The tensile properties of fabric-reinforced cementitious matrix (FRCM) composites are experimentally investigated through clevis-grip tensile tests (according to AC434 provisions) on FRCM coupons realized with customized (ad hoc developed in this paper) cement-based matrices. The tested FRCM coupons are reinforced with basalt, carbon, or steel fabrics, and are prepared with three different matrices: one-component mortar incorporating dispersible copolymer powders of vinyl acetate and ethylene (matrices A and B) and two-component mortar with carboxylated styrene–butadiene copolymer liquid resin (matrix C). This has made it possible to investigate the mechanical compatibility between different mortar matrices and fabrics and the resulting tensile properties of FRCM composites in the uncracked, cracking, and fully cracked phases. Experimental results are critically analyzed in terms of stress–strain curves and failure mechanisms comparatively for the analyzed FRCM systems. It has been shown that the matrix B exhibits a good compatibility with the basalt pre-impregnated fabric, while the matrix C appears to be the most suitable candidate to optimize the interfacial stress transfer at the fiber–matrix interface for all fabrics, thus exalting the mechanical performances in terms of tensile strength and ultimate strain. The results of this experimental program can be useful for designing optimized mortar mixes aimed at realizing novel FRCM composites or at improving existing FRCM systems by suitably accounting for compatibility behavior and slippage at the fabric–matrix interface.

Background Frameless stereotactic biopsy represents a minimally invasive procedure used for the histopathological diagnosis of brain tumors or to safely approach deep-seated lesions near eloquent areas not amenable for classical neurosurgical procedures. Traditionally, biopsy is performed relying on anatomical landmarks, but it can lead itself to intra- and postoperative complications, such as hemorrhage and fiber disruption. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) tractography represents a useful tool that can analyze the individual fiber tract conformation in cases of brain tumor and consequently identify the best biopsy trajectory, preserving white matter pathways. In our study, we present a novel technique that is based on the use of preoperative DTI for biopsy. Methods Between January 2018 and January 2020, data about patients who underwent frameless biopsy using DTI tractography were retrospectively reviewed. The inclusion criterion was adult patients eligible for elective surgery for a single or multiple deep-seated lesions with contraindications to complete surgical resection. Results We included 12 patients (mean age of 67.9 [±9.6] years). A single cranial lesion was detected in 7 cases, and multiple lesions in 5 cases. The use of DTI enabled the identification of white matter pathways in all cases and adjustment of the biopsy trajectory based on anatomical landmarks in 7 cases. Postoperative hematoma was reported in 1 case, and histological diagnosis was obtained in 11 cases. Conclusion According to our results, tractography is a useful tool that can enhance the safety of cerebral lesions biopsy sparing any fiber tract damages.

High-resolution STEM-EELS provides information about the composition of crystalline materials at the atomic scale, though a reliable quantitative chemical analysis is often hampered by zone axis conditions, where neighbouring atomic column intensities contribute to the signal at the probe position. In this work, we present a procedure to determine the concentration of two elements within equivalent atomic columns from EELS elemental maps – in our case barium and lanthanum within the A-sites of Ba1.1La1.9Fe2O7, a second order Ruddlesden-Popper phase. We took advantage of the large changes in the elemental distribution from column to column and introduced a technique, which substitutes inelastic scattering cross sections during the quantification step by using parameters obtained from the actual experiment. We considered channelling / de-channelling effects via inelastic multislice simulations and were thereby able to count occupancies in each atomic column. The EELS quantification results were then used as prior information during the Rietveld refinement in XRD measurements in order to differentiate between barium and lanthanum.

The hitherto unknown compound (Sb1/3Zn2/3)GaO3(ZnO)3, a member of the homologous series with general formula ARO3(ZnO)m (A,R = trivalent metal cation), was prepared by solid state methods from the binary oxides in sealed Pt-tubes. The structure of (Sb1/3Zn2/3)GaO3(ZnO)3 has been determined by X-ray diffraction from flux-grown single crystals ( R 3 m , Z = 3, aR = 3.2387(7) A, cR = 41.78(1) A. The analysis revealed that (Sb1/3Zn2/3)GaO3(ZnO)m is isostructural with InGaO3(ZnO)m, where In3+ on octahedral sites is replaced by Sb5+ and Zn2+ in a ratio of 1:2, preserving an average charge of 3+. (Sb1/3Zn2/3)GaO3(ZnO)3 was furthermore analyzed by electron diffraction, High Angle Annular Dark Field (HAADF) scanning TEM, and high precision EELS spectroscopic imaging, where a periodic ordering of SbO6 octahedra connected via edge sharing to six ZnO6 octahedra in the octahedral layers in a honeycomb motif is found. Due to the large lateral distance of ca. 1.4 nm between adjacent octahedral layers, electrostatic interaction might hardly dictate Sb and Zn positions in neighbouring layers, and hence is a characteristic of the real structure of (Sb1/3Zn2/3)GaO3(ZnO)3. A structure model of the compound in space group P3112 (Nr. 151) with strictly ordered and discrete Sb and Zn positions is derived by crystallographic transformations as closest approximant for the real structure of (Sb1/3Zn2/3)GaO3(ZnO)3. UV–vis measurements confirm this compound to be a transparent oxide with an optical band gap in the UV region with Eg = 3.15 eV.

