1. Constraining light thermal inelastic dark matter with NA64

Abstract

Abstract A vector portal between the Standard Model and the dark sector is a predictive and compelling framework for thermal dark matter. Through co-annihilations, models of inelastic dark matter (iDM) and inelastic Dirac dark matter (i2DM) can reproduce the observed relic density in the MeV to GeV mass range without violating cosmological limits. In these scenarios, the vector mediator behaves like a semi-visible particle, evading traditional bounds on visible or invisible resonances, and uncovering new parameter space to explain the muon $$(g-2)$$ ( g - 2 ) anomaly. By means of a more inclusive signal definition at the NA64 experiment, we place new constraints on iDM and i2DM using a missing energy technique. With a recast-based analysis, we contextualize the NA64 exclusion limits in parameter space and estimate the reach of the newly collected and expected future NA64 data. Our results motivate the development of an optimized search program for semi-visible particles, in which fixed-target experiments like NA64 provide a powerful probe in the sub-GeV mass range.

Abstract

We report on the realisation of a cyclotron trap assisted positron tungsten moderator for the conversion of positrons with a broad keV–few MeV energy spectrum to a mono-energetic eV beam with an efficiency of 1.8(2)% defined as the ratio of the slow positrons divided by the β+ activity of the radioactive source. This is an improvement of almost two orders of magnitude compared to the state of the art of tungsten moderators. The simulation validated with this measurement suggests that, using an optimised setup, even higher efficiencies are achievable. A novel method for the production of 48V high-activity thin foil positron sources based on a solid target station at a medical cyclotron was developed. This is an improvement of more than one order of magnitude with respect to standard methods.

Abstract

We present an updated value of the Muonium 1S–2S transition frequency, highlighting contributions from different QED corrections as well as the large uncertainty in the Dirac contribution, stemming from the uncertainty of the electron to muon mass ratio. Improving the measurement of this spectral line would allow to extract a more accurate determination of fundamental constants, such as the electron to muon mass ratio or, combined with the Muonium hyperfine splitting, an independent value of the Rydberg constant. Abstract

At very low energies, a light neutral particle above a horizontal surface can experience quantum reflection. The quantum reflection holds the particle against gravity and leads to gravitational quantum states (GQs). So far, GQs were only observed with neutrons as pioneered by Nesvizhevsky and his collaborators at ILL. However, the existence of GQs is predicted also for atoms. The GRAsIAN collaboration pursues the first observation and studies of GQs of atomic hydrogen. We propose to use atoms in order to exploit the fact that orders of magnitude larger fluxes compared to those of neutrons are available. Moreover, recently the q -BOUNCE collaboration, performing GQs spectroscopy with neutrons, reported a discrepancy between theoretical calculations and experiment which deserves further investigations. For this purpose, we set up a cryogenic hydrogen beam at 6 K. 8. Measurement of the 2S1/2,F=0 → 2P1/2,F=1 transition in Muonium

Abstract

Here we present the results of the first measurement of the 2S1/2, F=0 -> 2P1/2, F=1 transition in Muonium, the hydrogen-like bound state of a positive muon and an electron. The measured value of 580.6+-6.8 MHz is in agreement with the theoretical calculations. From this measurement a value of the Lamb shift of 1045.5+-6.8 MHz is extracted, compatible with previous experiments. We also determine for the first time the 2S hyperfine splitting in Muonium to be 559.6+-7.2 MHz. The measured transition being isolated from the other hyperfine levels holds the promise to provide an improved determination of the Muonium Lamb shift at a level where bound state QED recoil corrections not accessible in hydrogen could be tested. Such a measurement will also be sensitive to new physics in the muonic sector, e.g. to new bosons which might provide an explanation of the g-2 muon anomaly or Lorentz and CPT violation. We also present the first observation of Muonium in the n = 3 excited state opening up the possibility of new precise microwave measurements as realized in hydrogen.

