEA treatment. In conclusion, scutellarin could alleviate the ovarian GCs injury by down-regulating the expression of JNK, c-jun and Cleaved-caspase-3 through the activation of MAPK/JNK signaling pathway. Our results will provide a theoretical foundation for the treatment of reproductive disorders with scutellarin.

BackgroundBecause of the superficial and infiltrative spreading patterns of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC), an accurate assessment of tumor extent is challenging using imaging-based clinical staging. Radiomics features extracted from pretreatment computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging have shown promise in identifying tumor characteristics. Accurate staging is essential for planning cancer treatment, especially for deciding whether to offer surgery or radiotherapy (chemotherapy) in patients with locally advanced ESCC. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the predictive potential of contrast-enhanced CT-based radiomics as a non-invasive approach for estimating pathological tumor extent in ESCC patients.MethodsPatients who underwent esophagectomy between October 2011 and September 2017 were retrospectively studied and included 116 patients with pathologically confirmed ESCC. Contrast-enhanced CT from the neck to the abdomen was performed in all patients during the 2 weeks before the operation. Radiomics features were extracted from segmentations, which were contoured by radiologists. Cluster analysis was performed to obtain clusters with similar radiomics characteristics, and chi-squared tests were used to assess differences in clinicopathological features and survival among clusters. Furthermore, a least absolute shrinkage and selection operator was performed to select radiomics features and construct a radiomics model. Receiver operating characteristic analysis was used to evaluate the predictive ability of the radiomics signatures.ResultsAll 116 ESCC patients were divided into two groups according to the cluster analysis. The chi-squared test showed that cluster-based radiomics features were significantly correlated with T stage (p = 0.0254) and tumor length (p = 0.0002). Furthermore, CT radiomics signatures exhibited favorable predictive performance for T stage (area under the curve [AUC] = 0.86, sensitivity = 0.77, and specificity = 0.87) and tumor length (AUC = 0.95, sensitivity = 0.92, and specificity = 0.91).ConclusionsCT contrast radiomics is a simple and non-invasive method that shows promise for predicting pathological T stage and tumor length preoperatively in ESCC patients and may aid in the accurate assessments of patients in combination with the existing examinations.

White matter hyperintensities (WMHs) are commonly observed in older adults and are associated with cognitive impairment. Although previous studies have found abnormal functional connectivities in patients with WMHs based on static functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), the topological properties in the context of brain dynamics remain relatively unexplored. Herein, we explored disrupted dynamic topological properties of functional network connectivity in patients with WMHs and its relationship with cognitive impairment. We included 36 healthy controls (HC) and 104 patients with mild WMHs (n = 39), moderate WMHs (n = 37), and severe (n = 28) WMHs. The fMRI data of all participants were analyzed using Anatomical Automatic Labeling (AAL) and a sliding-window approach to generate dynamic functional connectivity matrics. Then, graph theory methods were applied to calculate the topological properties. Comprehensive neuropsychological scales were used to assess cognitive functions. Relationships between cognitive functions and abnormal dynamic topological properties were evaluated by Pearson’s correlation. We found that the patients with WMHs had higher temporal variability in regional properties, including betweenness centrality, nodal efficiencies, and nodal clustering coefficient. Furthermore, we found that the degree of centrality was related to executive function and memory, and the local coefficient correlated to executive function. Our results indicate that patients with WMHs have higher temporal variabilities in regional properties and are associated with executive and memory function.

Background: White matter hyperintensities (WMHs) are a common occurrence with aging and are associated with cognitive impairment. However, the neurobiological mechanisms of WMHs remain poorly understood. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is a prominent tool that helps in non-invasive examinations and is increasingly used to diagnose neuropsychiatric diseases. Degree centrality (DC) is a common and reliable index in fMRI, which counts the number of direct connections for a given voxel in a network and reflects the functional connectivity within brain networks. We explored the underlying mechanism of cognitive impairment in WMHs from the perspective of DC.Methods: A total of 104 patients with WMHs and 37 matched healthy controls (HCs) were enrolled in the current study. All participants underwent individual and overall cognitive function tests and resting-state fMRI (rs-fMRI). WMHs were divided into three groups (39 mild WMHs, 37 moderate WMHs, and 28 severe WMHs) according to their Fazekas scores, and the abnormal DC values in the WMHs and HCs groups were analyzed.Results: There was a significant difference in the right inferior frontal orbital gyrus and left superior parietal gyrus between the WMHs and HCs groups. The functional connectivity between the right inferior frontal orbital gyrus and left inferior temporal gyrus, left superior parietal gyrus, and left parietal inferior gyrus was also different in the WMHs group.Conclusion: The change in DC value may be one of the underlying mechanisms of cognitive impairment in individuals with WMHs, which provides us with a new approach to delaying cognitive impairment in WMHs.

