We report here the preparation and characterization of two families of RP 2D perovskites including linear monoammonium cations, namely (CnH2n+1NH3)2PbBr4 and (CnH2n+1NH3)2PbI4 with n = 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14 and 16.

In the last twenty years, the number of publications presenting generalized pH-sensitive devices proposed for food freshness monitoring has been steadily growing, but to date, none of them have succeeded in exiting the laboratory and reaching the supermarket shelf. To reach this scope, we developed a large-scale applicable pH-sensitive sensor array to monitor perishable foods’ degradation. We ensured freshness monitoring in domestic conditions, using sales packages and during chilled storage, by simple naked-eye readout and multivariate imaging analysis, and we fully corroborated the device by (i) projection of unknown independent samples in the PCA model, (ii) TVB-N quantification and (iii) microbiological assay. The choice of commercial and cheap dye and polymeric support already employed in food packaging ensures the low-cost and scalability of the device and the promising results obtained make this device an eligible candidate for large-scale implementation.

We report here the preparation and characterization of two families of RP 2D perovskites including linear monoammonium cations, namely (CnH2n+1NH3)2PbBr4 and (CnH2n+1NH3)2PbI4 with n=4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14 and 16. Structural and optical properties shows some similarities between the two series of samples with, however, distinct features related to the presence of phase transitions occurring when different ligands are present. Optical properties confirm a general blue-shift for the (CnH2n+1NH3)2PbBr4 system with respect to the (CnH2n+1NH3)2PbI4 family with the PL data showing two distinct variation paths for their excitonic emission behavior, one directly related to the chain length and another one depending on the ammonium coordination to the halogen atoms. Water stability of (CnH2n+1NH3)2PbBr4 and (CnH2n+1NH3)2PbI4 has been assessed and the results show an improved hydrophobicity by increasing the number of carbon atoms of the alkyl chain as well as by moving from iodide to bromide perovskites.

g-C3N4/metal halide perovskite composites were prepared and used for the first time as photocatalysts for in situ1O2 generation to perform hetero Diels–Alder, ene and oxidation reactions with suitable dienes and alkenes. The standardized methodology was made applicable to a variety of olefinic substrates. The scope of the method is finely illustrated and the reactions afforded desymmetrized hydroxy-ketone derivatives, unsaturated ketones and epoxides. Some limitations were also observed, especially in the case of the alkene oxidations, and poor chemoselectivity was somewhere observed in this work which is the first application of MHP-based composites for in situ1O2 generation. The experimental protocol can be used as a platform to further expand the knowledge and applicability of MHPs to organic reactions, since perovskites offer a rich variety of tuning strategies which may be explored to improve reaction yields and selectivities.

Cyclopenta[d]isoxazoline aminols were used for the synthesis of β-turn mimics. The peptide chain choice ascertained the influence of their structural features on the applicability/reliability/robustness of these scaffolds as β-turn inducers and their limitations. The amino acid selection as well as steric demands can favor or disfavor the structure folding and the correct design of the peptide chains deeply influences the potential use of these nitrosocarbonyl-based compounds as turn-inducers.

Abstract Oximes are one of the most important and prolific functional groups in organic chemistry; among them, 9-anthraldehyde oxime represents a valuable example both from the preparative side and the synthetic applications. There are many strategies to prepare 9-anthraldehyde oxime from different functional groups that were summarized in the present review, focusing on the most recent and innovative. This work presents a colorimetric dye-based array for naked-eye detection of chicken meat spoilage. The array is obtained by fixing five acid-base indicators, m-cresol purple (1), o-cresol red (2), bromothymol blue (3), thymol blue (4), and chlorophenol red (5), and a sensing molecule specific for thiols, 5,5'-dithiobis(2-nitrodibenzoic acid), called Ellman's reagent (6), on a cellulose-based support. The dyes, being permanently charged, are fixed on the support via ion-exchange. The entire degradation process of beast poultry meat, at ambient temperature and in a domestic fridge, is followed by the change of the color of the array, placed in the headspace over the meat samples. The device is set after selection of the most suitable starting form, which could be the acidic or the basic color of indicators, being the proper dye concentration and the dimension of the spots already established. Basing on sensors colors, we identified three levels of the degradation process of chicken meat, named SAFE, WARNING, and HAZARD. By instrumental analysis, we demonstrated that sensors response was correlated to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) composition in the headspace and, thus, to meat spoilage progress. We demonstrated that biogenic amines (BAs), commonly considered a critical spoilage marker, are indeed produced into the samples but never present in the headspace, even in traces, during the investigated time-lapse. The VOC evolution nevertheless allows one to assign the sample as WARNING and further HAZARD. Some indicators turned out to be more informative than others, and the best candidates for a future industrial application resulted in a bromothymol blue (3)-, chlorophenol red (5)-, and Ellman's reagent (6)-based array.

The generation and trapping of two new nitrosocarbonyl intermediates bearing carbohydrate-based chiral substituents is achieved by the mild oxidation of the corresponding nitrile oxides with tertiary amine N-oxides. Their capture with suitable dienes and alkenes afforded the corresponding hetero Diels–Alder cycloadducts and ene adducts from fair to excellent yields. The entire methodology looks highly promising by the easy conversion of aldoximes into hydroxymoyl halides, widening the access to nitrosocarbonyls, versatile tools in organic synthesis.