Abstract

The current most stringent constraints for the existence of sub-GeV dark matter coupling to Standard Model via a massive vector boson $A^\prime$ were set by the NA64 experiment for the mass region $m_{A^\prime}\lesssim 250$ MeV, by analyzing data from the interaction of $2.84\cdot10^{11}$ 100-GeV electrons with an active thick target and searching for missing-energy events. In this work, by including $A^\prime$ production via secondary positron annihilation with atomic electrons, we extend these limits in the $200$-$300$ MeV region by almost an order of magnitude, touching for the first time the dark matter relic density constrained parameter combinations. Our new results demonstrate the power of the resonant annihilation process in missing energy dark-matter searches, paving the road to future dedicated $e^+$ beam efforts.

Abstract

Vector bosons, such as dark photon A′ or Z′, can couple to muons and be produced in the bremsstrahlung reaction μ−+N→μ−+N+A′(Z′). Their possible subsequent invisible decay can be detected in fixed target experiments through missing energy/momentum signature. In such experiments, not only is the energy transfer to A′(Z′) important but also the recoil muon angle ψμ′. In this paper, we derive the total and the double differential cross sections involved in this process using the phase space Weizsäcker-Williams and improved Weizsäcker-Williams approximations, as well as using exact-tree-level calculations. As an example, we compare the derived cross sections and resulting signal yields in the NA64μ experiment that uses a 160 GeV muon beam at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron accelerator. We also discuss its impact on the NA64μ expected sensitivity to explore the (g−2)μ anomaly favored region with a Z′ boson considering 1012 muons accumulated on target.

13. The Analysis of False Judgement According to Being and Not-Being in Plato’s Theaetetus (188c10–189b9)

Abstract

The version of the paradox of false judgement examined at Tht. 188c10–189b9 relies on the assumption that to judge falsehoods is to judge the things which are not. The presentation of the argument displays several syntactic ambiguities: at several points it allows the reader to adopt different syntactic connections between the components of sentences. For instance, when Socrates says that in a false judgement the cognizer is “he who judges the things which are not about anything whatsoever” (188d3–4), how should the clause “about anything whatsoever” be construed? In common with “he who judges” and “the things which are not” (in which case the cognizer would be “he who judges about anything whatsoever the things which are not about it”), or exclusively with “he who judges” (in which case the cognizer would be “he who judges about anything whatsoever the things which are not”)? The most plausible answer is that both construals are envisaged. Accordingly, the argument has two branches corresponding to these two alternative construals. In particular, it attempts to show that in both cases the cognizer will address what does not exist – an impossibility. The idea that a false judgement is concerned with what is not about its reference has a clear echo in the Sophist. The way in which the problem is handled in the Theaetetus provides a hint that can help to find a solution for the hotly debated issue of the interpretation of the Sophist’s account of false statement.

International audience; The GBAR experiment aims to measure the gravitational acceleration of antihydrogen H̅. It will use H̅+ ions formed by the interaction of antiprotons with a dense positronium cloud, which will require about 1010 positrons to produce one H̅+. We present the first results on the positron accumulation, reaching 3.8±0.4×108 e+ collected in 560 s.

Abstract

We performed a search for a new generic X boson, which could be a scalar (S), pseudoscalar (P), vector (V), or an axial vector (A) particle produced in the 100 GeV electron scattering off nuclei, e^{-}Z→e^{-}ZX, followed by its invisible decay in the NA64 experiment at CERN. No evidence for such a process was found in the full NA64 dataset of 2.84×10^{11} electrons on target. We place new bounds on the S, P, V, A coupling strengths to electrons, and set constraints on their contributions to the electron anomalous magnetic moment a_{e}, |Δa_{X}|≲10^{-15}-10^{-13} for the X mass region 1 MeV≲m_{X}≲1 GeV. These results are an order of magnitude more sensitive compared to the current accuracy on a_{e} from the electron g-2 experiments and recent high-precision determination of the fine structure constant.

