The RML mapping language declares schema transformations to map heterogeneous data into knowledge graphs. Although the schema transformations provided by RML are sufficient for simple use cases, large real-world ones typically involve diverse data and require complex computations. User-defined functions provide the flexibility to enable the creation and application of knowledge graphs for these use cases and also allow reusing existing software packages for data processing in multiple domains. In this work, we present an implementation for data transformations in Morph-KGC. This implementation has the following benefits: (i) it conforms to RML-FNML, the standard module for data transformations in RML, (ii) it can handle user-defined functions written in Python, a widely used programming language for data processing, (iii) it includes support for YARRRML, a user-friendly syntax of RML to maximize usability. The implementation is currently being used by BASF, a large multinational chemical company, to semantically integrate its industrial data in a maintainable and reproducible manner.

The agricultural industry and regulatory organizations define strategies and build tools and products for plant protection against pests. To identify different plants and their related pests and avoid inconsistencies between such organizations, an agreed and shared classification is necessary. In this regard, the European and Mediterranean Plant Protection Organization (EPPO) has been working on defining and maintaining a harmonized coding system (EPPO codes). EPPO codes are an easy way of referring to a specific organism by means of short 5 or 6 letter codes instead of long scientific names or ambiguous common names. EPPO codes are freely available in different formats through the EPPO Global Database platform and are implemented as a worldwide standard and used among scientists and experts in both industry and regulatory organizations. One of the large companies that adopted such codes is BASF, which uses them mainly in research and development to build their crop protection and seeds products. However, extracting the information is limited by fixed API calls or files that require additional processing steps. Facing these issues makes it difficult to use the available information flexibly, infer new data connections, or enrich it with external data sources. To overcome such limitations, BASF has developed an internal EPPO ontology to represent the list of codes provided by the EPPO Global Database as well as the regulatory categorization and relationship among them. This paper presents the development process of this ontology along with its enrichment process, which allows the reuse of relevant information available in an external knowledge source such as the NCBI Taxon. In addition, this paper describes the use and adoption of the EPPO ontology within the BASF's Agricultural Solutions division and the lessons learned during this work.

Public administrations handle large amounts of data in relation to their internal processes as well as to the services that they offer. Following public-sector information reuse regulations and worldwide open data publication trends, these administrations are increasingly publishing their data as open data. However, open data are often released without agreed data models and in non-reusable formats, reducing interoperability and efficiency in data reuse. These aspects hinder interoperability with other administrations and do not allow taking advantage of the associated knowledge in an efficient manner. This paper presents the continued work performed by the Zaragoza city council over more than 15 years in order to generate its knowledge graph, which constitutes the key piece of their data management system, whose main strengthen is the open-data-by-default policy. The main functionalities that have been developed for the internal and external exploitation of the city’s open data are also presented. Finally, some city council experiences and lessons learned during this process are also explained.

Existing smart city ontologies allow representing different types of city-related data from cities. They have been developed according to different ontological commitments and hence do not share a minimum core model that would facilitate interoperability among smart city information systems. In this work, a survey has been carried out in order to study available smart city ontologies and to identify the domains they are representing. Taking into account the findings of the survey and a set of ontological requirements for smart city data, a list of ontology design patterns is proposed. These patterns aim to be easily replicated and provide a minimum set of core concepts in order to guide the development of smart city ontologies.