Strawberries are one of the most economically important berry fruits worldwide and exhibit colours ranging from white to dark red, providing a rich genetic resource for strawberry quality improvement. In the present study, we conducted transcriptome analyses of three strawberry cultivars, namely, ‘Benihoppe’, ‘Xiaobai’, and ‘Snow White’, and compared their gene expression profiles. Among the high-quality sequences, 5,049 and 53,200 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were obtained when comparing the diploid and octoploid strawberry genomes and analysed to identify anthocyanin-related candidate genes. Sixty-five DEGs in the diploid genome (transcriptome data compared to the diploid strawberry genome) and 317 DEGs in the octoploid genome (transcriptome data compared to the octoploid strawberry genome) were identified among the three cultivars. Among these DEGs, 19 and 70 anthocyanin pathway genes, six and 42 sugar pathway genes, 23 and 101 hormone pathway genes, and 17 and 104 transcription factors in the diploid and octoploid genomes, respectively, correlated positively or negatively with the anthocyanin accumulation observed among the three cultivars. Real-time qPCR analysis of nine candidate genes showed a good correlation with the transcriptome data. For example, the expression of PAL was higher in ‘Benihoppe’ and ‘Xiaobai’ than in ‘Snow White’, consistent with the RNA-seq data. Thus, the RNA-seq data and candidate DEGs identified in the present study provide a sound basis for further studies of strawberry fruit colour formation.

Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are characterized by attenuated pulmonary function and are frequently reported with cognitive impairments, especially memory impairments. The mechanism underlying the memory impairments still remains unclear. We applied resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (RS-fMRI) to compare the brain local activities with static and dynamic amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (sALFF, dALFF) among patients with COPD (n = 32) and healthy controls (HC, n = 30). Compared with HC, COPD patients exhibited decreased sALFF in the right basal ganglia and increased dALFF in the bilateral parahippocampal/hippocampal gyrus. The reduced the left basal ganglia was associated with lower oxygen partial pressure. Besides, the increased dALFF in the left hippocampal/parahippocampal cortex was associated with poor semantic-memory performance and the increased dALFF in the left hippocampal/parahippocampal cortex was associated the forced vital capacity. The present study revealed the abnormal static and dynamic local-neural activities in the basal ganglia and parahippocampal/hippocampal cortex in COPD patient and its relationship with poor lung function and semantic-memory impairments.

A long-term high-fat diet (HFD) can cause OA through biomechanical and metabolic factors, which may be related to changes in the gut microbiota. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the roles of L. paracasei subsp. paracasei M5 (M5) and CS in the prevention of OA caused by HFD and the relationship between the gut microbiota and OA. The results showed that mice receiving an HFD had significantly increased body weight and exhibited characteristics associated with OA. Both M5 and CS effectively prevented the destruction of articular cartilage and the degradation of type II collagen caused by HFD. The level of serum and infrapatellar fat pad (IPFP) leptin was also significantly decreased. A strong predictive relationship was observed between the abundance of Ruminococcaceae_UCG-014, Streptococcus, Bacteroides and OA. In summary, we demonstrated that M5 protected against HFD-induced OA, which was probably associated with modification of the gut microbiota.