Abstract

Proportional electroluminescence (EL) in noble gases is used in two-phase detectors for dark matter searches to record (in the gas phase) the ionization signal induced by particle scattering in the liquid phase. The "standard" EL mechanism is considered to be due to noble gas excimer emission in the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV). In addition, there are two alternative mechanisms, producing light in the visible and near infrared (NIR) ranges. The first is due to bremsstrahlung of electrons scattered on neutral atoms ("neutral bremsstrahlung", NBrS). The second, responsible for electron avalanche scintillation in the NIR at higher electric fields, is due to transitions between excited atomic states. In this work, we have for the first time demonstrated two alternative techniques of the optical readout of two-phase argon detectors, in the visible and NIR range, using a silicon photomultiplier matrix and electroluminescence due to either neutral bremsstrahlung or avalanche scintillation. The amplitude yield and position resolution were measured for these readout techniques, which allowed to assess the detection threshold for electron and nuclear recoils in two-phase argon detectors for dark matter searches. Abstract

International audience; The GBAR (Gravitational Behavior of Antihydrogen at Rest) experiment at CERN requires efficient deceleration of 100 keV antiprotons provided by the new ELENA synchrotron ring to synthesize antihydrogen. This is accomplished using electrostatic deceleration optics and a drift tube that is designed to switch from -99 kV to ground when the antiproton bunch is inside – essentially a charged particle “elevator” – producing a 1 keV pulse. We describe the simulation, design, construction and successful testing of the decelerator device at -92 kV on-line with antiprotons from ELENA.

Abstract

Recent and ongoing developments of low energy muon beamlines are heralding a new era of precision Muonium spectroscopy. While past spectroscopic measurements of Muonium were performed at pulsed muon facilities and were statistically limited, the advent of continuous low energy muon beams, such as at the LEM beamline at PSI, paired with the development of efficient muon-muonium converters and laser advancements, will overcome these limitations. Current experiments presently underway at the LEM facility and in the near future at the muCool beamline, which is under development at PSI, aim to improve the precision of both the 1S-2S transition determination and Lamb shift by several orders of magnitude. In this Chapter we give an overview of the current status and future prospects of these activities at PSI, highlighting how their projected significance fits into a broader context of other ongoing efforts worldwide., SciPost Physics Proceedings (5), ISSN:2666-4003

Abstract

We demonstrate the superior performance of fluoride coated versus oxide coated mirrors in long term vacuum operation of a high power deep-ultraviolet enhancement cavity. In high vacuum ($10^{-8}$ mbar), the fluoride optics can maintain up to a record-high 10 w of stable intracavity power on one hour time scales, whereas for the oxide optics, we observe rapid degradation at lower intracavity powers with a rate that increases with power. After observing degradation in high vacuum, we can recover the fluoride and oxide optics with oxygen; however, this recovery process becomes ineffective after several applications. For fluoride coatings, we see that initial UV conditioning in an oxygen environment helps to improve the performances of the optics. In oxygen-rich environments from $\sim 10^{-4}$ mbar to 1 mbar, the fluoride optics can stably maintain up to 20 W of intracavity power on several-hour time scales whereas for the oxide optics there is immediate degradation with a rate that increases with decreasing oxygen pressure., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

The $3 \times 1 \times 1$ m$^3$ demonstrator is a dual phase liquid argon time projection chamber that has recorded cosmic rays events in 2017 at CERN. The light signal in these detectors is crucial to provide precise timing capabilities. The performances of the photon detection system, composed of five PMTs, are discussed. The collected scintillation and electroluminescence light created by passing particles has been studied in various detector conditions. In particular, the scintillation light production and propagation processes have been analyzed and compared to simulations, improving the understanding of some liquid argon properties., Comment: 30 pages, 26 figures

Abstract

Observation time is the key parameter for improving the precision of measurements of gravitational quantum states of particles levitating above a reflecting surface. We propose a new method of long confinement in such states of atoms, anti-atoms, neutrons and other particles possessing a magnetic moment. The earth gravitational field and a reflecting mirror confine particles in the vertical direction. The magnetic field originating from electric current passing through a vertical wire confines particles in the radial direction. Under appropriate conditions, motions along these two directions are decoupled to a high degree. Abstract

