Although the star formation process has been studied for decades, many important aspects of the physics involved remain unsolved. Recent advancement of instrumentation in the infrared, far-infrared and sub-millimetre wavelength regimes have contributed to a significantly improved understanding of processes in the interstellar medium (ISM) leading to star formation. The future of research on the ISM and star formation looks exciting with instruments like the JWST, ALMA, etc., already contributing to the topic by gathering high-resolution high-sensitivity data and with several larger ground- and space-bound facilities either being planned or constructed. India has a sizable number of astronomers engaged in research on topics related to the ISM and star formation. In this white paper invited by the Astronomical Society of India to prepare a vision document for Indian astronomy, we review the Indian contributions to the global understanding of the star formation process and suggest areas that require focused efforts both in creating observing facilities and in theoretical front in India, in order to improve the impact of our research in the coming decades., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Journal of Astrophysics and Astronomy Special Issue: Indian Astronomy in the Global Context: A compendium of white papers submitted towards the Astronomical Society of India Vision Document (2024)

Young star-forming regions in massive environments are ideal test beds to study the influence of surroundings on the evolution of disks around low-mass stars. We explore two distant young clusters, IC 1848-East and West located in the massive W5 complex. These clusters are unique due to their similar (distance, age, and extinction) yet distinct (stellar density and FUV radiation fields) physical properties. We use deep multi-band photometry in optical, near-IR, and mid-IR wavelengths complete down to the substellar limit in at least five bands. We trace the spectral energy distribution of the sources to identify the young pre-main sequence members in the region and derive their physical parameters. The disk fraction for the East and West clusters down to 0.1 M$_\odot$ was found to be $\sim$27$\pm$2% (N$_{disk}$=184, N$_{diskless}$=492) and $\sim$17$\pm$1% (N$_{disk}$=173, N$_{diskless}$=814), respectively. While no spatial variation in the disk fraction is observed, these values are lower than those in other nearby young clusters. Investigating the cause of this decrease, we find a correlation with the intense feedback from massive stars throughout the cluster area. We also identified the disk sources undergoing accretion and observed the mass accretion rates to exhibit a positive linear relationship with the stellar host mass and an inverse relationship with stellar age. Our findings suggest that the environment significantly influences the dissipation of disks in both clusters. We present a multi-wavelength analysis of the young star cluster Berkeley 59 (Be 59) based on the $Gaia$ data and deep infrared (IR) observations with the 3.58-m Telescopio Nazionale Galileo and $Spitzer$ space telescope. The mean proper motion of the cluster is found to be $\mu$$_\alpha$cos$\delta$ $\sim$ -0.63 mas yr$^{-1}$ and $\mu$$_\delta$ $\sim$ -1.83 mas yr$^{-1}$ and the kinematic distance of the cluster, $\sim$ 1 kpc, is in agreement with previous photometric studies. Present data is the deepest available near-IR observations for the cluster so far and reached below 0.03 M$_\odot$. The mass function of the cluster region is calculated using the statistically cleaned color-magnitude diagram and is similar to the Salpeter value for the member stars above 0.4 M$_\odot$. In contrast, the slope becomes shallower ($\Gamma$ $\sim$ 0.01 $\pm$ 0.18) in the mass range 0.04 - 0.4 M$_\odot$, comparable to other nearby clusters. The spatial distribution of young brown dwarfs (BDs) and stellar candidates shows a non-homogeneous distribution. This suggests that the radiation feedback from massive stars may be a prominent factor contributing to the BD population in the cluster Be 59. We also estimated the star-to-BD ratio for the cluster, which is found to be $\sim$ 3.6. The Kolomogorov-Smirnov test shows that stellar and BD populations significantly differ, and stellar candidates are near the cluster center compared to the BDs, suggesting mass segregation in the cluster toward the substellar mass regime., Comment: 18 pages, 11 Figures, accepted for the publication in the AJ