Anthracenenitrile oxide undergoes 1,3‐dipolar cycloaddition reaction with propargyl bromide affording the expected isoxazole as single regioisomer, suitably synthetically elaborated and functionalized with a protected triple bond. The introduction of a bromine atom at the position C10 of the anthracene moiety allows for inserting a variety of aromatic and heterocyclic substituents through Suzuki coupling. A two‐way synthetic route can lead to simple isoxazole derivatives or, after N−O bond reductive cleavage and BF3 complexation, enamino ketone boron complexes. The photophysical properties of both the substituted isoxazoles and the corresponding boron complexes were investigated to show the potentialities for the employment as fluorescent tags in imaging techniques. The quite good quantum yield values confirm the suitability of these compounds in the cellular environment. Scope and limitations of the methodology are discussed.

In order to overcome the toxicity of lead halide perovskites, in recent years the research has focused on replacing lead with more environmentally friendly metals like tin, germanium, bismuth or antimony. However, lead-free perovskites still present instability issues and low performances that do not make them competitive when compared to their lead-based counterparts. Here we report the synthesis of lead-free Cs2SnX6 (X = Br, I) nanostructures of different shapes by using various surface ligands. These compounds are a promising alternative to lead halide perovskites in which the replacement of divalent lead (Pb(II)) with tetravalent tin (Sn(IV)) causes a modification of the standard perovskite structure. We investigate the effects of different amines on the morphology and size of Cs2SnX6 (X = Br, I) nanocrystals, presenting a facile hot-infection method to directly synthesize three-dimensional (3D) nanoparticles as well as two-dimensional (2D) nanoplatelets. The amines not only modify the shape of the crystals, but also affect their optical properties: increasing the length of the amine carbon chain we observe a widening in the bandgap of the compounds and a blue-shift of their emission peak. Alongside the tuning of the chemical composition and the reduction of the crystal size, our study offers a new insight in controlling the physical properties of perovskite nanocrystals by means of the capping ligands, paving the way for future research on lead-free materials.

Carboxymethyl cellulose, the most promising cellulose-derivatives, pulls together low cost, abundancy, biocompatibility, unique properties and, unlike the precursor, chemical reactivity. This latter aspect arouses the curiosity of chemists around the possibility of chemical modification and the production of interesting functional materials. Here, a two-step reaction is proposed for the covalent anchoring of a wide variety of molecules containing sulfonic groups to CMC. The strength points of the proposed pathway have to be found in the quick and easy reactions and workup that allow to obtain ready-to-use functional materials with very high yields. Having in this case exploited a pH-sensitive dye as a sulfonated molecule, the functional material is an interesting candidate for the development of colorimetric miniaturized sensors via the following drop-casting deposition: once optimized sensors preparation by design of experiments, an example of application on real samples is reported.

Herein we examine the determinants of the allosteric inhibition of the mitochondrial chaperone TRAP1 by a small molecule ligand. The knowledge generated is harnessed into the design of novel derivatives with interesting biological properties. TRAP1 is a member of the Hsp90 family of proteins, which work through sequential steps of ATP processing coupled to client-protein remodeling. Isoform selective inhibition of TRAP1 can provide novel information on the biomolecular mechanisms of molecular chaperones, as well as new insights into the development of small molecules with therapeutic potential. Our analysis of the interactions between an active first-generation allosteric ligand and TRAP1 shows how the small molecule induces long-range perturbations that influence the attainment of reactive poses in the active site. At the same time, the dynamic adaptation of the allosteric binding pocket to the presence of the first-generation compound sets the stage for the design of a set of second-generation ligands: the characterization of the formation/disappearance of pockets around the allosteric site that is used to guide optimize the ligands' fit for the allosteric site and improve inhibitory activities. The effects of the newly designed molecules are validated experimentally in vitro and in vivo. We discuss the implications of our approach as a promising strategy towards understanding the molecular determinants of allosteric regulation in chemical and molecular biology, and towards speeding up the design of allosteric small molecule modulators.

The elucidation of the structure–property correlation in 2D metal halide perovskite is a key issue to understand the dependence of optical properties on structural distortions and to design novel tailored materials. To extend the actual knowledge on this kind of correlation for lead-free materials, here we report four novel 2D germanium bromide perovskites, namely A2GeBr4with A = phenylethylammonium, PEA, Br-phenylethylammonium, BrPEA, F-phenylethylammonium, FPEA, and benzylammonium BZA. A dependence of the band gap value and emission characteristics in terms of Stokes shift and peak width has been highlighted and correlated with the octahedral distortion parameters. In addition, by comparing the actual results with previous data on analogous Sn- and Pb-based materials, we observed an intrinsic increased distortion induced by germanium, particularly on the octahedral bond elongation and bond angle variance, and less on the Ge–Br–Ge bond angle. The structural and optical investigation, together with density functional theory simulations, clarified the role of different structural distortion parameters on the optical properties for a series of 2D Ge-containing perovskites, thus providing novel clues for the future design of layered lead-free materials.