The improved results on a direct search for a new X ( 16.7 MeV ) boson that could explain the anomalous excess of e + e − pairs observed in the decays of the excited 8 Be ∗ nuclei (“Berillium or X17 anomaly”) are reported. Interestingly, new recent results in the nuclear transitions of another nucleus, 4 He , seems to support this anomaly spurring the need for an independent measurement. If the X boson exists, it could be produced in the bremsstrahlung reaction e − Z → e − Z X by a high energy beam of electrons incident on the active target in the NA64 experiment at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron and observed through its subsequent decay into e + e − pairs. No evidence for such decays was found from the combined analysis of the data samples with total statistics corresponding to 8.4 × 10 10 electrons on target collected in 2017 and 2018. This allows one to set new limits on the X − e − coupling in the range 1.2 × 10 − 4 ≲ e e ≲ 6.8 × 10 − 4 , excluding part of the parameter space favored by the X17 anomaly, and setting new bounds on the mixing strength of photons with dark photons ( A ′ ) with a mass ≲ 24 MeV . For the 2018 run, the setup was optimized to probe the region of parameter space characterized by a large coupling e . Abstract

We present the results of a search for a hidden mirror sector in positronium decays with a sensitivity comparable with the bounds set by the prediction of the primordial He$^{4}$ abundance from Big Bang Nucleosynthesis. No excess of events compatible with decays into the dark sector is observed resulting in an upper limit for the branching ratio of this process of $4.0\times10^{-5}$ ($90\%$ C.L.). Abstract

The Anti-Matter Factory at CERN is gearing up, commissioning of the Extra Low ENergy Antiprotons (ELENA) ring is ongoing and the first anti-protons are foreseen to circulate in the decelerator very soon. The unprecedented flux of low energy antiprotons delivered by ELENA will open a new era for precision tests with antimatter including laser and microwave spectroscopy and tests of its gravitational behaviour. Here we propose a scheme to load the ultra cold anti-hydrogen atoms that will be produced by the GBAR experiment in an optical lattice tuned at the magic wavelength of the 1S-2S transition in order to measure this interval at a level comparable or even better than its matter counter part. Abstract

Recently, the ATOMKI experiment has reported new evidence for the excess of e+e- events with a mass ∼ 17 MeV in the nuclear transitions of 4He, that they previously observed in measurements with 8Be. These observations could be explained by the existence of a new vector X17 boson. So far, the search for the decay X17 → e+e- with the NA64 experiment at the CERN SPS gave negative results. Here, we present a new technique that could be implemented in NA64 aiming to improve the sensitivity and to cover the remaining X17 parameter space. If a signal-like event is detected, an unambiguous observation is achieved by reconstructing the invariant mass of the X17 decay with the proposed method. To reach this goal an optimization of the X17 production target, as well as an efficient and accurate reconstruction of two close decay tracks, is required. A dedicated analysis of the available experimental data making use of the trackers information is presented. This method provides independent confirmation of the NA64 published results [1], validating the tracking procedure. Abstract

Precision spectroscopy of the Muonium Lamb shift and fine structure requires a robust source of 2S Muonium. To date, the beam-foil technique is the only demonstrated method for creating such a beam in vacuum. Previous experiments using this technique were statistics limited, and new measurements would benefit tremendously from the efficient 2S production at a low energy muon (< 20 keV) facility. Such a source of abundant low energy μ+ has only become available in recent years, e.g. at the Low-Energy Muon beamline at the Paul Scherrer Institute. Using this source, we report on the successful creation of an intense, directed beam of metastable Muonium. We find that even though the theoretical Muonium fraction is maximal in the low energy range of 2–5 keV, scattering by the foil and transport characteristics of the beamline favor slightly higher μ+ energies of 7–10 keV. We estimate that an event detection rate of a few events per second for a future Lamb shift measurement is feasible, enabling an increase in precision by two orders of magnitude over previous determinations., The European Physical Journal C, 80 (9), ISSN:1434-6044, ISSN:1434-6052