Using starlight polarization, we present the properties of foreground dust towards cluster NGC 7380 embedded in H{\sc ii} region Sh 2-142. Observations of starlight polarization are carried out in four filters using an imaging polarimeter equipped with a 104-cm ARIES telescope. Polarization vectors of stars are aligned along the Galactic magnetic field. Towards the east and southeast regions, the dust structure appears much denser than in other regions (inferred from extinction contours and colour composite image) and is also reflected in polarization distribution. We find that the polarization degree and extinction tend to increase with distance and indication for the presence of a dust layer at a distance of around 1.2 $kpc$. We have identified eight potential candidates exhibiting intrinsic polarization by employing three distinct criteria to distinguish between stars of intrinsic polarization and interstellar polarized stars. For interstellar polarized stars, we find that the maximum polarization degree increases with the color excess and has a strong scatter, with the mean value of 1.71$\pm$0.57$\%$. The peak wavelength spans $0.40-0.88\mu$m with the mean value of 0.56$\pm$0.07 $\mu m$, suggesting similar grain sizes in the region as the average diffuse interstellar medium. The polarization efficiency is also found to decrease with visual extinction as $P_{max}/A_{V}\propto A_{V}^{-0.61}$. We present a multi-wavelength analysis of the star cluster NGC 2316 and its surroundings. We estimated the physical parameters of the NGC 2316 cluster, including its shape (elongated), size (Rcluster = 0.4 pc), distance (1.3 +/- 0.3 kpc), and minimum reddening (AV = 1.55 mag). We discovered two massive stars (B2.0V-B1.5V, age ~12 Myr) embedded (AV = 4 mag) within this cluster. The cluster region still forms young stars even though the most massive star was born ~12 Myr ago. We also found evidence of positive feedback from these massive stars. We identified a cold gas/dust lane extending westward from the cluster. The western end of the dust lane seems to favor low-mass star formation, whereas the cluster's end favors bit massive star formation, which seems to have started earlier than the western end. We found an elongated molecular cloud in this region, characterized by numerous filamentary structures. The morphology of the filaments, along with position-velocity (pv) maps, velocity dispersion maps, channel maps, etc., indicate a coalescence of filaments and a potential longitudinal flow of matter toward the cluster through the western end of the gas/dust lane. This entire region seems to be a Hub-filamentary system (HFS), in which the NGC 2316 cluster is probably the hub and the dark lane is the main filamentary structure. The 4K$\times$4K CCD Imager is the first light instrument for the 3.6m Devasthal Optical Telescope and is producing broad-band imaging observations of many Galactic and extra-galactic sources since 2015-2016. Capabilities of the CCD Imager are demonstrated recently through several publications using the well-calibrated multi-band deep photometric results as expected from other similar facilities globally. In this article, we summarize some of the recent up-gradations made to improve the Imager, i.e., mounting the new filter wheel casing, replacing stray light baffles and discussing the fringe pattern corrections in redder filters. We present a comprehensive analysis of the Galactic mid-infrared (MIR) bubble [HKS2019] E70 (E70) by adopting a multi-wavelength approach to understand the physical environment and star formation scenario around it. We identified a small (radius ~1.7 pc) stellar clustering inside the E70 bubble and its distance is estimated as 3.26 +/- 0.45 kpc. This cluster is embedded in the molecular cloud and hosts massive stars as well as young stellar objects (YSOs), suggesting active star formation in the region. The spectral type of the brightest star 'M1' of the E70 cluster is estimated as O9V and a circular ring/shell of gas and dust is found around it. The diffuse radio emission inside this ring/shell, the excess pressure exerted by the massive star 'M1' at the YSOs core, and the distribution of photo-dissociation regions (PDRs), a Class I YSO, and two ultra-compact (UC) H II regions on the rim of this ring/shell, clearly suggest positive feedback of the massive star 'M1' in the region. We also found a low-density shell-like structure in 12 CO(J=1-0) molecular emission along the perimeter of the E70 bubble. The velocity structure of the 12 CO emission suggests that the feedback from the massive star appears to have expelled the molecular material and subsequent swept-up material is what appears as the E70 bubble., Comment: 24 pages, 16 Figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ

We present here the results of eight years of our near-simultaneous optical/near-infrared spectro-photometric monitoring of bonafide FUor candidate `V2493 Cyg' starting from 2013 September to 2021 June. During our optical monitoring period (between October 16, 2015 and December 30, 2019), the V2493 Cyg is slowly dimming with an average dimming rate of $\sim$26.6 $\pm$ 5.6 mmag/yr in V band. Our optical photometric colors show a significant reddening of the source post the second outburst pointing towards a gradual expansion of the emitting region post the second outburst. The mid infra-red colors, on the contrary, exhibits a blueing trend which can be attributed to the brightening of the disc due to the outburst. Our spectroscopic monitoring shows a dramatic variation of the H$\alpha$ line as it transitioned from absorption feature to the emission feature and back. Such transition can possibly be explained by the variation in the wind structure in combination with accretion. Combining our time evolution spectra of the Ca II infra-red triplet lines with the previously published spectra of V2493 Cyg, we find that the accretion region has stabilised compared to the early days of the outburst. We present the results from our deep optical photometric observations of Bochum 2 (Boc2) star cluster obtained using the $1.3$m Devasthal Fast Optical Telescope along with archival photometric data from Pan-STARRS2/2MASS/UKIDSS surveys. We also used high-quality parallax and proper motion data from the $Gaia$ Data Release 3. We found that the Boc2 cluster has a small size ($\sim$1.1 pc) and circular morphology. Using $Gaia$ parallax of member stars and isochrone fitting method, the distance of this cluster is estimated as $3.8\pm0.4$ kpc. We have found that this cluster holds young ($\sim5$ Myr) and massive (O$7-$O$9$) stars as well as an older population of low mass stars. We found that the massive stars have formed in the inner region of the Boc2 cluster in a recent epoch of star formation. We have derived mass function slope ($\Gamma$) in the cluster region as $-2.42\pm0.13$ in the mass range $\sim0.72<$M/M$_{\odot}<2.8$. The tidal radius of the Boc2 cluster ($\sim7-9$) is much more than its observed radius ($\sim1.1$ pc). This suggests that most of the low-mass stars in this cluster are the remains of an older population of stars formed via an earlier epoch of star formation., Comment: accepted for publication in Journal of Astrophysics and Astronomy