The current study aimed to confirm whether probable rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder (pRBD) is associated with a specific pattern of striatal dopamine depletion in an international, multicenter, prospective cohort of patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD). Two hundred and seventy de novo, drug-naïve patients with PD underwent dopamine transporter (DAT) single photon emission computed tomography with 123I-FP-CIT at baseline and 1, 2, and 4 years after the initial scan. The diagnosis of pRBD was based on the 10-item RBD Screening Questionnaire. Striatal DAT binding levels and their rates of decline were compared between patients with pRBD and those without. At baseline, patients in the PD-pRBD+ group showed lower striatal DAT binding in the caudate (which was more pronounced in the less-affected hemisphere) and in the putamen. During the 4-year follow-up, patients in the PD-pRBD+ group consistently exhibited greater DAT loss than patients in the PD-pRBD− group with comparable disease duration in all four striatal subregions. These patients also exhibited a more rapid decrease in DAT binding in the caudate and a less prominent interhemispheric asymmetry in the putamen. The distinct pattern of striatal DAT depletion may contribute to a more malignant phenotype of PD associated with RBD, specifically faster progression of motor symptoms.

Background: A lack of a sufficiently large sample at single sites causes poor generalizability in automatic diagnosis classification of heterogeneous psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia based on brain imaging scans. Advanced deep learning methods may be capable of learning subtle hidden patterns from high dimensional imaging data, overcome potential site-related variation, and achieve reproducible cross-site classification. However, deep learning-based cross-site transfer classification, despite less imaging site-specificity and more generalizability of diagnostic models, has not been investigated in schizophrenia. Methods: A large multi-site functional MRI sample (n = 734, including 357 schizophrenic patients from seven imaging resources) was collected, and a deep discriminant autoencoder network, aimed at learning imaging site-shared functional connectivity features, was developed to discriminate schizophrenic individuals from healthy controls. Findings: Accuracies of approximately 85·0% and 81·0% were obtained in multi-site pooling classification and leave-site-out transfer classification, respectively. The learned functional connectivity features revealed dysregulation of the cortical-striatal-cerebellar circuit in schizophrenia, and the most discriminating functional connections were primarily located within and across the default, salience, and control networks. Interpretation: The findings imply that dysfunctional integration of the cortical-striatal-cerebellar circuit across the default, salience, and control networks may play an important role in the “disconnectivity” model underlying the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. The proposed discriminant deep learning method may be capable of learning reliable connectome patterns and help in understanding the pathophysiology and achieving accurate prediction of schizophrenia across multiple independent imaging sites. Introduction: Problems with attention are common in patients with cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD). The normal human brain exhibits functional and structural asymmetry. However, it is unknown whether there is lateralization of attention in patients with CSVD.Objective: This study aims to investigate attention separately in both cerebral hemispheres in patients with CSVD using the computer-based Lateralized Attention Network Test—Revised (LANT-R).Methods: The total number of subjects included was 58, which includes the CSVD (N = 35) and healthy control (HC, N = 23) groups. All subjects completed the LANT-R paradigm and neuropsychological background tests.Results: The results indicate that there is an left hemisphere (LH) lateralization in orienting network efficiency in the HC group. However, this lateralization was not apparent in the CSVD group. Furthermore, the difference between groups was significant (interaction P = 0.02). In addition, the scores of subjects in the CSVD group are lower in several cognitive domains, including attention function, memory function, information processing speed, and executive function, compared with the controls.Conclusion: Patients with CSVD change in the lateralization of attention compared with the normal elderly. The decrease in attention in patients with CSVD might be caused by the reduced ability of selecting useful information in the LH.

Individuals with autism-like traits (ALT) belong to a subclinical group with similar social deficits as autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Their main social deficits include atypical eye contact and difficulty in understanding facial expressions, both of which are associated with an abnormality of the right posterior superior temporal sulcus (rpSTS). It is still undetermined whether it is possible to improve the social function of ALT individuals through noninvasive neural modulation. To this end, we randomly assigned ALT individuals into the real (n=16) and sham (n=16) stimulation groups. All subjects received five consecutive days of intermittent theta burst stimulation (iTBS) on the rpSTS. Eye tracking data and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data were acquired on the first and sixth days. The real group showed significant improvement in emotion recognition accuracy after iTBS, but the change was not significantly larger than that in the sham group. Resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) between the rpSTS and the left cerebellum significantly decreased in the real group than the sham group after iTBS. At baseline, rsFC in the left cerebellum was negatively correlated with emotion recognition accuracy. Our findings indicated that iTBS of the rpSTS could improve emotion perception of ALT individuals by modulating associated neural networks. This stimulation protocol could be a vital therapeutic strategy for the treatment of ASD.