Abstract

In the first book of the Posterior Analytics, Aristotle distinguishes two types of preliminary knowledge that can be involved in scientific understanding: knowing that something is and knowing what something is, which he treats as equivalent to knowing what something signifies. What do these two types of preliminary knowledge amount to? How are they reciprocally related? On what grounds may they be regarded as trustworthy? It turns out that knowing that something is probably covers three types of knowledge: knowing that something is the case, knowing that something exists, and knowing that something is so-and-so. Given this wide spectrum covered by knowing that something is, the problem arises of understanding what logical space is left for knowing what something is. Unless knowing what something is a particular case of knowing that something is, the most plausible guess is that knowledge of what something is, is knowledge whose linguistic formulation involves the ‘definitional’ reading of sentences, namely the reading of a sentence whereby its predicate-expression is taken to offer a complete description of the nature of the kind signified by its subject-expression. The trustworthiness of our grasp of definitions is due to a special faculty postulated by Aristotle, namely the intellect, which has the power to ‘look into’ the nature of the kinds it is concerned with.

Abstract

Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) is a tool used to study pore networks in zeolites, as the diffusion of metastable ortho-positronium (o-Ps, an electron–positron bound pair) provides insights into connectivity that cannot be obtained by other techniques. The accurate assessment of porosity requires knowledge of the interaction of o-Ps with acid centers commonly present in these materials. Although previous studies have highlighted a potential effect, the specific impact of the nature and concentration of the acid sites remains unclear. By preparing a series of well-crystallized aluminum- and tin-containing MFI-type zeolites and with the study of commercial samples, we map the effects of Bronsted and Lewis acidity on the PALS response. The results reveal that both types of acid sites decrease the amount of o-Ps detected but through different mechanisms. Abstract

We report on a measurement of the attenuation length for the scintillation light in the tonne size liquid argon target of the ArDM dark matter experiment. The data was recorded in the first underground operation of the experiment in single-phase operational mode. The results were achieved by comparing the light yield spectra from 39Ar and 83mKr to a description of the ArDM setup with a model of full light ray tracing. A relatively low value close to 0.5 m was found for the attenuation length of the liquid argon bulk to its own scintillation light. We interpret this result as a presence of optically active impurities in the liquid argon which are not filtered by the installed purification systems. We also present analyses of the argon gas employed for the filling and discuss cross sections in the vacuum ultraviolet of various molecules in respect to purity requirements in the context of large liquid argon installations.

We report an experimental verification of conformal mapping with kitchen aluminum foil. This experiment can be reproduced in any laboratory by undergraduate students and it is therefore an ideal experiment to introduce the concept of conformal mapping. The original problem was the distribution of the electric potential in a very long plate. The correct theoretical prediction was recently derived by Czarnecki (Can. J. Phys. 92, 1297 (2014)).

The porosity of layered hydroxides can be greatly enhanced by thermal activation. Despite intense interest in the associated structural transformations, porosity changes have been almost exclusively described in terms of primitive bulk descriptors (surface area, pore volume, and average pore size), providing limited insight into the pore architecture (i.e., the geometry, location, and connectivity of the pores). This article maps porosity upon thermal activation of well-crystallized Mg(OH)2 (brucite) and isostructural layered double hydroxide {LDH, [M2+1–xM3+x(OH)2]x+(An–x/n)·mH2O} materials through novel characterization approaches such as transmission electron microscopy (TEM) coupled with in situ heating, differential hysteresis scanning (DHS) by high-resolution argon sorption, and positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS). Abstract