We present photometric and kinematic analysis of an intermediate age open cluster NGC 1027 using $UBV(RI)_c$ and Gaia Early Data Release 3 (EDR3) data. Structural and fundamental parameters such as cluster center, cluster extent, reddening, age and distance are estimated in this study. Cluster center is found about 2 arcmin away from the center reported earlier. Radius has been estimated to be about 8.00 arcmin(2.65pc). Using proper motion Gaia EDR3 data, membership probabilities has been derived for the stars in the region of cluster radius. We find mean proper motion of the cluster to be $\sim$(-0.84, 2.04) mas yr$^{-1}$ in (RA, DEC). We find 217 most probable (P$_\mu>$ 70\%) cluster members with mean parallax 0.892 $\pm$ 0.088 mas. Out of these, 160 members have counterparts in our optical observations. Few stars having P$_\mu>$ 70\% are found out of the cluster radius showing imprints of dynamical evolution. The color-color and color-magnitude diagrams for the cluster members found within 8.00 arcmin have been constructed using $UBV(RI)_c$ photometry and Gaia EDR3 data. This yields a reddening E($B$-$V$) $\sim$ 0.36 mag, age $\sim$ 130 Myr and distance $\sim$ 1.14 kpc. The mass function slope in the cluster region is $\Gamma$ $\sim$ -1.46 $\pm$ 0.15, which is similar to other Galactic open clusters. The dynamical study shows lack of faint stars in its inner region leading to mass segregation effect. A comparison of dynamical age with cluster age indicates that NGC 1027 is a dynamically relaxed cluster suggesting that mass segregation may be imprint of its dynamical relaxation.

Actively accreting young stellar objects show H$\alpha$ emission line in their spectra. We present the results of survey for H$\alpha$ emission-line stars in the star-forming region IC~5070 taken with 2-m Himalyan {\it Chandra} Telescope. Based on the H$\alpha$ slitless spectroscopy data, we identified 131 emission-line stars in $\sim$ 0.29 square degrees area of the IC~5070 region. Using Gaia Early Data Release 3, we estimated the mean proper motion and parallax of the emission-line stars. We also estimated the mean distance and reddening toward the region using the emission-line stars, that are $\sim$ 833 pc and $\sim$2 mag, respectively. By examining the locations of these stars in the color-magnitude diagrams constructed using Gaia and PanSTARRS1 data, we found that a majority of the H$\alpha$ emitters are young low-mass ($<$ 1.5 $M\odot$) stars. We also compared our catalog of emission-line stars with the available young stellar catalogs and found that most of them are Class~{II}/ flat spectrum sources with the spectral type ranging from K to M. Based on the proper motion/ parallax values and locations on the color-magnitude diagrams, about 20 emission-line stars are flagged as non-members. The relative proper motion of the emission-line stars with respect to the ionizing source suggest the possibility of the `rocket effect' scenario in the remnant cloud (BRC~31)., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, Accepted for publication in Journal of Astrophysics & Astronomy

We have performed a detailed analysis on the Teutsch 76 (T76) open cluster using the deep near-infrared (NIR) observations taken with the TANSPEC instrument mounted on the 3.6m Devasthal Optical Telescope (DOT) along with the recently available high quality proper motion data from the {\it Gaia} data release 3 and deep photometric data from Pan-STARRS1 survey. We have found that the T76 cluster is having a central density concentration with circular morphology, probably due to the star formation processes. The radius of the T76 cluster is found to be 45$^{\prime}{^\prime}$ (1.24 pc) and 28 stars within this radius were marked as highly probable cluster members. We have found that the cluster is located at a distance of $5.7\pm1.0$ kpc and is having an age of $50\pm10$ Myr. The mass function slope ($\Gamma$) in the cluster region in the mass range $\sim$0.75$<$M/M$_\odot$$<$5.8 is estimated as $-1.3\pm0.2$, which is similar to the value `-1.35' given by \citet{1955ApJ...121..161S}. We present stellar variability towards the young open cluster NGC\,6823. Time series $V$- and $I$-band CCD photometry led to identification and characterization of 88 variable stars, of which only 14 have been previously recognized. We ascertain the membership of each variable with optical $UBVI$ and infrared photometry, and with Gaia EDR3 parallax and proper motion data. Seventy two variable stars are found to be cluster members, of which 25 are main sequence stars and 48 are pre-main-sequence stars. The probable cluster members collectively suggest an isochrone age of the cluster to be about 2~Myrs based on the GAIA photometry. With the color and magnitude, as well as the shape of the light curve, we have classified the main sequence variables into $\beta$~Cep, $\delta$~Scuti, slowly pulsating B type, and new class variables. Among the pre-main-sequence variables, eight are classical T Tauri variables, and four are Herbig Ae/Be objects, whereas the remaining belong to the weak-lined T Tauri population. The variable nature of 32 stars is validated with TESS light curves. Our work provides refined classification of variability of pre-main-sequence and main-sequence cluster members of the active star-forming complex, Sharpless\,86. Despite no strong evidence of the disk-locking mechanism in the present sample of TTSs, one TTS with larger $\Delta(I-K)$ is found to be slow rotator., Comment: 19 pages, 19 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present a study of the molecular cloud in Sh2-112 massive star forming region using the 3-2 transition of CO isotopologues - CO, 13CO, and C18O; supplemented in part by CGPS HI line emission and MSX data. Sh2-112 is an optically visible region powered by an O8V type massive star BD +45 3216, and hosts two Red MSX Survey sources - G083.7962+03.3058 and G083.7071+03.2817 - classified as HII region and young stellar object, respectively. Reduced spectral data products from the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope archive, centered on the two RMS objects with ~7'x7' field of view each, were utilised for the purpose. The 13CO(3-2) channel map of the region shows the molecular cloud to have filamentary extensions directed away from the massive star, which also seems to be at the edge of a cavity like structure. Multiple molecular cloud protrusions into this cavity structure host local peaks of emission. The integrated emission map of the region constructed from only those emission clumps detected above 5$\sigma$ level in the position-position-velocity space affirms the same. MSX sources were found distributed along the cavity boundary where the gas has the been compressed. Spectral extraction at these positions yielded high Mach numbers and low ratios of thermal to non-thermal pressure, suggesting a dominance of supersonic and non-thermal motion in the cloud., Comment: 15 Pages, 11 Figures, Accepted in Journal of Astrophysics and Astronomy (JAA)

