Background Cellular senescence, a permanent state of replicative arrest in otherwise proliferating cells, is a hallmark of aging and has been linked to aging-related diseases. Many genes play a role in cellular senescence, yet a comprehensive understanding of its pathways is still lacking. Results We develop CellAge (http://genomics.senescence.info/cells), a manually curated database of 279 human genes driving cellular senescence, and perform various integrative analyses. Genes inducing cellular senescence tend to be overexpressed with age in human tissues and are significantly overrepresented in anti-longevity and tumor-suppressor genes, while genes inhibiting cellular senescence overlap with pro-longevity and oncogenes. Furthermore, cellular senescence genes are strongly conserved in mammals but not in invertebrates. We also build cellular senescence protein-protein interaction and co-expression networks. Clusters in the networks are enriched for cell cycle and immunological processes. Network topological parameters also reveal novel potential cellular senescence regulators. Using siRNAs, we observe that all 26 candidates tested induce at least one marker of senescence with 13 genes (C9orf40, CDC25A, CDCA4, CKAP2, GTF3C4, HAUS4, IMMT, MCM7, MTHFD2, MYBL2, NEK2, NIPA2, and TCEB3) decreasing cell number, activating p16/p21, and undergoing morphological changes that resemble cellular senescence. Conclusions Overall, our work provides a benchmark resource for researchers to study cellular senescence, and our systems biology analyses reveal new insights and gene regulators of cellular senescence.

Many genes have been associated with cell senescence, yet a comprehensive understanding of cell senescence pathways is still lacking. To this end, we created CellAge (http://genomics.senescence.info/cells), a manually curated database of 279 human genes associated with cellular senescence, and performed various integrative and functional analyses. We observed that genes promoting cell senescence tend to be overexpressed with age in human tissues and are also significantly overrepresented in anti-longevity and tumour-suppressor gene databases. By contrast, genes inhibiting cell senescence overlapped with pro-longevity genes and oncogenes. Furthermore, an evolutionary analysis revealed a strong conservation of senescence-associated genes in mammals, but not in invertebrates. Using the CellAge genes as seed nodes, we also built protein-protein interaction and co-expression networks. Clusters in the networks were enriched for cell cycle and immunological processes. Network topological parameters also revealed novel potential senescence-associated regulators. We then used siRNAs and observed that of 26 candidates tested, 19 induced markers of senescence. Overall, our work provides a new resource for researchers to study cell senescence and our systems biology analyses provide new insights and novel genes regarding cell senescence.

This article considers the question of dynamic image-based visual servo control for a vertical take-off and landing unmanned aerial vehicle. The visual targets considered are colored blobs on a flat surface to which the normal direction is known. A fully nonlinear adaptive control design coupled with an asymptotic filter is provided that ensures the stability of the closed-loop system in a large domain. The image features used are a modified first order spherical moment for position regulation and optic flow for velocity damping.

A comprehensive design procedure based on extremum seeking for minimum power demand formation e ight is presented, the e rst with performance guarantees. The procedure involves the design of a new wake robust formation hold autopilot and transformation of the closed-loop aircraft dynamics to a form in which a newly available rigorous design procedure for extremum seeking is applicable. The design procedure is applied to a formation of Lockheed C-5s, extending the use of maximum performance formation e ight to large transports. By the use of availableexperimental wake data of the C-5, a model of the aircraft in the wakeis developed that models aerodynamic interference as feedback nonlinearities. Thus, this work is also the e rst to attain stable extremum seeking for a plant with nonlinear feedback. Optimal formation e ight is attained by online minimization of an easily measurable objective, the pitch angle of the wingman.

In this paper, we address both the aerodynamic modelling of a ducted fan Vertical TakeOff and Landing (VTOL) Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) and the problem of attitude stabilization when the vehicle is remotely controlled by a human pilot in presence of crosswind. In a first step, we present the main aerodynamic elements, inherent to the presence of the duct, that explain the dynamics of flight of this kind of vehicle. In a second step, we propose an attitude control designed from a linearization of the dynamic model around the hovering flight equilibrium. Experiments led on the HoverEye, a platform designed by Bertin Technologies, show that this attitude control is sufficient to open a large secure flight envelope.

A fully non-linear adaptive control design coupled with an asymptotic filter is provided that ensures the stability of the closed-loop system in a large domain. The image features used are a first order spherical moment for position and an estimation of the optic flow measurement for velocity. Experimental results are presented showing the stabilization of the VTOL UAV HoverEye in front of a colored target.