Positron annihilation spectroscopy (PAS) is a powerful method to study the size and connectivity of pores in zeolites. The lifetime of positronium within the host material is commonly described by the Tao-Eldrup model. However, one of its largest limitations arises from the simple geometries considered for the shape of the pores, which cannot describe accurately the complex topologies in zeolites. Here, an atomic model that combines the Tao potential with the crystallographic structure is introduced to calculate the distribution and lifetime of Ps intrinsic to a given framework. A parametrization of the model is undertaken for a set of widely applied zeolite framework types (*BEA, FAU, FER, MFI, MOR, UTL), before extending the model to all known structures. The results are compared to structural and topological descriptors, and to the Tao-Eldrup model adapted for zeolites, demonstrating the intricate dependence of the lifetime on the pore architecture.

This chapter focuses on three topics. The first is the linguistic dimension of the theory of Forms; the second is the discussion of names in the Cratylus, Plato’s only dialogue almost completely dedicated to linguistic themes; the third is the examination of semantic and ontological issues in the Sophist, whose linguistic section (259d9‒264b10) presents Plato’s most mature reflections on statements, truth, and falsehood.

Abstract

A search for sub-GeV dark matter production mediated by a new vector boson $A'$, called dark photon, is performed by the NA64 experiment in missing energy events from 100 GeV electron interactions in an active beam dump at the CERN SPS. From the analysis of the data collected in the years 2016, 2017, and 2018 with $2.84\times10^{11}$ electrons on target no evidence of such a process has been found. The most stringent constraints on the $A'$ mixing strength with photons and the parameter space for the scalar and fermionic dark matter in the mass range $\lesssim 0.2$ GeV are derived, thus demonstrating the power of the active beam dump approach for the dark matter search., 6 pages, 4 figures, version accepted for publication in Phys. Abstract

The Philebus presents some arguments for the paradoxical claim that the many are one and the one many. The most serious of these arguments concerns the multiple spatial locations of an attribute. For instance, since the attribute man belongs to many men, it is in them, and it is therefore both one and many (for it is in them either by having different parts of itself contained in them or by being wholly contained in each of them). Plato maintains that this argument goes astray. He appeals to division and collection, the procedures linked with definition and classification. He probably has in mind a mereological model of particulars, whereby perceptible particulars are mixtures whose ingredients are the attributes which they partake of. Among the ingredients of a perceptible particular there are properties that specify its spatial location, so the problem of the multiple spatial location of an attribute evaporates.

Abstract

International audience; We have developed a PbWO 4 (PWO) detector with a large dynamic range to measure the intensity of a positron beam and the absolute density of the ortho-positronium (o-Ps) cloud it creates. A simulation study shows that a setup based on such detectors may be used to determine the angular distribution of the emission and reflection of o-Ps to reduce part of the uncertainties of the measurement. These will allow to improve the precision in the measurement of the cross section for the (anti) hydrogen formation by (anti) proton-positronium charge exchange and to optimize the yield of antihydrogen ion which is an essential parameter in the GBAR experiment.

Abstract

A novel approach is presented to unfold particle hit positions in tracking detectors with multiplexed readout representing an underdetermined system of linear equations. The method does not use any prior information about the hit positions, the only assumption in the procedure is that isolated hit signals generated on consecutive detector strips follow a smooth distribution. Ambiguities introduced by charge sharing from multiplexing are reduced by using a regularization technique. We have tested this method on a multiplexed 50x50 cm$^{2}$ Micromegas detector with 1037 strips and only 61 readout channels, using cosmic rays, and we have found that single and multiple clusters of hits can be reconstructed with high efficiency., 7 pages, 12 figures

Abstract

For the GBAR (Gravitational Behaviour of Antihydrogen at Rest) experiment at CERN's Antiproton Decelerator (AD) facility we have constructed a source of slow positrons, which uses a low-energy electron linear accelerator (linac). The driver linac produces electrons of 9 MeV kinetic energy that create positrons from bremsstrahlung-induced pair production. Staying below 10 MeV ensures no persistent radioactive activation in the target zone and that the radiation level outside the biological shield is safe for public access. An annealed tungsten-mesh assembly placed directly behind the target acts as a positron moderator. The system produces $5\times10^7$ slow positrons per second, a performance demonstrating that a low-energy electron linac is a superior choice over positron-emitting radioactive sources for high positron flux., published in NIM A. 33 pages 9 figures