We present the design and performance of the TANSPEC, a medium-resolution $0.55-2.5~\mu$m cryogenic spectrometer and imager, now in operation at the 3.6-m Devasthal Optical Telescope (DOT), Nainital, India. The TANSPEC provides three modes of operation which include, photometry with broad- and narrow-band filters, spectroscopy with short slits of 20$^{\prime \prime}$ length and different widths (from 0.5$^{\prime \prime}$ to 4.0$^{\prime \prime}$) in cross-dispersed mode at a resolving power R of $\sim$2750, and spectroscopy with long slits of 60$^{\prime \prime}$ length and different widths (from 0.5$^{\prime \prime}$ to 4.0$^{\prime \prime}$) in prism mode at a resolving power R of $\sim$100-350. TANSPEC's imager mode provides a field of view of 60$^{\prime \prime} \times 60^{\prime \prime}$ with a plate scale of 0.245$^{\prime \prime}$/pixel on the 3.6-m DOT. The TANSPEC was successfully commissioned during April-May 2019 and the subsequent characterization and astronomical observations are presented here. Stars are formed by gravitational collapse, spontaneously or, in some cases under the constructive influence of nearby massive stars, out of molecular cloud cores. Here we present an observational diagnosis of such triggered formation processes in the prominent \ion{H}{2} region Sh\,2-142, which is associated with the young star cluster NGC\,7380, and with some bright-rimmed clouds as the signpost of photoionization of molecular cloud surfaces. Using near- (2MASS) and mid-infrared (WISE) colors, we identified candidate young stars at different evolutionary stages, including embedded infrared sources having spectral energy distributions indicative of active accretion. We have also used data from our optical observations to be used in SEDs, and from Gaia EDR3 to study the kinematics of young objects. With this young stellar sample, together with the latest CO line emission data (spectral resolution $\sim 0.16$~km~s$^{-1}$, sensitivity $\sim 0.5$~K), a positional and ageing sequence relative to the neighboring cloud complex, and to the bright-rimmed clouds, is inferred. The propagating stellar birth may be responsible, at least partially, for the formation of the cluster a few million years ago, and for the ongoing activity now witnessed in the cloud complex., Comment: 15 figures, 2 tables, Accepted for publication in ApJ

The Hubble UV Legacy Library of Young Stars as Essential Standards (ULLYSES) Director's Discretionary Program of low-mass pre-main-sequence stars, coupled with forthcoming data from ALMA and JWST, will provide the foundation to revolutionize our understanding of the relationship between young stars and their protoplanetary disks. A comprehensive evaluation of the physics of disk evolution and planet formation requires understanding the intricate relationships between mass accretion, mass outflow, and disk structure. Here we describe the Outflows and Disks around Young Stars: Synergies for the Exploration of ULLYSES Spectra (ODYSSEUS) Survey and present initial results of the classical T Tauri Star CVSO 109 in Orion OB1b as a demonstration of the science that will result from the survey. ODYSSEUS will analyze the ULLYSES spectral database, ensuring a uniform and systematic approach in order to (1) measure how the accretion flow depends on the accretion rate and magnetic structures, (2) determine where winds and jets are launched and how mass-loss rates compare with accretion, and (3) establish the influence of FUV radiation on the chemistry of the warm inner regions of planet-forming disks. ODYSSEUS will also acquire and provide contemporaneous observations at X-ray, optical, NIR, and millimeter wavelengths to enhance the impact of the ULLYSES data. Our goal is to provide a consistent framework to accurately measure the level and evolution of mass accretion in protoplanetary disks, the properties and magnitudes of inner-disk mass loss, and the influence of UV radiation fields that determine ionization levels and drive disk chemistry., Comment: accepted to ApJ

