In the pursuit of sustainable sources for food, energy, and health products, microalgae have gained attention. In the present study, the lagoonal system of the Nestos River delta was selected as a sampling point in order to search for opportunistic and robust species. Two new strains of Tetraselmis are described with regards to their taxonomic features (as observed using light and transmission electron microscopy and molecular phylogenetics) and their biochemical properties (total lipid, total protein, and total carbohydrate content, photosynthetic pigments, and antioxidant capacity). The studied strains were identified as representatives of Tetraselmis verrucosa f. rubens. Furthermore, both strains exhibited an interesting biochemical profile coupled with high growth rates and promising antioxidant activity, without the use of enhancement and induction culture methods, warranting further investigation and showing potential for biotechnological use. © 2023 by the authors.

Background: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) had a major impact on healthcare systems worldwide. During the early phase of the pandemic many elective procedures were postponed. At the same time, the safe and effective management of medical emergencies such as ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) has been a challenge. Methods: A systematic literature search was conducted aiming to identify published guidance reports by national or international societies regarding the management of patients suffering STEMI in the era of COVID-19. Results: Among 1681 articles initially retrieved, six fulfilled the inclusion criteria and were included in the systematic review. Two reports were international consensus documents, while four reports were national guidance statements from Asian countries (Taiwan, India, Iran, and China). Most documents were drafted during the early phase of the pandemic. According to the international consensus documents, percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) should be regarded as the reperfusion method of choice. On the other hand, in three out of four national consensus statements (Taiwan, Iran and China) fibrinolysis was considered as the reperfusion method of choice for STEMI in suspected/confirmed patients with COVID-19, unless contraindicated or in the presence of high cardiovascular risk clinical features. Authors of all documents underlined the need for early COVID-19 testing in patients with STEMI to better determine the next therapeutical steps. Conclusions: National and international consensus statements for STEMI management in the era of COVID-19 have been published mainly during the early peak phase of the pandemic. Authors recognise that these recommendations are mainly based on expert opinions and observational data. In addition to food supply, there is a growing recognition of the wider ecosystem benefits of Integrated Multitrophic Aquaculture (IMTA) systems in coastal waters, including regulating services such as carbon sequestration and nutrient remediation. The water trophic status and the co-cultured species combinations affect IMTA productivity. In this study, we examined the ability of different combinations of IMTA organisms to remediate nutrients and the economic/environmental gain for reducing the environmental footprint in potential IMTA systems of the eastern Mediterranean. The results showed that the co-cultivation of organisms can reduce the negative effects on the marine environment of a fish farm both on the water column and the sediment. Meso- and eutrophic water states do not show a high variation in terms of foot print mitigation, with all three of the co-cultivated organisms to perform well. In oligotrophic waters, the obligatory absence of mussels reduces the effectiveness of the IMTA system. As expected, larger-sized IMTA systems have higher production rates and as a result higher percentage of nutrient removal. Finally, bivalve harvesting helps to remove the carbon that is trapped in their shells, contributing to the mitigation of processes related to climate change, such as the acidification of the oceans. As atherosclerosis remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide despite the advances in its medical and interventional management, the identification of markers associated with its incidence and prognosis constitutes an appealing prospect. In this regard, asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA), a well-studied endogenous endothelial nitric oxide synthase inhibitor, represents a core mediator of endothelial dysfunction in atherosclerotic diseases. Given the pathophysiologic background of this molecule, its importance in the most frequent atherosclerotic manifestation, coronary artery disease (CAD), has been extensively studied in the past decades. The available evidence suggests elevation of ADMA in the presence of common cardiovascular risk factors, namely diabetes mellitus, arterial hypertension, and hypertriglyceridemia, being related to endothelial dysfunction and incident major adverse cardiovascular events in these groups of patients. More-over, ADMA is associated with CAD occurrence and severity, as well as its prognosis, especially in populations with renal impairment. Interestingly, even in the absence of obstructive CAD, increased ADMA may indicate coronary endothelial dysfunction and epicardial vasomotor dysfunction, which are prognostication markers for incident cardiovascular events. In the case of acute coronary syndromes, high ADMA levels signify an augmented risk of incomplete ST-segment elevation resolution and poorer prognosis. Abnormal ADMA elevations may indicate adverse outcomes following percutaneous or surgical coronary revascularization, such as instent restenosis, graft patency, and hard cardiovascular endpoints. Finally, since its association with inflammation is significant, chronic inflammatory conditions may present with coronary endothelial dysfunction and subclinical coronary atherosclerosis by means of increased coronary artery calcium, with augmented ADMA acting as a biomarker. © 2023 Bentham Science Publishers.

To record and compare the quality of life and attachment style of dementia and cancer caregivers. This is a comparative prospective cross sectional study. Participants were 45 caregivers of patients with cancer and 45 caregivers of patients with dementia. The study was conducted at a University Hospital and from a Day Centre of Alzheimer Disease and related disorders Association in Athens. Quality of caregivers’ life was measured by the Short Form 36 Health Survey Questionnaire (SF-36) and caregivers’ attachment was evaluated by the Experience in Close Relationships—Short Form (ECR). Caregivers’ age (cancer caregivers’ age Mean = 52.4 and SD ± 12.21, dementia caregivers’ age Mean = 58.4 and SD ± 12.8) differed significantly across diagnostic groups (p < 0.005). Dementia patients were older than cancer patients (dementia patients’ age Mean = 76.8, cancer patients’ age Mean = 65, p < 0.001). Statistically significant difference was found between two groups regarding the duration of the disease. The duration of disease in dementia patients (Mean = 3.14 years) was significantly longer (p = 0.014) than in cancer patients (Mean = 1.23 years). Subscale scores in both instruments (SF-36 and ECR), showed no statistically significant differentiation. Our data showed no statistically significant differentiation in any subscale between cancer and dementia caregivers.
