3. Evidence-based marine protected area planning for a highly mobile endangered marine vertebrate

Abstract

Aim: Tracking the dispersal patterns and habitat use of migratory species is necessary to delineate optimal areas for protection, with large sample sizes being more representative of the population. Here, we examine the dispersal patterns of a key Mediterranean loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) breeding population to identify priority foraging sites for protection. Location: Zakynthos Island, Greece and the wider Mediterranean. Method: We examined the dispersal patterns and foraging sites of 75 adult loggerheads (n = 38 males and 37 females) tracked from the breeding area of Zakynthos Island (Greece) from 2004 to 2011. We then combined our data with published sea turtle literature to identify key foraging sites for protection. Results: While both males and females exhibited similar dispersal patterns, about 25% males remained < 100 km of Zakynthos, whereas all females (except one) migrated > 200 km. Integration of our data with the wider literature isolated 10 core sites in proximity to existing protected areas, which could potentially protect 64% of the Zakynthos population, while five sites support individuals from at least 10 other loggerhead breeding populations. Main conclusions: Due to the widespread availability of neritic foraging grounds across the Mediterranean, sea turtles from Zakynthos exhibit disparate dispersal patterns. However, protecting only a few objectively defined important sites can encompass a large proportion of the foraging areas used and hence have considerable conservation benefit. © 2013 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.

Abstract

Climate and land use changes are major threats to biodiversity. To preserve biodiversity, networks of protected areas have been established worldwide, like the Natura 2000 network across the European Union (EU). Currently, this reserve network consists of more than 26000 sites covering more than 17% of EU terrestrial territory. Its efficiency to mitigate the detrimental effects of land use and climate change remains an open research question. Here, we examined the potential current and future geographical ranges of four birds of prey under scenarios of both land use and climate changes. By using graph theory, we examined how the current Natura 2000 network will perform in regard to the conservation of these species. This approach determines the importance of a site in regard to the total network and its connectivity. We found that sites becoming unsuitable due to climate change are not a random sample of the network, but are less connected and contribute less to the overall connectivity than the average site and thus their loss does not disrupt the full network. Hence, the connectivity of the remaining network changed only slightly from present day conditions. Our findings highlight the need to establish species-specific management plans with flexible conservation strategies ensuring protection under potential future range expansions. Aquila pomarina is predicted to disappear from the southern part of its range and to become restricted to northeastern Europe. Gyps fulvus, Aquila chrysaetos, and Neophron percnopterus are predicted to locally lose some suitable sites; hence, some isolated small populations may become extinct. However, their geographical range and metapopulation structure will remain relatively unaffected throughout Europe. These species would benefit more from an improved habitat quality and management of the existing network of protected areas than from increased connectivity or assisted migration.

Abstract

Conservation measures applied to sea turtle nesting sites have a beneficial effect on population trends and dynamics. Such measures aim to protect nesting females, increase nesting success (proportion of female emergences resulting in nests) and/or to improve hatching and hatchling emergence success. However, taking into account financial and time constrains it is important to identify those measures that have the most positive impact on the sea turtle population. The aim of this paper is to assess and compare the relative importance of the different factors that may influence the efficiency of conservation actions and to investigate which factors, those associated with decreased nesting success, or others leading to higher embryonic and hatchling mortality have a higher impact on overall hatchling recruitment. We developed a model that simulates the nesting activity of sea turtles. For model parameterization, we used data collected from nesting sites of the loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) in the Eastern Mediterranean. We conducted a series of simulations by simultaneously changing model input parameters. The results of the model illustrate that an increase in hatchling recruitment success (i.e., hatching and hatchling emergence success) would have a more positive effect on overall hatchling production than a similar in nesting success. Our analysis further suggests that changes in hatchling recruitment success even at a single site, could have an important impact on overall hatchling production of the rookery.

23. Ecophysiological adaptations of Asphodelus aestivus to mediterranean climate periodicity: Water relations and energetic status

Abstract

During the course of a year, we studied the water and metabolic status of Asphodelus aestivus, a native geophyte of East Mediterranean, dominant in areas degraded by overgrazing and fire. The species proved to be very efficient in storing water during the long summer drought. At soil water content values around zero, in the upper part of the soil profile (10-20 cm in depth), the roots remained hydrated and turgid; their relative water content was >60% and water potential > -1.6 MPa. Accumulation of proline during winter in leaves (ca 5 mg g-1 dry weight) and tubers (though at significantly lower levels, ca 1.5 mg g-1) might be taken as evidence of a winter cold stress response. Proline accumulation in tubers, under summer drought, was similar to that in winter. Maximal values of caloric content were recorded in expanding leaves (ca 5600 cal g-1 dry weight) and minimal before leaf senescence. In contrast, root caloric content remained fairly constant for most of the year (ca 4550 cal g-1 dry weight) in spite of drastic changes in the concentrations of soluble sugars, starch and lipids. Long before senescence, photosynthetic products were translocated to the below ground system, where they were stored. Drastic changes of the storage compounds were observed before emergence of the flowering stalk, far greater in magnitude than those before leaf emergence. The below ground part of the species was found to be less susceptible to climatic stress and to constitute an energetically rather stable system. The physiological processes of the species were well synchronised to the fluctuations of the Mediterranean climate.

28. THE EFFECTS OF GRAZING AND FIRE ON DEGRADATION PROCESSES OF MEDITERRANEAN ECOSYSTEMS

Abstract

The effects of grazing and fire were studied in lowland pastures at Thessaly, Central Greece. Five community types, which occur in an area of 1250 ha, experience different grazing pressure and fire frequencies. Comparing the vegetation characteristics of the five studied communities, we found that grazing increased the cover of undesirable species, while frequent fires resulted in a drastic decrease of the woody species cover. The studied communities were ordinated by Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA). Grazing pressure conditions the data distribution along the first two axes, while frequency of fires conditions the data distribution along the first axis. A degradation model and three possible scenarios of change are proposed. This model shows that the divergence of the final degraded stages depends on the intensity of the main human impacts, although the initial stage and the climatic and soil conditions are the same.

30. Landscape structure and habitat composition in reservoirs, lakes, and rivers

Abstract

AbstractWe compared reservoirs that were proposed to be included in the Greek Natura 2000 network of protected sites, with natural lakes and rivers from the same network. We analyzed landscape spatial pattern, habitat type composition, and spatial pattern of human activities. We found that the landscapes of reservoirs are distinct from those of rivers and natural lakes. More specifically, the reservoir water bodies were characterized by a more complex shape than the water bodies of rivers and lakes. Furthermore, based upon the landscape spatial pattern of the entire protected area, we could clearly discriminate among the three aquatic ecosystem types. It was also possible to discriminate these ecosystem types based upon the habitat composition of the surrounding landscape. The habitat composition among the different sites showed low similarity. Human presence in all sites was documented, but its spatial pattern was not differentiated among the three aquatic ecosystem types. The results highlight the ambiguous nature of reservoirs; thus, we advocate the need for specific management measures for reservoirs that will accomplish both their intended purpose and the conservation of habitat composition and landscape structure.

31. Altitudinal variation in total lipid and soluble sugar content in herbaceous plants on Mount Olympus (Greece)

Abstract

Lipid and soluble sugar concentrations of leaves and stems of 168 herbaceous species, growing along an altitudinal gradient of Mount Olympus are presented. It was shown that the concentration of total lipids increased with increasing altitude, while the content of total soluble sugars decreased. The line fitting data concerning lipid and soluble sugar calorific values runs parallel to that fitting data concerning calorific content of ash free dry weight. © 1987 Dr W. Junk Publishers.