The Gaia Alert System issued an alert on 2020 August 28, on Gaia 20eae when its light curve showed a $\sim$4.25 magnitude outburst. We present multi-wavelength photometric and spectroscopic follow-up observations of this source since 2020 August and identify it as the newest member of the FUor/EXor family of sources. We find that the present brightening of Gaia 20eae is not due to the dust clearing event but due to an intrinsic change in the spectral energy distribution. The light curve of Gaia 20eae shows a transition stage during which most of its brightness ($\sim$3.4 mag) has occurred at a short timescale of 34 days with a rise-rate of 3 mag/month. Gaia 20eae has now started to decay at a rate of 0.3 mag/month. We have detected a strong P Cygni profile in H$\alpha$ which indicates the presence of winds originating from regions close to the accretion. We find signatures of very strong and turbulent outflow and accretion in Gaia 20eae during this outburst phase. We have also detected a red-shifted absorption component in all the Ca II IR triplet lines consistent with signature of hot in-falling gas in the magnetospheric accretion funnel. This enables us to constrain the viewing angle with respect to the accretion funnel. We present a multiwavelength study of the H II region Sh 2-301 (S301) using deep optical data, near-infrared data, radio continuum data and other archival data at longer wavelengths. A cluster of young stellar objects (YSOs) is identified in the north-east (NE) direction of S301. The H{\alpha} and radio continuum images trace the distribution of the ionized gas surrounding a massive star ALS 207, and the S301 H II region is bounded by an arc-like structure of gas and dust emission in the south-eastern direction. The north-western part of S301 seems to be devoid of gas and dust emission, while the presence of molecular material between the NE cluster and the central massive star ALS 207 is found. The distribution of warm dust emission, ionized gas, and neutral hydrogen together suggests a blistered morphology of the S301 H II region powered by ALS 207, which appears to be located near the edge of the cloud. The location of the NE cluster embedded in the cold molecular cloud is found opposite to the blistered morphology. There is a noticeable age difference investigated between the massive star and the NE cluster. This age difference, pressure calculation, photodissociation regions (PDRs), and the distribution of YSOs favour the positive feedback of the massive star ALS 207 in S301. On a wider scale of S301, the H II region and the young stellar cluster are depicted toward the central region of a hub-filamentary system, which is evident in the infrared images., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

Young star clusters consisting of massive stars are the ideal sites to study the star formation processes and influence of massive stars on the subsequent star formation. NGC 1893 is a young star cluster associated with the HII region Sh2-236. It contains about five `O'-type stars and several early `B'-type stars. It is located at a distance of $\sim$3.25 kpc and has a reddening, E(B-V)$\sim$0.4 mag. To characterize the young low-mass stellar population in the central portion of the cluster, we carried out deep VI band observations of the region using the 4K$\times$4K CCD IMAGER mounted on the 3.6-m DOT. Our analysis shows that the present data are deep enough to detect stars below $\sim$24 mag. We found optical counterparts of $\sim$220 candidate members, including young stars and unclassified cluster members from Caramazza et al. (2008). We estimated the membership probabilities of the Gaia sources (mostly bright stars with G$<$19 mag) located within the cluster radius using the Gaia EDR3. Toward the fainter end, we used the optical color-magnitude diagram (CMD) to select the cluster members from a sample of young stars. The unclassified member candidates and X-ray sources from Caramazza et al. (2012) are also found to be young low-mass stars. In total, we identified $\sim$425 young stars with age$<$10 Myr, and 110 of these are new. Most of these stars appear kinematic members of the cluster. By examining the CMD for the stars in the cluster region, we suggest that the cluster has insignificant contamination due to field stars in the pre-main sequence zone of the CMD. The slope of the mass function in the mass range 0.2$\le$M/M$\odot$$\le$2.5 is found to be $\Gamma$ = -1.43 $\pm$ 0.15, consistent with those of other star-forming complexes. We present the results from our time-series imaging data taken with the 1.3m Devasthal fast optical telescope and 0.81m Tenagara telescope in $V$, $R_{c}$, $I_{c}$ bands covering an area of $\sim18^\prime.4\times 18^\prime.4$ towards the star-forming region Sh 2-190. This photometric data helped us to explore the nature of the variability of pre-main sequence (PMS) stars. We have identified 85 PMS variables, i.e., 37 Class II and 48 Class III sources. Forty-five of the PMS variables are showing periodicity in their light curves. We show that the stars with thicker discs and envelopes rotate slower and exhibit larger photometric variations compared to their disc-less counterparts. This result suggests that rotation of the PMS stars is regulated by the presence of circumstellar discs. We also found that the period of the stars show a decreasing trend with increasing mass in the range of $\sim$0.5-2.5 M$_\odot$. Our result indicates that most of the variability in Class II sources is ascribed to the presence of thick disc, while the presence of cool spots on the stellar surface causes the brightness variation in Class III sources. X-ray activities in the PMS stars were found to be at the saturation level reported for the main sequence (MS) stars. The younger counterparts of the PMS variables are showing less X-ray activity hinting towards a less significant role of a stellar disc in X-ray generation., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

We identify 228 periodic variables in the region of young open cluster NGC 281 using time series photometry carried out from 1 m class ARIES telescopes, Nainital. The cluster membership of these identified variables is determined on the basis colour-magnitude, two colour diagrams and kinematic data. Eighty one variable stars are found to be members of the cluster NGC 281. Of 81 variables, 30 and 51 are probable main-sequence and pre-main-sequence members, respectively. Present study classifies main-sequence variable stars into different variability types according to their periods of variability, shape of light curves and location in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. These identified main-sequence variables could be $\beta$ Cep, $\delta$ Scuti, slowly pulsating B type and new class variables. Among 51 pre-main-sequence variables, majority of them are weak line T Tauri stars. The remaining 147 variables could belong to the field population. We report the observational findings of the Sh2-112 H{\sc ii} region by using the multiwavelength data analysis ranging from optical to radio wavelengths. This region is powered by a massive O8V-type star BD +45 3216. The surface density distribution and minimum spanning tree analyses of the young stellar object (YSO) candidates in the region reveal their groupings toward the western periphery of the H{\sc ii} region. A GMRT radio continuum emission peak is found toward the north-west boundary of the H{\sc ii} region and is investigated as a compact/ultra-compact H{\sc ii} region candidate powered by a B0-B0.5 type star. Toward the south-west direction, a prominent curved rim-like structure is found in the H$\alpha$ image and GMRT radio continuum maps, where the H$_2$ and $^{13}$CO emission is also observed. These results suggest the existence of the ionized boundary layer (IBL) on the surface of the molecular cloud. This IBL is found to be over-pressurized with respect to the internal pressure of the surrounding molecular cloud. This implies that the shocks are propagating/ propagated into the molecular cloud and the young stars identified within it are likely triggered due to the massive star. It is also found that this region is ionization bounded toward the west-direction and density bounded toward the east-direction. Based on the distribution of the ionized gas, molecular material, and the YSO candidates; we propose that the Sh2-112 H{\sc ii} region is a good candidate for the blister-type H{\sc ii} region which has been evolved on the surface of a cylindrical molecular cloud., Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