Arachnoid cysts (ACs) are intra-arachnoid fluid collections and may be classified as primary or secondary in nature. Neonatal hypoglycemia (NH) is a common, life-threatening metabolic disorder in infants. We present the case of a term infant who suffered severe NH within 72 hours after birth and subsequently developed an acquired Sylvian AC.A child of 13 months of age, with history of severe NH within 72 hours after birth, was admitted after two generalized seizures. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain showed dimensional increase of a left Sylvian AC, not present on imaging on day one of life but revealed with a second MRI at 16 days of age. The timeline of events suggests some kind of correlation between the newborn's metabolic disorder, appearance of the AC, and its progressive expansion. We speculate that NH's organic consequences, i.e., cortical and white matter atrophy might have favored some kind of cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) dynamic alteration and AC development in our patient. Further structured studies are needed to confirm our hypothesis and reveal NH as a risk factor in the pathogenesis of ACs.

In many cases, electron counting with direct detection sensors offers improved resolution, lower noise, and higher pixel density compared to conventional, indirect detection sensors for electron microscopy applications. Direct detection technology has previously been utilized, with great success, for imaging and diffraction, but potential advantages for spectroscopy remain unexplored. Here we compare the performance of a direct detection sensor operated in counting mode and an indirect detection sensor (scintillator/fiber-optic/CCD) for electron energy-loss spectroscopy. Clear improvements in measured detective quantum efficiency and combined energy resolution/energy field-of-view are offered by counting mode direct detection, showing promise for efficient spectrum imaging, low-dose mapping of beam-sensitive specimens, trace element analysis, and time-resolved spectroscopy. Despite the limited counting rate imposed by the readout electronics, we show that both core-loss and low-loss spectral acquisition are practical. These developments will benefit biologists, chemists, physicists, and materials scientists alike.

We have investigated the structure and chemical composition of nanoparticles synthesized by thermal decomposition of a mixture of iron oleate and manganese oleate in a high-boiling solvent in the presence of Na-oleate and oleic acid as surfactants by analytical transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The particles appear core-shell like in bright field TEM images. Higher spatial resolution TEM (HRTEM) analysis reveals a FeO/MnO like structure in the core and a spinel like structure in the shell. With high-resolution analytical methods like energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), the distribution of the metals Mn and Fe was investigated. Differences in the oxidation state of these metals were found between the core and the shell region. The presence of sodium from the used surfactant (Na-oleate) on the surface of the particles has been proved.

Direct electron detectors (DeDs) have been widely used for imaging studies because of their higher beam sensitivity, lower noise, improved pixel resolution, etc. However, there have been limited studies related to the performance in spectroscopic applications for the direct electron detection. Hereby, taking the advantage of the DeD installed on a high-performance electron energy-loss spectrometer, we systematically studied the performance of a DeD (Gatan's K2 IS) fitted on an aberration-corrected transmission electron microscope (TEM) equipped with an electron monochromator. Using SrTiO3 as the model system, the point spread function in the zero-loss region of the spectrum and the performance for core loss spectroscopy have been investigated under both 200 kV and 80 kV operating conditions. We demonstrate that the K2 detector can achieve an overall better performance at 200 kV than a charge coupled device (CCD) detector. At 80 kV, the K2 DeD is still better than a CCD, except for the relative broad tails of the zero-loss peak. The signal-to-noise ratio is very close for DeD and CCD under 80 kV. Based on our data obtained at different operating voltages, it is clear that DeD will benefit the microscopy community and boost the development of cutting-edge materials science studies by pushing the frontiers in electron energy-loss spectroscopy.