Abstract

Templating approaches play a key role in expanding the structural diversity of many important classes of porous materials. Understanding the interaction of the templating agent with the resulting porous framework and the mechanism of detemplation is critical to ensure their effective application. This study explores the scope of positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) to gain insight into the location of tetrapropylammonium (TPA+) industrially employed as a structure directing agent (SDA) in the synthesis of MFI-type zeolites. ortho-Positronium (o-Ps) formed upon positron implantation are initially confined within the zeolite crystals. Simulations using a modified Tao potential confirm that o-Ps atoms localize between the propyl chains of adjacent TPA+ molecules within the sinusoidal channels of the micropore network. Abstract

An exact knowledge of the architecture of complex pore networks and the impact on transport processes is critical to understand and optimize their integration in many functional solids. Here, a robust and versatile approach is demonstrated to quantitatively map pore constrictions within hierarchical faujasite-type (Y and USY) zeolites, the most widely applied zeolitic materials in industry. Differential hysteresis scanning measurements by high-resolution argon sorption coupled with an advanced modeling framework enable the derivation of the amount and size of pyramidal, constricted, and occluded mesopores. This yields unprecedented insight into the impact of widely practiced demetallation treatments on the porosity evolution and clearly highlights the interplay between the geometry of mesopores developed by a given treatment and those introduced by previously applied postsynthetic modifications. Based on the findings, the dynamic assessment by positron annihilation spectroscopy confirms the effectiveness of each mesopore type at enhancing the diffusion of ortho-positronium within the crystal. The quantitative descriptors attained by these complementary techniques can revolutionize the design of porous materials for a wide range of applications.

The advanced investigation of pore networks in isoreticular zeolites and mesoporous materials related to the IPC family was performed using high-resolution argon adsorption experiments coupled with the development of a state-of-the-art non-local density functional theory approach. The optimization of a kernel for model sorption isotherms for materials possessing the same layer structure, differing only in the interlayer connectivity (e.g. oxygen bridges, single- or double-four-ring building units, mesoscale pillars etc.) revealed remarkable differences in their porous systems. Using high-resolution adsorption data, the bimodal pore size distribution consistent with crystallographic data for IPC-6, IPC-7 and UTL samples is shown for the first time. A dynamic assessment by positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) provided complementary insights, simply distinguishing the enhanced accessibility of the pore network in samples incorporating mesoscale pillars and revealing the presence of a certain fraction of micropores undetected by gas sorption. Nonetheless, subtle differences in the pore size could not be discriminated based on the widely-applied Tao-Eldrup model. The combination of both methods can be useful for the advanced characterization of microporous, mesoporous and hierarchical materials. Postprint

Abstract

We present a new experiment, Mu-MASS, aiming for a 1000-fold improvement in the determination of the 1S-2S transition frequency of Muonium (M), the positive-muon/electron bound state. This substantial improvement beyond the current state-of-the-art relies on the novel cryogenic M converters and confinement techniques we developed, on the new excitation and detection schemes which we implemented for positronium spectroscopy and the tremendous advances in generation of UV radiation. This experiment is planned to be performed at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI). Interesting anomalies in the muon sector have accumulated: notably the famous anomalous muon magnetic moment (g-2) and the muonic hydrogen Lamb shift measurement which prompted the so-called proton charge radius puzzle. These tantalizing results triggered vibrant activity on both experimental and theoretical sides. Different explanations have been put forward including exciting solutions invoking New Physics beyond the Standard Model. Mu-MASS could contribute to clarifying the origin of these anomalies by providing robust and reliable values of fundamental constants such as the muon mass and a value of the Rydberg constant independent of finite size effects., 11 pages, 3 figures, prepared for the proceedings of the LEAP 2018 conference