The processes which regulate the star-formation within molecular clouds are still not well understood. Various star-formation scaling relations have been proposed to explain this issue by formulating a relation between star-formation rate surface density ($\rm \Sigma_{SFR}$) and the underlying gas surface density ($\rm \Sigma_{gas}$). In this work, we test various star formation scaling relations, such as Kennicutt-Schmidt relation, volumetric star-formation relation, orbital time model, crossing time model, and multi free-fall time scale model towards the North American and Pelican Nebulae complexes and in cold clumps associated with them. Measuring stellar-mass from young stellar objects and gaseous mass from CO measurements, we estimated mean $\rm \Sigma_{SFR}$, star formation rate per free-fall time, and star formation efficiency (SFE) for clumps to be 1.5 $\rm M{_\odot}~yr^{-1}~kpc^{-2}$, 0.009, 2.0$\%$, respectively, while for the entire NAN complex the values are 0.6 $\rm M{_\odot}~yr^{-1}~kpc^{-2}$, 0.0003, and 1.6$\%$, respectively. For clumps, we notice that the observed properties are in line with the correlation obtained between $\rm \Sigma_{SFR}$ and $\rm \Sigma_{gas}$, and between $\rm \Sigma_{SFR}$ and $\rm \Sigma_{gas}$ per free-fall time and orbital time for Galactic clouds. At the same time, we do not observe any correlation with $\rm \Sigma_{gas}$ per crossing time and multi free-fall time. Even though we see correlations in former cases, however, all models agree with each other within a factor of 0.5 dex, and discriminating between these models is not possible due to the current uncertainties in the input observables. We also test the variation of $\rm \Sigma_{SFR}$ versus the dense gas, but due to low statistics, a weak correlation is seen in our analysis., Comment: 21 pages and 17 figures. Deep and wide-field optical photometric observations along with multiwavelength archival datasets have been employed to study the physical properties of the cluster NGC 6910. The study also examines the impact of massive stars to their environment. The age, distance and reddening of the cluster are estimated to be $\sim$4.5 Myr, $1.72\pm0.08$ kpc, and $ E(B-V)_{min}= 0.95$ mag, respectively. The mass function slope ($\Gamma = -0.74\pm0.15$ in the cluster region is found to be flatter than the Salpeter value (-1.35), indicating the presence of excess number of massive stars. The cluster also shows mass segregation towards the central region due to their formation processes. The distribution of warm dust emission is investigated towards the central region of the cluster, showing the signature of the impact of massive stars within the cluster region. Radio continuum clumps powered by massive B-type stars (age range $\sim$ 0.07-0.12 Myr) are traced, which are located away from the center of the stellar cluster NGC 6910 (age $\sim$ 4.5 Myr). Based on the values of different pressure components exerted by massive stars, the photoionized gas associated with the cluster is found to be the dominant feedback mechanism in the cluster. Overall, the massive stars in the cluster might have triggered the birth of young massive B-type stars in the cluster. Using our deep optical and near-infrared photometry along with multiwavelength archival data, we here present a detailed study of the Galactic H II region Sh 2-305, to understand the star/star-cluster formation. On the basis of excess infra-red emission, we have identified 116 young stellar objects (YSOs) within a field of view of ~ 18.5 arcminute x 18.5 arcminute, around Sh 2-305. The average age, mass and extinction (A_V) for this sample of YSOs are 1.8 Myr, 2.9 solar mass and 7.1 mag, respectively. The density distribution of stellar sources along with minimal spanning tree calculations on the location of YSOs reveals at least three stellar sub-clusterings in Sh 2-305. One cluster is seen toward the center (i.e., Mayer 3), while the other two are distributed toward the north and south directions. Two massive O-type stars (VM2 and VM4; ages ~ 5 Myr) are located at the center of the Sh 2-305 H II region. The analysis of the infrared and radio maps traces the photon dominant regions (PDRs) in the Sh 2-305. Association of younger generation of stars with the PDRs is also investigated in the Sh 2-305. This result suggests that these two massive stars might have influenced the star formation history in the Sh 2-305. This argument is also supported with the calculation of various pressures driven by massive stars, slope of mass function/K-band luminosity function, star formation efficiency, fraction of Class I sources, and mass of the dense gas toward the sub-clusterings in the Sh 2-305.