Two-dimensional (2D) materials provide a plethora of novel condensed matter physics and are the new playground in materials science, offering potentially vast applications. One of the critical hurdles for many 2D systems is the synthesis of these low-dimensional systems as well as the prediction and identification of new candidates. Herein, a self-assembly of a monolayer tellurene by bonding CdTe wafers is demonstrated for the first time. The conventional applications of wafer-bonding range from the production of microelectromechanical systems to the synthesis of lattice-mismatched multi-junction photovoltaics. Due to the heterogeneous materials that are typically employed, the bond-interface usually contains a thin amorphous layer or arrays of dislocations. Such an interface is thus itself inactive and in many cases has detrimental effects on the device. The new material phase stabilized in this work consists of an undulating monolayer of tellurium atoms covalently bonded to {111} Cd-terminated CdTe wafer surfaces. First-principles calculations and experimentally observed changes in the localized plasmon excitation energy indicate the clear rearrangement of the underlying band-structure suggesting a metallic character, bands showing linear dispersion, and a significant asymmetric spin-band splitting. The I–V characteristics show the presence of a highly conductive pathway that lowers the resistivity by three orders of magnitude, as compared to bulk CdTe, which can be attributed to the tellurium monolayer. The findings indicate that suitably chosen crystallographic wafer surfaces can act as structural templates allowing the production of exotic phases. The presently stabilized monolayer is an addition to the family of tellurene variants, providing new insights into the fundamental properties of this and other emerging 2D materials, while attracting attention to the unusual side of the wafer-bonding technology exemplified in this study.

Phase separation of InxGa1−xN into Ga-rich and In-rich regions has been studied by electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) in a monochromated, aberration corrected scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM). We analyze the full spectral information contained in EELS of InGaN, combining for the first time studies of high-energy and low-energy ionization edges, plasmon, and valence losses. Elemental maps of the N K, In M4,5 and Ga L2,3 edges recorded by spectrum imaging at 100 kV reveal sub-nm fluctuations of the local indium content. The low energetic edges of Ga M4,5 and In N4,5 partially overlap with the plasmon peaks. Both have been fitted iteratively to a linear superimposition of reference spectra for GaN, InN, and InGaN, providing a direct measurement of phase separation at the nm-scale. Bandgap measurements are limited in real space by scattering delocalization rather than the electron beam size to ∼10 nm for small bandgaps, and their energetic accuracy by the method of fitting the onset of the joint density of states rather than energy resolution. For an In0.62Ga0.38N thin film we show that phase separation occurs on several length scales.

Double perovskites of the form R2BB′O6 (where R is a rare earth cation and B and B′ are chemically distinct transition metal cations with half-filled and empty eg orbitals, respectively) are of significant interest for their magnetoelectric properties. La2MnNiO6 is particularly attractive because of its large expected ferromagnetic moment per formula unit (5 μB f.u.–1) and its semiconducting character. If the ideal structure nucleates, superexchange coupling can take place via the B—O—B′ bonds that form, and the moment per formula unit can attain its maximum theoretical value. However, we show that even in the case of layer-by-layer deposition via molecular beam epitaxy, the system can follow multiple reaction pathways that lead to deviations from the double perovskite structure. In particular, we observe a spatially extended phase in which B-site cation disorder occurs, resulting in Mn—O—Mn and Ni—O—Ni antiferromagnetic domains, as well as the formation of quasi-epitaxial, antiferromagnetic NiO nanoscale...

Adding Au to Pd nanoparticles (NPs) can impart high catalytic activity with respect to hydrogenation of a wide range of substances. These materials are often synthesized by reducing metallic precursors; hence, sonochemical and solvothermal processes are commonly used to anchor these bimetals onto thin supports, including graphene. Although similar NPs have been studied reasonably well, a clear understanding of structural characteristics relative to their synthesis parameters is lacking, due to limitations in characterization techniques, which may prevent optimization of this very promising catalyst. In this report, a strategic approach has been used to identify this structural and material synthesis correlation, starting with controlled sample preparation and followed by detailed characterization. This includes advanced scanning transmission electron microscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy; the latter using a state-of-the-art instrumentation to map the distribution of Pd and Au, and to identify chemical state of the Pd NPs, which has not been previously reported. Results show that catalytic bimetal NP clusters were made of small zero-valent Pd NPs aggregating to form a shell around an Au core. Not only can the described characterization approach be applied to similar material systems, but the results can guide the optimization of the synthesis procedures.

