One key challenge in Artificial Life is designing systems that display an emergence of complex behaviors. Many such systems depend on a high-dimensional parameter space, only a small subset of which displays interesting dynamics. Focusing on the case of continuous systems, we introduce the 'Phase Transition Finder'(PTF) algorithm, which can be used to efficiently generate parameters lying at the border between two phases. We argue that such points are more likely to display complex behaviors, and confirm this by applying PTF to Lenia showing it can increase the frequency of interesting behaviors more than two-fold, while remaining efficient enough for large-scale searches., Comment: 5 pages

We study the probabilistic modeling performed by Autoregressive Large Language Models (LLMs) through the angle of time directionality, addressing a question first raised in (Shannon, 1951). For large enough models, we empirically find a time asymmetry in their ability to learn natural language: a difference in the average log-perplexity when trying to predict the next token versus when trying to predict the previous one. This difference is at the same time subtle and very consistent across various modalities (language, model size, training time, ...). Theoretically, this is surprising: from an information-theoretic point of view, there should be no such difference. We provide a theoretical framework to explain how such an asymmetry can appear from sparsity and computational complexity considerations, and outline a number of perspectives opened by our results., Comment: Corrected typos in Table 2. In this thesis, I study Interface Conformal Field Theories (ICFT) and their holographic dual, which is composed of two asymptotically Anti-de-Sitter (AdS) spaces glued through a thin gravitating membrane. I restrict the study to simple minimal models, which allow for analytic control while providing universally applicable results. The analysis is set in 2D ICFT/3D gravity, but I expect much of the results to be generalizable to higher dimensions. I first consider this system at equilibrium and at finite temperature. By solving the equations of motion in the bulk, I find the allowable solution landscape. Classifying the rich set of solutions among 3 thermodynamical phases, I draw the phase diagram outlining the nature of the various phase transitions. I then examine a simple out-of-equilibrium situation arising from connecting at an interface two spatially infinite CFTs at different temperatures. Then a "Non-Equilibrium Steady State" (NESS) describes the growing region where the interaction has settled into a stationary phase. I determine the holographic dual of this region, composed of two spinning planar black holes glued at the membrane. I find an expression for the deformed out-of-equilibrium event horizon. This geometry suggests that the field theory interface acts as a perfect scrambler, a property that until now seemed unique to black hole horizons. Finally, I study the entanglement structure of the aforementioned geometries by means of the Ryu-Takayanagi prescription. After reviewing a construction in the vacuum state, I present partial results for more general geometries at finite temperature. For this purpose, I need to introduce numerical methods. I outline the main difficulties in their application and conclude by mentioning the Quantum Null Energy Condition (QNEC), an inequality linking entanglement entropy and energy, that can be used to test the consistency of the models., Comment: 159 pages, 65 figures

We find stationary thin-brane geometries that are dual to far-from-equilibrium steady states of two-dimensional holographic interfaces. The flow of heat at the boundary agrees with the result of CFT and the known energy-transport coefficients of the thin-brane model. We argue that by entangling outgoing excitations the interface produces coarse-grained entropy at a maximal rate, and point out similarities and differences with double-sided black funnels. The non-compact, non-Killing and far from-equilibrium event horizon of our solutions coincides with the local (apparent) horizon on the colder side, but lies behind it on the hotter side of the interface. We compute the phase diagram of the simplest holographic bottom-up model of conformal interfaces. The model consists of a thin domain wall between three-dimensional Anti-de Sitter (AdS) vacua, anchored on a boundary circle. We distinguish five phases depending on the existence of a black hole, the intersection of its horizon with the wall, and the fate of inertial observers. We show that, like the Hawking-Page phase transition, the capture of the wall by the horizon is also a first order transition and comment on its field-theory interpretation. The static solutions of the domain-wall equations include gravitational avatars of the Faraday cage, black holes with negative specific heat, and an intriguing phenomenon of suspended vacuum bubbles corresponding to an exotic interface/anti-interface fusion. Motivated by the GW170817/GRB170817A constraint on the deviation of the speed of gravitational waves from that of photons, we study disformal transformations of the metric in the context of the generalized Proca theory. The constraint restricts the form of the gravity Lagrangian, the way the electromagnetism couples to the gravity sector on cosmological backgrounds, or in general a combination of both. Since different ways of coupling matter to gravity are typically related to each other by disformal transformations, it is important to understand how the structure of the generalized Proca Lagrangian changes under disformal transformations. For disformal transformations with constant coefficients we provide the complete transformation rule of the Lagrangian. We find that additional terms, which were considered as beyond generalized Proca in the literature, are generated by the transformations. Once these additional terms are included, on the other hand, the structure of the gravity Lagrangian is preserved under the transformations. We then derive the transformation rules for the sound speeds of the scalar, vector and tensor perturbations on a homogeneous and isotropic background. We explicitly show that they transform following the natural expectation of metric transformations, that is, according to the transformation of the background lightcone structure. We end by arguing that inhomogeneities due to structures in the universe, e.g. dark matter halos, generically changes the speed of gravitational waves from its cosmological value. We give a rough estimate of the effect of inhomogeneities and find that the fine-tuning should not depend on the background or that the fine-tuned theory has to be further fine-tuned to pass the tight constraint.

We study disformal transformations of cosmological perturbations by vector fields in theories invariant under U(1) gauge transformations. Three types of vector disformal transformations are considered: (i) disformal transformations by a single timelike vector; (ii) disformal transformations by a single spacelike vector; and (iii) disformal transformations by three spacelike vectors. We show that transformations of type (i) do not change either curvature perturbation or gravitational waves; that those of type (ii) do not change curvature perturbation but change gravitational waves; and that those of type (iii) change both curvature perturbation and gravitational waves. Therefore, coupling matter fields to the metric after disformal transformations of type (ii) or (iii) in principle have observable consequences. While the recent multi-messenger observation of binary neutron stars has singled out a proper disformal frame at the present epoch with a high precision, the result of the present paper may thus help distinguishing disformal frames in the early universe., Comment: 16 pages