We present time series photometry in the field of Stock 8 and identified 130 short period variable stars. Twenty eight main-sequence and 23 pre-main-sequence variables are found to be part of cluster Stock 8. The main-sequence variables are classified as slow pulsator of the B type, $\beta$ Cep and $\delta$ Scuti stars. Fourteen main-sequence stars could be new class variables as discussed by Mowlavi et al. (2013) and Lata et al. (2014). The age and mass of pre-main-sequence variables are found to be $\lesssim$ 5 Myr and in the mass range of 0.5 to 2.8 M$_{\odot}$, respectively. These pre-main-sequence stars could be T-Tauri variables. We have found 5 and 2 of 23 PMS variables as classical T-Tauri stars and Herbig Ae/Be stars, respectively, whereas 16 PMS stars are classified as weak-line T Tauri stars., Comment: 17 pages, 14 figures, Accepted for the publication in Astronomical Journal

It is well known that most of the stars form in rich clusters. However, recent $Spitzer$ observations have shown that a significant number of stars also form in distributed mode, origin of which is not well understood. In this work, we aim to investigate clustered and distributed mode of star formation in the W4 complex. To do so, we identified and characterized the young stellar population associated with the region using homogeneous infra-red data-sets obtained from 2MASS, GLIMPSE, MIPS and WISE surveys. We make stellar surface density and minimum spanning tree maps to identify young clusters, and use {\it Spitzer} images to identify irradiated structures, such as elephant trunk-like structures (ETLSs) and pillars in the region. The surface density distribution of the young stellar objects (YSOs) reveals three new clusterings and $\sim$ 50\% distributed protostars in the H{\sc ii} region. The clusters are of low-mass nature but significantly younger than the central cluster IC~1805. We identified $\sim$ 38 ETLSs in the region, a majority of which consist of one or a few stars at their tips. We find these stars are low-mass ($<$ 2~M$_\odot$) YSOs, located at the outskirts ($>$ 17 pc) of the cluster IC~1805 and are part of scattered distributed population. We argued that the star formation in the ETLSs of W4 is going on possibly due to triggering effect of expanding W4 bubble. Although high-resolution photometric and spectroscopic data would be required to confirm the scenario, nonetheless, we discuss the implications of this scenario for our understanding of distributed low-mass star formation in cloud complexes as opposed to other mechanisms such as turbulent fragmentation and dynamical ejection., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in the Astronomical Journal

Berkeley 59 is a nearby ($\sim$1 kpc) young cluster associated with the Sh2-171 H{\sc ii} region. We present deep optical observations of the central $\sim$2.5$\times$2.5 pc$^2$ area of the cluster, obtained with the 3.58-m Telescopio Nazionale Galileo. The $V$/($V$-$I$) color-magnitude diagram manifests a clear pre-main-sequence (PMS) population down to $\sim$ 0.2 M$_\odot$. Using the near-infrared and optical colors of the low-mass PMS members we derive a global extinction of A$_V$= 4 mag and a mean age of $\sim$ 1.8 Myr, respectively, for the cluster. We constructed the initial mass function and found that its global slopes in the mass ranges of 0.2 - 28 M$_\odot$ and 0.2 - 1.5 M$_\odot$ are -1.33 and -1.23, respectively, in good agreement with the Salpeter value in the solar neighborhood. We looked for the radial variation of the mass function and found that the slope is flatter in the inner region than in the outer region, indicating mass segregation. The dynamical status of the cluster suggests that the mass segregation is likely primordial. The age distribution of the PMS sources reveals that the younger sources appear to concentrate close to the inner region compared to the outer region of the cluster, a phenomenon possibly linked to the time evolution of star-forming clouds is discussed. Within the observed area, we derive a total mass of $\sim$ 10$^3$ M$_\odot$ for the cluster. W4 is a giant H{\sc ii} region ionized by the OB stars of the cluster IC~1805. The H{\sc ii} region/cluster complex has been a subject of numerous investigations as it is an excellent laboratory for studying the feedback effect of massive stars on the surrounding region. However, the low-mass stellar content of the cluster IC~1805 remains poorly studied till now. With the aim to unravel the low-mass stellar population of the cluster, we present the results of a multiwavelength study based on deep optical data obtained with the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, infrared data from 2MASS, $Spitzer$ Space Telescope and X-ray data from $Chandra$ Space Telescope. The present optical dataset is complete enough to detect stars down to 0.2~M$_\odot$, which is the deepest optical observations so far for the cluster. We identified 384 candidate young stellar objects (YSOs; 101 Class I/II and 283 Class III) within the cluster using various colour-colour and colour-magnitude diagrams. We inferred the mean age of the identified YSOs to be $\sim$ 2.5 Myr and mass in the range 0.3 - 2.5 M$_\odot$. The mass function of our YSO sample has a power law index of -1.23 $\pm$ 0.23, close to the Salpeter value (-1.35), and consistent with those of other star-forming complexes. We explored the disk evolution of the cluster members and found that the diskless sources are relatively older compared to the disk bearing YSO candidates. We examined the effect of high-mass stars on the circumstellar disks and found that within uncertainties, the influence of massive stars on the disk fraction seems to be insignificant. The evolution of HII regions/supershells can trigger a new generation of stars/clusters at their peripheries, with environmental conditions that may affect the initial mass function, disk evolution and star formation efficiency. In this paper we study the stellar content and star formation processes in the young cluster Stock 8, which itself is thought to be formed during the expansion of a supershell. We present deep optical photometry along with JHK and 3.6, 4.5 {\mu}m photometry from UKIDSS and Spitzer-IRAC. We use multi-color criteria to identify the candidate young stellar objects in the region. Using evolutionary models, we obtain a median log(age) of ~6.5 (~3.0 Myr) with an observed age spread of ~0.25 dex for the cluster. Monte Carlo simulations of the population of Stock 8, based on estimates for the photometric uncertainty, differential reddening, binarity, and variability, indicate that these uncertainties introduce an age spread of ~0.15 dex. The intrinsic age spread in the cluster is ~0.2 dex. The fraction of young stellar objects surrounded by disk is ~35%. The K-band luminosity function of Stock 8 is similar to that of the Trapezium cluster. The IMF of Stock 8 has a Salpeter- like slope at >0.5 Msun and the IMF flattens and peaks at ~0.4 Msun, below which declines into the substellar regime. Although Stock 8 is surrounded by several massive stars, there seems to be no severe environmental effect in the form of IMF due to the proximity of massive stars around the cluster., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