Abstract

Building on the successful experience in operating the DarkSide-50 detector, the DarkSide Collaboration is going to construct DarkSide-20k, a direct WIMP search detector using a two-phase Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber (LAr TPC) with an active (fiducial) mass of 23 t (20 t). This paper describes a preliminary design for the experiment, in which the DarkSide-20k LAr TPC is deployed within a shield/veto with a spherical Liquid Scintillator Veto (LSV) inside a cylindrical Water Cherenkov Veto (WCV). This preliminary design provides a baseline for the experiment to achieve its physics goals, while further development work will lead to the final optimization of the detector parameters and an eventual technical design. Operation of DarkSide-50 demonstrated a major reduction in the dominant 39Ar background when using argon extracted from an underground source, before applying pulse shape analysis. Data from DarkSide-50, in combination with MC simulation and analytical modeling, shows that a rejection factor for discrimination between electron and nuclear recoils of $>3 \times 10^{9}$ is achievable. This, along with the use of the veto system and utilizing silicon photomultipliers in the LAr TPC, are the keys to unlocking the path to large LAr TPC detector masses, while maintaining an experiment in which less than $< 0.1$ events (other than $\nu$ -induced nuclear recoils) is expected to occur within the WIMP search region during the planned exposure. DarkSide-20k will have ultra-low backgrounds than can be measured in situ, giving sensitivity to WIMP-nucleon cross sections of $1.2 \times 10^{-47}$ cm2 ( $1.1 \times 10^{-46}$ cm2) for WIMPs of 1 TeV/c2 (10 TeV/c2) mass, to be achieved during a 5 yr run producing an exposure of 100 t yr free from any instrumental background.

Abstract

A 10 kilo-tonne dual-phase liquid argon TPC is one of the detector options considered for the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE). The detector technology relies on amplification of the ionisation charge in ultra-pure argon vapour and offers several advantages compared to the traditional single-phase liquid argon TPCs. A 4.2 tonne dual-phase liquid argon TPC prototype, the largest of its kind, with an active volume of \three has been constructed and operated at CERN. In this paper we describe in detail the experimental setup and detector components as well as report on the operation experience. We also present the first results on the achieved charge amplification, prompt scintillation and electroluminescence detection, and purity of the liquid argon from analyses of a collected sample of cosmic ray muons. The detector technology relies on amplification of the ionisation charge in ultra-pure argon vapour and oers several advantages compared to the traditional single-phase liquid argon TPCs. A 4.2 tonne dual-phase liquid argon TPC prototype, the largest of its kind, with an active volume of 3x1x1 $m^3$ has been constructed and operated at CERN. In this paper we describe in detail the experimental setup and detector components as well as report on the operation experience. We also present the first results on the achieved charge amplification, prompt scintillation and electroluminescence detection, and purity of the liquid argon from analyses of a collected sample of cosmic ray muons.

Abstract

We present the performance of multiplexed XY resistive Micromegas detectors tested in the CERN SPS 100 GeV/c electron beam at intensities up to 3.3 × 10 5e−/(s-cm2). So far, all studies with multiplexed Micromegas have only been reported for tests with radioactive sources and cosmic rays. The use of multiplexed modules in high intensity environments was not explored due to the effect of ambiguities in the reconstruction of the hit point caused by the multiplexing feature. For the specific mapping and beam intensities analyzed in this work with a multiplexing factor of five, more than 50% level of ambiguity is introduced due to particle pile-up as well as fake clusters due to the mapping feature. Our results prove that by using the additional information of cluster size and integrated charge from the signal clusters induced on the XY strips, the ambiguities can be reduced to a level below 2%. The tested detectors are used in the CERN NA64 experiment for tracking the incoming particles bending in a magnetic field in order to reconstruct their momentum. The average hit detection efficiency of each module was found to be 96% at the highest beam intensities.