The latest survey by the Central Statistical Institute (ISTAT) in 2015 reports in Italy an increase in the number of sports practitioners compared to 2011. They are greater in girls and more distributed on the 4 age groups chosen as a representative sample. The chosen disciplines vary according to age classes and the previous survey, indicating a significant increase in dance for females and fitness for males. This study doesn’t focus on any reasons for the choices, on the related to the study or work activities and the data don’t emerge locally. The aim of the study is to investigate a limited area, an homogeneous sample based on high school students and to investigate possible motivations including the relationship with the study. Data show that more females (63%) than males (37%) replied to the questionnaire and that a third of the students study 3 hours a day. 60% of students practices sport and the most practiced ones are fitness (38%), dance (19%) and football (16%). The lack of time due to the study prevents physical activity for a third of the students, followed by a lack of motivation (30%) and facilities in the area (13%). In conclusion, results suggest that the study circumscribed locally, with a representative sample of the reference population is more reliable and can be used as a basis for any actions to be taken.

Among the different synthesis approaches to colloidal nanocrystals, a recently developed toolkit is represented by cation exchange reactions, where the use of template nanocrystals gives access to materials that would be hardly attainable via direct synthesis. Besides, postsynthetic treatments, such as thermally activated solid-state reactions, represent a further flourishing route to promote finely controlled cation exchange. Here, we report that, upon in situ heating in a transmission electron microscope, Cu2Se or Cu nanocrystals deposited on an amorphous solid substrate undergo partial loss of Cu atoms, which are then engaged in local cation exchange reactions with Cu “acceptor” phases represented by rod- and wire-shaped CdSe nanocrystals. This thermal treatment slowly transforms the initial CdSe nanocrystals into Cu2–xSe nanocrystals, through the complete sublimation of Cd and the partial sublimation of Se atoms. Extraventricular Neurocytoma (EVN) is a rare primary tumor of Central Nervous System (CNS). To date, no cases have been reported in International Literature, about EVN associated to meningoencephalocele as manifestation of subacute increased intracranial pressure.

We report the analysis of the changes in local carbon structure and chemistry caused by the self-implantation of carbon into diamond via electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) plasmon energy shifts and core-edge fine structure fingerprinting. These two very different EELS energy and intensity ranges of the spectrum can be acquired under identical experimental conditions and nearly simultaneously using specially designed deflectors and energy offset devices known as “DualEELS.” In this way, it is possible to take full advantage of the unique and complementary information that is present in the low- and core-loss regions of the EELS spectrum. We find that self-implanted carbon under the implantation conditions used for the material investigated in this paper creates an amorphous region with significant sp2 content that varies across the interface.

The dynamics of two magnons in a Heisenberg spin chain under the influence of a non-uniform magnetic field is investigated by means of a numerical wave-function-based approach using a Holstein–Primakoff transformation. The magnetic field is localized in space such that it supports exactly one single-particle bound state. We study the interaction of this bound mode with an incoming spin wave and the interplay between transmittance, energy and momentum matching. We find analytic criteria for maximizing the interconversion between propagating single-magnon modes and true propagating two-magnon states. The manipulation of bound and propagating magnons is an essential step towards quantum magnonics.

With advancements in aberration-corrected electron optics, the resolution in scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) has been significantly improved. More importantly, the reduction of the probe size and the increase of the probe current density enable the acquisition of elemental maps at the atomic scale in a fast manner using both EELS and EDS. With the latest generations of EELS spectrometers, atomic resolution compositional and chemical maps allow interfaces, oxidation state, and even single atoms to be examined with increasing detail. These improvements have also enabled elemental and chemical maps to be acquired rapidly using both low- and high-energy edges from elements across the periodic table, including heavy atoms such Au or Pt. On the EDS side, the introduction of large-area silicon drift detectors (SDD) has allowed these high-beam-current sources to be fully utilized. Improved detector area and support for higher count rates, compared to the previous generation of EDS detectors, allows the acquisition of EDS intensity maps from most types of material in the STEM, even for moderately thin samples. For the case of light elements, the reduced detector dead layer of SDD-based systems partially overcomes the very low florescence yield typical of low-energy X-ray lines. Also as reported in, atomic-level X-ray maps using fast detectors and bright sources can now be collected under some conditions. Because EDS and EELS provide complementary information about the sample, and are both generated with the electron beam, it would be wasteful to not acquire both datasets with every sample run.