We observed RZ LMi, which is renowned for the extremely (~19d) short supercycle and is a member of a small, unusual class of cataclysmic variables called ER UMa-type dwarf novae, in 2013 and 2016. In 2016, the supercycles of this object substantially lengthened in comparison to the previous measurements to 35, 32, 60d for three consecutive superoutbursts. We consider that the object virtually experienced a transition to the novalike state (permanent superhumper). This observed behavior extremely well reproduced the prediction of the thermal-tidal instability model. We detected a precursor in the 2016 superoutburst and detected growing (stage A) superhumps with a mean period of 0.0602(1)d in 2016 and in 2013. Combined with the period of superhumps immediately after the superoutburst, the mass ratio is not as small as in WZ Sge-type dwarf novae, having orbital periods similar to RZ LMi. By using least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (Lasso) two-dimensional power spectra, we detected possible negative superhumps with a period of 0.05710(1)d. We estimated the orbital period of 0.05792d, which suggests a mass ratio of 0.105(5). This relatively large mass ratio is even above ordinary SU UMa-type dwarf novae, and it is also possible that the exceptionally high mass-transfer rate in RZ LMi may be a result of a stripped core evolved secondary which are evolving toward an AM CVn-type object., Comment: 14 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ; includes Supplementary_draft_aph.pdf with somewhat degraded figures

We present time series photometry of 57 variable stars in the cluster region NGC 7380. The association of these variable stars to the cluster NGC 7380 has been established on the basis of two colour diagrams and colour-magnitude diagrams. Seventeen stars are found to be main-sequence variables, which are mainly B type stars and are classified as slowly pulsating B stars, $\beta$ Cep or $\delta$ Scuti stars. Some of them may belong to new class variables as discussed by Mowlavi et al. (2013) and Lata et al. (2014). Present sample also contains 14 pre-main-sequence stars, whose ages and masses are found to be mostly $\lesssim$ 5 Myr and range 0.60 $\lesssim M/M_{\odot} \lesssim$ 2.30 and hence should be T-Tauri stars. About half of the weak line T-Tauri stars are found to be fast rotators with a period of $\lesssim$ 2 days as compared to the classical T-Tauri stars. Bright-rimmed clouds (BRCs), illuminated and shaped by nearby OB stars, are potential sites of recent/ongoing star formation. Here we present an optical and infrared photometric study of three BRCs: BRC 5, BRC 7 and BRC 39 to obtain a census of the young stellar population, thereby inferring the star formation scenario, in these regions. In each BRC, the Class I sources are found to be located mostly near the bright rim or inside the cloud, whereas the Class II sources are preferentially outside, with younger sources closer to the rim. This provides strong support to sequential star formation triggered by radiation driven implosion due to the UV radiation. Moreover, each BRC contains a small group of young stars being revealed at its head, as the next-generation stars. In particular, the young stars at the heads of BRC 5 and BRC 7 are found to be intermediate/high mass stars, which, under proper conditions, may themselves trigger further star birth, thereby propagating star formation out to long distances., Comment: 30 pages, 7 Figures, 6 Tables, accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society

Our star-count analysis of the Two Micron All Sky Survey point sources resulted in an identification of the star cluster G144.9+0.4. The cluster was found, but not characterized, by Glushkova et al. We show that the cluster is physically associated with the Cam OB1 association at a distance of about 1 kpc and with an age of 1-2 Myr. Pre-main sequence stars are identified on the basis of photometric and proper motion data. A total of 91 additional OB star candidates was found in subgroups 1A and 1B, a significant increase from the currently known 43 OB stars. The OB members show an age spread that indicates a sustained star formation for at least the last 10-15 Myr. We present optical spectrophotometric monitoring of four active T Tauri stars (DG Tau, RY Tau, XZ Tau, RW Aur A) at high spectral resolution ($R \ga 1 \times 10^4$), to investigate the correlation between time variable mass ejection seen in the jet/wind structure of the driving source and time variable mass accretion probed by optical emission lines. This may allow us to constrain the understanding of the jet/wind launching mechanism, the location of the launching region, and the physical link with magnetospheric mass accretion. In 2010, observations were made at six different epochs to investigate how daily and monthly variability might affect such a study. We perform comparisons between the line profiles we observed and those in the literature over a period of decades and confirm the presence of time variability separate from the daily and monthly variability during our observations. This is so far consistent with the idea that these line profiles have a long term variability (3-20 years) related to episodic mass ejection suggested by the structures in the extended flow components. We also investigate the correlations between equivalent widths and between luminosities for different lines. We find that these correlations are consistent with the present paradigm of steady magnetospheric mass accretion and emission line regions that are close to the star., Comment: Accepted for publication in AJ