This work shows the comparison of high-resolution electron energy loss spectra (HR-EELS) in the low loss region (0−15 eV) to investigate the electronic structure from koechilinite Bi 2 MoO 6 to rusellite Bi 2 WO 6 varying the stoichiometric relation Bi 2 Mo x W 1−x O 6 . The effect of the Mo to W ratio on the bandgap energy was evaluated on individual particles. Two approximations were considered in order to determine the band gap energy value, the first one was a linear fit and the second one was a mathematical fit. Both analyses are in agreement with those ones collected and analyzed by UV–Vis characterization. Our results suggest a direct electronic transition that increases from about 2.53 eV to about 3 eV as the W content increase from 0% to 100% wt. X-ray diffraction was used to corroborate the crystal structure and crystal size; transmission electron microscopy was used to monitor the morphology evolution and UV–Vis spectroscopy in diffuse reflectance mode to determine the Eg. These techniques complement the characterization of these materials.

We investigate the coupled-system dynamics of two-level quantum dots placed on a vibrating nanomechanical resonator. The ensemble of quantum dots exhibits superradiance features which are transferred to the mechanical degrees of freedom representing fast quantum dynamics and enhanced phonon emission in a nanomechanical setup, resembling of the superradiance effect., 6 pages, 4 figures

We report the installation and performance evaluation of a probe aberration-corrected high-resolution JEOL JEM-ARM200F transmission electron microscope (TEM). We provide details on construction of the room that enables us to obtain scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) data without any evident distortions/noise from the external environment. The microscope routinely delivers expected performance. We show that the highest STEM spatial resolution and energy resolution achieved with this microscope are 0.078 nm and 0.34 eV, respectively. We report a direct comparative evaluation of the performance of this microscope with a Schottky thermal field-emission gun versus a cold field-emission gun. Cold field-emission illumination improves spatial resolution of the high current probe for analytical spectroscopy, the TEM information limit, and the electron energy resolution compared to the Schottky thermal field-emission source.

STEM spectrum-imaging with collecting EDX signal is considered in view of the extraction of maximum information from very noisy data. It is emphasized that spectrum-images with weak EDX signal often suffer from information loss in the course of PCA treatment. The loss occurs when the level of random noise exceeds a certain threshold. Weighted PCA, though potentially helpful in isolation of meaningful variations from noise, might provoke the complete loss of information in the situation of weak EDX signal. Filtering datasets prior PCA can improve the situation and recover the lost information. In particular, Gaussian kernel filters are found to be efficient. A new filter useful in the case of sparse atomic-resolution EDX spectrum-images is suggested.

Epitaxial strain, layer confinement and inversion symmetry breaking have emerged as powerful new approaches to control the electronic and atomic-scale structural properties in complex metal oxides. Nickelate heterostructures, based on RENiO$_3$, where RE is a trivalent rare-earth cation, have been shown to be relevant model systems since the orbital occupancy, degeneracy, and, consequently, the electronic/magnetic properties can be altered as a function of epitaxial strain, layer thickness and superlattice structure. One such recent example is the tri-component LaTiO$_3$-LaNiO$_3$-LaAlO$_3$ superlattice, which exhibits charge transfer and orbital polarization as the result of its interfacial dipole electric field. A crucial step towards control of these parameters for future electronic and magnetic device applications is to develop an understanding of both the magnitude and range of the octahedral network's response towards interfacial strain and electric fields. An approach that provides atomic-scale resolution and sensitivity towards the local octahedral distortions and orbital occupancy is therefore required. Here, we employ atomic-resolution imaging coupled with electron spectroscopies and first principles theory to examine the role of interfacial charge transfer and symmetry breaking in a tricomponent nickelate superlattice system. We find that nearly complete charge transfer occurs between the LaTiO$_3$ and LaNiO$_3$ layers, resulting in a Ni$^{2+}$ valence state. We further demonstrate that this charge transfer is highly localized with a range of about 1 unit cell, within the LaNiO$_3$ layers. The results presented here provide important feedback to synthesis efforts aimed at stabilizing new electronic phases that are not accessible by conventional bulk or epitaxial film approaches.

Cooperative phenomena arising due to the coupling of individual atoms via the radiation field are a cornerstone of modern quantum and optical physics. Recent experiments on x-ray quantum optics added a new twist to this line of research by exploiting superradiance in order to construct artificial quantum systems. However, so far, systematic approaches to deliberately design superradiance properties are lacking, impeding the desired implementation of more advanced quantum optical schemes. Here, we develop an analytical framework for the engineering of single-photon superradiance in extended media applicable across the entire electromagnetic spectrum, and show how it can be used to tailor the properties of an artificial quantum system. This "reverse engineering" of superradiance not only provides an avenue towards non-linear and quantum mechanical phenomena at x-ray energies, but also leads to a unified view on and a better understanding of superradiance across different physical systems.

Up to now, researchers performing analytical investigations in the transmission electron microscope typically had to choose between analytical spectroscopy techniques. They might choose energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) analysis when working with thick samples containing high-Z elements or choose electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) when studying low-Z materials in thin samples. With the advent of STEM instruments possessing both high-mechanical stability and high-brightness probes, coupled with the latest generation of fast, efficient X-ray and EELS detectors, choosing between complementary techniques is a significant restriction. The acquisition systems available up to now have forced a choice because EELS, EDS, and fast scanning have not been designed to work together, resulting in inefficient data collection.

With advancements in aberration correction, the spatial resolution of scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) has been enormously improved. In addition to the reduction of the STEM probe size, a dramatic increase in the STEM probe current has been realized, leading to the routine acquisition of high-resolution elemental and chemical maps using electron energy loss spectrometry (EELS). Using EELS combined with these advanced STEM instruments, atomic-level resolution information can be obtained from various types of materials, revealing the nature of interfaces, elemental distribution, presence of defects, and much more. In addition to simple elemental composition distributions, EELS is capable of delivering information about the chemical bonding, local atomic coordination, oxidation states, band gaps, and chemical phases of a broad range of materials at the fundamental resolution limit of the property being probed. Atomic-level EELS maps of these fundamental material properties can now be obtained with the acquisition time, to a large extent, limited only by the speed of the EELS spectrometer and not by the signal being measured. The availability of fast EELS spectrometers with large angular collection efficiencies has closed the gap between the rate of signal generation in the specimen and the speed at which this signal can be detected. This significantly increases the amount of information that can be acquired using EELS. Using the most recent generation of spectrometers, EELS data can be acquired at well over 1,000 spectra per second with a high-duty cycle. Fifth-order spectral aberration correction in this generation of spectrometers allows the use of the large collection angles needed to match the increased convergence angle that Cs-probe-corrected systems present, improving collection efficiency while maintaining energy resolution. These advances, when taken together, result in a well matched source/detector system capable of recording high-energy EELS edges at atomic resolution at a rate fast enough to limit electron beam damage to the sample.

However, so far, systematic approaches to deliberately design superradiance properties are lacking, impeding the desired implementation of more advanced quantum optical schemes. Here, we develop an analytical framework for the engineering of single-photon superradiance in extended media applicable across the entire electromagnetic spectrum, and show how it can be used to tailor the properties of an artificial quantum system. We use aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy, electron energy-loss spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, and the density functional theory to study the structural and electronic characteristics of graphene grown on the C face of SiC. We show that for high growth temperatures the graphene/SiC(000 (1) over bar) interface is dominated by a thin amorphous film which strongly suppresses the epitaxy of graphene on the SiC substrate. This film maintains an almost fixed thickness regardless of the number of the overlying graphene layers, while its chemical signature shows the presence of C, Si, and O. Structurally, the amorphous area is inhomogeneous, as its Si concentration gradually decreases while approaching the first graphene layer, which is purely sp(2) hybridized. Ab initio calculations show that the evaporation process and the creation of Si vacancies on the C face of SiC strongly enhance the surface disorder and designate defect areas as preferential sublimation sites. Based on these features, we discuss differences and similarities between the C-only buffer layer that forms on the Si face of SiC and the thicker C-Si-O amorphous film of the C face. We report on the study and characterization of nanoclusters-related recombination centers within quantum-disks-in-nanowires heterostructure by utilizing microphotoluminescence (μ-PL) and cathodoluminescence scanning transmission electron microscopy (CL-STEM). μ-PL measurement shows that the nanoclusters-related recombination center exhibits different temperature-dependent characteristics compared with the surrounding InGaN quantum-disks-related recombination center. CL-STEM measurements reveal that these recombination centers mainly arise from irregularities within the quantum disks, with a strong, spatially localized emission when measured at low temperature. The spectra obtained from both CL-STEM and μ-PL correlate well with each other. Our work sheds light on the optical and structural properties of simultaneously coexisting recombination centers within nanowires heterostructures.
